This is currently on hold until the Spring.  But most of the guys who have played in the New Players League for the last year or so are still showing up at Rosedale on Mondays to play Glow golf.  We tee off at 6pm Snow, Ice, or whatever.

Does the new players league aleays get started right at 5:30?  I would like to play this evening, but I don't think that I will be able to make it there by 5:30.  Probably 5:40 is a bit more realistic.  Anyone know that has played in this league before?

Thanks

How about before daylight savings time?  Does the league normally get started right at 5:30, or does it typically start a little after?  Basically, just wondering if it is worth my time to head down and be a little late and run the risk of not getting to play in the league, or if I should just go play at WW and not have to rush.
Title: Re: New Players League - Monday's
Post by: phisherman_77 on May 19, 2008, 04:03:30 PM
i should've been more clear in respect to dates..

the 5-5:30 times are typically for early spring when there isn't enough daylight for a league round.

when time "sprung forward" this year, the league times all moved to 6:00.

TRANSLATION: if you wanted to play tonight, it would be fine to show up at 6:00  :)

ps-i'm not 100% sure of this, but i know that all of the other leagues are now starting at 6.

I think there's normally a good amount of people out there.  10+.  I've started going to Cliff Drive now that league is back to Mondays.  But the new player's league is a nice casual league.

CLARIFICATION:

The KC league system is split into DST season and Non-DST season.

DST season runs, well, during DST.  Leagues will start at 5 or 530  during the earliest and latest weeks of DST, because dusk still comes fairly early.  Most of the season leagues start at 6.

My understanding has been that the NPL was going to stay at 530, but I'm not certain of that.

no beginners leagues on those nights, but you could just go out and play the Waterworks league (Thursday) or the WyCo league (Friday).  There is a fee to play these leagues, but you'll still have fun with everyone there and you may even learn a few things by playing with the big arms!

Jerry, I believe that Ben is planning on starting up beginners league "unofficially" the first week of March. But then starting at 5 after daylight savings time. I'm actually kinda surprised he hasn't posted anything yet so I will shoot him a text tomorrow. Oh and welcome to the area! I have some PTO time I gotta use up before April so I will be out there every Monday in March.

New players league has been moved back to Monday nights.  I will be out at the course Monday, March 12 at 5:00pm to start things off unofficially.  I will be getting people out as fast as I have a card to start them.  Yes, the sun will be setting around 7:30 but we still have approximately 30 minutes of twilight to finish the round or, because it is unofficial, decide to call it a night.  We may even just start off with some random draw doubles.
We had some great numbers last year and I hope to build on that this year.  I have some ideas that should make this year even better than last year, but the only thing I can post right now is more mini clinics.

No, I will be at the course to get people started at 5:00 next monday.  It will be like that until next month when the days are longer.  When leagues officially start, the time will probably get moved back to 5:30 depending on daylight.  It will always be on Monday, but it will be moved to Swope when there is a mini clinic planned and there will be plenty of notice when that happens.

A great big THANK YOU to all the players that showed up last night at our Dynamic Discs Clinic. There was over 50 people for this event. And a Thank You to Paul Ulibarri, Catrina Allen and Ken Franks for sharing their tips and technics with the people that showed up. The first question from the crowd was about the mental game and they all touched on that. Very interesting to hear the pros talk about what they go through. Then putting demos, and then Catrina starting throwing some 350' and longer drives. Catrina then worked with the girls for about an hour on their driving and putting. Paul and Tank threw some bombs also then worked personally with whoever had questions. All three pros said that was one of the biggest turnouts of players for a clinic that they had been a part of. Great time last night I hope everyone got something out of it.

The New Players and Women's League on Monday Night 4/16 at 5:30pm will feature Dynamic Discs Team Members Phil Arthur World Masters Champion, Paige Pierce Current Worlds Women's Champion and Paul McBeth from California. There could be a few others show up also. There will be a Question and Answer and then a distance demo by the top players in the world. This should give you time to play after the demo. I hope to see you all out there on Monday evening!

I will be bringing cards for those people that want to get on the course.

What a fantastic night at Rosedale.  60 people were in attendance for this weeks version of New Players Night.  Phil Arthur, Paige Pierce, Paul McBeth, Paul Ulibarri, Devan Owens, Ricky Wysoki, Jeremy Koling, Catrina Allen, and Brittany Blair were there to answer questions and throw some signed disc.  After the clinic was over people either stayed and got some one on one time with the pros or created a card and went out to play a few holes.  Some of the ladies even got to throw a few holes with Paige, Catrina and Brittany.

The signed discs (blizzard plastic, Nukes, and others) that were thrown at the demonstration are for sale.  If anyone is interested in on or two you can give me a call, 785-393-1555, I will let you know where you can get those.

At this time there is talk of another BIG name coming in next week but until that is finalized the plan is to make cards and play a round of golf.

Also spotted on the course were Sarah Hokum, (PDGA Board President and commissioner) Rebecca Duffy, and (PDGA Executive Director) Brian Graham.

Normally, we meet up and play a round with 3-5 players on a card.  New player league does not cost and there is a CTP/ring of fire every week to have a chance at a new disc &/or other goodies after the round.  The last couple weeks have been a little different due to the quantity and qualtity of top professionals willing to share their knowledge.  Ben makes sure the newer players have experienced players on their card.  Everyone there is willing to share any info to help new players improve whether directly (active coaching) or just by the new player watching/copying the experienced player.  Hope to see ya out there.

Just wanted to let all the new players and women know that after talking to Ben and Rhonda and how well the clinics went last year that Dynamic Discs will be presenting more clinics for the Monday leagues. We will start these earlier this year so we wont get into your playing time unless you want to stick around for additional tips.
The first league of the season is Monday April 1 and Laron "Whoman" Harris will be at Rosedale at 5:00pm to start a weekly series of clinics and really go in depth on the strategies of disc golf and how to approach everything from your discs to the shots your about to throw.
For those new players that havent heard of Laron Whoman Harris he is a Professional Disc Golfer that played at the highest level around the Midwest and won many PDGA events. He is also a great teacher of the game and Eric McCabe credits Laron as being his Mentor growing up in the sport.
Also Innova Pro Ken "Tank" Franks will be doing a few clinics also later in the month and I will let you know when that will happen. Ken is another great teacher and his "On Tour" expierence is priceless.

Is this something that's still going on? I don't mind paying a fee and will most likelybe joining the club this weekend. I'm honestly looking to work on developing a run up this spring (currently throwing from a stand still or one-step). I typically play Shawnee Mission. I haven't played Rosedale yet. Just a question in general for a new player:

Should I join the Beginner's League at Rosedale? I've been playing casually for almost 1 year, mostly at SMP. Kan-U-Wyco was my first tournament (played Rec) after joining the PDGA. I am certainly joining KCFDC this weekend, but unsure of where to join (online, DD, or Disc World?).

I want to join the league at SMP, but since my average is +6 at best to +10 typically, I'm not confident enough to play. My schedule favors the PDGA league that I saw Rob M. getting set up. So, I could join that as well.
Am I jumping the gun, never playing league, and wanting to join in? Or should I get more experience first? Paying in and coming in dead last isnt a problem for me. I just want to improve and read that playing against better players is the fatest way to learn.
Thanks.

Welcome to a lifelong addiction.

You pay as you go for league,  meaning that you pay for one night... that is the best part.  no long term commitment like other formal leagues in softball/bowling etc.

Do not worry too much about your score and sign up for the easiest division offered.  Go and play and keep it fun and if you get smoked no big deal.  If you are waxing folks in your division, then maybe move up after a couple weeks.  If you want to improve, then you have come to the right place by playing league.  all divisions have players with knowledge  so play where you feel most comfortable.  Sometimes the best coaches are not the best players so i believe that  you will find folks that know a lot about technique in all divisions.

Marc - the term 'leagues' is a bit misleading.  It's not like a bowling league where you are commited to play the entire session.  It would be better to call our leageus 'minis' as in an one round 'mini' tournament.  You can play just once if you want.  Some leagues do run incentives to have you play more often, but it is not a requirement.  You don't need to pre-register or anything.  It is ok to just show up once, twice, every other week, once a month, whatever.

If you are planning on joining the club, personally, I would do so at one of the stores.  That's my opinion though.

I've been throwing around the idea of the next PDGA round, if we do one, is to break it up into Open, Advanced (like it currently is) and Rec where Rec would cost $2.  $1 for the PDGA, $1 for the club, and would not have a payout.  This would help new players play in more league (mini-tournament) settings without paying someone else $5 every week just to play.  Also, by having a non-payment Rec division, it would be unduly pillaged by players that should be playing in a higher division.  This is just an idea though and has not been vetted by the BoD.

Play OPEN sometime.  It is TOTALLY WORTH IT to play, watch & learn.  DG is very laid back, as are the players...so just pay/invest the $ (same $ as playing a lower division usually) and enjoy yourself while you IMPROVE!

Thanks for the advice and information, Rob.

I've already got approval on my work schedule for Tuesday and Wednesday nights open. The wife even agreed! I'm going to do both Tuesday's at SMP and the 2014 PDGA KCFDC Sanctioned Wandering Wednesday League. I'd like to pre-register as Am, if possible. Let me know what else I need to do.

PDGA# 64386

I'll be going into Dynamic Discs on Saturday to join the club and get registeted for the City of Fountains, as well as getting some bag tags. If you recommend anything else, I appreciate it.

Just two pieces of advice.

1.  Play golf, as much as you can.
2.  Ask questions when you're around better players and try to integrate their advice into your own game.

You'll be a much better player in no time.

I went down to DD today to sign up. See you out at WyCo on Wednesday.

Ok, totally new to all of disc golf just to get it out there. I have taken some steps to make me relevant such as purchasing disc, bag, and such but doesn't really matter the disc apparently they all fly about same , and noticed this "hyzer" throw I do often by mistake.but my question really is what do you suggest for the fat guys, I know I'm fat, its no secret but most advice I've seen or read is from skinny guys I've seen a couple bigger guys but to busy trying to gather my breath to chase them.im thinking of trying a newbie league but are you all fit people trying to go fast?, how many usually in a group?, I'm getting into disc golf to have fun maybe lose some weight and meet new cool people. Do any input appreciated

What's the current story on this league?  This thread is spans several years and seems to have a lot of spotted information.

If I'm correct, today (Monday Sept 8, 2014) It's at Rosedale at 6PM.  Do I just show up say "Hi, I'm here to play."?  Is there somewhere else that has more detail?

Thanks

Although I have not been to this league in particular, to answer your question, yes you would just show up and get in the league.  All of the leagues you can show up with no warning and play in.  It is not like a bowling league where you commit to so many weeks.  As long as the league is still going on you can go to one night or 5 or all.

That being said many of the leagues are winding down now.  With the fact that there is less and less light out many leagues have to move up their start time to 5:30 or even 5:15.

I know that doesn't fully answer your question but I hope it helps.

So, Mondays at Rosie (when it's not winter) is considered beginners league? I know it is for women but did not know it was for men too? I have a coworker who suggested that I bring it to the board that there be more beginners events and leagues and that she and her husband are interested in learning to play. I have invited her to Divas league but am guessing a co-ed beginners league would appeal most to her. Thanks!

For the last two years I've run a new players league at P Hill. We have men, woman and kids that play there. It has been on Thursday nights up to this point. Averaged between 10-18 people a week.

The new players league at rosie probably needs to be reworked.  But yes theoretically one has been there.

New players league in KC has been around at Rosie on Mondays for the past 15+ years.  Many a person has helped to maintain and keep it alive.  At times it may have been on a respirator, but it still continues and is a great way to get people involved.  Aaron started Thursdays a couple of years back, and it has been good as well.

The nominal $5/$6 fees at the general leagues is also a good chance to get to meet and play with people that like the sport as well as get some good tips about the sport, so even though our "leagues" aren't free, they are relatively inexpensive in the scheme of helping to improve your game and knowledge of the sport.
