Title: New Players 2012
Post by: BenC on March 27, 2012, 08:16:46 AM
What a great night at Rosedale for the last unofficial round of new players league.  Yes, next week, April 2, it is for real.  Some of the scores were ridiculous but that just shows a lot of improvement has been made over the mild winter by people.  The 80% handicap based on last year didn't hurt either.

Adam Abernathy 36
Dale Walters       45
Andrew Walters  47
Chris Timko         54
Ben Crosby         56
Chris Millsap        57
Michael Taylor      59
Bobby Dietzel      65

We are going to have a great year with sponsorships from KCFDC, Dynamic Discs & Disc Golf World.  What does that mean?  Come out and see for yourself.

Expect the first mini clinic in May.  They may start out with top local players but I do have a commitment from a national tour player to stop in for a night.

Monday, 6pm?
No entry fee?
What is a New Player?  My Kan-U-Wyco rating would have been a 836.

New player league is simply a league for new/newer players to play with more experienced players.  This way, whether through active "coaching" or just watching the more experienced players, the newer player can get tips on throwing, rules, and play in general.  As Ben mentioned, he tries to get local pros to give clinics a few times during the season (usually meet at Swope for the clinics).  As of right now, we are starting at 5:30 so we can fininsh before dark.  Hope to see you there.

Yes, tags are in play and enough people with tags to make it worth while.

What a fantastic night at Rosedale Park last night for the official start of New Players League. 13 of the 21 people that started the round a little after 5:30 were first time players to the league.  Only two of those twenty-one left early for different reasons.  There was an ace on hole 7, but we are a free league with no ace fund so half of zero is still zero.  Tag 2 was the low tag and Matt successfully defended it.  Chris Millsap walked away with an Elite X Stratus for CTP.

Ben, were these scores figured with handicaps? I know I shot 57 for +3 but nice to be listed over Brandon and Dave even if by mistake! :)

Post by: BenC on April 04, 2012, 02:09:07 PM
Rich, I don't make mistakes.  I just figured you are such a decent guy I would take 7 strokes off your score, but now that you question me I am only going to take 2 off next week.

Yes, they are handicapped scores.  That is what I will be posting this year.

New Players and Women's Leagues on Monday night at Rosedale Park, will have a Dynamic Discs clinic starting at 5:30pm and will feature two of their Tour players Catrina Allen and Paul Ulibarri. They will put on a clinic for the players and whoever else would like to attend. Thanks and we hope to see you all there!

This is an unscheduled clinic.  I did not have time to get information out to all the courses and stores in town but I am not going to say no when an opportunity like this comes up.  If you had planned on getting out tonight great.  Things will be a little different tonight because getting some advice from this caliber of players will raise your game more than playing a round and trying to figure it out on your own.  Like always we may have time to get out on the course and put into practice what has been passed on.  If you live on the East side of town, and don't usually come out, take the little extra time to get to Rosedale so you don't miss this.

A great big THANK YOU to all the players that showed up last night at our Dynamic Discs Clinic. There was over 50 people for this event. And a Thank You to Paul Ulibarri, Catrina Allen and Ken Franks for sharing their tips and technics with the people that showed up. The first question from the crowd was about the mental game and they all touched on that. Very interesting to hear the pros talk about what they go through. Then putting demos, and then Catrina starting throwing some 350' and longer drives. Catrina then worked with the girls for about an hour on their driving and putting. Paul and Tank threw some bombs also then worked personally with whoever had questions. All three pros said that was one of the biggest turnouts of players for a clinic that they had been a part of. Great time last night I hope everyone got something out of it.

The New Players and Women's League on Monday Night 4/16 at 5:30pm will feature Dynamic Discs Team Members Phil Arthur World Masters Champion, Paige Pierce Current Worlds Women's Champion and Paul McBeth from California. There could be a few others show up also. There will be a Question and Answer and then a distance demo by the top players in the world. This should give you time to play after the demo. I hope to see you all out there on Monday evening!

Rosedale will be the place to be tonight.

There will be a few others showing up.  Added to the already stacked list will be Devan Owens and Ricky Wysoki.

I will be bringing cards for those people that want to get on the course.

What a fantastic night at Rosedale.  60 people were in attendance for this weeks version of New Players Night.  Phil Arthur, Paige Pierce, Paul McBeth, Paul Ulibarri, Devan Owens, Ricky Wysoki, Jeremy Koling, Catrina Allen, and Brittany Blair were there to answer questions and throw some signed disc.  After the clinic was over people either stayed and got some one on one time with the pros or created a card and went out to play a few holes.  Some of the ladies even got to throw a few holes with Paige, Catrina and Brittany.

The signed discs (blizzard plastic, Nukes, and others) that were thrown at the demonstration are for sale.  If anyone is interested in on or two you can give me a call, 785-393-1555, I will let you know where you can get those.

At this time there is talk of another BIG name coming in next week but until that is finalized the plan is to make cards and play a round of golf.

Also spotted on the course were Sarah Hokum, (PDGA Board President and commissioner) Rebecca Duffy, and (PDGA Executive Director) Brian Graham.

Tonight will be a regular New Player Night.  With groups of four starting at 6:00.  We should have plenty of time to finish a round before dark.  Lets see how those mini clinics have helped your game.

We had 27 people tee off last night and 25 of them finished the round.  We did not try to mix the courses because of the rain, but if it dries out we will do it next week.  One card came in after dark and the ladies played hole 18 in the dark to finish their round.  The only thing that could top those numbers last night was having Bob Ward playing in one of the groups.  He didn’t finish the round but was leading his card after 12 holes when he needed to be done.  It's good to see Bob out again so soon.  Zeke Henry walked off with the CTP, a Pro Vulcan.

We had the biggest non clinic night of league that I can remember.  A group decision to try singles on the Wide Open settings had 32 people start a round.  Twenty seven of those turned in a score.  The last person to throw, John Davis, won the shaggy dog CTP hitting the chains from the skate park to the practice basket with only the lights from the tennis court showing a hint of the basket.  Next week we will be mixing the courses heading down under for most of the round.

New Players League continues to grow.  Thirty-six people turned in scores last night.  The courses were mixed with everybody playing 12 holes down under and then coming up top to finish their last six holes.  The courses also continued to be worked on with some people deciding not to play in league instead hauling up trash from down under and continued triming up top getting it ready for Wide Open.  Matt Ecklund turned in the low round with a 51, unhandicapped.  There were 11 other 50's, 18-60's and 6 people turned in a score 70-90.  Chris Millsap walked away with the CTP, an ESP Cyclone, thrown from 18 blue setting to the practice basket.
Wyandotte County Parks and Rec made an apperance to talk to Jim Sherwood and Pete Cashen about the new tee pad placement on one and some other things happing in the park.  It was a good thing for them to drive around and search for a place to park and see how busy we were.  Maybe they take note on just how much the course is used.
Ladies Night Out also had a strong showing with ten ladies playing all up top holes with six of them being first timers.

There was a slight drop in numbers Monday night, but we still had 26 people turn in a score.  We even had a couple people come out to get some Wide Open revenge on the course, but that didn’t happen all the pins have been moved.  Michael Quiroga took the DD CTP and Ed Holbrook walked away with a CTP disc donated by Drew Nietzel.  Rosedale will be the place to be Wednesday night as all pins are in the shortest or next position, and a large ace fund is at stake.

25 people teed it up last night and 23 of them turned in a score.  There was a tie at the top of the scores, at 53, between Brandon Deere and Zeke Henry.  Josh Keihl took home the CTP throwing a shot into the ring, on the ground, of the practice basket from the back of the tennis court.
Next week we will do the longest day of the year, even though it is a couple days early.  27 holes, using the front nine down under and the up top course.

It's a lot easier to use the back nine of DU. You play 1-5 then go down under and play 10-18 then come back up and finish 6-9. Just FYI from an old league runner.

It did seam hot last night before we started out to the course but that didn’t keep people from coming out for some great golf.  We had twenty four people turn in scores two more than our weekly average and enough to push us past last years total for rounds played.  We had three guys drive all the way in from Denver just to play with us. You all can say it was for a different reason but I’m going with New Players League is pulling people in from all over the country.  Heath Kinton and Austin Penca were tied for hot round with a 53.  Lee Killian donated two discs and ran a ring of fire awarding the plastic to winner Josh Burdick.   After a small break we did the DD CTP, Josh stepped up last and put it under the practice basket from the skate park sidewalk to take home all the free stuff last night.
It is time for a little change of scenery so on July 16   New Players will be heading to Swope for a night.

We will be at Swope.  Yes there was a little confusion last week, but it was handled and there was a league director at each park, so no one made a wasted trip.  I will keep it in mind if something ever comes up again that I shouldn't let Rhonda sign people up and make cards for new players league because she obviously didn't do it well.

Considering she was the only one there and had to make an impromptu decision, I think she did just fine. I know she got us signed up and sent out right away. I had no complaints from her. I will be at Swope tonight though!

I was starting to throw a lot better at Rosedale, maybe Swope will be the spot I throw my best round yet! I always like checking out new courses and playing with the Vets. I should be there around 530-545. I am leaving Ft Leavenworth around 445pm...
