Title: YOUR TOP TEN FAVORITE KC COURSES!
Post by: dickthediscparker on August 29, 2008, 02:27:23 PM
Ok so here we go.  This is my TOP TEN list of kansas city course.  Remember this is not to be debated and critized, just a way to see differences in opinion.  At some point if we get at least 10 people to input I'll average out the answers and round it off.  1 being the TOP of your list.

1. Cliff Drive (I believe this courses forces you to play every shot in every situation, A MUST PLAY)
    I know I know... CEMENT!
2. Water Works - I mean ... come on, its... WATER WORKS!
3. Rosedale UP TOP - When set in a challenging config, it can make or break a player!
4. BLUE VALLEY - Tough decision there
5. Rosedale DOWN UNDER - there is NO better league in my opinion than winters down under! 12:30 every
Saturday after the DAYLIGHT SAVINGS switch.
6. WYCO
7. Prairie Center
8. Swope
9. Blue Valley 9 hole Junior course
10.Shawnee Mission

I believe the baskets are gone from Ted's Dred so I don't know if it's a "COURSE" anymore.  But agreed on honorable mention!!  I amend that to my list.

Yeah, I should have stated that I have not played Prairie Center or Shawnee Mission. Any course that causes me to have to cross the line into that God-awful state of Kansas automatically gets points deducted, hence Rosedale's place on my list. ;D

I have to say, we are a lucky KC to have so many courses in our area. They all have their highlights, whether it be area, views, a special hole, or the whole course.

1). Cliff Drive
2). Rosedale
3). Blue Valley
4). Wyco
5). Waterworks
6). Prairie Center
7). Swope
8). Down Under

I do like William Yates a ton, Blue Valley Junior Course, Pleasant Hill, and, well, Shawnee Mission Park has a couple of really neat holes, especially #2. I stay away currently due to seed tick activity. Ted's goes without saying. I only had one chance to play it this year, and it was damn nice to play that course, even though it snowed on us. Yeah KC. Challenging. Aesthetically pleasing, and amazing courses.

This is from Forbes this year:

In Depth: America's Best Places To Raise A Family
It's qualities like these that landed Hamilton County atop Forbes' list. Ozaukee County, Wis., and Johnson County, Kan. came in second and third. All earn high marks for their low cost of living, reasonably priced homes and short commute times. They also offer terrific schools, one of the most important characteristics to consider when choosing a place to raise a family.

Of course, Missouri is a great place too if you like messed up school districts, crappy roads, and meth labs.

Now, my list:
1. Which ever park I happen to be in at the time. Every one is more fun than my office.

It's funny that beating your kid behind close doors came in third behind Every Sunday after church and At the dinner table during evening Prayers.

1. Blue Valley - It's what separates us from the rest of the Disc Golf community. The added danger of being mugged or finding a body or medical waste makes it even more exciting. Valkyries lost - 1
2. Prairie Center - Most people hate it and can't play it well. It punishes you with its simplicity. I have never heard more b%tching over trees in all my life. This course shows us who the whiners are. Valkyries lost - 0
3. Wyco - I have never lost a disc here. I love the views, the lay-out and the solitude. A great course to pull a muscle trying to reach 13 or build a house and watch sunsets. Valkyries lost - 0
4. Waterworks - Hole 1 sucks you in with that impressive view and the challenging lay-out keeps you riveted. Valkyries lost - 1
5. Swope - Short or long, it too plays you for a fool. There's less whining here, but a lot of lessons are learned the hard way on this course. Valkyries lost - 0
6. Cliff Drive - I've only played it once, but it was a great course. Again: bodies, medical waste, mugging.... excellent! Valkyries lost - 1
7. Shawnee Mission - It's easy to get mad at the course for being too easy or too lame, and then have a bad round because you let your mind beat you. I like that you have to "play the ticks" for this course. No medical waste or bodies, but you do have to fight off kites, rockets and health nuts. Valkyries lost - 1
8. Rosedale (upper) - Bring your flippiest discs. It always feels good to play it well, more than any of the other courses. Valkyries lost - 3
9 Rosedale (lower) - Love the lay-out. Sadly, I can't afford all the Calomine lotion it takes to recover from playing it. Valkyries lost - 0
10. Pleasant hill. Again, I've only played it once, but it was a good time. This, sadly, falls to the bottom of the list purely based on the distance it takes to travel to it. Valkyries lost - 0
I have not played the other courses but I would like to.
Honorable mention: Depending on how you view the metro area, Jones Park in Emporia is pretty high on the list.

Wow, spoken like a true person who doesn't know jack Sh*t about Missouri.  The Missouri highway system is the most extensive in the nation.  The State of Missouri maintains 32,340 miles of highway.  The State of Kansas only maintains 9600 miles of highway, despite the fact that Kansas is about 20% larger in area than Missouri.  That means there are a lot of paved roads in Missouri where Kansas might have dirt or gravel, if they have a road there at all.  Yeah, I-70 in Missouri sucks. But, Missouri has been able to maintain the massive highway system despite having lower taxes than Kansas and no toll roads.

The school districts in Missouri are just fine.  The North Kansas City, Blue Springs, Park Hill, Liberty, Lee's Summit, and Independence school districts are all well respected in the metro area, just as Shawnee Mission, Blue Valley, and Olathe are in Kansas.  If you want to bring up KCMO, I'll bring up KCK.

Yes, there are more meth lab arrests in Missouri per capita than in Kansas.  Of course, Missouri is being more aggressive than Kansas in shutting these extremely dangerous places down.  There were 32 meth lab busts in 2007 in Jackson, Platte, and Clay counties last year.  There were only 97 in the entire state of Kansas.

Oh, and by the way...my favorite 3 course right now are:

1. Water Works
2. Cliff Drive
3. Rosedale

there are fewer jayhawks in missouri than there are in kansas.  this clearly proves kansas is the superior state.

As a beginner this summer at this fine sport of disc golf, I have tried to play as many courses as I can get around to.

So here is my list as a person that cannot throw the dang thing 800 feet :)

1.  Water Works Park - Just a fantastic design and great views of the city.  Long enough to challenge but short enough to reach.

2.  Pleasant Hill - It is the most well maintained park I have played.  Not as challenging, but I enjoy getting a 2 or 2 in my round :)  The rough part for me is the distance from my house :(

3.  Rosedale Up_Top - Being that I live in Mid_Town it is the closest for me to go play.  I love this place and I love that they change the layout so frequently.

4.  Rosedale Down_Under - Again it is just a great park and having this kind of versitle counterpart to the Up_Top is outstanding.

5.  Shawnee Mission Park - It is pretty far out of the way for me but the park is really nice.  I like that the really long holes are down hill.

6.  Prairie Center - I just played this course on Thursday.  The challenge of having all of the trees around was a great way to design this course.  The mix of holes was a real delight.

7.  Swope - I think I would gravitate to this one a little more if they could clear out the gulch.  If a disk makes it's way there, there it will stay :(  However, I have still had a great time each time I have played it.

8.  Cliff Drive - From what I hear a lot of people have done a lot of work since I played it last.  I was out there the one and only time in late May.  It was really overgrown and as others have mentioned the neighborhood is tough to look past.  I parked my car right on gang graffiti and that didn't sit well with me.  I will give it another chance after knowing what I know now.  (But this is my list today.)

9.  WYCO - This course is just so long that I felt like I had just gotten my junk stepped on by the time I was done.  Throwing my Viking into the pond on 14 didn't help my spirit out either.

That is all of the courses that I have played this summer.  It has been a great addition to my life and I really enjoy the community that surrounds it.  I would love to help out as we get our city ready for the Worlds next summer.  So please let me know what I can do!

Cliff Drive           95              13            7.3
Rosedale UT       91               13             7
Swope               75               13          5.77
Blue Valley         63               11           5.73

WYE's only weakness when compared to the other courses in town is the fact that it's a junior course. As far as shot versatility, aesthetics, and fun, there's no way it's not in the Top 10.

Wow, what a great thread.  It has been forever since I have been on here, especially since moving back to the states and not living in KC any longer.

1. Waterworks - One of the best courses I have played anywhere, period.
2. Swope - My old home course where I learned to throw it straight.
3. Blue Valley - Love the par 4s and 5s as it really tests most of the shots in your bag.
4. Cliff Drive - good course but no way I can put it above the first three.
5. Rosedale - good course to learn to throw a Roc...unfortunately you don't need a whole lot more than that.
6. Wyco - Tee it high and let it fly. Throw it 400'+ and straight or hyzer and you score nicely.
7. Centennial Park(Lawrence) - Not really KC but close enough and a good variety of shots here.
8. Pleasant Hill - Played it my last time back.  Again a good Roc couse
9.Down Under - A little frustrating seeing good shots end up bad and vice versa.
10. William Yates - Great pitch and putt kids course, introduced my 10 year old cousin to DG here.

3. Cliff Drive
4. Wyco
5. Swope
6. Pleasant Hill
7. Dick Parker's Mini Golf Course ;)

A top ten from a long time KCFDC member and well traveled player....

1. Waterworks (no explanation needed)
2. Wyco (come out on a mid-summer Friday league and see for yourself)
3. Swope (ancient trees, really kewl steel box clubhouse, and tossing across valleys=fun)
4. Prairie Center (well maintained, multiple CONCRETE tees on 5 holes, multiple pin locations, close to brown bag and my house, nuff said)
5. Rosedale top (central location right off I-35, great shot variation, classic course)
6. Cliff Drive (awesome mix of holes, will prolly move up my list once Jack quits messing around and pours some concrete and finalizes the layout, but even as is, a super course)
7. Blue Valley (needs carts, but the views and magnitude are amazing)
8. P Hill (a lake, albino wallabys, screaming monkeys, and a really pleasent park)
9. Shawnee Mission (needs boxes and less armed rangers)
10. WYE (never been there but based on all my friends reports, it has to be better than California Trail, and DU has just too much of the luck element for my taste)

And, like I've said before, any course I'm on is my favorite at the time and I think it's so sweet to live in a metro with soooo many great courses and so many fun dg folks. We are truly blessed.

It would be cool to see this thread come alive again with all the changes that have come in over the last year and a half.  To that end:

1 ) Cliff
2 ) Water Works
3 ) Swope
4 ) Blue Valley
5 ) WyCO
6 ) Rosedale Top
7 ) Pleasant Hill
8 ) Shawnee Mission Park
9 ) Olathe
10 ) Yates

Apologies to Legacy and the new Blue Springs course - I still need to get out there and play.

How many freakin' courses do we have here now, anyway?  And how many are in the works?

It was a reference to my and Tom's friendly razzing when it comes to the league attendance numbers of Cliff and PC, Cooper. I have played PC before and I think it's a great course. But you're right-- it's not in my Top 10 for the exact reasons you mentioned. 8)

So a bunch of new courses have been added since this was last looked at, and with Bird Father bringing up some issues of why this course over that course, instead of hijacking the MAC event, I thought I would resurrect the dead thread.

Personally, as the TD of the Wide Open it isn't about not using courses, it is about using courses that make sense.  The Olathe Lake course wasn't even on the radar when planning went in for the Wide Open so why would I consider using something that wasn't there?

Using Olathe doesn't make sense from a logistics standpoint when it comes to the Wide Open with the exception of using it in conjunction with SMP or WyCo.  Then though you are looking at driving distances that really detract from the venue.  I heard that as well as other concerns with Blue Springs last year.  So I made a decision to keep all the courses centrally located.

Does it suck for the hard working locals that do work on courses that aren't being used.  Sure it does.  Look at Cliff for example, it is looking pretty good, but won't get played.  Played Rosedale last night, and I hope it gets more work to clean it up as it looks pretty shaggy right now.

Personally when I travel to another location to play in a big tournament, I don't want to drive to the farthest ends of the city to play.  I want to play, not drive.  I drove to get there.  I take that approach in my decision as to why I chose the courses to play on.  Initially Cliff was targeted, but the prospect of losing holes during the event or beforehand, allowed Rosedale to come into the scenario.

I can't attest as to why people choose locations, but personally I chose for the Wide Open courses that I feel are the easiest to get to, require the least amount of travel, and present a good challenge for the players.

I am not running the Wide Open next year, so if you want a different course selection I suggest you work with the BoD at either helping with the team or step up and make it happen.  It takes an entire community to make the courses great in town for this event.  Also you need to have all the courses looking good as every course that is closed is going to send our local players to another course that will then give them a chance to see that course I heard about but never played before......

So your work though may not be where you want everyone to see it today, but give it time, and people will get out there, and enough clamoring will happen to make the course more populated.

All I can say, is that I wish we had that problem here in Wichita.  :'(

There are some good courses around here, once you figure out  that amost EVERY little town around Wichita has one.  Albeit, you may have to drive a minute to get to some of them, but, I just relate it to driving across town in KC.  8)

1 Waterworks
2 Perry
3 Woodhenge
4 Big Blue Valley
5 Wilbur Youngle
  Cliff Dr
  PC

And a tie for most fun: Rosedale and Swope.

Olathe Lake will be top 5 in a couple years.

For future consideration....

I understand the idea of wanting to keep the courses relatively close.
Also understand people's desire to showcase their local course and the work they do on it.

I also understand how some municipalities may or may not want to host large tournaments on their park properties and the politics that could get involved.

I also have heard rumblings that some touring pros don't like it when an established tournament keeps changing the courses year after year.  They want continuity.

I think what makes KC unique is the quantity and quality of the courses.  We don't have to be like the others always using the same 1 or 2 courses every year (Memorial, Steady Ed, etc.)

Maybe just a consideration....

Have one KCWO primarly East courses.  Young, Legacy, etc.

Next KCWO have primarily SW courses, PC, SMP, Olathe Lake.

Next KCWO have primarily north central courses, WW, WyCo, etc.

Far north courses,

etc.

Just a thought.

Top 5:

1.  Water Works
2.  Blue Valley
3.  Cliff
4.  Woodhenge
5.  Wyco

Honorable mention (way more interesting conversation IMO)

-Swope
-Lakeside Hills (Lake Olathe) (Birdland)
-Legacy
-Pleasant Hill
-Blackthorn
-SMP (it's always peaceful, well kept, family friendly...my young one's love this course)

Most over-rated courses in KC:

lol, I wouldn't touch this subject with a 10 ft pole.  But, you know I'm looking at you...course that I think is WAY over-rated.

Pickard is a pretty good drive away from the other courses. So is fountain hills. Blue ribbon pines is well over an hour away from the nearest course. So long drives shouldn't stop anyone or affect tournament course selection. However, most NTs are one location tournaments: hambrick, beaver state, Great Lakes, masters cup, vibram and USDGC. Texas states used two courses in one location and one in another but relatively the same area. So the wide open has some room to maneuver when it comes to how it wants to shape itself. The pros are fifty fifty about more courses or not, I think most pros just want the best courses. Now, which TWO courses are the most competitive for PROs only? If the top players came into town do you think every course here would challenge them? I know that blue ribbon has to be modified to make it harder. So does milo, fountain hills, hambrick and Winthrop. The real issue is what do we have to offer that would make the wide open interesting to Pros?

Just putting that out there to see what everyone thinks.

1. Water works. Not that DGCourse Review is official, but this course is consistently top 20 year after year. Also, my home course. So...
2. Blackthorn.  Seriously, it has a cemetery on its premise. Creepy, but kinda cool.
3. Swope.
4. Cliff Drive. With the terrain changes and woods early on, to the open air and (sometimes) huge gusts of wind that come outta the blue. Great city view as well
5. Down under
6. Woodhenge. The more I play this course, the more I love it.
7. Old pike. I just need to convince myself to join this club. Tuesday nights, random draw doubles, will have to suffice for now.
8. Wyco.
9. Prairie Center. I really dislike the new hole 13, but it's a challenge, and I can't let 1 hole blow an entire course. Oh, and the pond owns 2 of my discs. I suppose that's why PC isn't my #8.
10. Up top. The only reason it's this low is cuz of the infrequent mow schedule and how busy it gets on the weekend. Nobody's fault on the popularity, just sayin.

Haven't played Blue Valley, Birdland or PHill, but I've heard good things. Maybe next time.

I had toyed with the idea of Blue Valley and Swope Gold this year Loomis, Swope Gold Friday and Sunday only for the NT, but was met with concerns about not using WW and people irritated.

I like the thought of taking the top courses and giving them a toughening approach, though I loathe the notion year after year of "recreating" courses.  Would prefer to have course in play that makes it tough.

I hate going to Indianola but I have driven the event over and over.  Infact I go up for Dubs 69 up there.  So I will travel if it makes sense, and you give me time.  Though realistically, Pickard and Ewing are only 20 minutes apart, so that aligns with what I was saying about distances making sense.  Olathe/WyCo make sense, WyCo/Young doesn't.

Agree fully.  For this being the very initial season of play at Lakeside I feel it is in stellar condition.  It's honestly playing a little better than I expected this early in it's existence.  Olathe P&R is keeping it mowed real nice and the little tweaks that have been taking place over the last month or so have only made it better.  Now, if only we could get that freakin' practice basket back in it's rightful spot!!  Thieves are dumb >:(

I think we need  to have 2 seperate polls. This one is worded "Top Ten FAVORITE Courses".  We  need another topic Your TOP TEN Most Challenging Courses.  I remember when we had 2 courses to choose from. Gas was 60 cents a gallon back then sonny! I'm sure I will get corrected on the price of gas in the late 80's early 90's.
