Title: 16th Rosedale Amateur Championships Is October 14
Post by: Rick Rothstein on September 11, 2012, 05:13:45 PM
Hoping to field the field with 90 players. Last year, several people didn't get in because they didn't register early enough. So register early and often.

We thank this year's sponsors: The Westport Tomato Company, Innova Disc Golf, the Kansas City Flying Disc Club, and Eagle Products. We are currently in discussions with other sponsors.

You can download a registration form/flyer at kcfdc.org/docs/rac16.pdf (http://kcfdc.org/docs/rac16.pdf).

But here are the words found in the flier:

Disc Golf World, in cooperation with The West Plaza Tomato Company

Field is Limited to 90 Players. The event has sold out the last
three years. Please pre-register & GET your spot today!

The RAC is About Fun & Friendly Competition and Learning About the Rules and Nuances of Competitive Disc Golf

We encourage players who have never played in a disc golf tournament before to play this event, as well as experienced players who enjoy mentoring newer players. We will be explaining the rules and offering other suggestions to help you become a better player. Thanks to the Kansas City Flying Disc Club, there will be several pros on the course during the second round to help with your throwing technique, tournament mindset, and rules questions. Competitors will play the top course only. The first round configuration will be longer than the second.
PDGA ratings and the tournament director discretion will be used in an attempt to ensure competitive balance in the Am 1, Am 2, Am 3, and Am 4 divisions. We encourage those with PDGA ratings to play the division that befits your rating. PDGA guidelines for pros playing as ams are allowed. If unsure about what division is right for you, please contact Disc Golf World.

*Players’ Pack includes  Tournament-Stamped Innova Premium Disc and Performance shirt, a $10 DGW Voucher, an official rule book, and a mini.

Entry Fee: $35

Divisional champions, and depending on the size of the division, some runner-ups will win personalized, full-color trophy discs.
*Please note that the value of the players’  package exceeds the entry fee price. However, we are offering an optional $15 prize-pool ”entry booster” for those who want to win Disc Golf World merchandise vouchers. There will be one pool with a 100% payout to 45-50% to the prize pool field.

Is Rosedale currently set for the first round? I assume it will be by Saturday, which is when I'll first be able to practice anyway.

Thanks to Bob Ward, it is set. The second round will be shorter with 4-6 holes moved...1, 4, 8, and 18 for sure.

Just wanted to thank everyone involved in putting together this tournament.  My friend and I have played disc golf for less than a year now and we have never played in any leagues or tournaments because we just didn't have the confidence to participate in a formal setting, we rarely keep score when we are out playing, and we just don't know how we would stack up talent wise.  But this tournament provided a great opportunity to see where we fit in with other Amateurs in the area and to learn the formal rules of disc golf.  It was also great to meet so many other players in the area and begin to become integrated into the community.  My buddy Chris placed 5th and I took 7th in Am 3 so that was also a plus to the experience.  Also having gotten a great dose of Rosedale we will be back to play it more.  We had only played 2 rounds out there between us prior to the tournament.  Now that I have tournament #1 under my belt I look forward to seeing you all out there in the future!

Wanted to thank Rick for everything he does in Kansas City, especially running this event. I have a great time in all KCFDC Events but this one is a great example to newer players of why they should get involved.

Also thanks to CD, Fred, Cooper, and Dick for 'helping' us out :P

Lee, Ryan and Eric don't feel bag about playing Am 1, the guy winning Am 3 took all your bags home with him.

that happens at every rosedale amateur championship.  kind of goes with the territory when it comes to newer players measuring their skill relative to others.

It is the main idea behind this tournament. I was happy to give pointers to the junior player on my card first round. Tyler is ready to move up and he was very humble about it too. Nice tournament again, Rick.

As always, Rick, thanks for running the event!

Thanks to the 88 players who participated in the 16th Annual Rosedale Amateur Championships. I was very proud of the effort expended by almost everybody, especially during the first round when the winds were steady from 12 to 24 mph, with at least four of five gusts that pushed 35 mph. For the many first timers, nearly half of the field, it was definitely a baptism of wind. As the scores show, even experience players found the wind to be troubling.

Other thank yous go the Bob Ward for getting the course set before the tournament and then moving it shorter for the second round. Thanks also to John "JP3" Park for helping with the scorecards. In addition,  thanks to the many people who helped in other ways such as checking scorecards, helping to get us going in the morning, and closing things down in the afternoon. Thanks to Fred Smith, CD Steiner, Dick Parker, and Cooper Arnold for coming out during the second round to offer advice, which I was glad to hear helped some of our players. And finally, a big shout-out to our sponsors, Duffy Carduff of Eagle Products, Peter Engelman of the West Plaza Tomato Company, the Kansas City Flying Disc Club, and Innova Disc Golf. Your help enhanced the tournament experience for all.

It took four extra holes before Steve Thimmesch became the Am 1 race was decided. After the 36 holes of the tourney, Steve and Lee Killian were tied at 104. After the first round, Steve, buoyed by the only ace of the day on number 3 (short right) led by two over Lee and Jeff Campbell. Lee's was the medalist in the second round with a 47. Jeff ended up third, three down.

Brandon Deerr took the first round lead in Am 2 with a 62, one better than eventual champion Ben Patterson. Ben, the Am 3 champion at the 2011 RAC, shot 55 during the second round to edge Joe Pavlecich and Brandon by one throw.

In the huge Am 3 division of 33 players, 18-year-old Tyler Mattoon, playing in his first tournament, shot both rounds under 60 (59-53)  to win decisively by six throws over Andy Portwood. Four throws further down was Corey Owens, who edged Jed Baughman and Chris Blevins by one and two throws, respectively. All these men won trophies.

Jason Hern was eight throws better than Joe Teater in the Am 4 division. RAC veteran Bob Slonka got hot during the second round, shooting 51, to erase a two throw deficit to win by two over defending champion Eric Garberg. In the battle of the grand masters (old guys), Bob Ward, brokered his "volunteer karma" to win convincingly by six over Dennis Smith.

In the Junior division for boys under 16, Caleb Bell fashioned an impressive 18-throw win over twin brother, Cameron, and three other players. This was the largest junior field ever in RAC history. In the ring of fire prize giveaway, Eddie Colbert won the Innova DISCatcher Sport Model. Besides winning his division, Steve Thimmesch also took home $132 for his ace.

On a somber note, best wishes go out to Bill Hecht for a speedy recovery. Bill was feeling slightly ill and very weak during the first round, causing him to withdraw. He eventually visited his doctor, and found out he had suffered a mild heart attack.

The full scores are below. Look for RAC 17 in the fall of 2013.
