Title: Course Records
Post by: coops on April 09, 2013, 08:03:56 AM
I feel like we should have some sort of repository for area course records. Maybe an official thread, or something else you Forum Moderators could dream up that I don't even know to suggest. I was thinking only 'official' records too; those that are set in league rounds or tournament rounds.

Birdland - Jake Bowen 51
Old Pike - Ken 'Tank' Franks 40
dubs Ken 'Tank' Franks and Kevin Vetch 37
Cliff Drive - Matt Orum 45
Water Works - Todd Henry 39
Blue Valley (Big) - Avery Jenkins 53
                  (Little) - Will Schusterick 44
Swope - dubs Todd Henry and Otto Spiers 36
PHill - Dean Uhlman and Andy Lewis 40
Wyco - Dave Hemmeline 45
Blackthorn - Joe Hesting 47
Prairie Center - Dave Hemmeline 40
Shawnee Mission Park - Kevin Tulp 44
Jesse James - Cooper Arnold 46

the tough thing we have with course records is that, like Swope, there are so many pin locations...

I thought about that but then thought it is just going to be easier in the long run to keep one record per course. It would be absurd to say "Swope record when 1 is long, rocks are OB and 13 isn't short..." etc...

That being said, there should/could be an alternate listing for something special like Swope Gold, though that changes from year to year too.

Could do dubs too but I would think it would be nice to know your partner.

I might have Jesse James with a 46 but won't list it till someone either confirm or denies that.

THe configuration of our courses in town prevents us from really having a true "best score ever" mentality.  Swope Gold is perfect case, as it will be vastly different this year than from last year.

We know about Todd hitting a 39 at league at WW when #8 was longest uphill.....Matty O with his 43 @ Cliff during Worlds, Avery and his 51 @ BV (though this year BV will be longer than it was in Worlds)...Rosie, I mean really there are so many low 40's and it is almost as bad as Swope with multiple pin placements.

It would be hard to say this is record on "this" configuration......

Yeah, I mentioned that already. It is one of the unfortunately consequences of our course structure but doesn't mean we can't at least keep records for each tract of land.

I seem to remember that Hemme shot a 40 or something like that at PC.

It was a glow dubs deal back when PHill first went in and the course did not include north of the lake finger.  A bunch of people camped out for a tourney and we all played a glow round starting about 9:00 at night....we cashed $80 with that win.

Ya..it was something like that....you could probably search the PC league posts and find that....but it was also before the config change to 12-15

Pretty sure it was a Solstice dubs when Todd and Otto went 36 first round and 37 the second....not sure, but I'm pretty sure they birdied every hole first round at swope.

Either way, Matty O remains the only disc golfer to shoot a 45 at Cliff. I'm sure there have been a few non-disc golfers who've shot 45s at Cliff. ;D

Memories, I remember 1 I guess, so I was thinking of 51, but it was a 53, I should look at the PDGA scores BEFORE typing in here with all the geniuses we have.... ;D

The Mando on #9 @ BV went in after 2006 I believe or 2007.... was in effect in 2008, as in 2007 Ron Convers hit a 59 on BV and was the first to do so, thus taking the bounty out on the course that I had of $100 for first sub 60 round in tournament play.  Followed up by Brinster (57) and Markus (58) coming in lower, then Nate and Crabtree also shot under (58).....

I feel weird about including Cali (especially since I doubt anyone remembers if it was double or single).

If there is consensus it'll be put on but as for now I'm leaving it off.

If we are going to list the best rounds, we might as well list the worst rounds too. And we could list the number of DNF's per KCFDC member per course. And I know there is some number nerd out there dying to figure out how much each of us has won at leagues. It would be interesting to know how much Arturo has won, etc. And who has the most aces; the biggest number ever put up on one hole (I think I have an 18 on one hole). Just curious...

Well... going for worst.  I know I have probably shot worse but the worst I ever recorded was during the second round of my first PDGA event in Smithville.  I recorded an 89 at Woodhenge.  My best was at the DUI with my first sub 60 round shooting a 59 down under.

Player's Cup on hole 1. The strokes didn't count so I Tin Cupped the approach shot.

The hole was a huge drive to a lay up area. Then you could either play safe and go the long way around, or pump a huge hyzer shot over the OB and try to drop it on the well-protected green. I opted for the latter. My first drive (1) landed perfectly at the lay up area. Approach attempt 1 (2) missed. So did attempts 2 (4), 3 (6), 4 (8), 5 (10), 6 (12), 7(14), but I made it on attempt 8 (16). I then missed my putt (17) and had a drop in for an 18. Mr. Williams, already pissed off took a 4 and won the hole. I never conceded the hole to him and that pissed him off more than the amount of time it took me to reach the green.

I took a "12" on #12 during Cliff Drive league once, through a combination of road OBs and going all the way down the hill to the right. IIRC, it was a drive OB, another OB from DZ, then a pissed-off lefty hyzer throw from DZ that went high and blew to the bottom of the hill, several attempts to get back up the hill that hit trees and rolled back down, then finally a successful throw to get up the hill that overshot the fairway and went back OB, then a missed OB putt, then finally a hole out. Yes, it was infuriating.

Cooper, Sheet 35 of the Phill league post has Dan's compilation of all league scores from 2007 through 10/2011.  This is what Dan had for records:

Low round before course re-config: 39 on 3/9/2008 Leo DaPrato/Steve Dresser, 3/16/2008   Leo DaPrato/Otto Spiers, 3/16/2008 Heberto Villarreal/Cali

Low round after course re-config: 39 on 6/13/2010 Ken Franks/Mike Davis

Great work Dan for keeping all of those stats!

After much thought and careful consideration, I don't think heckling Mr. Williams or even talking to him at all would be necessary. Rather, I think simply following him closely while video recording with my phone may elicit the Youtube moment we're looking for. If he asks why I'm following him and recording video with my phone, I'll just pretend to be a deaf mute by making funny faces, shaking my head, shrugging my shoulders, and gesturing toward my mouth with my free hand. Picture that, you know it's funny.

After opening my mouth and calling Loomis' 18 epic I shot a 17 at Municipal on hole 8 (380ft) during the GBO.  The winds were so bad when I was putting that I had to straddle put and just lean into the wind as I was on a hill and I just used the wind to hold me up.  I tried to lay up and the disc hit the ground by the basket and shook for a few seconds before taking off.  My second put was more of an approach than put.  I landed it on the ridge of the hill up wind of the pin a little further than I would have liked but I was very happy with it.  I threw my put and it hit center chains but when it hit the post it lifted up and took off  again this time coming to rest on the ridge about 15 ft down wind.  I threw my put and it to my excitement hit the chains perfectly and the disc which had about 6 inches to go.  I then started yelling "drop" as a surge of wind on top of the already gail force wind held the disc in place.  It then started to to very slowly start to rise.  It took off nearly rolling into the pond about 40 ft away.  This continued until I was robbed of another put that hit the bottom of the basket prior to lifting up and out of bounds.  I finally ended it with a nerve racking 50 ft  approach that was pinned against the hill at the base of the basket.  I ran full sprint to the disc with my mini in hand so I could prevent another serge from sending my poor putter airborne again.   From there I was able to place the disc carefully in the basket.

I had a really hot round going on the last day of the GBO, and then I took a 10 on hole eighteen at the country club to end out of the money. A 10. And the worst part of it - I misplayed the hole. I mistakenly went to the drop zone after I went OB on my upshot and not my drive. I should have gone to the island where it went out and played it from there. That would have dropped five strokes. But, in the heat of my moment, I didn't take the time to evaluate the situation before I played it. So now this is the greatest "F" up of my career. Gotta take your time and think about your options. Gotta think.

No one on your card told you that either?  I stopped Aric from doing that there this year.  I mean I get it at some point we don't talk, but that is a scenario that you really need to step above the issue and help the scenario before it breaks down.....

Fred and I were tied up, or pretty close at the time, and he was having his own issues with the hole; and the other guy on our card had already mentally collapsed before hole one and wasn't in the game. And really, I think it is my responsibility to play it correctly, and not the other players who are trying to beat me. This was on me.

Shooting -14 on old p hill course is a good score.  Shooting -14 on the newer version would be insane.  That needs an asterisk by it.  Haha
Title: Re: Course Records
Post by: jack on April 16, 2013, 11:17:13 AM
I get that Loomis.  It is all our responsibility to know the rules.  Apparently everyone thinks that an OB disc can't be retrieved to throw again.  I am not sure who started that rumor....but......the only thing you may be able to get them for would be 30 seconds.  Now, a Mandatory I believe that you have to leave it...but I am foggy on that, it may have changed as well...

Still, common practice in a "gentlemans game" should indicate that we help each other, because there will be a day when you will be in need of that some help.

I took a triple circle ten on 7 at cc!

Jack, the OB retrieval rule was brought up on my card at Muni. Rizzloe retrieved a disc from an OB shot to throw on the next. I didn't get my pdga rule book in time and no one had a current one...

I can't find anything in the rule book that states you can't use a disc that went OB.  In fact I can't find in the Mando section currently either (now i haven't scoured the rule book for it yet, but I will).  I could be thinking of an older version of the rules, because the entire Mando section was basically redone this year.  So it may in fact be that now you can go and get a disc that was thrown missing the Mando, but you then can call the person on 30 seconds....The 30 second rule got a big beefy update this year for certain....winds like this past weekend could have made it tough on players to really enforce it.

As far as I understand it, you can retrieve your disc and throw it again as long as you do it within 30 seconds of approaching your lie. I know it use to be 30 seconds from when you placed your mini, but that was changed this year to when you address your lie or something to that effect.

In the Introduction section on the rules page...

"You are now allowed to retrieve a disc after a stance violation (the excessive time rule still applies of course). "

"The 30-second clock (excessive time) now starts when you reach your disc, rather than after you mark it, since a disc may not be marked. You can no longer stand over your disc holding your mini for an indefinite amount of time."
