Title: 2011 Kansas City Wide Open XXIX-countdown to 30
Post by: jack on February 11, 2011, 12:48:50 PM
All the comments in the GBO forum made me realize, we are no longer talking about the Wide Open, so lets get it started.

Here is what I do know:

June 10, 11, 12

Pro Format:
Friday June 10
2-Rds-Cliff/WW (10:00am & 3:00pm starts)

Saturday June 11
1-Rd Tee Times Blue Valley (Starting @ 10 am)

Sunday June 12
1-Rd Tee Times Swope Extended Course (Starting @ 9:30, Top Groups start @ ~11:30 in each Pro Division)

Am Format:
Friday June 10
Doubles As you Go @ Blue Valley-$20/team Prizes only-must start 10-3

Saturday June 11
2-Rds-Cliff/Rosedale/WW (9:30am & 2:30om start)

Sunday June 12
1-Rd-Cliff/Rosedale/WW (8:45am start)

Swope will be the awards ceremony/presentation following 30 minutes after all final Pro divisions completed.

More information to follow, but this will be the schedule of the playing time at this point.  If you can help spot on a course (Blue Valley-6, Cliff-4, Waterworks-4, Rosedale-5, Swope-4) that would be great.  Spotters will not only help, but will help with the water filling as well where applicable.  Spotters are to be seen by the player initially, then hide, you are not to make calls during the round, you are there to help find the disc, and keep the flow of play moving.

Again more to follow, but this will hopefully get us going!

Thanks,

Jack

Is Swope going to be in the "true" Gold layout?

I really like Timko's set up, but I've never played the original gold setup. What were the major differences?

platinum probably baby......

I liked part of TImko's design, but it will have a little more teeth and tightness to it since it will be Pro-Only, you need tobe good to be a "pro" don't you?  I mean you can't just pay cash and call yourself a pro can you?

I'll be tinkering with it on Legaues at Swope from time to time.

--Moved from the GBO 2011 thread incase you are wondering what I am talking about--
[/color]I have made lists in the past and posted, and you know what they do not get done.  So realistically I don't see the need tin posting it online when I know that it doesn't get done.

I will attempt to put together a list of said items and have it ready soon.  That being said I will start to hold meetings about the Wide Open on a regular basis after I get back from Dallas next week starting on Tuesday the 22nd.  Location TBD, but will be downtown.

Here is the list of sponsorship levels:

$50-business card Program Ad
$100-Double Card Ad
$250 would be a Player Sponsor (double ad and player entry)
$300-Tee Sign Sponsor
$500-Shirt Sponsor (limited to 4)
$1800-Course Sponsor (Limited to 5)
Other sponsorship options are available for trade of merchandise if approved, please contact me with more questions about this.

This is the rough outline.  I will work on other options as we go, and should have the sponsorship form ready to be available by the end of the month if you need an actual form.  You really don't you need a committment from the sponsor and the knowledge that we will do well with their advertisement with us.

I will work on a prep list for the courses, but the Course Coordinators will be doing that not only for the Wide Open, but for all of their courses.  Our latest meeting just initially has identified those people in charge of the courses, and they will work with a wish list for their course to make each one better.

The benefit of the Wide Open is improvement of all of our courses for us to use year round, and a chance to show off our courses to the rest of the world.  You can help by volunteering to keep up your favorite courses everyday you play it, and notify anyone on the BoD or the Course Captain when there is a need to be fixed.

I love to hear this enthusiasm.  With 13 courses underneath the KCFDC belt currently and others pending, its easy to get distracted, and it takes an army.  Build your own army and ask how to help, or clean up what you can when you can, it all adds up!

I have some additional ideas of holes we can combine/extend as well as some new holes that I'll see if Jack likes as well.  I was really limited last year in what I could implement in terms of new holes on the course by my working schedule, and expect to be a little more free this June.

So Ams will only be playing 3 rounds for the whole tournament? Minus the optional doubles round on Friday? I'm curious as to what the reasoning is behind this?

From what I've seen/learned over my brief time in the sport, the Am's always play just 3 rounds to the 4 that the Pro's play.  I'm going to The Memorial, and I'm only playing three rounds there, and watch the Pro's on the 4th day, for example.

I thought you were a pro after you've accepted cash. At least that's how I've always thought about it.

I would look at the qualifications for a Touring Pro to answer how you become a "real pro".

I believe it was something like

1000+ rating
Cashed over $XXXX.XX
Placed top blah in a A tier event
and so on.

But I'll call my self a PRO all day long as long as no one watches me play

So Ams will only be playing 3 rounds for the whole tournament? Minus the optional doubles round on Friday? I'm curious as to what the reasoning is behind this?

Its tough to have all the courses fully staffed on a Friday Anthony is another option that is hard pressed.  And many of the Am's have "real jobs" not like the pro's don't as well, but the majority of the Am's can travel in on Friday and get to play the courses here.  Also it gives them a chance to watch the pro's on Friday if they like as well.

Really its a hard sell no matter what you do on this event in some respects.  I have made it so that the pro's do get a later start on Sunday so that as the Am's finish up on their round, they can get over to Swope to see the final groups tee off and have a fun time.  I am hopeful that the event is truly a huge deal on Sunday for the finals, and as such may make the "festivities/party/contests" happen on that Sunday, yet still have other options available all week for a likst of "programmed" outings that would be encouraged to participate in if you are of that mind set.

More to follow though, but it is quite simply a matter of volunteerism in some respects, and ease of event planning in others to go with it at this level.

Cool, it makes sense. I just wasn't used to seeing Ams just play 3 rounds but I guess it is somewhat normal. I like the oppurtunity to go watch the pros anyway.
Title: Re: 2011 Kansas City Wide Open XXIX-countdown to 30

It makes sense to only have 3 AM Rounds. But every pdga event I played last year as an AM had 4 rounds.  I would still prefer four rounds, but if it's not possible then I guess it's not possible.  The more rounds you have the less pressure on each round.  That and if it's the same cost I would prefer to get to play the same amount of holes, otherwise I would recommend a reduced price in light of a 25% reduction in play.
Title: Re: 2011 Kansas City Wide Open XXIX-countdown to 30

THis year's Wide Open will be Trophy only, and we anticipate it being cost friendly.

Not all events are always 4-rounds, I guess you got lucky, or only chose to play events that only offered that.

Yes many do, but we want to give all players a chance to watch the top players in our sport compete for their win, and see that competition.  By playing 4 rounds, on Sunday, you do not have that chance, you miss the excitement, and the chance to watch some great play, I always disliked that.

I loved playing 4 rounds, so I understand that, but I hated staying at a park until 7 or 8 for the final 9 that started late, then the awards, then the payout.  So based on my last decade of play in events, I feel this is about the best compromise to make that happen.

You still get 3 rounds of great golf, you have a chance to play with your fellow disc golfers, you play for the chance to be crowned a winner, and you will get to see the top people in our game play at a high level.  I feel that this option offers the best for everyone to enjoy the entire weekend.  Now if you want you can also watch them play on Friday as they get their feet underneath them for the placing of the field.

It will be a great weekend rest assured!

Just throwing this idea out there for some fundraising. I was looking at the Gentleman's club challenge and saw that they do a fundraiser auction to add money to the payouts. One thing that they auctioned off which I thought was really cool, was a round with a pro. So say the tournament starts on Friday, lots of the pros show up a few days before. So if you could get them to donate one round for the auction, us am guys could bid on it and winning bidder gets a private round/lesson from which ever pro they bid on.
They also had lots of donated items for bid, which is cool too. But I know I would be interested in trying to win a round with Doss, or Locastro, or guys like that.
I don't know any of those guys, but I know some of you do. It seems like it would be worth looking into at least. Here is the link for there auction page results. http://www.lvbagtag.com/Events/11GCC/gccxii.htm (http://www.lvbagtag.com/Events/11GCC/gccxii.htm)

Doing a play-with-a-pro auction sounds like a great idea!  I know that as an AM I would love to play a round with one of the touring pro's.  For those that know these players as friends it may not sound like a big deal, but to us "regular folk" that'd be a blast!  How many other sports can you play a round with the "Tiger Woods" of the sport without paying thousands of dollars?  I'd def. put down at least 50 bucks to play a round with Feldberg, Jenkins, Doss, etc.  Its a win-win for everyone... the pros get more money in the payouts and the ams get the experience of a lifetime!

Well if Am if 50 bucks and pro is an additional 50 you can pay a hundred and have a chance to play with all of them. :)

True. But I doubt they'll b wanting to give me tips and advice on my throws while they are trying to win a tournament. Plus its a way for them to check out the courses before a tournament. Possibly with local guys that can show them some different routes.

Its on my list that you do not see.  I talked with Massage Heights about this, but I would prefer to keep it in the family, so I am in favor of this by all means.  I would ask that they do a tee sign sponsor or 1/2 tee sign sponsor at the very least.  Then I would be ok with it more than likely.

I havent contracted it out yet so, I am still open.

Really?  I assumed that only the Pro players had to take the officials test to play since the Am event will be an A-tier.

If you look at the Brent Hambrick Pro registration list, there is a column for passed test:
http://www.pdga.com/tournament_results/61924 (http://www.pdga.com/tournament_results/61924)

But not for the corresponding am event:
http://www.pdga.com/tournament_results/64923 (http://www.pdga.com/tournament_results/64923)

It's still good for everyone to be an official and to know the rules, but I'm not sure it's required for Ams.

Full Color version of the sponsorship options.

We will haev live coverage of the event for sure on Sat & Sun, looking at Friday as well, but I am uncertain at this point if that will happen, its a lot of work for 4 courses in 3 days with the single crew.

If you have any questions at all about the sponsorship levels, please let me know.

Right now I am hopeful that we will have quite a good players pack going on with the Am side, but I need help raising Tee Sign sponsors.  I would ideally like to have a total of 72 tee signs, one for each course each hole, but I realize that is probably tough to get, but with over 400 club members, and close to 1000 people in the chat room here, asking for one tee sign from every 12 members seems possible doesn't it?  Find out how you can help out.  This is a great deal of pride on the line for the event folks.  We haven't hosted a big event in a few years, and this is our return as a city to the sport.

Please let me know what I can do to help you get the information needed to the people that want to gain exposure for their business.  Now with the added LIVE VIDEO coverage, and then it will be archived for later viewing, you have a great chance to warrant getting more exposure for the money that you giving to the sport.  IN all honesty, it breaks down at the tee sign level to less than $.50/person to get that exposure duiring the event, and the internet will only make that drop lower.  What a great Return On Investment this is.

Help out.

Post by: jack on April 27, 2011, 02:27:40 PM
Greetings from Kansas City!

As we head out of the winter months and into spring, the 29th Wide Open is fast approaching.  This year, the Kansas City Flying Disc Club, in conjunction with many sponsors, is happy to host an elite National Tour Event.  The event will play on the same courses that many of you may have played in the 2009 Worlds tournament.  The event is going to be a combined Pro/Am event, with the Pro side of the field playing 4 rounds on courses over three days. Those opting for the Amateur side of the event will experience 3 rounds over 2 days.

The Pros will start out on Friday with rounds at Water Works park. The course features challenging elevation and picturesque views of the Missouri and Kaw Rivers and the downtown skyline, and demands attention at every curve for one round.  The other course on Friday will be just across the river at Cliff Drive, with a combination of wooded technical shots and some open air distance to challenge all aspects of your talent level.

Moving on to Saturday, where tee-times will play in for the remainder of the weekend, you will be playing at the Blue Valley course that has made friends and foes in its short time.  At over 11,000’ of continually changing elevation and fast greens, this demanding course has challenged players for the last decade to test their own ability and prove their mettle.

The final round will be played on Sunday at Swope Park, and you might think that Kansas City's oldest course is a safe bet for an easy finish.  Well...don’t be fooled: this course will be expanded into a longer format using alternate tee pads and mind-tingling OB. The tournament layout puts this course into the modern age while preserving the enjoyment, comforts and tranquility that this course has now offered for over three decades. A great day of fun and festivities will follow. We hope to draw nearly 1,000 people to watch the final rounds, as the top touring Pros visit Kansas City yet again.  The Pro Field will be limited to 144 players.

The Amateur side of the event will be playing on Saturday and Sunday, and will play on the same courses that the Pro field played on Friday. Water Works and Cliff Drive will be in the mix, along with historic Rosedale Park.  With this park, placement is essential, as there bluffs and drop-offs that make errant shots on 13 of the 18 holes a strong possibility of climbing up some big hills.  The Ams will be utilizing a shot gun start all weekend long, and will be teeing off earlier on Sunday to give them all a chance to make it out to Swope to catch quite a few of the rounds of the top in the game.  This event will also mark the first time that the event is a Trophy-only event for the Amateur side, and the player's packs will be stocked with items that will make everyone glad that they came to the event, along with providing a challenge of competition on the highest level between multiple divisions.  The Am Field is limited to 216, so please ensure that you sign up and don’t miss this opportunity.

The event is going to be yet again a fine showing of some of the best disc golf courses in the country.  Although there are many disc golf courses that are great across the land, we feel very fortunate that many historic events and moments have came from events in Kansas City.  With one of the most central locations to get to across the country, we are confident that this event will be yet another fine example of great players playing a great game.   The courses will be prepared and the cameras will be on, as www.discgolfplanet.tv will be showing the event as well. The play will be fierce with competition, yet good times will still be possible with the hospitality that many have came to associate with Kansas City through their own history of events in our town.  Be a part of the myth and lore that Kansas City has: come join us for the 29th annual Kansas City Wide Open, and create your own fond memories, or get rid of some old nightmares by extracting revenge on that course again.

Question: What are the trophies like for Am1? I'm all for trophy divisions in Am but am a little bit shocked to be paying $50 for one. Can someone illuminate why this is so expensive and only for trophies?

In this case, you're actually paying $50 for the bigger-than-usual player's pack.
Title: Re: 2011 Kansas City Wide Open XXIX-countdown to 30
Post by: jack on April 29, 2011, 09:34:50 AM
Most A-Tiers are $60-$70....this is only $50.  As it stands now, you are probably getting 2-3 discs, and a shirt, a towel, a glass, a koozie....more items to follow.....ctp probbably on every card on one hole sponsored by a MFG with a first run never released disc......$50 is dirt cheap in all honesty for the event, and far below guidelines.  I have been taking some heat for the low entry by quite a few people....and realistically, I probably shuold have made it $60......The Memorial also an NT and trophy only event was $75 entry.(http://www.pdgasignup.com/Qstore/Qstore.cgi?CMD=011&PROD=1291105636 )...I suspect that next year the Wide Open will probably mirror that price point, but I don't know.  It depends on the fund raising that goes on in order to make it happen for the event.

Work on getting more sponsors to support the event (TEE SIGNS!) and you can bet that it will get even better!

I understand that it is cheap, that is the main reason I am choosing to play Am1 instead of Open because it is way cheaper. I guess the main thing I would think is that if I am going to be playing a trophy only event I would expect it to be in the $25-$30 range instead of slightly cheaper than a normal event. I have no problem with it, especially if the players' pack is all it is cracked up to be, I was really just wanting some clarification on that point.
Title: Re: 2011 Kansas City Wide Open XXIX-countdown to 30
Post by: phisherman_77 on April 29, 2011, 10:04:38 AM
Dude, you're just cheap.  Seriously.

Look at the Memorial entry fee.  Trophy only with a huge player's pack.

Trophy Only for an NT/A-Tier event doesn't mean a cheaper event.  It just means more perks, such as discs, shirts, etc.

No worries, its a new deal for the Wide Open, and one that many other BIG events are starting to do.  Masters Cup is going to go this way as well.... I think that most of the BIG events that you know of for the most part will start to lean this direction.

The irony is that KC has always historically been a "low payout perception" because we followed the PDGA guidelines and gave out more in the players pack than in the payout at the end of the event.  This allows in my mind for all the players that the sponsors really are targetting (Am's and up and comers) to get their product in their hands and get people playing with their items, and get their name out there with the players.  THere are more ams than Pro's in our sport, and it only makes sense in my eyes to get the sponsors items in the hands of all, not just a few that played better.....

Trophies should be pretty cool on the Am side of it, but WINNING the Wide Open should be pretty cool in itself.

Well, I'm going off of memory here, but......There was an umbrella (with The Memorial & Spinners logo), a Nuke monogrammed rock glass, tons of coupons, a Memorial mini (maybe a couple more), bottle opener, key chain, and I believe a couple (maybe three, don't remember right off) discs.  This is said from "memory", so, I may be missing one or two things.  8)

For reference get the pdf at http://www.pdga.com/documents/pdga-tour-standards

A-tier (Super Tour) events are recommended entry of $60. So if Memorial was $75, they went way over.   Anyway, payout for A tier has to be at least 110% of entry fee.  Now, understand that payout is retail value of any stuff given away during the event, including player packs, ctps, competition prize, etc. Giving out a killer players pack at a reasonable entry fee, in this case $50, thereby spreading the "payout" throughout the Am division, should encourage more AM's to participate.  This style of entry/payout system helps grow the sport more than does supporting the top 40-45% of a field.

Tracy,

Two things:
First, that recommended entry fee is not based on a trophy only division. I've been in favor of those types of divisions for a long time but I believe they should be strongly discounted over the recommended entry fee.
Second, I think the best way to get more AMs to participate is to make the event more affordable. Granted, the reason I am playing AM in this event is because it is MUCH more affordable than Open but, that being said, I would expect it to be even better savings since it is trophy only.

That is an entirely different issue. I have no problem paying the dues because we have a governing body that needs to have some form of funding and it is a relatively low amount. I also view it as a down payment, assuming I play enough events to make it worth my while. If you don't like paying dues and won't play enough events to make it worth it then just don't become a member.

It is significantly lower than any other event along the lines of an A-Tier, would you prefer a $20 entry and no players pack then in the future?  I am open to that as well if you think that others would follow, its a lot less stress on a TD to not worry about it.

As it stands right now, this event is the CHEAPEST A-Tier out there, even from a TROPHY only perspective.  I guess what did you expect it to be, a no frills event at $20 is what I am wondering, its too late this year, but if you feel that people would play in that event and have nothing to take home from travelling all over the country, lemme know how to garner that attention in this event in the future....
 ;D :o

I'm probably playing this year, and it isn't that expensive, but if you're looking for people who would get excited about a no frills event that's trophy only and has no player packs, count me. Shoot, forget the trophy if you want to increase your margins. The Title is enough.

I am going to plan a Wide Open meeting probably next Monday or Tuesday night.  I am working on a location that makes sense since Danny's has music, but we may be able to use the back room again for the meeting.

I will keep the meeting to under an hour or so of your time.  Please be prepared for final information by tomorrow at the latest.

Your help will make this event big, your lack of help will mean that you miss a great event!

You don't wanna be that person do you?

The next Wide Open meeting will be held at Kelly's in Westport on Tuesday May 10, at 6:00 pm.

Kelly's is located at 500 Westport Road KCMO 64111, it is said that it is the oldest building in Kansas City, kind of fitting for the oldest disc golf tournament in Kansas City huh?

I do not want to be there for more than an hour for the meeting, though we may stay afterwards to chat amongst ourselves.

This meeting will be to start to lay the foundation for the staff support and help needed primarily to cover the 5 courses being used and the support that those running the courses will need.

We will of course love to talk about sponsorship as well here, and any ideas that may arise from the discussion to warrant consideration.  At this point of the meeting, we will be a month out.  Registration is starting to pick up, we are close to 50 signed up.  If you are not planning on playing, but would like to help, we will start a sign up sheet of needed assignments from this meeting.  If you can't attend but want to help, please continue to send me your PM's about this.  If you would like to be the core staff and receive awesome Karma, you should be at this event.

Looking forward to it.

The next Wide Open meeting will be held at Kelly's in Westport on Tuesday May 10, at 6:00 pm.

I believe this to be the case.  Meatloaf Tuesday's I think @ mcCoy's (your dog or Joe's don't own that place do they?)......More importantly for the meeting sake, we wil not have to worry about a band playing, which unfortunately was the case at Danny's which I apologize for, but love Danny's any way!

Question.

Signed up for Recreational the other day on the pdga site.

Then I check to see if it has posted on the registration list online and I notice there isn't a spot for Recreational.  Am I just the first one to sign up? Or does it take so many players signing up before it is officially open? Or did the PDGA screw up and Intermediate is the lowest division?

I realize it takes a while for it show that I am registered, but I cant recall not seeing a division on the list in the past.

If you had the option to sign up for it, it'll be there.  Probably just means you're the first one, or, he has a list of a few, and hasn't posted them to it.  But, in a nutshell, if the Intermediate was an option to sign up for, it'll be there.

The PDGA sends me the signups in a "batch" style.  Typically on Twice a week.  It takes 3 to have a division.  As long as there are three people there will be that division.

So who has a coupon code for the officials test??  This is a bunch of crap for AMS.....have to pay $50 for pdga membership and then another $10 for an officials test...and then have to pay another $50....for trophy only???  So I get a 5 in 90 chance to win a flipping trophy only for the small sum of $160???

Is this correct?

Test not required for ams andy.....not our fault you haven't paid your pdga dues...as for trophy only event....too bad so sad....your $42($5 to pdga $3 to ace fund) of your entry will be more than compensated for in your players pack...if you would like in the future to alter this decisio, I suggest you attend one of the many wide open planning meetings that have been announced to voice your concerns or suggestions.  We are always looking for people to help with the event in all areas...even those planning on playing can can help out leading upto and during the event....its ok we like that.. :-)

I posted it because honestly it seemed easier to deal with it all at once. That way, instead of having to explain my division choice to everyone it could be made clear that I am making a purely economical decision.

And, once again, I'm very serious about moving up to Open if anyone wants to pay the difference. You will get 65% of any money I make, including any possible ace money! Come on... any takers?

Get the tee sign, tell em you'll rep them at the event, make sure to let them know that it is being shown LIVE during the event, so they get video coverage as well as archival hits forever...... @ this point you could also offer a "discount" and say you'd be willing to sell it for $250 since you already paid that entry fee, I would only need to see $250 for the Tee sign to become active if that helps as well......it doesn't help your pocket book, and you don't get a players pack...but......if you cahs, who cares about the players pack right?

Folks,

Due to some training that I am doing at work all week long, we will have to move the meeting for the Wide Open this week.  I apologize as I thought that the training would be done by 6.  I have been told that it will last now until 7-7:30.  That is close to a 12 hour day for me, and I am not certain that I will be in the best spirits.  I would love to say lets meet at 8:00, but I don't want to alter your plans.

If you would like to meet without my presence, and get some more ideas going, please feel free to do so.

The main thing that we need at this point:

Course readiness
More Sponsors
Sunday Finals at Swope Event preparedeness (Vendors, etc.......)
Staff on Courses confirmations

Registration staff for Thursday and Friday

Thanks, I will try to read from my phone, but will not be online hardly at all until Friday of tthis week at this point.

I would not be offended to hear that you met without me, so don't worry about my feelings.

Thanks for reading.

Updated information:

Innova Champion Discs National Tour Clinic date set:

Thursday June 9th at Waterworks from 4-6pm

NT Clinic--Free to public two hour instructional opportunity with touring professionals as the clinic staff.  The NT Clinic is best when it can happen coinciding with event check-in the night before the event and at the same venue. The clinic lasts two hours and we try to maximize the time to allow for folks to get to the park after work. (We decided that since league is happening at Waterworks it made more sense to go there, with league happening, we didn't want to cancel it, so you may need to leave work early for disc golf (again  ;D ) to be there at 4, but you can show up late as well and enjoy it!)

NT Spectator Tickets--Tickets will be provided that act like a mini flyer with time, date and location of the final tee time for spectators to watch the best disc golfers in the World. Ticket doubles as a drawing chance for prizes sponsored by Innova Champion Discs including a portable target.

League will be delayed because of this by 30 minutes.  With the anticipation of a larger field on 9th, you will want to get signed up early to ensure that the field is not full.  We will be monitoring the total number of entries closely folks.

Please plan accordingly.

Rosedale is set.  #6 is more to the right than I originally intended, but after playing last night, but I think it will play just fine.

#6 where it's currently located is a better hole than one spot to the left, IMHO.

If it's all the way to the right in the woods, it's a more random sort of route to get it close. Higher scoring hole, perhaps. Better, no. I'm not really attached to any of the placements on #6, but if there's a way to take some of the left-handedness of Rosey out, you should do it, to an extent. Rosey can be set two different ways: lefty-friendly, or uber-lefty-friendly.

The one I'm thinking about is pretty much straight off the teepad and up the hill. It's probably easier for lefties, but the one to the left of that is just a silly baby hyzer for righties that I could probably get within ten feet with every disc in my bag.

The next Wide Open meeting will be held at Kelly's in Westport on Tuesday May 31, at 6:00 pm.

Kelly's is located at 500 Westport Road KCMO 64111, it is said that it is the oldest building in Kansas City, kind of fitting for the oldest disc golf tournament in Kansas City huh?

We will be aligning the teams of supporters for the events, finalizing the information needed to finish the program.  Calling out items that need to be addressed at the courses.

Assigning teams for the 3 pools that will be running the courses (2 teams needed Friday, 3 on Saturday and Sunday)

Going over the final day and how it looks to be handled from an outside perspective.

I again plan on not being there for a meeting more than an hour.  Next Tuesday I would like to have all the helpers out to this meeting as well!

fixed....thanks....

On the Wide Open front we had a productive meeting that went well even though lightly attended is the best choice of words that I will use.

We are still in need of the courses looking their best. If you can reach out to some people and help out on a course this weekend please do so.

I am also in need of more volunteers to help from a spotting standpoint, and general work to be done standpoint.

I need to have about 4-6 people helping with the Video Production from installing at the morning and taking down in the evening following the pros only at Blue Valley on Saturday and Swope on Sunday.

I am still looking for sponsors, especially those that may want to vend on Sunday in the park regarding food, drinks, etc......would like to have their information for the program as soon as you can.

Looking for individualy disc CFR sponsors, really, if you can only help by buying a disc, please visit DGW, or reach out to me and I will get you one......Help us make this event bigger than it is!  Support local!!!

I need some help on the checkn at Blue Valley on Thursday as well, if you can help out during the day at all, please let me know.

The pools are starting to look along these lines for the event-

Pool A-Men's Open
Fri-WW am & Cliff pm-Sat Blue Valley Tee Times-Sun @ Swope Tee Times
Pool B-All other Pro Divisions
Fri-Cliff am & WW pm-Sat Blue Valley Tee Times-Sun @ Swope Tee Times
Pool 1-Advanced Men
Sat-WW am & Rosedale pm-Sun Cliff
Pool 2-All other Am divisions
Sat-Rosedale am & Cliff pm-Sun WW

If the am pool totals less than 95 players we will put all players in one pool, and that would look like the following then:
AM ONLY POOL
Sat-Rosedale am & Cliff pm-Sun WW

Based on this (assuming over 100 ams), we will need the following:

Help all day Thursday at checkin at Blue Valley & Friday as well

Friday help at Cliff & WW all day

Saturday @ Blue Valley & Rosedale all day, WW in the morning, and Cliff in the afternoon

Sunday Cliff & WW in the morning, and then all hands on deck at Swope for the finals.....

If you can help please let me know.

THanks,

Jack

It will not be filmed in the afternoon. I work in the afternoon. Which is the real reason I wanted to see a change of schedule-- I was hoping to watch the top pros play Cliff, but it seems I'll have to settle for watching all of them shoot sub-48 rounds at Water Works. Yay.

Anyway, yeah, the Top Pro Advocacy card failed miserably. Next time I will use "For the children" or "It's what Jesus would do" as leverage.

Based on some responses from people in here I have extended the online registration to go through Monday. After Monday you will need to call me to discuss possibly getting into the event.

We will not be taking day of registration, but in certain cases rules can be broken if you notify me that you are planning on attending in advance so your name is on a sheet.....get the hint?

I hope that you are planning on heading to the event and hope to see you next weekend!

Thanks,

Jack

Players pack will be a shirt that was like the DGD shirt, eco friendly dri-fit Front and Back screened (all players Pro & Am), from us, (Am's only) then from Dynamic Discs you will receive a voucher to get a shirt from them of your own choice.  Gateway Putter, INnova Driver, DGA Hurricane, Etched glass from LSDiscs, and a koozie from Dynamic Discs.  Still looking for other sponsor items, and will get them as we go.

Tower Tavern is honoring all disc golfers all week by allowing the disc golfers to have Happy Hour all weekend long, you just need to say you are a disc golfer.  We can't print what those specials are, but they normally only offer it from 3-7 on Fridays.  We get it all weekend!

online that is correct, but you will get a fund-raiser disc for your $20 late fee.....before you go ballistic on the $20 late fee..........signing up for an event that has been around for 29 yrs less than a week out puts TREMENDOUS strain on the people running the event.  So, if you don't want to pay almost 50% more to play in the event....sign up early, how hard is that?

Its less % on the pro side of the event, but.......its still $20.

I already extended registration longer than I wanted to, but I also don't want to turn people away, but I also don't want to be up until 1:00 am THursday night and Friday night putting the boards together........adding late arrivals.......its an A-Tier, its an NT event, act prepared for it please is all that I ask.  You expect that from me, is it too much for me to ask that you give me the knowledge that you will be attending a few days in advance?

I don't think anyone was intending to put additional strain on the tournament staff but I know from experience that sometimes you have to wait to sign up for something until you know your plans are more definite and/or you get your financial situation in order. I think it is fair to ask that it be well publicized that there is a late addition fee just like I think it is fair to have the additional fee. But, people need to be able to know how to plan.

Its been on the flyer since day one.  Having difficulties, I understand, but the knowledge that you will be playing in the event, and then having to decide less than 4 days before the event, I don't subscribe to that line of thinking for most.

Most disc golfers are grown adults, as such I expect them to act appropriately.  It was on the flyer, its been announced already, I already caved and extended the deadline which I really don't like to do...but it is what it is.  For now the only place that will ding you for the late fee is the online signup, if you pay at DGW, you will not get hit with the fee from Rick based on conversations that I have had with him.  I feel that is a good compromise for the local golfers that may have that luxury of time to decide without penalizing them.  My award for living local so to speak is how I view it......

"The pools are starting to look along these lines for the event-

Fri-WW am & Cliff pm-Sat Blue Valley Tee Times-Sun @ Swope Tee Times

If the am pool totals less than 95 players we will put all players in one pool, and that would look like the following then:
AM ONLY POOL

As of today 6-4-11 there are 68 Pro players registered for the NT event, and 53 Am players registered for the A tier event. Does this mean all 53 Am players are playing for a total of three trophies? This is a trophy only event for the Am players as I understand. Is this correct? Please clarify.

I don't know how I start trouble on here, but it happens somehow.

I'm not sure if my harmless question was what provoked your lecture about registering early, but I didn't intend to convey a negative tone with my question. I was pleased to see that the deadline was extended to Monday, because I truly wasn't able to firm up my plans until yesterday, and I was simply asking if that deadline included online registration.

I sympathize with how annoying it probably is for people not to commit to a huge tournament way in advance. However, two things are also true: 1- sometimes, it can't be helped, and you just can't make plans as far in advance as you would like. The TD has every right to either impose a late fee or cut off registration however far in advance he chooses and everyone has to deal with it, but also, 2- You don't get to extend registration and then complain about people registering late. I'm sure that you were mostly driven out of the goodness of your heart, and you want as many people as possible to be able to participate, but you can't deny that you're also driven by a desire for higher registration because it makes your tournament look better and makes a bigger purse for the pros.

If people complain to you about not being able to register on Thursday or Friday, then too bad. They deserve to be shut out. If you had chosen to cut off registration a week in advance, then anyone (including myself) who wasn't able to register by then also would have deserved it. But don't make a show of graciously extending the deadline out of the goodness of your heart and then slam the people who take advantage of it.

On a cheerier note- I'm really looking forward to this thing! It's going to be another great showcase of KC disc golf. Also, I'm calling my shot right now: I will be winning Adv Men.

Actually 2.

And I should clarify... I don't think anyone rated in the 950s or even 960s could be defined as a bagger. The PDGA defines lowly rated pros as those players 970+. I think that should be a good enough definition.

PDGA ratings aren't all they are cracked up to be anyway.

Friday night is kinda late to be deciding pool assingments isn't it?  I mean that makes it tough for the AMs to make arrangements if need be.  Just a question.

Agreed.

If you can change human nature to get people to sign up in advanced, then this wouldn't happen.  If the shoe were reversed though and you needed to get in on Friday after driving here 4-8 hours with friends hoping to play, how disappointed would you be if you couldn't get in, only too see that the field is ~120, and that means that there was about 70 open spots?

My plan is along these lines.  We will let everyone know in the Am pool to show up at Rosedale on Saturday morning.  If there is more than one pool, then we will instruct those players to go to WW, and extend the start time accordingly.  If we have the entire field at Rosedale, its a no-brainers.  In that case Ams will play Rosedale and Cliff on Saturday, WW Sunday morning.

I as well think it is unfair, but thats the game of the PDGA event in the modern world.......SIGN UP EARLY and make it easy on the staff and players is the only items of wisdom I can bestow.

I wish it was a different story as well......

Wide Open Staff Meeting at Kelly's tonight from 6-7.  (Westport & Pennsylvania)

Wide Open Helper's Meeting at Waterworks on Thursday @ 3:30 if you can make it.

If you cannot make that meeting, but are planning on helping, that is ok.  I only ask that you visit the courses and talk with the staff accordingly.  It is looking more and more like we will be having 2 pools in the Pro-Divisions (only need 10 Pros in next 2 days), which means a couple of things on Friday.   They will be playing FAST, and will not take long to tear up WW & Cliff.  It also means that we need help at both courses on Friday, and then on Saturday all hands on deck if you can at Blue Valley, Rosedale in the morning, Cliff Drive in the afternoon. (Need over 30 Ams in next 3 days to move to 2-fields)

Thursday-
--Course Prep Teams Wanted-All Day, call Jack 913-485-5123 for more information
--Registration Check In @ Blue Valley from 12-6 (Helpers Wanted there as well)

Friday-
WaterWorks & Cliff Drive
--Arrive at Course by 8:30 if possible for morning rounds
--Arrive at courses by 12:30 if possible for afternoon Rounds
--Registration Check In @ Blue Valley from 12-6 (Helpers Wanted there as well)
--If you can help with extended times, please let us know, we have a traveling crew following the Open Field that can use extra hands

Saturday-
--Rosedale Needs Spotters Help, arrive by 8:30 please
--Blue Valley NEEDS PRO Spotters-throughout the day teeing off ~9:30, show up, we can put you to work
--Cliff Drive in the afternoon please show up by 12:30 for directions
--If you can help with extended times, please let us know, we have a traveling crew following the Open Field that can use extra hands

Sunday-
--Water Works needs helpers, we will need an earlier crew here as they tee off @ 8.  If you can arrive by 7:30 that would be ideal, if you have worked it out with the course staff on Friday, please honor your commitments.
--Swope, all support staff from other courses should be at Swope to support.  We need an array of helpers throughout the day, spotters, crowd control, band/stage area set up, video crew help, parking, shuttles…..ALL HANDS ON DECK for the Finals at Swope.  Please be in attendance by 9:30 if you plan on helping.

That’s a brief outline of what is needed.  Please contact me if you can be a part of the greatest disc golf event in Kansas City, 28 years in the making…..

Right now, its all hands on deck, everyone is working hard at the courses.

Don't feel obligated to call and ask, just get to your local course and pick up trash, if you have a weed eater, start to trim.  The baskets are all in place for the courses currently.

We want our community to shine, so please apply and supply some elbow grease if you can!

Its funny you said that...I was thinking the same thing about him and Paul McBeth.  After spending 3 days watching these guys play on different courses, I have to say, those guys were cool on and off the course.

Also props to Danny Craig who took second and especially Steve Drew who was really solid all weekend, clearly playing the best golf in our division. I had a wonderful time this weekend and truly enjoyed every card and every round. Good people and good times.

Thanks to Jack, Drew, Jay, John, Kevin, Ron, Dave, & everybody else that made the 29th KC wide open awesome.  Courses looked excellent and played smooth.

Sorry I missed the action at Swope. Disgusted with myself for not bringing home the win, but congrats to Nils on a solid 3 rounds.  Little hard to swallow having a 2-stroke lead with 4 holes to go and coming out 2 behind when it was said and done.  But hey, there is always more golf to be played.

Thanks again to Jay for the chair at cliff, Dave for the gummy bears & Diet Dew, and all the great guys I got to play with!

You talking about GG? He absolutely crushed one all the way to the far tree line... and took a 4.

It would be interested to see the Pro scores on 13? We watched the last 2-3 groups go through and I don't believe there were many 3's.... it was the great equalizer!

Thanks to all involved.  It was great getting to see some of the live action and also catch some of it on discgolfplanet.tv.

With the Worlds being a non-smoking event this year, Feldberg better bring plenty of gum.  He was puffing on the cigs pretty heavily during the final round yesterday.  :-)

Dangasaur, not sure of the "event" you are talking about...but the one I am talking about is a player who was rude to me and several other officials over minor things, all weekend long.

Overheard from a player on the lead card on hole #17
"I'm tired of playing with these kids, getting emotional hitting trees, kicking their bags....."

This from someone who apparently had one great big hissy fits EVER at the Memorial.

Those in glass houses and all that......

Ah, yeah I didn't see that one.  I was referring to Nate's short birdie put that prompted someone to sarcastically say "nice up" from the crowd.  There was an audible gasp from everyone else and Nate gave the guy the look of death.  I would have wanted to punch the guys lights out.

To put it into perspective this was after 3 very very near birdie misses by Nate on the previous holes and he was already visibly frustrated, probably the worst time to make a comment trying to get into the guy's head.

there's always those trashy people in every crowd.  on the other hand though, if these guys want their purses to continue to grow, through spectator entry and beer sales, that stuff's only gonna get worse.  they can ask phil, lebron, or a-rod.  it comes with the "job".  congratulations to nate for not letting it get to him and pulling out the win.

Totally agree with all points.  Professional athletes definitely need thick skin.  It's a shame for people to bring disc golf fandom and spectatorship down to baseball and basketball levels.

Not giving him an excuse, but I was there when that happened and the guy who said it is actually pretty good friends with Nate and Avery. Not that it is any excuse for him to say that, I wouldn't have liked hearing it if I were Nate. But I do think he was trying to joke with Nate, just a poor choice in timing. I don't think he meant it to get in his head or to be a jerk like he came off as.

I'm glad you pointed this out... I was trying to figure out how to put that diplomatically. Though I agree, the timing was poor. That is the kind of thing you can say to someone when you are playing a round for fun with them but not when they are trying to win any tournament, let along an NT.

Sad to say too that heckling doesn't just happen in the pro divisions. While I was warming up throwing from the skate park at Rosey I was yelled at by some people on 1's tee... they said something like "get out of here you bagger" or something to that effect. I had to ask the guy I was playing catch with if I had heard what I thought I did, and he confirmed it.

It would have been one thing if I'd known who said it, but I have no idea who they were...

That all being said, anyone should have the right to play any division they are qualified for, no matter what anyone thinks. And if you have an opinion about their decision you should just keep you mouth shut unless you are first, their friend, and secondly, not coming from a place of meanness or jealousy but of concern for their improvement.

Anyone I've ever called a bagger (not sure if I have), please accept my humblest apology. I will not do it again.

I'm not saying I can't handle being called a bagger... I am saying people ought to be more considerate.

And, in fairness too, it is one thing when you know who is calling you a bagger and you consider them a friend. It is another thing entirely when people you don't know are saying it with a kind of viciousness that should not be present in a game like disc golf.

Also, I didn't relate that story to evoke any sympathy. It was partially related to the story about Doss and I thought it might help the dialogue a little. It is over and done with. I just thought we were maybe going to be discussing sportsmanship and could discuss it from multiple angles and relate it to how most of us experience the game, as amateurs who ostensibly have choice about what division to enter.

for reference though, you think that all the people that call me a bagger around here like me?  i'm going to say no.  and you know what?  i don't really care.

you can wish for people to be more considerate, but I think that for maximum effect, you should probably just keep doing what you're doing.  don't let the haters get to you.  i mean, come on, there is/was no bigger bagger playing Adv in the WO than Hesting. :)

we humans are a funny breed sometimes.  my skin is pretty thick on this subject, but i never thought that people were calling me sandbagger to motivate me or out of any concern for my improvement.  if it was or still is, i wish someone would tell me, since my golf game hasn't improved much in the last year or so.

I also agree with you 100%.

You are right that you have to have thick skin about it and not let them get to you. I wasn't so much talking about what the recipient of the heckling should do though, as those doing the heckling.

And, as for what I said about a friend being able to call you a bagger... I really didn't mean it as such. I meant to say that a friend could talk to you and say something like "hey, you should move up in order to improve" instead of using the verbal jab 'bagger'.

I guess the whole point that I was driving at, and I'll leave it at this... be nicer. Treat others as you would like to be treated. And if you still don't want to, that's fine. I can't and won't try to make you. But wouldn't it just be a nicer world if people let their game do the talking?

You're a bagger, he's a bagger, i'm a bagger too.

What in the world is a low level pro to do.

Brush em off don't let em make you quit.

It wouldn't be a problem if the rest of them didn't play like .... kentucky hot brown.

If you don't know what a kentucky hot brown is, it is a traditional southern open faced meat sandwich with gravy.

But i think it sounds more like what happens after a day of drinking mint julips and eating racetrack food at 'The Derby'

Being called a bagger should only really affect you if you know you are being a bagger. In that case move up. But if you know you are in the right place then wear the title with pride because they are just jealous of your skill.

Ok, clearly I'm not communicating what I'm trying to say very well...

So, onto other things. Did anybody else hear that camera shutter as Avery missed that fairly easy putt on 16 to go back to a tie with Nate? It was pretty close to Avery and I wondered if he heard it too. It was right before he release the putt.

If Avery did hear it he did a good job not berating the photographer. That is the kind of thing that Tiger seems to do all the time.

Not ALL of them, Palmer, but I think people calling YOU a bagger is more having a good time, since you bag in intermediate ;D  I agree that people who don't know you Coop, yelling that you are a bagger, is complete Douchebaggery. If I was good enough to be a bagger someday, and some jerk I didn't know somewhat maliciously yelled that sh1t at me, I would probably have words with them, and not kind ones.  Let the haters hate, and like Palmer said, there were players with more experience and higher ratings playing in your division, not sure why you got singled out.  People need to be concerned with their OWN games, this is DISC GOLF (aka the greatest game in the world, as Fisherman Bob said)!!!

On another sidenote I was checking the amateur scores, what does 999 and DNF mean?  I saw it plastered right next to GREG LEWIS' name, right after a score of 73 at cliff? If Avery did hear it he did a good job not berating the photographer.

Yeah, and the birds tweeting and the leafs rustling.   Someone said it early here, if they want big payouts at the expense of outside sources trying to create capital by drawing big crowds, these guys are gonna have to get some thicker skin.   Someday "Jaws" is gonna take down Shooter McGavin.

What was "the champs" comment about the car alarm that went off beyond tee 2 when he was throwing his drive in front of the crowd on hole one?  "nice timing on the alarm."  I think.  I bit my tongue.  I mean come on.

There was a guy driving in a stake at the PDGA tent 2 fairways away when "the borg" stepped up for his drive.  I didn't hear if he said anything, but he did look a little peeved.   That was only 10 minutes at one tee in one tournament.  These players attitudes towards other competitors, towards the fans, towards the event coordinators, towards the surroundings is, to be honest, appalling.   I know it's not all of them, there are some stand up, good folk at the top level. But I've seen enough to form negative opinions of many of them.

I think Climo was saying that tongue-in-cheek about the car alarm. The guy pounding the stake, that was a bit ill-timed, don't ya think? He was working for one of the vendors, and he waits until the top card of the pros is teeing off to do that? I don't think Dave showed too much emotion about it, but I could certainly understand him being a bit peeved. Hell, everyone in the crowd was thinking "WTF?" while that was happening. :D

As for the bagger comments to the Ams, whoever said that can F right the F off. I seem to remember Cooper stating early on that is was mostly a financial decision on his part. Just because a guy wins Am the year before doesn't mean he is going to pay $160 or whatever it is to try and crack the top-20 and cash in the Pro division the next year. As was said, people can choose to play in the divisions in which they are qualified.

Coop, I think you're a solid disc golfer and would fit it nicely with other local Open players like Fred, Marshal, and Leo. If you feel the urge to move up for next year's event, I will sponsor you for half of your entry fee. But you gotta wear a t-shirt with my face on the front and "HaterAde" on the back.  ;D

I again thank all of you for your help and support.  We are blessed in Kanas City to have such a great grouping of courses to enjoy as our home.  As you think of the times that you have played in Kansas City, be thinking of what you can do to help the 30th.  I am currently accepting information, photo's, old archival information of the 30 years of the event.  If you have an old trophy, old program you scan, I want to make the next program for the event something that is historically significant for us to enjoy locally, nationally, and international.  We have a strong history in KC for events, and next year is already going that way.   The way we look at it, we are a few days closer now to the 30th than we were this past weekend!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your energy in disc golf.  Please come and enjoy in KC next year.  We want to show you why we are the best place in the world to play disc golf at!

Thanks,

Jack

Coop, I think you're a solid disc golfer....... If you feel the urge to move up for next year's event, I will sponsor you for half of your entry fee. But you gotta wear a t-shirt with my face on the front and "HaterAde" on the back.  ;D

I already had to give one dress code warning in the event last week....It would have to be a nice collared shirt, one with a path on the back, but not too expensive....KNEE!

I may come up with a shirt for MM to wear as well. When I saw him earlier that day, I was thinking he sure looked like a goofball in the sleeveless shirt with the 90s red lightning bolt swim trunk shorts. When we heard about the complaint later on, I nearly died of laughter.

But I was just kidding about the t-shirt idea for Cooper. The half-sponsorship offer still stands-- I figure there's no way I'll ever be playing at that level in a tourney like this, so might as well help a great local player do it!

The final round was completed, so there is not a need to replay it.  If you are referencing Discgolfplanet.tv broadcast, I am uncertain, but fairly confident that when the signal went down, they quit filming, which is too bad, it could have been as you said played back now as well......

Holy s..... you mean they just gave up. What?  All that prep and setup time and effort.  That makes no sense to not even record the event for upload later.

I witnessed them work very hard at getting it back online for quite a while before pulling the plug. I too think they should have gone ahead and recorded it though for later viewing. Perhaps they have some technical reason why they were unable to do so.

I actually kind of wish they'd ditch the live idea and try to get a higher quality recording and more holes and upload it shortly after the event. I think it'd be a lot easier to watch.

Thanks to Jack and all the people who put on the KCWO.  I did have a question about the AM players pack.  Jack, you referenced in an earlier post that the Ams would receive a voucher for a shirt from Dynamic Discs and an etched glass from LS Discs.  I don't believe either of these items were available when I checked in at Blue Valley on Friday.  Are they still floating around somewhere?  Thanks.

I'd gladly pick mine up at DGW.  Probably would be easy for the local guys.

I'm not sure what to say about the traveling players.  Were they from LSDiscs?  I am guessing that LSDiscs would help with shipping.  Seems like the right thing for them to do.

We asked for the glasses to be delivered a week early for the event and were assured they would be.  After not receiving any tracking info that week, we contacted them the monday before the event.  They said they were being made then and would ship two-day shipping to make sure they were there by thursday.  I assumed they had been since I was assured they were.  That said, we would be happy to distribute glasses to players that attended and would like them.  We travel to tourneys about every week, and if can't meet up with you there, you could contact us at lsdiscs@sbcglobal.net and we can work out shipping.  Jack, let me know what you would like to do.

He busted his ankle on his run up, kind of just stumbled over his own feet.  I didn't see anything on the tee pad that he slipped on, and there isn't much of a lip on the end, so I don't think it was the pad that caused the injury.  According to him, his doc said that he probably will have to take the rest of the summer/fall off from playing, so that sucks.  But he is in good spirits, so he'll be fine.

This was posted in YouTube.

As a TD, its tough to find volunteers.  I was told of this individual talking not so nicely to one of the hard working spotters, and offering as he put it a critique and constructive criticism of the work being given by the volunteer.  Needless to say this irritated me to the 9th degree.  If you should in the future EVER have an issue with any volunteer in a disc golf outing, please take that concern to the course director or the Tournament director.  On the day in question I was both.  I was needless to say less than flattered by his attempt to inform me of his way of dealing with certain situations.

Please do not let small children listen as there are a few words that only grown ups should use, and I apologize for my profanity.  In all honesty I was much more refrained from how I wanted to be with the person, but I still have elevated tones.

Without volunteers in our sport, we would be even further behind than my game in a full pro field.......

probably only fair to point out that good old yard sale received THREE courtesy violation warnings in as many days at an NT. the interaction with one of the greatest volunteers ever came after a "lost disc" was found exactly where the spotter said it was. anybody that looked even once for a disc in that waist high grass would understand how difficult it was to narrow it down to a 15 foot circle.

even more amusing: the ensemble he was sporting in his utube debut was a result of a formal protest by the father of two world champions. he seemed to find it demeaning to the sport with all the video out there.

sadly, some people are only in it for themselves and the money. good thing they're outnumbered.

Oy and Loonis tied as both of them did not finish (DNF), also known as quitting.  However, they were not DFLs.  There is a certain honor in being DFL. Often, a DFLer wants to quit as all hope of cashing, let alone winning has vanished (probably during the first nine holes of the first round). The "honor" comes in not quitting, playing every hole, and dutifully recording each pathetic score, suffering with each additional bogey.

Hewho's behavior towards a spotter was inexcusable. However, I think the PDGA dress code is bunk. You can wear a tee shirt made out of synthetics, but not one made of cotton. Women cannot show their shoulders. Hewho's sleeveless shirt was actually clean and not that wrinkled, but did violate the sanctity of the PDGA dress code. More damaging to the future and image of "professional" disc golf is the incessant whining and self-importance of the best men players, as was again on display during the final round of the top four men.

Vey Thach did not quit intentionally. He broke his ankle and has now had a metal plate and screws installed. He's out for the remainder of the season. He only had two or three holes to go too. Let's not call him out for not finishing. I'm sure he would have much rather completed the round no matter what his score.

As for the courtesy violation for wearing the sleeveless shirt, I think it should have been for having absolutely no sense of color coordination. Somebody get that guy some shorts that match something he owns.

Important background info for those uninformed: last year matt "humble" Hummel was 4th or 5th place going into final Rosie round am1 of kcwo. After taking an 8 or 9 (that's right I said 8 or 9 can't remember but does it matter?) on hole THREE (that's right hole THREE, the short little guy) Hummel struggled through most the remainder of the round. As turns out with 3-4 holes to play of his awful round Hummel was still going to finish 8-9th place and cash 80ish bucks in merch. He teed off on 9 LONG over the fence by the tree, unreachable for most mortals....but this was "muscular, broad shouldered" Hummel (self quote)...he parked it within 20 feet (SICK), picked his disc up before putting, and walked staight to kmont at scoring table to dnf and drive home. WITH A FEW HOLES TO PLAY IN 72 HOLE TOURNEY!!!

So you dare ask, Keizer, where was Hummel during all this? The answer is as follows: who the flock knows!!! I DO KNOW where Craig Loonis was: at home licking his wounds After losing to a guy who broke his leg...if you combine Craig Loonis with matt humble you can only get one thing: Maig Lumble. ( OR Cratt Hewis).

P.S. Fun fact: by DNF'ing last year with 4 holes to play, humble allowed equally sad Craig Loonis to slide into LAST cash!!!

Additional background on the Humble Hummel issue.....  Just before he had that killer throw on #9 that he didn't even putt ou,t a similar story unfolded on that hole. Slim Belcher attempted a thumber to the basket three separate times with an attempt at a forehand in the mix. He ended up taking an 11 on the hole. But, unlike Hummel, Slim kept playing and ended up deucing all but one of his remaining holes. He ended up, I think, in 7th for some decent cash. Why quit because of one bad hole? And I thought it was only a 6 he took on #3. But I wasn't over there when it happened.

Hummel quit playing after the kcwo last year, until he showed up and won the RAC. he then quit again until present day, although he was spotted playing a dubs round with myself and 2 other golfers about a month ago. Although that was an isolated incident. I believe he has new grueling job hours and a marriage ceremony in the works, although I would stress to him that abandoning his disc golf mistress for a human wife and a job is super weak!!!

No arguments about the whining. It's difficult to listen to. I sort of stayed away from it this year...the pros and I were at Cliff Drive on Friday...apparently before they got good and wound up.

When did PDGA disallow sleeveless shirts for women? That's absurd. As far as the whole synthetics goes....the idea (at the time, and remember, this initially went into effect in 2004) was to allow MORE shirts and apparel.  At the time, the Competition Director (who is the current PDGA BoD president) came up with the NT handbook (which has morphed into the Competition Manual). The dress code originally called for collared shirts ONLY.  After some requests from players who were wearing these new dry-fit crew neck shirts (and most of them looked pretty nice at the time), the PDGA BoD allowed these sorts of shirts as well. After a lot of sometimes contentious debate on this issue, we arrive at where we are now. Even in 2004 under the more restrictive code, women were allowed to wear sleeveless shirts, they just had to be collared (and there were plenty of women that did wear these).

Personally, I've always called for clean and neat as the standard for dress code. Disc golf is not played at country clubs (generally, I know there are exceptions sometimes for tournaments, like this year's GBO). Country clubs are the reason for golf's dress code, because that is what the club requires for dress, not the what the sport's governing body requires. Disc golf is played at public parks for the most part. I can point to one instance in 2004 where we had one player show up in a very clean and pressed tank top. (Those of you that remember Carl Kittell will remember that he often dressed in a tank top). Cal's tank top had been ironed, and looked good The aforementioned player in the utube video showed up in dirty, worn out shorts, and a collared shirt that was faded, stained, and may have had a few holes in it. Guess which player conformed uynder the dress code (for once in his life), and which one didn't? That was a travesty.
