Title: New Course Potential in Prairie Village
Post by: jhinck2 on May 23, 2013, 10:52:49 AM
A fellow co-worker of mine who lives in PV sent me this link and thought I'd share.  Does anyone know who put this in the minds of PV parks and rec?  Or, is disc golf actually gaining traction in our parks and rec departments just by word of mouth?

http://pvpost.com/2013/05/21/disc-golf-course-new-playgrounds-among-pratical-improvements-suggested-by-pv-parks-committee-18489#respond (http://pvpost.com/2013/05/21/disc-golf-course-new-playgrounds-among-pratical-improvements-suggested-by-pv-parks-committee-18489#respond)

It looks to be just a little dinker course, but that's how it all begins!  I'll never forget my first days at William Yates!

P.S. Anyone who has a Facebook account should go to bat on these negative disc golf comments below the article...

As a Mission resident, this would be a very welcomed addition to the area - 9 holes or not.  Rosedale is great, but attempting to play solo is generally frustrating due to how busy it is during all hours of the day.

Based on the comments it seems the suburban moms aren't aware of any of the benefits disc golf.  :(

I sure hope the plan goes through!

I just posted on the article.  They were questioning if was really that high of demand.  Feel free to add additional comments.  You're right Adam, they don't necessarily know what they are talking about and we need to help educate them... as nicely as possible.

I zoomed in on a satellite image of the area and it looks like an excellent place for a nine-hole course. I expect it would get played a lot year-round.

I used to hang out in that park after school back in the day throwing the ultimate disc around, that was about the only action that land ever got.

Well, shoot that is right next to Paul Henson YMCA. I have pushed for DG as a youth sport in the YMCA and was successful. I am sure I could get the YMCA onto this if it helps it helps

Yup it sure is. I would love having this course in that park as that is where I went to high school.

We have been in contact with the Prairie Village Parks & Recreation Department about this possible course.  We are working with them on some literature which they will present to the city council to try to get approval and funding.  The city council is working on their 2014 budget so the course will not be going in this year.

How Awesome, a huge thank you to Mike Petin and Ben Crosby!  They managed to get courses ready for the KCWO, run the course and get Prairie Village approval all in the same week.

Somebody obviously did a sh$%tty job of researching.  "Only 2 courses on the Kansas side of the metro area, and zero in Johnson County"  Whaaa?  I guess whatever they have to do to convince these PV mom's to put a course in is okay by me:)

I did walk over to the park(about 3/4 of a mile from my house), and checked it out last night.  I am even more excited!  It will make a super fun little 9-holer!  Perfect winter course when the days are short and I get off work with only an hour to spare.

Can't wait!

I like that the picture they used was fron Dave's last putt on the final nine from last years wide open but the text, posted June 21, 2013, reads:

"Hundreds of spectators gathered at Swope Park’s disc golf course LAST WEEKEND for the “Kansas City Wide Open” Professional Disc Golf Association tournament. (Photo via Kansas City Wide Open)."

But reguardless of the misinformed press, I am higly excited for this course as my mother lives across the street from SM East. One more round of congratulations to Mike and Ben for getting this approved!!!

I have a plan for Super-class this Sunday the 13th.  I would like to play the proposed course at Austin Harmon Park in Prairie Village.  Was out there walking my dogs and throwing the frisbee this last weekend, and decided I don't want to wait til it's built to play it.

We will play the proposed 9 hole layout, and I would like to add 3 killer holes to go along with it.  2 rounds for 24 holes. I need some help with some more portable baskets though(I have 2), and I need some up-front commitments, so we can make this happen.  A good 5-6 more baskets and I can make it work.

I haven't heard any more news on this course anyway, so you never know if they are changing their plans on building it.  So maybe we can get a good showing out there and get some good photos as proof of the actual Interest in a disc golf course.

Please respond if you can bring a basket and/or you are interested in playing.

Sunday at 8:30, Austin Harmon Park, 79th & Delmar, PV-KS  Superclass discs only - but I will try to bring some extras out as well.  Probably play dubs.

I walked off some holes to check distances.  Not precise but pretty close.
1-230ft
2-300ft
3-288ft
4-207ft
5-219ft
6-216ft
7-270ft

9-182ft
10-162ft(Island)

Invitation to Hawk Ridge Park workshop Oct. 15th
We are happy to report that many citizens of Raymore have been offering their opinions about how to improve Hawk Ridge Park.  The online comments and the community dialogue has been great.  Let’s keep the conversation going!

You are invited to a Vision Workshop for Hawk Ridge Park on Tuesday, October 15th at 7:00 PM.  It will be held at the Community Bank of Raymore (801 W. Foxwood Drive) and is open to the public.  The masterplanning team will report what they are hearing from citizens, share ideas from other communities, and help lead the group toward a shared vision for Hawk Ridge Park.

Please help us spread the word. If you can, display the poster included below at your place of work.  We'll see you on October 15th!

(A second workshop will be held on November 5th at the Community Bank of Raymore at 7:00 PM.)

We used to wait until the season actually was over to play Homie to get a better turnout. But the seasons have gotten longer with events since then.

Rob, I think you are talking about Roe Park, which OP was thinking about putting in a course.  Unfortunately there is  not enough room there for a course with all the softball and soccer fields.  Too much of a liability.  So OP is looking into another area.

The course that is going in Prairie Village is at Harmon Park, at 79th & Mission Road, right by PV pool.

Not to interject between you two (Rob & White) but i have been pondering where a solid Disc course could go in Overland Park and I think I have found a great location. Quivira Park. It says that there is 43.33 acres of land there, but let me put an asterisk on that. First, search it on Google maps (the one with the Google earth view). OK so as you can see there is about 90 parking stalls there + restrooms. Just north before 119th street there is Indian creek and it is surrounded by woods on all sides minus the Quivira side. Here's the thing, just south, if you scroll down you will see my place of work (Overland Park Golf Course). MOST of that woods is technically ours so it is not included within the estimated acreage, but with some city convincing it could be used in this circumstance. It has good elevation changes, not like Water Works, but more like Swope, and a few creeks that run through there. I know that our (ball golf) master plan has us cutting new holes through the south east side, but almost none of that woods along the bike hike trail going up to the wee links par 3 course is going to be used. It would take a good architect with great vision, but it would be a great place, in a mostly unused park (because most people just bike and hike from their homes not park and do so around that area). The upsides are that it would be very close to the KU Edwards campus, short distance from a few high schools and JCCC, and in an area that is lacking a true Disc course. I think I will e-mail the parks supervisor tomorrow and run the idea by him, but I wanted to get a little feed back from you all to see what you think?

I think that area looks possible from above on google maps.  I have not personally been out there, but from the map, it looks like there is plenty of room for a course, and it is a great location for OP residents.  I would be surprised if the Golf Course would let you put some holes on their land, but I don't work for them ;)  Maybe you could convince them.

Let me know what the city says when you email them.

Supposedly getting put up to bid on this month, and then it is first on the list of Projects to begin, starting in August.  The Parks designer for PV told me he sees no reason why it should not be in the ground by Labor Day.  But we will see...

It will have nice new Discatchers though  ;D...with either Blue bands and white lettering, or Forest Green bands with yellow lettering.  Haven't heard what the decision is yet.

Update:

8/12/2014 - We are pleased that the 2014 Parks Projects will soon be underway.  The contractor will be out at Santa Fe Park to install the tee pads for Disc Golf, which is scheduled for completion by September 30, 2014.  The first work at McCrum Park will be the installation of the conduit to facilitate the move of the overheard utilities to their new underground location.  The tennis court rehabilitation at Harmon Park is currently underway and is scheduled for completion by November 21, 2014.
