Title: Roc V Buzzz 2013 - September 21 @ Swope Park
Post by: jamidanger on June 27, 2013, 10:57:20 AM
one of my fav concepts from ekolk!

Quote

Roc V Buzzz
September 21st, 2013
Swope Park
25.00 USD

Two rounds of team play
21 holes
Players declare a team- Roc or Buzzz
36 players to each team
72 total players
Any Roc or any Buzzz may be thrown
No other disc type allowed; this is not a putting competition
72 will be the maximum score on the 21 hole layout; this is to minimize outliers
The winning team receives a custom Roc V Buzzz mini disc

What else you ask? Your entry includes two discs- one KC Pro Roc and one Z Buzzz, lunch, beverages, libations, CTPs both rounds and Ring of Fire between rounds. Plus I'll have DJ Tyrone out there spinning records. yes, vinyl records hipsters  ;)

Flyer to follow. This was a great time last year with Team Roc winning by a hair, and without the putter option I expect a more decisive victory this time around, but for which team I can only guess. Get your team together. Oh yeah, I must include the Ossa rule for the CTPs. Lat year, our friend Jose Ossa won every CTP on the course last year. In fact, he won so much-including first place and cash- he gave away a bag he won on the last CTP. So, the Ossa rule is that you may win only one CTP in the Roc V Buzz competition. Just in case Bowen or Murphy or Ossa show up and bomb their Rocs 400+ feet. Yes, there will be some long holes.
Registration to follow next week.

There is already a Roc Vs Buzzz being worked out by Ekolk. You should probably contact him directly.

The tournament proposal needs to go to the Bod or apporval. But yes, I have a date, Sep. 21, already secured and will have the details posted afer the next BoD meeting after approval.

I like your energy there Danger! The plan for the 1st annual Roc v Buzzz will be similar to last year including a player's pack, lunch, drinks, and games. We had a great ring-of-fire last year and lots-o-winners. This year there will be no stipulations for which buzzz or roc you can throw. Looking like a team event again this year. Details to follow next meeting.

I Suspect though that if there is a Wasp close by, the Drone of comments would cause such a Buzzz that people would re-evaluate the Truth and have a different Verdict on the reliabilty of the Roc and quite possibility send a Shockwave through the Core of their own Obex, resulting in much Pain.

This is punnery for a highly specialized sub culture.

Will it be the Roc or Buzzz which manifests itself in your game through totemic belief? What exactly is a Roc and what is a Buzzz, wasp-no, hornet-no, drone-no, bee- not cool enough. Oh, that's right "super straight modified Wasp." Someone who played D&D please tell us what a Roc is and isn't.

Please help me out, I am new to competitive Disc Golf...

Glover, There is no registration link. Sign up at DD or DGW please. 25 bucks.

bMathews, It is open to the first 36 per team. No overflow. So, if you are thinking about trying this out, don't wait too long. I try to put on a competitive and fun event for all. This event is more about camaraderie than pure competition.

The West Plaza Tomato Company has offered to generously sponsor the event again this year, and we have Tall Grass Brewery as a beer sponsor as well.

BTW, Mark Stiles is the first to sign up on Team Buzzz.

I also had a couple questions on the course tonight about how many Rocs or Buzzzes you can throw. You can throw any Roc or any Buzzz at any time. So if you want to tee off with a Roc 3 and approach and putt with KC Pro, that is fine. This includes any plastic. No putters.

I have a soccer game to coach at 12:00pm in Lee's Summit, which puts me out from 11:00 - 2pm.  Is there anyway, I can participate in one round, either before or after?  I wouldn't want to let me team down.

Yes, for anyone who cannot make both rounds, you can take a 72 for the round you do not throw. 72 is the maximum score on the 21 hole layout. This is so we can focus on the low scores for each team (take out the outliers on one end).

Is there an easy way to find out how many people have signed up for this so far? Specifically on the Buzzz side? I planned on signing up before Rosedale league tonight, but will be unable to make it.
Also, are bag tags on the line since it is a non-standard tournament?

Thanks guys...

bMathews, If you are in just send me a PM and I will put you down, and you can pay at your conveience. Right now there are more than double the number of Buzzzes than Rocs. I suspect that will change soon.

If you want to challenge your card to bag tags, go right ahead. It is a club event and I think all tags should be on the line, but I don't know if that is in the rules.

I am planning on keeping on schedule as much as possible. With foursomes on 18 of 21 holes, play should move fairly smoothly.

8:30 Check-in/Day of Registration
8:55 Players Meeting
9:10 First Round Start
~11:40 Lunch and Ring of Fire
~12:40 Second Round Start
~3:40 Awards and CTP for ACE fund if needed.

Last year, I had folks out a little after 4, but well before 5. With only Rocs and Buzzzes play moves along. You just need to decide which Roc or Buzzz to throw or putt with.

I'm out throwing in the field tonight, got a bag-o-buzzzs plus the MVP Axis that I have fun tossing around and wouldn't ya know, it's the Axis that was consistently hitting the lines I wanted. And then I had an small epiphany, Eric you have only included the WalMart and Target of the disc golf industry to participate, and this aggression towards the smaller start-ups just will not stand.

I'm championing an epic tournament crash the likes of which KC has never seen before. Team Axis, Team Halo, Team Fugitive, Team Ghost... pack your bags and head down to Swope Saturday morning and let's show these tossers how a midrange disc can really be used! Team Axis is in the works, PM me for details.

So I'll have a bag full of Rocs. Like 15-20 of them.

Yep, Bird Father all the Rocs you want but nothing else, except for all the Buzzzes. I think Rocs may have an advantage on the course this year. Thank you and hope to see you out there.

YES, any Buzzz and any Roc. But that is it. BTW the discs are in and they look awesome! Lots to do still for tomorrow, so see you then.

Since im assuming there will still be a few spots left, what time does the event start? I might be able to get out of parenting duty to come down and I will atleast be able to pay and fill a spot if needed.

About what time will this thing end? I'm thinking about coming up for a Royals game (been a long time since they have been in a postseason race) and wonder if I could fit both in that day.  Thanks

I know some statisticians will have fun with this data, the amateur cursory glance says drop those outlying 72's and Team Buzz wins handily!

Too bad about the turn-out Eric, it was a beautiful fall-like Saturday, hopefully folks got out and enjoyed it.  I was glad to spend it at Swope with a great bunch of golfers. Thanks to everyone who contributed their time and effort!

What a fun event. I can't wait to play next year. Discraft needs to come out with a new putter and call it a Classic Buzz to help even the field of discs used at this event. Team Buzz only lost because it was the most popular disc choice. There needs to be a equal match up between teams. If team Roc can only come up with 11 players then just use the top 11 scores on Team Buzz.  There was also one player that finished ahead of me who thought 4 was the max score you could take on one hole and I saw him get at a 7 on one hole. Maybe that rule was only for Team Roc members.

I'll do this one thing at a time-

Team Buzz only lost because it was the most popular disc choice. There needs to be a equal match up between teams. If team Roc can only come up with 11 players then just use the top 11 scores on Team Buzz.

You can't ignore the worst Buzzz throwers without ignoring the worst Roc throwers as well, wouldn't be fair. Instead you have to use either the standard deviation (which takes a lot of math, and Erik should have that data posted soon), or you simply take a certain percentage of each team.  Drop, say, the bottom 20% from each team. Then you'd drop the bottom 2 players from team Roc, and the bottom 4 from team Buzzz.

After doing that, team Roc averages 123 exactly, and team Buzzz's average was 125 exactly.

There was also one player that finished ahead of me who thought 4 was the max score you could take on one hole and I saw him get at a 7 on one hole. Maybe that rule was only for Team Roc members.

The rule was that the maximum round score was 72, which was to eliminate extreme outliers. That does break down to 4 shots per hole, but it wasn't mean to be used on each hole, it was meant to be used for the round in it's entirety. If someone interpreted it that way, that was their mistake.

Guth,

Thanks for the positive feedback and that situation sucks. It was obviously misinterpreted and Peter nailed it on the head. I could have dealt with that discrepancy then but really can't do anything now. One player has told me he misinterpreted the max score, so yes I thought I had clearly communicated but not at all.  It's one more thing to work on for next year.

I'll have the numbers up this week. I gotta head cold now and a full week ahead, so it dropped in priority.

Once again a huge thank you to our sponsors and to all who played and made it great.

Is this some kind of OP math that Paola folks don't get? 21 holes times 4 per should be 84 strokes.

I believe the  guth  is making reference to my erroneous thinking that lead to a gross misinterpretation of the rules even after several conversations with the td.

here's a helpful hint: if you never pitch in to help or have never run an event and you have an issue or question, bring it up BEFORE the event is over. chances are it can be resolved then and there.
and go ahead and add three strokes to the player whose score you were keeping and he still finished ahead of you.
Thanks for a great time Eric, 125.05 reasons to celebrate and a roc ain't one.

lol I was still stuck on 18 holes. Valid point, although I suppose the 72 stroke limit served it's purpose well either way.

When a player blows up on one hole it usually affects the way they play the rest of the tournament that is unless they can just take a 4 and convince everyone in their group that's the rule.

"if you never pitch in to help or have never run an event and you have an issue or question, bring it up BEFORE the event is over. chances are it can be resolved then and there."

Is this advise for the person who cheated or the people on his card that let him? If there is an issue that comes up during the round its the responsibility of the player and the people on the card to resolve it and if they have "never pitched in to help or have never run an event" maybe they don't know that you can go to the TD to get it resolved. I did not see anybody cheat. I did see someone playing badly and was still able to come in with a good score.

Here's a link to the results and some stats.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ArlNIimRXNHEdHNEVUdDckRDUk5ibVhCVGFsdHVXMUE#gid=1 (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ArlNIimRXNHEdHNEVUdDckRDUk5ibVhCVGFsdHVXMUE#gid=1)

David Valdiviez was the day's champion representing Team Roc.

Mark Stiles took home the most cash with an ace on hole 8 and second place overall.

Team Buzzz was more consistent and four of the top six came from Team Buzzz, but the players who showed up for Roc come through.

Thanks again to the KCFDC, WPTC, TallGrass, DD, and DGW for  their support. The Petrins, Mike and Melissa, were amazing! Volunteer help like that is worth paying for. You guys were great!

I'm already thinking about next year.
