$10K and 500 Players for the 2014 Kansas City Ice Bowl

The Kansas City Ice Bowl is held every year in January at Rosedale Park. Its purposes are raising funds to fight hunger, having fun, and connecting our disc golf community in a positive way to the community at large. Our goals this year are to have 500 participants and to raise $10000 for our traditional charities: the Bishop Sullivan Center’s St James Food Pantry and Harvesters: the Community Food Network.

While the emphasis of the KC Ice Bowl is on charity and fun, we want as many disc golfers to play at least one, and hopefully, both rounds. This is how it works. You need to post an 18-hole score on either of Rosedale Park’s courses to qualify to play the nine-hole final round. Here’s when you can get your 18-hole round in:

Saturday, 9 pm: Shotgun start: Rosedale Top Course.
Saturday, 1 pm: Shotgun start: Rosedale Top Course
Saturday, 8am – 3pm: Flex start: Down Under
Sunday, 8am – 10 am: Flex start: Top or Down Under

For the shotgun starts, groups are limited to six per tee. The Ice Bowl tournament director, Ben Crosby, will do his best to accommodate all requests to play with your buds.

For the flex starts, especially on Sunday morning, please limit groups to five players. You can choose your own group or we will help you find one. Please note that to play the Sunday’s afternoon nine-hole final round, you need to turn your first-round  scorecard in no later than 12:30 pm.

Unlimited mulligans are for sale to be used during the first round only. Their use is highly encouraged as all mulligan proceeds go to our charities. In fact, we challenge you to buy an Ice Bowl Championship!

For the nine-hole second round, cards are determined by ranking players according to their first-round scores. This means that you'll likely be very closely matched (or at least have very similar scores) with others on your card. Players will be told which nine holes to play (top 1-9, top 10-18, DU 1-9, DU 10-18. The player on each card with the best total score wins a DX disc. The person with the lowest 27-hole score keeps the traveling trophy for a year.

The names on the KC Ice Bowl trophy include CD Steiner 1998, Laron Harris 1999, Todd Henry 2000 & 2002, Al Schack 2001, Mike Davis 2003, Brant Pfister 2004, Bobby Villarreal 2005, Brad Meyrs 2006, Otto Spiers 2007, Bryan Guthrie 2008 & 2012, Nick Winkelbauer 2009, Cecil Cameron 2010, Leo Daprato 2011, Eric McCabe 2013.

Potluck Lunch/Chili Contest
One of the wonderful traditions of the KC Ice Bowl is bringing food to share, especially chili. Those who bring chili are automatically entered into the Chili Contest, which awards a grand prize. Please let Rhonda Crosby know at 785.424.3672 or rhondacrosby@gmail.com that you’re bringing chili and/or other food to share.

Do we have a beer sponsor?  Brian Buckingham who used to be with 23rd St. Brewery in Lawrence and who donated a keg for 2012 is now at a new  brewery in North KC called Cinder Block Brewery.  I would think they would be interested.

Tallgrass probably would, but I was a little surprised how early we ran out last year.  The 'supply' was much lower than the 'demand'.

A few of us have talked about brewing some various homebrews as well if there was interest in it.

The demand will always be larger than the supply when you are talking about free beer and discgolfers.

True.
I was kind of think of the significance of the separation of supply & demand.
It was awfully nice last year which made for a larger turnout.

Hey - do we have a beer sponsor?  I'm willing to talk with Bucky at Cinder Block if we need to.

has the course been decided? I hope it's at blue valley where there is plenty of parking, central location, outstanding vistas, a neighborhood that needs our club presence and charity, and topography that promotes a wide range of other winter activities. that big ole course could also be temped out for weenie arms if needed.

We will need a generator Glover.  Not the TD, but the need for power is always something that is required for the event.  Anything that you can align would/will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Although you don't have to be a club member to play, it is encouraged for the experience and added perks of voting for officials and letting your opinion known.  This event is for charity and to have fun... Mulligans are able to be purchased and all procedes go to charity... Just ask Lowe about mulligans. :-)

I’ll return with more information soon, but wanted to officially announce that this year's Ice Bowl, Kansas City 27th, will be held at Rosedale Park on Saturday, January 25 and Sunday, January 26, and that the KCFDC has set its charitable goal high this year—$10K for our historic beneficiaries: Bishop Sullivan Center's Saint James Place Food Pantry and Harvesters: the Community Food Network.

To give us a chance to reach this goal, please download the Sponsorship Form (http://www.icebowlhq.com/docs/kcib14sponsor.pdf) and the Pledge Sheet (http://www.icebowlhq.com/docs/kcpledgesheet.pdf). The Sponsorship Form is four pages long: the first page describes the mission, pages two and three include the sponsorship options and a sponsor agreement, and page four offers a brief description of the KCFDC and of disc golf.

The various sponsorship options ask for both money (to go directly to the charities) and goods and services that we can use to trim operating expenses and provide prizes for the CTP contest and/or a raffle. Thus, there are sponsorships for printing, power (generator), heat, groceries, beer, non-alcoholic beverages, and a chili-contest prize. While our cause is a good one, most companies get many similar solicitations during the year. This means that we often get sponsorship, not from the sponsorship form per se, but from having a personal relationship with the potential sponsor. So, consider asking for gift certificates from restaurants and bars you patronize. Or perhaps you know the manager of your grocery store. The sponsorship form will help establish your credibility.

This will be the third year we’ve used the Pledge sheet, which has raised about $1600 the last two years. This is where you solicit smaller donations from your friends, co-workers, and families.

I'll be back soon with more about the competition, merchandise, and the chili contest. If you have any questions, please get with me. We will need volunteers to bring chili and to help at the event itself.

They have agreed to donate at least a 1/2 BBL (normal 15 gal keg) for the event.

Check these guys out - they make some great beer.

Title: Re: ICE BOWL 2014 - January 25th and 26th
Post by: robm on December 13, 2013, 02:44:38 PM
Commerically - no.  In order to highlight the sponsor (they are doing both as a philanthropic gesture and as an advertising move) it would not be a good thing to have more than one.

Other than commercial - Myself, Harold Berciunas and Dan Howard made 12.5 gallons of Oatmeal Milk Stout (basically my interpretation of Tallgrass' Buffalo Sweat) to donate.

This would bring the total to 28 gallons of beer, or 298 12 ounce servings.

If that is not enough, you may want to consider bringing a personal stash.  ;)

Actually - if there are any other homebrewers that want to donate, contact me off forum (PM, etc.) and we can talk about some options.

My cousin has officially donated the proper generator. He let us use it 2 years ago and is letting us use it again. A Rosedale neighbor is delivering it with a full can of gas and picking it up when we are done. Just like last time!
We will need power strips and a few long extension cords.

Great,

Typically the need for power is only on Sunday, as Saturday is reserved for playing in a suitable fashion.

THe long day on Sunday makes it tough so that is the food day typically!

Glover, over the years many have not always enjoyed your humour, but you have consistently been a great patron to helping out where you can, and yet again you achieve that status.  Thanks so much for getting this taken care of yet again!  Hundreds if not thousands of people thank you at this point!

So people will be playing their first 18 holes either up top or down under? That doesn't seem like a fair comparison for determining an overall winner.

The fact that people are paying to play in the fundraiser is cause enough to celebrate their help in getting to that goal. Anything extra is awesome! Since you gave me kudos Jack, I will return the favor by saying thanks for donating the hockey tickets. How much value does your tickets actually have? My estimated value of the generator, gas, delivery and pick up to be somewhere in the $200-$300 range. Never rented a generator of that size before so its a guesstimate.

Just spoke with the owner of Cinder Block confirming their donations.  They are donating two kegs.  One keg will be their Northtown Native - a California Common (i.e. light(er) lager) and the other will be either the Prime Pale Ale or their Block IPA.

Would like to remind everyone, the purpose of these donations is to raise money for charity -  the Bishop Sullivan Center’s St James Food Pantry and Harvesters: the Community Food Network.  A donation jar will be made available to donate cash or check near the beer taps.

I'll bring a power strip and an extension cord.  Along with the cow and hog I will put in my chili.  How many porta-potties are we gonna have again?

Fixed. Inadvertently put Chris's name down instead. Do you know what disc you want? I can package it and put in the will call box.

Some important final details about Ice Bowl weekend:

We will be setup for check-in or day of registration at 8 am.
If you are pre-registered and playing afternoon round, please make sure you check-in by 12:30 pm.

Unlimited mulligans are for sale to be used during the first round only. Their use is highly encouraged as all mulligan proceeds go to our charities. In fact, we challenge you to buy an Ice Bowl Championship!

1 round and a final nine will be played during the weekend.
WHEN you play that first full round is up to you. You choose your group and choose to play either Saturday or Sunday.

You have 3 Tee Time options for Saturday:
(if you pre-registered, you chose a time)

    1. Up Top at 9 am - Shotgun start
    2. Up Top at 1 pm - Shotgun start
    3. Down Under 8am – 3pm: Flex start

.... or instead of playing Saturday, you can play your 1 round on Sunday.

You need to post an 18-hole score on either of Rosedale Park’s courses to qualify to play the nine-hole final round.

    Final 9 on Sunday
Sunday, 8am – 10 am: Flex start: Top or Down Under

    Also on Sunday:
Chili contest and chili potluck lunch
    Beer and music
    CTP and Mini Golf
    Raffle

Come out for the fun and festivities on Sunday- whether you're playing or not. Hang out for an hour or all day.

Remember this event is all about supporting our charities- Harvesters and Bishop Sullivan Center- and to have fun with our disc golf family!

We broke last year's record for Ice Bowl pre-registrations - 234.

Now let's break our record for donations to our charities!

The KCFDC has set its charitable goal high this year—$10K for our historic beneficiaries: Bishop Sullivan Center's Saint James Place Food Pantry and Harvesters: the Community Food Network.

To give us a chance to reach this goal, please download the Sponsorship Form and the Pledge Sheet.

http://www.icebowlhq.com/docs/kcpledgesheet.pdf (http://www.icebowlhq.com/docs/kcpledgesheet.pdf)

The Sponsorship Form is four pages long: the first page describes the mission, pages two and three include the sponsorship options and a sponsor agreement, and page four offers a brief description of the KCFDC and of disc golf.

I have 3 extension cords and a generator. My fingers are crossed on having at least 10 power strips show up. I'm bringing a gas stove.  :o

Yes, afternoon. Usually around 1-2 time frame. Since it's just nine holes we're usually all done by about 4-4:30.

Inquiring minds want to know.....how many mulligans were necessary to get down to a 40?

One person I talked to shot a 46 with 10 mulligans.

I used 10 to get to 41.  However, only 5 of them worked.  I wasted 5 of them.

Used 8 to get a 48, only 3 helped me (missed that 40 foot putt twice) Used 4 on drives and threw exactly the same drive twice each time (once three in a row)

At least you remembered to bring your Mulligans.  I left ten in my truck when I switched cars with the wife.  I doubt they would have helped me much anyway.  At least we got a great weekend for disc golf!

Next year we are adding a staff member to walk with Jacks group and sell mulligans as he needs them.  Why stop at 36 try for the 34 that Dan Cashen shot.   ;D   ::)

That is a Great idea! ;D  Maybe then I wouldn't be so tempted to give away my mulligans to other people on my card then as well.

The human numbers, so far, include a total of 437 paid entrants, of whom 355 played at least one round of golf. This list usually grows when people who missed Ice Bowl end up supporting the cause. By the way, if you missed Ice Bowl, you can still support the cause by buying a package or donating some cash.

Tomorrow I begin to get into the tournament accounting.  Stay tuned for a preliminary count. The Pledge Sheets, which people used to solicit donations from friends, family, and co-workers, are not due until February 3.

Please let me know where the mistakes are below and if there are some scores to add.

Joe Hesting, Scott Reek, Zeke Henry,Wayne Callicot, Matt   Hays, John   Thompson, Derrick   Holt = All played the final 9 on CD's card.  Little man got his score posted and tossed the rest of us away.  Nice :-[

Joe 45  28   73

Don't know the rest.

The score card for that hole did not get turned in.  CD keeps his own score, so he was able to tell me what he shot the second round.  If you know who had the card get on them.  There is still time to get the scores added in.

I was on that card with joe and all those guys finished. I'm not sure how my score got turned in too with cd's. I was in no shape to keep score so they wisely did not let me have anything to do with the scorecard. I'm not sure if I actually shot a 26, but that would be pretty good considering the fantastic bartender seemed to think I was one of his most frequent visitors. He makes a great stout to boot.

On the beer, I do think it adds a bit of a draw having "free beer" at the event. I may not have donated the proper amount for all the beer I drank, and I did drink a healthy share, but after all the mulligans, entry fee, chili, side games and such I was in pretty deep. If it gets more people out and involved anything else on top of that is just a bonus.

I can definitely understand this perspective.

next year have cute girls in bikinis selling mulligans at every green and tee, and perhaps a few strolling the fairways, I would have bought a few after I used my players pack mulligans. BTW the players pack mulligans were an awesome addition, and I expect those 'samples' led to higher mulligan purchases this ice bowl.

It looks like we will now need the use of 2 generators for future Ice Bowls.
