This is a PDGA B' Tier Event.

Oh, look....another tourney on the same courses that always get used....blah

When was the last time that you played both of those courses on the same day?

Actually the kcwo intermediates and recs play that same set up as their only two courses. So if they play both tourneys that would be a bit repetitive.

I run a few events in various parts of the city but I also like to keep things centrally located and it makes it easier since those courses are closer.  I am not against a spring Olathe event, I just have not been given any indication of interest outside of the Old Settlers Event.  I would like to come up with something at Blue Springs one of these days.

A blue springs/ pleasant hill tourny would be a good time.

I would be happy to coordinate something in other areas if someone from those areas wants to talk to me about it and help me from a TD perspective.

Scott, thanks for continuing to provide fun, competitive tournaments in the area.  They're always a blast and judging by attendance, many others feel the same way.

Kudos to you and DD for making these happen.

I, for one, don't mind playing the same courses over and over.

I'd be happiest if there was a tournament every other weekend at one of our 5 most popular courses; I'd never get bored.

(I guess that's what leagues are for)

*like*

This is one of the best reasons to support DD, IMO. They (Scott and co. in this instance) run great events and keep our area saturated with competitive play.

This year alone there have been courses at: SMP, Wyco, Rosedale, Blackthorn, Woodhenge and one rounders at Swope, WW, I think Blue Springs, and I'm sure a few others. If you look back to last year you get to toss in Kearney, PC, and Blue Valley.

It is great to have an area store that runs such fun and high-quality events and such a number of them. Keep it up!

And for everybody that hasn't tried one, throw a Suspect. Those things are awesome.

Post by: robm on June 05, 2013, 10:18:18 PM
Same day has nothing to do with it jack...very poor argument.

When is the last time PC, Lakeside or Wyco was used in a tourney?  March
When is the next time those will be used?  Sept....?
How many times will WW, Rosey and Swope be used in that gap?  Too Many

I guess if those courses had more tourneys though then I would be playing on a dirt field instead of nice grass.  So I guess you can keep your same old crap.

Feel free to throw in Blue Springs and Lee Summit as well do you don't try to use the KS bias card.

It's amazing when someone feels the need to judge a person’s opinion....I had the same thing happen with Rob on the cost of worlds.    Rob, condescending and disrespectful remarks are probably more of a hindrance than an opinion.

*clearing throat* Ahem

Stop hindering sir

Scott I will do whatever I can to help as always....

Also...I feel like my posting may have went better under the Wide Open topic....nothing against your tourneys.

Why would it go under the Wide Open topic and whose tourneys are you complaining about.  The only tourney the KCFDC runs is the Wide Open.  Every other event this year has been run by an outside entity so you are only slamming DD and other promoters tourneys.

The highest form of ignorance is when you reject something you don't know anything about.

Ahem-- If I may,

Andy was saying his posting would have gone better under the KCWO topic because, year in and year out, the same 'core' courses get used for that event. I don't think anyone could disagree with that point.

Seems like a lot of people get easily offended on here but that isn't really the point. This thread has been hijacked from its original purpose, which is announcing and promoting the MACs. I respectively suggest any other umbrage be taken elsewhere.

Scott, thanks for running such fun and high quality events. I don't think I'll still be in the area, but if by some happenstance I am, count me in as a volunteer.

Can I Pen you in as the Title sponsor?

As a guy coming from outside the K C area, I think this event is awesome. It gives folks a chance to come to KC and play some of the most awesome courses on the planet. With that said, an Open tourney would be most awesome as well. It's kinda weird coming from the outsiide now, but, looking from the outside now, it just seems that there are some overly critical comments on how things are done. With that said, it's not a bad thing to keep expressing your views as to what is happening in the community. I can only hope that people keep giving their feedbackk to what they think is towards the betterment of the disc golf community here in Kansas Citty.

Much love,
Tallguy

actions and support go way farther than words in a forum in my mind. 8)  Blather all they want, and they know who they are, ultimately it takes time away from the keyboard to impress me.

This forum represents one of the most important feedback devices offered to club members since it allows for simple communication and the democratization of the club. The most important part of any democracy is an informed electorate and one of the best ways to do that is through introducing challenging thoughts and new ideas.

But, lest this thread drift further I would like to propose/encourage my fellow competitors who aren't eligible for this to help out in any way. Whether spotting, helping set up, marshaling, filling water jugs, etc... I wish I were going to still be in the area to see this thing get off the ground but alas, I'll be moved by then.

Even if only for one round, or to help prep these are crucial to any good event.  A lot of work gets done prior to the event.  The event happens and the event continues for those running it after the scoring is done.  Spot on with this need for certain in any event, non-sanctioned, C=Tier, B-Tier, A-Tier, NT, it takes everyone to help make an event excel!

I know there are reasons for it but this is one reason I wish there were Am and Pro weekends for the KCWO. I would love to help out more at the event but I'm not going to sacrifice trying to be as prepared as I can be to do so. I think that there would be many more people available in this format.

I think we should all just lay out a list of the things we've "done" so there can be an evaluation of each of our statements used on these threads. Thus avoiding the ridiculous and silly, "and you know who you are..." comments, which, ironically, do nothing to help the issue or the conversation. You just list your charitable and selfless efforts and the names with nothing to share will be excluded from the catty commentary.

And... Go!

So far the players package is looking like this so far.  At least this is what we are striving for.  An awesome value for a low entry B Tier Event.

1-2 Discs
Stool
Dri Fit Shirt (Bonus for those registered by July 18th)
Re-usable Score Card with mechanical golf pencil
Box
Patch
Other odds and ends

Please pre-register so we can get an accurate count of what to order so we can give the players the best value.

2 great courses it is only a matter of time, that was the second time in the event's history that the change needed to happen.

And thanks Scott to being flexible enough to make it happen for everyone to enjoy the golf in KC.  We are blessed to have a wide assortment of individuals that all want to see our sport played and grow!

I wont know that until the week of the event.  I will look at it more next week and try to give a guesstimate. I will also have the pins set by Monday and post those locations.

Everybody who isn't eligible to play is going to volunteer, right? At a quick glance it doesn't look like there is anything too close that is competing. (Unless you're going to the "World Championships" or something).

Even if you don't have a whole day, do a round of spotting. I'm sure Scott would love to have some extra eyes out there to keep the flow going.

Registration is currently at 110.  You must be registered by today in order to get the dri fit part of the players package as I am ordering them tomorrow and ordering pretty much only the sizes I need.  110 with two weeks to go ... WOW ... this is going to be awesome.  The course should be set today and I will post the official placements tomorrow.

At the Monkey Island Open in Emporia they change holes 5-7 by skipping 5 and adding a temp hole that shoots across 7 to the ampitheater.  At first I thought it was kind of crazy to have two fairways that shot perpendicular to each other, but it worked out just fine and was actually pretty fun.

If people are aware of the play on both 12 and 18, it could be really fun.

I wish we had a betting line on this weekend's tourney, looks to be a great field of competitors. Anyone have any predictions?

As much as I would like to see an American or east sider win this, I am expecting the redcoat, Slamming Sammy Webber, to edge out Matt Prodigy Perry, Jordan, and Walker for the victory. My Dark horse to make it in the top 5 is unrated Brandon Elkins.

In intermediate, Jordan's bigger brother will hold off the White Tornado and Skinny Brian Palmer for the win.

For those that want live scoring, I will be tweeting live scoring on the intermediate women's top card @ComoVince.  8)

I don't think he should be playing advanced in a B tier event. In fact, I highly doubt you've ever even played with him. So are you basing this on his rating? And lets be sportsmanlike shall we? Test his mental game - what kind of bush league crap is this anyway?

Wouldn't it be better if you just went out and tried to beat the course instead of worrying about other people's ratings?

Haters gonna hate, he throws too far, his rating is too high, etc; in my eyes, that means you already think you're going to lose to him.  And you're the one talking about testing someone's mental game?

I believe we played one in emporia?  Maybe the monkey island?  Chill pill dude. I thought the game was 90% mental.  And yeah, I think anything over 900 is advanced

Very well said.
i guess some people like to stroke there ego and play down "just to get that win"

I have never played advanced or won an intermediate tournament... don't understand why it's such a big deal.

Funny also how the instigator of this discussion has won an intermediate tournament this year.  And YET, is still playing intermediate.  Talk about a general rule of thumb.  In Tank's words " MOVE UP "

I can't wait to see all you at the tourney.  Hopefully Tank will be there to tell me what to do.  Anyone who knows me, knows I don't get in anyone's head.  But since the sh$t talk is so good, maybe we could make a little wager?

Look man, I was just defending my brother on a comment that made no sense.  I should've just let it go, but until he wins an intermediate tournament, I don't see any reason why he needs to move up if he doesn't feel comfortable doing so - just my opinion.  The PDGA doens't even recommend that a player move to advanced until 935.  J has stayed out of the discussion, so I commend him for that.  He made his defense and left it at that.  I'm just pointing out the facts; but evidently I get a little too defensive at times on this forum.

I'm not sure who you're pointing the wager at, but feel free to throw it my way if you'd like.

Since this is a sanctioned tournament Kevin, your 945 rating disqualifies you from anything but Adv, sorry.  :P

His original comment was uncalled for if he didn't want a reaction.  And I'm thinking he did.

Again, if your rating allows it, who cares that division he plays in?  I look forward to competing against Jacob and I hope we have a card together; it'll be fun!

Seriously, all the bagger talk is funny when we're just giving each other a hard time, but there are some players (I don't know if Jeff is included) who really take it seriously.  But remember, Jacob's rating (and the PDGA's guidelines for that matter) doesn't support your opinions Jeff.

Players packs can be picked up from DDKC from 10-8 on Friday or anytime on Saturday.  Whether you get it Friday or Saturday, the players packs will be located at DDKC.

I will have what needs to be painted done on Thursday.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for helping make the Midwest Amater Championship a success.  This was a tournament thought about since the beginning of DDKC and I am proud to see everyone enjoying the end result.  I can't thank you enough for the kind words, it's those comments that motivate me even more to run great events.

I am already in the works for 2014 to make it bigger and better.  I need your help in doing so.  I would really like your feedback on the good and bad and any suggestions you have on improvements.  You can pm me, email me at scott@dynamicdiscs.com, call me at 920-379-0056 or post here.

Please thank anyone listed on the sponsor sheet for their contribution and support and any of the volunteers for their time and service to making this event run smooth.

Lets get 270 players next year!!!

Thanks again to everyone :)

Completely agree. I know there are plenty of things to do over a weekend and to show up and volunteer was great to see.

And thanks to Ian for filming the lead card.  Can't wait to see the action!

I saw that last night....by one...yep taking a "triple circle 8" on #17 @ waterworks really hurt me and my mouth this weekend.  glad you beat on an old man!   ;D

Had a good time though, moving from last on the last card in the division to placing was nice.....the layout was very tough and challenging as well as opportunities where you could (I just didn't take advantage of them)

One thing that I think with the where should people play theory, throwing out Frank's score and Matt's in Intermediate, I think that everyone else was well within the guidelines of close competitive play.  The same could be said of Elliot in the GM divisions, but age protected, is well age protected, and Elliot has been playing some great golf this summer.

I think that when you look at the scoring spread of the winners and the next division down, things lined up very well.

The question is if you go with 270 or 360 total Am's next year will it be a 2-day event, or will we just continue to look at 1 day event?
Title: Re: 2013 Midwest Amateur Championships - August 3rd
Post by: DDKC Scott Reek on August 05, 2013, 08:42:36 AM
As of now I dont think I want to go past the 270 mark and I kind of like the one day format for now.  I got a lot of response on players who liked the low entry fee, large players pack and did not have to take away their entire weekend.  One person referred to it as a "One Day A Tier".  As of now I like the idea of a 1 day, 3 course 270 player event, but I am still listening and evaluating a lot of information to decide what should be done.

Feedback is welcome

Cool....I know that the one thing that I like as well though is that we can all look at our scores and see how we fared against everyone.  Going 3 locations will eliminate.

The other thing that I am thinking aloud on here is if it were only 3 rounds...going 2 on Saturday, and then a later start on Sunday @ 10 would be very nice as well with only one round.... ;D

I went and played Cliff (LDO version) yesterday with 5 others that played in the event as well so as golfers we can always play more....

Weather was GREAT for this weekend, but could have been a HOT BOX, so got lucky on that one!

'We all know you wanted to be out there and prove that you could beat us all.  I think that Frank though may have given you a good run at it in that configuration....

I also like the idea of an A tier but if this year would have been an A Tier, than more than 60 players would have had to join the PDGA, which is not a bad thing but it makes me concerned how many I would loose.  Most of the them were INT and Rec players.  I have had the idea also of having the Adv (maybe Masters) as 2 Day A Tier (Required) and the INT and Rec as a 1 Day B Tier.   Again just brainstorming some ideas publicly.

You can have a 2 day B-Tier though, it need not be an "A" tier to run multiple days.

I guess I was thinking the 1 day keeps people from having to dedicate an entire weekend.  The higher divisions would then be showcased for 2 days

How long until you post the video? I was kidding about cutting me out, I'll be able to figure out some flaws if I watch it...

Both rounds will be up by the end of the week. WW will be first, of course.

I just want to say thank you for putting on a great tournament.  It was well organized and thought out.  A huge thank you for all of the water available for the afternoon round at WW!!  I think I drank about a gallon of water during that round.  Those hills were tough on a big man!

As for the entry fee vs players pack, I agree that this was a great players pack for a low fee.  I'd like to say that I made it home with everything, but my stool didn't fare so well!!  It only made it about half way through the first round before collapsing.

As to the additional rounds, A vs B tier etc...  I would like to see a similiar format next year.  I can see a case for making the Advanced an A tier, and or having them play a third round, but leave at least the Rec div to play an easier layout.  I have heard quite a few people comment that Rec is mostly younger players.  That may be true, but it's also for inexperienced players, or players who just want to go and have fun in a competition environment.  I.E. Fat Old men play Rec too :)  Just my $.02!

Again, Great tourney!  I had a blast!

This is the Midwest Amateur Championships.  It's supposed to be a challenging tournament with challenging layouts.  If you want easier layouts, maybe smaller tournaments (like LSDiscs' recent Run for the Roses) would be a better choice for you.  I'm not trying to say your suggestion is a bad one, but for a tournament with a big footprint that could possibly get WAY bigger, I think it should stay challenging.

I personally like 3 rounds, 2 day tournaments.

As a Rec or Adv. Master player, I prefer A-tiers because it prevents non-rated players from playing down.  However, I believe this tournament wasn't too much of problem for that.

If the spirit of the tournament is a Regional (i.e. multi-state) Championship, an A-tier seems to make sense.

I also like to have some sort of function where all players can get involved.  Didn't see any of the Adv. Master, Grandmaster guys all day.  Mini-disc course & night ace race courses are fun.

I agree with this. I also like the two day thing. I was terribly upset when I found out about the way the Wide open was done for the Rec and Int. players (though I understand why Jack made that decision) because I wanted the whole experience but still be competitive at my skill level. I went in to the WO knowing that I wasn't going to be playing for anything but pride and while it was still a good time it was missing the feeling of true competition in my opinion. The MAC had that and it showed by how close the scores were from top to bottom.

I think this tournament went as good as any could have! Perfect weather, course layouts, flow, and gamesmanship among all the cards I saw. I think the only real wait I remember was at Rosedale when a family decided to take a -VERY- leisurely stroll through the middle of #2's fairway. Many thanks to Scott, Pete, Matt and all of the DD crew and an even bigger thank you to all of the volunteers! You guys made this event a major success and I think word of mouth alone will have players chomping at the bit to play this next year.

I really hope that the MAC keeps all divisions on the same schedule. I want to keep the spirit of competition alive throughout all divisions. The way I see it this is supposed to be a "championship" tournament so that should make this competitive and challenging all the way through. And if you think about it, the Intermediate division made up more than 28% of the entire field alone (51/180) and it was still tight scoring. Because we were all at about the same level it made this event that much more enjoyable. Again going back to the WO, the field was exploded after the first round in the advanced division because you had Adv., Int., and Rec all playing in the one division just because they didn't want to miss out on any of the same courses that the Pros played. While it was still fun, it was missing that feeling of "I have a chance!" before you even sent the first drive down the fairway.

In summation, my hope would be to keep all divisions playing the same all of the same courses and make it a true championship for all levels of competition.

Well said, Rob and Andy. 3 rounds, two days, and some opportunity to get together with all divisions. It is a "championship" afterall.
