Title: Lakeside Hills is OPEN!
Post by: Tom on February 20, 2013, 11:38:30 AM
On Tuesday, February 19, 2013, the Lakeside Hills Disc Golf Course became complete with the installation of the baskets.

The course is still rough and in it's infancy, but it is playable. We hope to have concrete tees in by the first of Summer.

Although I have acknowledged the folks that made this dream become reality before, with the opening I want to give another shout out....

Brian Taylor-Not only is Brian a long range bomber and skilled player on the course, he is also a superhuman workhorse, who without being along on this endeavor, I would be weeks or months away from where we are today. He has been there at all stages and when there was work to be done, he attacked it. He practically single-handedly mowed several of the rougher fairways out with handtools so that when we did get baskets planted, we could begin play. If you see him on the course shake his hand and thank him.

Andy Lewis- My sounding board and consultant, he has been along the entire journey providing help wherever I needed.
Brush mowing, chain sawing, sleeve sticking, basket assembly, and most importantly, helping me keep it in perspective, Andy was a big help.

Mark Albers and Brian Corneilius-These two guys were a monster wrecking crew during the clearing stage, and then during concrete mixing, they were so fast the rest of us couldn't keep up. These guys were there whenever I asked for help, and
most excellent help they have been.

Deano-He has been with me since the beginning of the project, providing ideas and vision, and keeping what amounts to hard work, fun. His golf cart was a great asset during re-con and design, and during workdays shuttling folks here and there. Let's wish him a Happy Birthday at Birdland!

Cindy-With all we have going on in our non-disc golf lives the timing of the City's request for a design and install couldn't have come at a worse time for Cindy and I. Cindy took on lots of extra work and tasks to allow me the luxury and time to put in the volunteer time it took to make this happen. If you see her, give her a hug and a thanks.

Mr. Gus-He's just a good little buddy that loves going to the park with all of us, and keeps me grounded.

Mike Davis, Leevarn Sarvis, Dick Parker, and Dan Howard all put in some time as well. The City of Olathe Parks and Recreation Department effort led by Paul Hecker and Johnny Brokus made this all go so smooth.

The map below is the preliminary layout I submitted for approval. On later walk throughs and staking, we tweaked it slightly, but this map will get you around until we get a final map finished.

Now, let's all go enjoy it everyone!  8)

It looks really cool from the aerial.  What is total course length, avg hole distance, and slope change/elevation like?  It appears that you got some great views of the lake and really established tree lines.

The total length is approximately 6900', for an average length of 383'. the phone died before we got all gps info gathered, but I do know on hole 10 the basket is 33' above the tee. I'd estimate hole 1 basket is 60' above the tee, and holes 4, 9, and 18 the baskets are around 50' to 60' below the tee.

I'm certain that if I'd taken another three to six months looking at the land and aerials I could have come up with something different, and perhaps better, but the pins can easily be re-positioned as well as the tee boxes, and one of my main goals was to occupy as much of the land as possible.

It's 5 minutes from my house and Prairie Center, has good shade on most of the tee boxes, doesn't have a single soccer or baseball field within 2 miles, and has dramatic views of a nice little lake, so I know me and the birds will like roosting there. Also from tee 9, my djembe will be audible maybe a half mile away.  8)

Played a round out at the lake today and really enjoyed myself.  It was quite wet as one would expect with all the snow melting off but it was still manageable.  It was great seeing the little pond filled up on the #1 fairway, hopefully it stays that way as it adds an element of risk to your drive.  I can't wait to throw a few more rounds here and then I will put up a review on dgcoursereview.com  A big thank you to everyone who made this course possible!!

Drove out to check it out.  Looks like it will be a nice course once its mowed a few times and the grass greens up. Could see hole 10 with its tee shot uphill thru the trees, can't wait to see what that looks like when the leaves are on. Hope to get this week and play a few rounds on birdland. Can't wait to play it.

I just added this course to the Easy Scorecard app.  Since I didn't have current layout I entered it with the layout provided.  I also linked it to its facebook page.  I entered all Par 3 except the two long holes.

Eventually, someone with a big arm is going to have a great day out there and the score is going to be in the 40's. I would assume that a hot round in competition would be around 44. The only holes I don't see anyone deucing easily are Holes 1 and 4.

4 is 2able, perry had a 40 ft putt and could have got closer

Congratulations for the three which is still not a deuce. But I'm going to stand by my statement. It will rarely be deuced unless the trees clear out.

Played it today... Really fun course!!

I do think their are a handful of tweeners...

Once tee pads are poured and not 12 uphill tee pads, it will vastly improve...

Course is marked superbly and real easy to follow...!

I think the tree right off the tee on 11 could be removed and clear a few low hangers to help eliminate the "luck lines"

Either way, I will play this course a lot!!!

 52 is solid, I shot 54, with 2 deuces and 2-4's..(including a gacked 25 footer for a 3 on hole 1) anything sub 54 is a good score...

Felt like a 25 mph headwind on every hole...Typical??

I do really enjoy the course and shooting in the 40s is no stretch of the imagination, especially when concrete tees are in. I wish it was closer to us eastsiders!

Can't wait to get the tee pads in.  As it stands, folks have been moving the tees to their liking.  Hole #9 and #17 come to mind unless it was simply because of the mud.

Played it over the weekend and saw a few snakes, one of which I stepped on that was out in the open about 20 feet out from hole #5.  Garter snake I guess.  Yellow stripe down the back and dark rust color.

Played it yesterday. Pretty neato little course. the Lumpy/Uphill teepads killed me. Seems there's a headwind on every hole except 6,7,8

Finally made it out to play today.  Awesome course.  Very scenic and just a pleasure to be on during a beautiful 60 degree day like today.  The headwinds are no joke though, especially on the front 9 by the lake.  But it was damn pretty to look at as I watched my discs get whipped around :)

The navigation signage was very much appreciated as this thing covers a lot of terrain, turning and bending around every corner.  The back 9 seemed to have a bit less of this signage though, I did notice.

Teepads really didn't bother me.  I'd be more interested in seeing tee signs, as a lot of these baskets were tough/impossible to see from the tee, and made even tougher by the setting sun over the lake turning everything into a shadow and glare.

Don't let any of these small critiques dissuade you from my overall opinion of this course:  I frickin LOVED it.  Pretty long for my arm, but still found myself with doable upshots on most of the long holes (not all) and gave myself plenty of par attempts.  Even had a birdie attempt, maybe 2.  For the first time out, and throwing blind off of some tees, not bad.  I really can't wait to get out there again now that I know where some things are.

Couldn't believe on an awesome spring evening like today, I only saw 2 other groups on the entire course.  1 was a couple + child that I think only played 9 holes, and the other were 2 nice guys I played a few holes with before I jumped ahead.  Is this course still a secret?  Cause it might be the prettiest in KC.

I am terrified of what this thing might look like in the summer though.  Lots of thick, mushy grass right now makes me fearful that it will be a wasteland of knee high weeds in the summer.  Combine that with tons of trees, thick foliage, and what I'm sure will be a sh1tload of bugs and snakes next to the water, and I have my concerns about playing a summer round out there.  We will see.

Sorry for the stream of consciousness, just wanted to get my thoughts out on a mini review.

We have known for a couple years that the City of Olathe was planning to use the old golf course at Lakeside Hills for a new park. We were told when we put in Birdland that it most likely would be temporary. We were also told that only a few of the back holes (14, 15, 16, 17) would be affected. Last week Pete Cashen, Cade Garrelts and I met with the City and their Park Design firm to look over their plans. The majority of holes are affected by the new park plan and Birdland as we know it will not exist once construction starts in late spring of 2018. The course will likely be pulled partially or completely during construction for approximately one year and a revised or new version put in after the main construction is complete.

We have been provided the new plan, complete with the Park Design Firm's course modifications. In the meeting I proposed I evaluate the proposed changes, and look at a complete redesign as well. That is where we are today. I received the design firm's survey file and the new park plan file Friday 11-3-17 in the afternoon, and I have just started looking at it in detail. We will have a good idea by the end of November what direction the course layout will be taking. But ultimately the course will be shorter, tighter, and less of a Championship level course, with a new park road and a bike/walk trail crossing thru the land we once roamed freely upon.

Let's be optimistic and glad to be able to have a course at all. We had Birdland to ourselves for five years.  8)

Cade, Pete or I will provide updates as we find out the path forward.

Bummer man. Really have enjoyed it over the past couple years. It must really stink having known the whole time that it probably wouldn't last. I'll have to make sure I get out there a bunch in the coming months.

Looking at the land that would be left from those holes disappearing, I think there is more than enough land left to make a nice course.  The land that holes 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8 surround is not currently utilised.  That can be 2 additional holes there, if you utilize the trees.  Keep all the rest at short placements and you can easily get 18 decent size holes in.  There will need to be a bunch of tree planting, but if it becomes permanent, then it would be worth it. Just sucks that we lose it's use for a while.

Honestly, 15, 16 and 17 are my worst holes anyway.  Probably not as sad about that as some.

One suggestion, Plant a ton of evergreens along the road as a wind block.
