No problem on the timing. This is one of the best events all year simply because of the cause. KC metro area can support two events the same day/weekend and especially events like this.
I just checked in w/ my partner and looking forward to this event again.

If my brother wasn't getting married that day, I would be there for sure!  This is a great event for a great cause. If you've never played, I night suggest you check it out.

Tank I thought your event was the following weekend? The 19-20th?

I have no idea where the Smithville event popped up? It wasn't on the list the board
was circulating.

Eric- I'm mot sure I agree the KC can support two events on the same day?

We go on though, May 12 this even will be more fun than ever!

The Smithville event is news to me.  No one from Smithville gave me any dates that they had planned to run an event.  However, since the course isn't under the umbrella of the KCFDC, they don't have to ask for approval for their dates or see if they conflict with ours.

Post by: jack on February 15, 2012, 09:35:30 AM
Since they are about an hour and 20 minutes apart from each other, I hope that we could support the 2 events as a disc golf community.  ONe will be for a solid cause, great benefit, and a historically good time..... the other I don't think any of us know about...... so its speculation at this point, but hopefully they wouldn't go over the same date, possibly move it to the 13th instead out there....

That'd be the "Call to the Bell's" Mini event at my place...only Bells products will be allowed for the event, unless you have a note from the owner of the brewery that you choose to bring, so in other words, you can bring your own Brew....or have a good note to talk about, which is ok with fine crafted beer as well....

Sean is right though this is a great cause, I never seem to be able to make it out to it though, the May month is tough for me to get to places for some reason.....

I have a number of updates to share this week and I hate to spend so much of this update on my cancer battle but I just want to make sure it’s clear what could prevent me from spending much time at the event on the 12th.  Yes, the event will go on as always, it’s just that my participation might be a bit limited.

First I spent four days in the hospital last week with severe kidney issues. The cancer has spread and was preventing my kidneys from properly draining. I ended up having a procedure that by passes my bladder and drains all urine into temporary collection bags. These will be replaced by semi-permanent internal tubes tomorrow. The procedure is out-patient and I will be home by tomorrow afternoon.  Next week I return to the Oncologist and we will decide on the next steps and/or procedures to specifically address the prostate cancer itself.  Yes, it all really kind of sucks but after seven years of this fight, I just keep on keepin’ on.

OK, enough of that, now you know.

Registration is moving along as it usually does, details are below. If you are playing and haven’t paid or have yet to tell me please let me know as soon as you can, please.

We have a number of good sponsors but could always use more if you know of businesses etc that might want to donate items for team prizes or ring-of-fire etc.

I spent a few minutes and cleaned up the list and here is where we stand:
25 teams are paid and registered:

Prostate Cancer will strike 1 in 6 men but if caught early well over 95% of men are treated and live long, healthy lives. I hope to see you there on the 12th not only supporting the cause but also enjoying this wonderful sport on a fantastic disc golf course!

[next update will include sponsors, prizes and details on discs and players packs]

Hey James, I'll be your partner for this, if you'd like.  Otherwise, I may go to Topeka.

Not to speak for James but he got partnered with John Theiss today.

FYI, we currently have one single and two teams on the wait list.

Question: Is Thornfield going to be open anytime prior to the tourney?  I have never played Thornfield before and would like a lay of the land.  Does anyone have a map of the course?

I have asked before but because they are usually prepping the course on Friday they have said no.
I was going to ask again but don't count on it.

I had a map on Google Maps but can't seem to find it. I'll post a link if I can find it tomorrow.

I was just joking.

Thornfield is ....ummmm...... technical.  And pretty long from the back tees.

Ha cruel jokes!! Let's just say be prepared to throw 30 feet straight, then a 90 degree turn and then another 350 foot tunnel shot. Good luck!

Here is the map. It's not the greatest but it is the best I have for now,:

https://docs.google.com/present/view?id=dctsrvjd_88cfmgkwgm (https://docs.google.com/present/view?id=dctsrvjd_88cfmgkwgm)

#9 is shorter
#10 now has a dogleg
#14 we play short
#18 is longer

That's the most frustrating part of Thornfield... I LOVE the fact that we are raising money for a very worthy cause, but that is the only time we get to play/see the course. Seems like Disc golfers monetary contribution is all that's wanted!

Very correct, and that has never been a secret.  His idea was that ball golf courses charge too much for charities to make a good return, so this was his answer.  His goal was never to have it as a regular playing disc golf course, at least that is what I got when we discussed using it for Worlds in 2008.  This was part of the reason that he didn't want concrete pads out there as well.......

Enjoy it when you can, and be thankful he is supporting a few events a year, it helps maintain the need to not worry about public issues on a private course.....it is after all a private course, and its HIS private course in his backyard....would you like the looks of Tank or myself in your backyard everyday for 5-6 hours? :P

Tank, this comes up ever year. I'm not sure the right solution but I will see Bill Stueck at an event tonight and would be glad to make an argument for more access. My position will be however that anyone playing our tournament could come play Friday betwen say noon and 6. If you are not playing in the tourney, pay a nominal fee, say $5 to play between noon and 6.  (The hours would have to be limited becasue he likely will want someone form the charity there the entire time and I only have limited time on Friday.

This is just a thought off the top of my head and responses are encouraged - tell me I'm nuts if you think so.

Man... Wouldn't it be nice if we had like 20+ courses in a 25 miles radius of KC. Then we wouldn't be so concerned about a 100% for Charity DG Course. Oh wait...

I can tell you from personal experience talking with Bill that he really doesn't have a desire to allow DGers access to the course outside of his events. Not to even practice. I would just let it be personally. I tried once to get a monthly league going, where half the money paid in goes to whatever charity he had chosen. He thought about it for all of 2 mins. before saying "You know what would be a good idea... Get some of your friends to come play in the (charity tournament name here) in 2 weeks."

Hey guys, me and my husband Elza Gott were out at the tourney yesterday and I left my favorite Destroyer on hole 10, just down in the open near the basket. It is bright yellow with the word "HOMIE" in silver on the top. There was no name on it, but it's my favorite driver. If anyone finds it today while picking up course, please let Elza know. You can send a message on here or call 816-835-7425. Thank you!!

Elza spoke to Gary this morning about a disc I lost and he said your brother has it. It's the "Homie" disc. Elza will be glad to meet him or you anywhere to pick that up for me. I really appreciate it!! That's my baby:) Just e-mail or call Elza back. Thanks again for an awesome day!! Jennifer & Elza

She needs this disc. I don't recall how many holes she out drove all of us guys on with that disc but it was more than one...

While were talking about lost discs, I have an old tie-dyed Cheetah hit and roll over the edge on #5. Someone said they saw it but couldn't get to it. If it ends up being retrieved I'd love to have it back.

Great event for a great cause. I had a blast and am looking forward to being there again next year.
