Title: Ice Bowl 2013
Post by: jack on November 02, 2012, 10:19:08 AM
Ok.

I will start the donations.  I am going to buy 1 PDGA membership for someone at the Ice Bowl.  I am uncertain how I will make this determination (no I won't buy it for myself, but I like your thinking).

I am undecided if I am going to buy it for a NON-PDGA person (meaning they have never been a member), or a renewing member.  My thought was initially that I would buy a membership for the person that brought the most people to the Ice Bowl, regardless, and I may do that.  I may also look at a method to the person that most epitomizes the Ice Bowl, and works the hardest towards it's success (Rick and BoD, and usual suspects don't count, I hope and am inspired by all of you already, and how could I make that determination).

Suffice it to say, I will look a method prior to the event, but wanted to get people thinking about the Ice Bowl as we are about 12 weeks away from having that wonderful weekend upon us again.

Hopefully a new Chili Contest winner (though I hope he returns to feed us) and other items, but I would encourage us all to be thinking about the Ice Bowl and what we can do to make it better this year again!

I might still be learning the disc golf world, but I got the chili part down look out I'm after that title. How many pots of chili can we bring. Think I might just have to make my white potato chili

LOVE IT!

Bring as many as it takes.  We have a contest, but most importantly we work towards feeding the 400 people playing!

I know it was slightly shot down previously but will mention it again. We COULD shorten up the course via Ace Race style and have a tournament within a tournament where we also award the most points via metal and aces. Yes you still play out the entire hole for total score. Thus raising more money by offering another entry for the Ace Race portion of the tournament. Plus still offer mulligans for first round only.
Rick mentioned last year of offering another entry fee for those not accepting their first round score on Saturday to replay their first round on Sunday. Thus raising even more funds which is the real objective. Thus EVERYBODY wins!!

The Ice Bowl will be January 26-27 at Rosedale park.  Once again we will be splitting the donation between Bishop Sullivan Center and Harvesters.

Most everything will be as it was last year.  One of the things that slowed us down last year was CTP, we have kicked around is not having a CTP for all donated items.  One option is to have a CTP for one thing.  Then have a silent auction for some stuff and a raffle or something else for other stuff.  Another option is to not have a CTP at all, just do the silent auction and raffle.  We would like some feed back on this, please.

I like the ball golf CTP where there is a marker stake at the hole of choice and then if someone gets closer they move the marker stake and signs their name. It works with the regular flow of play and doesn't take additional time

I know it's time consuming, takes volunteer effort to run, and probably would raise less $$$ than a silent auction, but the Ice Bowl CTP has always been a lot of FUN!

It is always on the Sunday before the Super Bowl and this year is no exception. This year it will be on Sunday the 27th.  Saturday the 26th will be for getting the first round in to avoid the crowd on Sunday.

Awesome- thanks! I'll add you to the list. We'd like all chili to be brought out to Rosie by 10 am on Sunday if you can. This will allow time to have the judging done and still be able to eat by noon.

Jack I got your message about bringing your chili too.

My message is that I better win this dang thing....I don't even remember the year that I won it's been so long.  If only I would write down what I make, I may be able to replicate it exactly.  That's what sux about being creative in the kitchen, sometimes you can't repeat the dish......I have a couple of tastings in my mind that I am not sure how I made, but were great......So suffice it to say, not only will I bring the winning chili this year, but I am giving away that PDGA membership as well, and working on bringing in at least 5 new people to the event and the sport.

Let's break 500 people this year.

my plans are full that weekend as I am helping out. as far as carrying bags well if I'm not doing an event or have plans and you beat me in the chili contest than yes I will be happy to carry ur bag for a casual round, a league night, or an event that I am not in. and you have to be the one to cook it, not your spouse or parents , grandparents, or hyvee

Ice bowl registration is open at Disc Golf World.  If you want to play one of the rounds on Saturday pre-registration is advised.  There is a maximum of sixsomes per card for the full rounds on Saturday and early Sunday.
We did run out of space on Saturday (only 216 slots) and had to tell people to play their round Sunday.

Working on Hockey Tix for the Ice Bowl as well.  I know that last year we had a blast at the game, and we will be looking to go to another Tuesday night game either the 5th or the 12th of February.

I think that I had 18 tix last year, would like to have as many if not more people there this year!

Good luck with Boulevard. I understand that several have tried to get them involved to no avail. Really odd, they are our local brewery and really don't do much other than get their taps at all the bars.

Let me know how it goes, I have some connections there as well. I will plug the tourney too.

Blvd..........hmmmmmm some good people work there, but their staunch position on how to work within the community has never been a selling point to me personally.  Now working with the folks that work there that disc golf, absolutely other end of the spectrum.

They have a model, and they seem to stick to it, so kudos to them for being consistent.

Having ran 2 world's here in KC though there is a reason that New Belguim Brewery (2003 World's sponsor) and Bell's Brewery (2009 World's Sponsor and 2008 PREMIER sponsor) were used here in Kansas City......

Christie I saw you said you had a generator. Please assure there is enough wattage to handle all the crock pots. I can most likely get my cousin to donate a generator, delivery plus fuel to operate it and I know it will handle the watts needed. If we have a good enough one already then we need to ask people to please bring some extension cords. I know there were several who came through last year otherwise we would have been up a creek without a paddle. Power strips with several plug ins were great last year too.

Registrations are running a bit behind last year, when we ended up tracking 408 contributors to the Ice Bowl. The best way to sign up is to visit Disc Golf World because you can pick up your player's package disc and mini set, as well as purchasing clothing, other plastic, CTP tickets, and mulligans. All purchases enhance our charitable donations.

If you can't make it to DGW, you can call 816.471.3472 and register with a bank card. Or you can fill in your registration form and mail it, along with a check to 509 E 18th St, KCMO 64108. Or you could fill at an entry and then scan it with payment information to icebowl@discgolfworld.com. Or you can fax your entry to 816.471.4653. In these cases, you will pick up your schwag at the Ice Bowl, unless you want to stop by to pick it up earlier.

Ice Bowl in KC is more about celebrating our disc golf community while helping those less fortunate than us than a significant competition. However, we do want as many people to play at least one round, and hopefully both rounds. This is how it works. You need to post an 18-hole score to qualify to play the second round. You can play your 18 hole round on Saturday morning around 9:30 or Saturday afternoon around 1:00 pm. (These times will be finalized.) There will be shot-gun starts for Saturday rounds. Groups will be limited to six per tee. The TD, Ben Crosby, will do his best to accommodate your requests to play with your buds. You can also play your first round on Sunday morning by forming your own group of 5 players and teeing off no later than 10 pm. (You need to get your scorecard turned in by 12:30 pm if you want to be included in the 9-hole round.) Mulligans can be purchased for use during the first round only. Their use is highly encouraged!

Cards are determined for the second round by ranking players by their scores from the first round. This means that you'll likely be very closely matched (or at least have very similar scores) with others on your card. Players will be told which nine holes to play (top 1-9, top 10-18, DU 1-9, DU 10-18),  and the player on each card with the best total score wins a DX disc. The person with the very best overall scores get to keep the traveling trophy for a year. The KC Ice Bowl Champions who have won this trophy are 1998 CD Steiner, 1999 Laron Harris, 2000 Todd Henry, 2001 Al Schack, 2002 Todd Henry, 2003 Mike Davis, 2004 Brant Pfister, 2005 Bobby Villarreal, 2006 Brad Meyrs, 2007 Otto Spiers, 2008 Bryan Guthrie, 2009 Nick Winkelbauer, 2010 Cecil Cameron, 2011 Leo Daprato, 2012 Bryan Guthrie, 2013________?

In partnering with the Missouri Mavericks.  There will be 8 sets of 2 seats given away at the Ice Bowl.  This will be for the Tuesday February 12th game against the Denver Cutthroats.

I know we had a blast last year at the game this year there will be a total of 20 seats all sitting together and should be an absolute blast!

Sunday's potluck lunch is made possible primarily by those who make chili for the Chili Contest. There is no cost to enter the contest. If you're bringing chili, please let me know at rhonda.crosby@gmail.com. Judging starts at 10:30 so make sure to have your chili there before then. Lunch will begin shortly after judging.

If you're not making chili, please bring some food to share, such as chips, veggies, sweets, rum balls, etc. The Kansas City Flying Disc Club will supply the paper goods, beverages, utensils, condiments, and the power. (Thanks to Steve Glover and Nick Arbeitman for the generators.)

Just so you know.....the chili judging requests that the following 5 items are the scale of rating points 1-10 10 being the best.

I will be working hard to reclaim my award winning chili title......but shall I not win, suffice it to say then I will claim shenanigans on all involved! >:( ;D

10 points will be the high score, so a perfect score will be a 30.  typically 28 is what it takes to win.

3 judges.....most a chili can get is 30 points, 10 point max per chili per judge.  Thus 30 points is the maximum a chili can get and hence the logic of 30 points.

I know math is hard for some....deducing apparently harder for others......

First off, I would like to thank our entire community for coming out to help show support of our cause for the hungry in KC.  It says a lot about our community of disc golfers to bring new people out to meet some steady influences, and it is a good time to see some that can't give as much of their time still make it out to this annual winter fun.

That being said, conrgats to true champion Eric McCabe.  Eric won the championship over myself in a 3 hole playoff yesterday, and couldn't have been a better competitor in the fashion.  He wanted to have both of our names put on the award, but alas, only one winner--(though true ice bowl fashion I think that there are many winners!) can have the name engraved on that trophy!

Suffice it say E-Mac was hot on the final 9 shooting 7 birdies to finish and force the playoff, and when it's the top level world champion like him versus me....well......I think that Eric Kolkmeier said it best afterwards.  "We would have loved for you to win, but I am not certain that any of us could have handled you for the rest of the year!"   ;D ;D ;D

I think that the chili registrants were down from 26 last year to 23 this year.  I am unsure of who won (it wasn't me or any of the other smack talkers in here!!) but I want to thank everyone who took time out of their lives to make some chili and bring it to send some love to the disc golf course.  The folks that donate their chili have a love that goes deep in all of us.  Cooking is a strong form of love and by bringing it out to the park on a cold winter day for all to enjoy, they are letting you know that they love each of you (yes even those that we may not like online, or in person for extended periods!  8) :o ) and appreciate your bothering to come out and play!

I am sure that there will be many a follow up to the event from the long list of people that helped, to the list of players, and most importantly to the charities that benefit from it.  I want to just say that I am thankful that each of you that made it out there this weekend helped to solidify yet again that we are a great disc golf community, we have great people surrounding us, and we have people that are now working hard towards ensuring our success for disc golf community remains strong in the years to come.

Thanks so much for allowing the fun of playing in another great Kansas City Tradition.  Now if you weren't there, it's not too late to go purchase a players pack from Disc Golf World, and fake it as though you were to continue to help out the charities!!!!   ;D 8) :-*

Not sure if there is some ongoing notes for IB 2014, we may want to ask 75th Street Brewery, or ManKind brewery for beer donations.  While I don't personally know Micah Weichert of ManKind, what I do know of him and comments I've heard from people that know him personally, donating beer for charity would seem to be right up his alley.

Numbers are being crunched now.  We will have scores, number of players, and donations as soon as it is all finalized.  Ice Bowl is not a typical event where when its done on Sunday it is over.  There were a lot of numbers flying around Sunday night but none of them are official and I don't want to give out wrong info.  Please be patient and everything will be posted soon.

E-Mac=65 (Won Championship after 3 hole sudden death playoff)
J Lowe=65 (Lost championship see above comment)
Other people played.....

I think that is all that anyone needs to know right?

Thanks "Guth"!

Just what I needed. I did 11 better and even played my final nine down under! I guess I have improved a bit. Next year I might be throwing with EMac and Jack! Ha!

Good morning,

I want to bring something up about how the tournament was run, but want to say up front that I'm not upset at all.  As someone who has put in countless (literally) hours in a non-profit organization over 7+ years, I greatly appreciate hard work done by volunteers.  Still, if issues are not reviewed or discussed then improvement will not happen.

When I signed up for Ice Bowl on 1/17 at the store, I forgot to notate if I was playing Sat, Sun, 1 round or 2.  Dick graciously called me on my mobile asking which I replied two rounds on Sunday.

When I checked in on Sunday AM, I informed them I was playing two rounds.

When I turned in the round card, nothing was said.  One of the volunteers (name purposely not given) gave me the card back 15 minutes later asking who was and wasn't playing 2nd round.  I found all 5 other players, marked the card with a Y or N next to name and turned it back in.  My name was marked Y.

During lunch, my name was called out as double checking on second round.  I checked in again stating I was playing 2nd round, this with a 2nd different volunteer (again name left out on purpose - but I know them all by name)

Sometime later, as my double checking personality started to kick in, I checked in again to make sure.

Then when the cards/groups were posted, my card was missing.  I asked a third volunteer about it and was told to jump in on a card and have them write my name down, which I did.

I now see in the scores above (Rob Martin) that my second round score was not recorded.

So...I checked in / or informed four different people a total of six different times.  My 2nd card was not retained and my score was not recorded.

If this was a PDGA tournament, I would be pissed as hell.  Since this was a benefit and didn't have any real significance, I'm slightly annoyed but not offended.  It is easy to criticize from the outside, but all of the volunteers definitely looked like they were working their ass off, which is EXTREMELY appreciated.  I sincerely mean this when I say, THANK YOU.

My point is, all of us should strive to improve how we do things, running a tournament, etc.  Heck, the day afterwards, I posted on how we could improve the beer donations and contacted 4 people on helping me to brew next years homebrew donation.  I intend to personally get involved in the beer donations next year to try to get some fresh faces (ManKind, etc.).

I'll be back for next years Ice Bowl...with a larger contribution of homebrew.  Let's try to improve the retention of who's playing and who isn't and the scores they throw.

Thanks guys!

Rob Martin

I'm going to quote the great and honorable Fred Smith here:

Two rules for life
1.  Don't sweat the small stuff
2.  Everything is small stuff

2 Rules of Ice Bowl
1.  This event cannot be postponed or canceled due to inclement weather.
2.  No Wimps!!   No Whiners!!

Suffice it to say this wasn't a tournament that everything gets crossed and double checked.  This is an event to get people out of their houses in the middle of the winter and remember why we have a good community here.

The ultimate goal is for us to provide to the charities to show that we are ambassadors of our sport that loves to give back to our community.

I bet that had you sent a private note to any of the people running the event they would have corrected the error and included your second round score.  Since there really isn't a prize for any place, score is subjective at best.  I bought 22 mulligans for crying out loud....so my score represents what I bought and used (I had 7 left over) but isn't a true reflection on my playing on the day.

With all that being said, I am sure the scores can be corrected.  This event should be about anything other than having a fun time out in the park on a cold winters day.  If it were to be taken seriously, it would be a tournament, and not an event.  This is an event!  The tourneys are right around the corner, and if those issues happen then by all means step up and scream it, but for the Ice Bowl....lets move ahead and figure out why we didn't have as many people this year, and what we can do to have more next year!

Woah guys.

My post was (as stated) an attempt to point out some issues in a friendly manner.

Don't fear gentle observations.

Thanks....

I think Jack's point is, it's Ice Bowl.

If this were a PDGA sanctioned tournament, I could see posting the big scrawl about how you're disappointed with the score keeping procedures.  But since it's for Ice Bowl, normally someone just says, "the scores are incorrect for me".  Someone else says, "OK", it gets fixed and people move on.

With that many people, some minor clerical errors are bound to happen, no biggie.  Plus, the rum balls and other various intoxicants can make for a little looser time than usual.

Oh, and I'm not afraid at all of gentle observation, particularly since I don't help out much anymore.  To me, it's Ice Bowl.  They could've put the wrong scores down for me, I don't really care at all.

I'm an integral part of Lawrence Brewers Guild.  We put on Brewfest every September where we serve 70 kegs to over 300 people.  A lot of beer is consumed not only during the 6 hours of the actual fest, but during the 48 hours of camping before and after.  There are 4 committees, each with 5-10 people on them to coordinate logistics, beverge, food and music.  Lots of people, all volunteers, lots of beers, lots of personalities over two whole days.

After every Brewfest we talk about what went well and what we could improve on.

The bigger point is not my individual score.  The point I was attempting to review was how could someone could check-in six different ways with 3-4 different people, yet something not happen they way it should.  There is an opportunity for improvement in the player check-in and verification process.

My error in thinking that this type of review would be helpful.  I apologize for bringing it up.

Rob,

Rest assured your feedback has not gone unnoticed. "Constructive Criticism" as they call it, helps identify where things can be improved. This makes a better environment for players and volunteers.

Thanks for your input and your participation in the Ice Bowl!~

Side note: we'll have to hook up soon and trade!

laters...

During my wife's round on Sunday morning in which I caddied for her and played too, I packed her discs into my bag with most of my regular ones I carried and two full water bottles, I said my shoulders and back were getting sore.  My wife quickly told me to "stop whining", which I promptly did.  I definitely needed some beers though during lunch.  I had played over 100 holes in 3 days, with two rounds of Rosie on Friday (with Fri traveling league), 2 rounds on Saturday (up top and down under), one round Sunday morning,  and the final nine.  However, she gets it as do I.

Rob, my point was to bust your balls a touch, not to take it so seriously.  Any feedback to make it better is good.  Please don't construe my tone online as an edict to stop informing of ideas to make it better.  If we didn't listen, I wouldn't have had mulligans on Saturday still!
 ;D

All notes help- those that are working/running it, and chances are people will remember it next year while running it!

Yes, it's Ice Bowl, and it's casual, but there's nothing wrong with accuracy. I took a close look at both the scoreboard cards and the scorecards, and found a few scores that had not been entered, some scores that I punched in incorrectly, and some names that were misspelled. Please let me know of any other inaccuracies.

Our updated body count includes 384 players, staff, and contributors with 211 who played both rounds, 99 who played one round, and 74 others. We're still accepting donations or selling packages at Disc Golf World. Our donation to Harvesters and Bishop Sullivan is currently right around $6300.

And yet all I heard through all of this was "I bought 22 mulligans" from Jack.  At 2 mulligans for $5 that comes to .... $362.79 I think. The extra is the taxing effect of all of us having to hear he almost beat emac. So grateful mulligans could not be used on the final 9!  HAHAA!!! btw: Cliff Drive @ 11 today 2/9/13

DId I mention the 16 Hockey tickets as well......or the 10 gallons of Chili?  :-)

For those of you that took the hockey tickets from the CTP's, remember the game is tomorrow night.

There are beer/drink specials from 5:30-6:30, and generally on a Tuesday night there are some other type of specials.

I look forward to seeing you all there!

BTW, next year I will use all my mulligans, and not throw some away as I did this year.....though I did enjoy selling them to a few folks, but selling them for $1/ea isn't a great way to make money at it now is it?
