Tell us about the weird disc in your bag!
« on: July 10, 2015, 12:27:51 AM »
There's discs that everyone's got, and everyone uses, and everyone recognizes by name, and everyone understands. This thread is not about those discs.

Do you have a disc in your bag that nobody else recognizes? When you use it, do people ask "what the heck is that," and after you tell them the name, they are no closer to understanding? Show it off!

I'll go first:

-- What's that: It's an Innova Star Skeeter.
-- WHAT? I said, "it's an Innova Star Skeeter."
-- Where the heck did you get that thing? It was in the bin at Play it Again Sports. I liked how it felt in my hand.
-- BUT WHAT THE HELL IS IT? I'll tell ya. It's a speed 5 domey midrange in a gummy plastic that flies straight where I threw it with almost no turn or fade. It glides forever and ever with just a modest fling, and if I aim it at the right spot, it's money in the bank. I use it for point-and-shoot unimpeded shots at the basket from within 150' or so, or tunnel shots through the forest.

Is there anything it doesn't do? Yeah. A lot, actually. It hates being thrown super-hard. It'll turn over and burn out. It is easily abused by high winds. If the anemometer is showing over 9 MPH breezes, it stays in my bag. It really doesn't like being hyzer-bombed or -spiked. This is a disc that just wants to fly straight from point A to point B with no drama. Considering that my form is bad and I usually add a lot of bonus drama to every throw, a nice serene straight flyer like this is more than welcome in my bag.

I would be gutted if I lost my Star Skeeter.

Your turn!

I have what is called original frisbee disc. It's a putter. 171 grams. Made in Mexico in 2003 by Whamo Inc. It's got these ridges on the top where you would put your thumb during a putt. Really stiff. Never seen another like it. Found at the bottom of the hill on hole 5 down under. No name or number. I think someone might have chucked it down there on purpose.

People that have known me a while know about the Griffin. For those that don't....

The Griffin - It was manufactured briefly by Innova in the mid 90s then was pulled off the market. It was originally billed as "unbreakable under normal circumstances." It's a "meathook" according to doc. An overstable, smaller diameter midrange but was originally considered a driver. It compares to the Gateway Demon but is more overstable than a Drone. I can throw it into a gale-force headwind and it won't turn over. It is an essential part of my bag and I've carried one since 1995. I use it mostly for underhanded approaches but also use it to spike-hyzer over tall objects. I still have the first one I ever bought and have purchased several more over the years off of Ebay for at least twice what they used to sell for new.

I have a Discraft Xpress in elite X plastic. It is an understable driver I uses for a roller and throw in strong tailwinds.

That would be an Epic. I throw Coyotes. About the only person I know in Kansas City that does.

I have an RDG Scale that I don't throw often but is useful when you need a glideless brick.

I don't have any weird disc. They are all awesome and sexy. Yes they are. Some would laugh at my bag of Valks, Beasts, Roadrunners,Wizards, Wraiths, and Eagles,  but hey that damn Coyote never caught that Roadrunner now did he? Beep! Beep! :)
