Title: East vs West Team Championship
Post by: Tracy on December 27, 2011, 12:49:41 PM
move discussion here to stop thread drift on KCFDC board topic

Some basic thoughts on the event:

It will be a fund raiser.  All proceeds, less awards, will go to a beneficiary to be determined.

This is a club member only event.  However, in addition to being a club member, participants will have to compete in a certain number of summer leagues prior to a predetermined date (probably something like 2 weeks before the Team Championship event). This is to deter "ringers."

Each team will have 16 players. The teams will be comprised of 10 players from qualifying event(s), 4 Captains picks and 2 lottery winners.  Each team will carry 10 Open, 4 Masters(minimum) and 2 Women.

The team Captains will be the club VP of each state. Currently John Theiss for MO. and Jim Sherwood for KS.  If they can't or don't want to be a Captain, they should be responsible to find someone to take their place.

The competition will be a two day, 3 round event, with 2 rounds of doubles matches on Saturday and 1 round of singles matches on Sunday.  Each match is worth 1 point (1 for a Win, 0 for a loss or .5 for a halve) for a total of 32 points. 16.5 needed to claim the Championship.

I'll present this with more detail to the BoD.  Basically, I'll be looking for their event support, some funding to secure a perpetual trophy and advice on a good charity to support.

The event name should be West vs East Team Championship.  ;D

This sounds really cool.

"However, in addition to being a club member, participants will have to compete in a certain number of summer leagues prior to a predetermined date (probably something like 2 weeks before the Team Championship event). This is to deter "ringers."  "

I am confused about this part of it... do you mean just to keep the East from bringing in someone like a Nikko or something like that?

I like all the details Tracy.  How about proceeds go to the club.

When is the next meeting and will this be part of the business to be discussed.

This sounds fun, except being a 2 day competition. There also needs to be some incentive to win like some type of pay out with donated prizes or a party for the winners.

Charity... "Buy replacement trees for the disc golf courses of Kansas City."

Name... "Toilet bowl: #1 vs. #2."

It should had at least one round on a new safari course to keep it fair to all involved.

What will determine the alignment of players? I am from Missouri, but reside in kansas.  Also will the matches consist of matchplay or stroke play?

Why stop there...

Let's go with North vs South too.

Then those winners play the East-West winners for the Ultimate Championship!

Yes, possibly, just not this year.  One step at a time.   :)  Let's see what the interest is, how it goes and work out the kinks before we make it more complex.

As I mentioned earlier, possibilities for different and/or expanded regions is the reason I don't want the event name to be border war based. Ideas I have bouncing around; The Heartland Cup or The Liberty Cup or The Kansas City Cup.

Name it what you want, but any East vs West tournament in KC is inevitably going to have a Missouri vs Kansas "border war" vibe. Love that about this town! ;D

Oh, I get it. It's funny because gay means stupid and isn't a sexual preference. Or maybe it is, and it is inferred that we are all homosexual because we play in Olathe.

Stay classy Smithville.

i prefer mo. vs ks. because it is like the border war. dan reps the smith-villains, i rep the clay-platte airbender hookah society, or cpahs, it's still mo. and not every gay person is from olathe either, elton john was born in england, although i'm pretty sure his birth name is not elton.

Dan, just make sure those robes are cleaned and pressed for the cross burning this weekend. Don't worry about Cooper.

Cooper, if you don't knock it off with the "straight white guilt" apologist act, I may be forced to pull your WO sponsorship.

Stay cool and stick-free in your anal cavity, Olathe.

Tracy, I know you said Match Play but perhaps look at the Ryder Cup format. They mix in best ball, alternate shot and match play singles and doubles.  For those of you who may also be fans of the Ryder Cup you might agree a HUGE part of the format is match-ups during specific rounds/formats.

You might also think about matching team tshirts? At least for the players from Olathe. OK, that was a joke, lightening up!

Just my $.02

Hi Leo,  this time around it's just KS vs MO based on residency.

North vs South tosses in a complication I don't want to have to deal with this year.

MO v KS sounds good, but if you ever switch to North/South, just use I-70 as the line. Might as well get the Border War out of the way for now, though. ;D

I-70's not a bad idea for a future North-South event. I'd be a Southie.  North of the Rivers and South of the Rivers would work also....using the Missouri River on the Missouri Side and the Kaw River on the Kansas side.

But that's for another time. I'd unlikely be able to play in this event anyway.....I certainly won't be able to play in enough leagues.
C'est la vie.

We should do a KC-Columbia team event sometime anyway.

i think the custom disc should be the fundraiser, and then the players can work out a sidebet, or play skins and the team with the most cash in skins wins a trophy, but i agree that an entry fee for payout is not really workable in an east/west showdown. an observation on charity events - we've got plenty, they're fun. east vs west seems to be a more competetive and prestigious event than to be diluted by a philanthropic interest <think NFL probowl to cure cancer?>
Title: Re: East vs West Team Championship
Post by: Ken Franks on February 20, 2012, 11:32:41 PM

What I suggest for those wanting to play for money is to do so as match wagers.   Negotiate for a handicap on the wager.  For example, "Tank, I'll put $30 against your $50, you start out 4 down and even goes to me."  (of course negotiated wagers don't change the actual scratch match score)

Anyway, please post workable ideas for consideration.  I'd like to have this ironed out before the next board meeting.

Than it becomes high stakes and nothing about what it's supposed to be about...

I would vote winner take all! That's bragging rights!!!
Title: Re: East vs West Team Championship

I'd like to see it with a big entry and big payout, with no charity involvement. I prolly won't participate myself if all the entry wager doesn't pay out to the winners.

Sounds to me more like the Ryder Cup that Columbia and St. Louis compete in. Pretty much the same, but they use Ryder Cup qualifying tourney's to decide who competes. I can't remember the format, but I know it's very similar to the actual Ryder Cup. ie. Head to head matches and point system. I don't remember the buy-in or stakes. I think it's all free because Dave would always make a tourney disc for everyone, and we played for braggin' rights.

Run it the way you want it Tracy.

If you are going to put in the work to make this awesome thing happen then you, and you alone, should be choosing whether this is a charity event or for a payday. The only extent to which you should be swayed out of making this for charity is if you deem the potential loss of interest sufficient enough that you wouldn't want to run said event.

It is a really cool idea and I would hope to represent the West when it happens.

i'd like to propose:
east vs west first weekend in october, all our courses should be sweet by then
qualifying at tournaments<kan-U, KCWO> - top 4 scores regardless of division played, exception - ladies
tracy - what a job figuring qualifiers at leagues!

that'sall, just trying to ball the roll going

also a sidenote on the music at WYCO is really good when it's playing at the shelter

i know the corses haven't been decided, but smithville is incredibille, and a lot of top kansas players shoot well there too, so if you wanted that for finals, the complex could handle a ton of casuals and club members, in addition to the 32 contestants. check with dan cuz i am so sure that getting a pavillion and planning would take quite a bit of time but be worth it in the long run.

Cooper, I agree with you to an extent, although Tracy spoke in front of the board and said he really only interested in running it this year and hoping the club would take it over and keep it going. As relation to our last board meeting, we are striving to have more stability and consistency with the KCFDC...

even at 2 weeks out sh1t can happen, captains may need to find a couple of alternates to be able to field a full 16 player team, just think if one of your female players was whitney houston, eh, you'd lose an entire match or something over that. hey tracy, what happens if there's only 15 on our team?

I will brainstorm. Some of these are jokes and the others are not. It is up to you do decide which is which. Also, in the spirit of an event like the Ryder Cup, I think naming it after a person, particularly someone involved in KC disc golf or just a famous Kansas Citian makes sense.

The BBQ Cup
The Mo-Kan Showdown
The Border War
The Rothstein Cup
The 'Crazy' John Classic
The Disc Golf World Team Championships Presented by Dynamic Discs in Conjunction with the Kansas City Flying Disc Club
The Truman Cup
The Boss Tom Team Championships

I am getting the team championship info from Sprague, as Iowa did that this year, teams of 8 play.....starts out 2 man doubles, best shot against another team, the next round was 4 man alternate shot, then the final was an 8 man team on each side, with alternate drivers on every hole, (each team gets 2 drivers) then play alternate shot based on each hole from there....

I am asking for all the rules to be sent as well as the new ones that they are thinking about doing.

I was told that a KC team can compete next year, if we won though the trophy and the location would go to the highest finishing team left from Iowa.

They are also looking to do a ratings cap next year of 7000.  Plus if you have a woman, you get extra points as well...

You should think about making the alternate shot rounds in the Ryder Cup Foursomes format. In otherwords, one player tees off on the even holes, and the other player tees on the odd holes, and then you alternate from the tee shot. That way a hot driver or a hot putter doesn't take advantage. Both players have to do both.

Now that the KCWO is in our rear view mirror let's think about who would make a good Captain for this event?

I had several people express this weekend how they would like to be "more involved."  Taking on Team Captain is a perfect start.

Tank, Arturro, Heberto, Coop, Guthrie, Joe, Mike D., Dick, and a few other weapons I know of pretty much makes it a one sided fight.

Hey East side..... why not just hand over your money now, we'll kick you in the balls, and call it a day.  :P

I suppose the East side does have C.D., Slim, Todd Henry, Danger, Stiles, Mike T, and.....?
but I just don't see enough to hang with the murderer's row that will make up the vastly superior West side team.

Can we get it off the Chiefs opener day.....? Actually, it prolly won't matter as I predict an East side forfeit.  ;D

I'm sure this is still tentative, but we should know the locked in schedule after Wednesday.

Quote
To keep things centralized, the event will be held at WaterWorks and Rosedale.  Saturday Sept. 8th, will be the two rounds of doubles matches at WW, Sunday Sept. 9th, morning will be the round of singles matches at Rosedale.  Spots on the roster will be up for grabs during qualifiers in August. For the West team, qualifying events will be at Rosedale league on Aug 8th and Prairie Center league on Aug 20th.  For the East team, qualifiers will be at Waterworks on Aug 16th and Swope league on Aug. 28th.  If any of them happen to be rained out, we'll postpone 'til the next league at that location.  Once I have Captains on board, I'll post details about how many spots will be available at each of the qualifiers.

We'll start promoting this event in June, once the XXXth KCWO has wound down.

note: changed qualifier dates. They may (will likely) change again based on Captains availability to help.

Title: Re: East vs West Team Championship
Post by: Tom on June 27, 2012, 06:57:45 AM
Much of this has already been posted somewhere in the thread.

$25 is the "entry fee." The event will be a fund raiser.  All proceeds, less cost of sponsor discs and awards, will benefit tree planting at Rosedale.

This is a KCFDC member only event.  You have to be an active member.  Active is not the same as current.  You must play in leagues regularly, donate time to work days or help club functioning, etc.  This is to deter "ringers" from being brought in.

The competition will be a one day, September 8th, 2 round event, with 1 round of doubles matches on Saturday morning at Waterworks and 1 round of singles matches on Saturday afternoon at Rosedale.  The doubles matches (8) will be worth 2 points each. The singles matches will be worth 1 point each.  32 points total available, 16.5 needed to claim the Championship.

Jake Bowen and Cooper Arnold have agreed to be the East and West captains respectfully. I gave them each a spot on their team.

Each team will consist of 16 players. Each team will carry 11 Open, 3 Masters(minimum) and 2 Women.  Each team will be comprised of 10 players from qualifying event(s), 2 lottery winners and 3 Captains picks as outlined below.

Q:
So how does one get into this thing?

A:
  • First, pay sponsor/entry - $25? That gets you a sponsor disc and the satisfaction of knowing you'll be helping a good disc golf cause. (sponsor disc will be some sort of custom stamp/dye to be determined later)
  • That allows you to attempt to qualify at one of the designated leagues in your region. 10 players total from each region make their team via qualifiers
  • If you don't qualify, your name will automatically be put into the lottery. 2 players will be drawn at random for each team
  • The remaining sponsor/entries will go on a list for Captains picks consideration.  3 players will be chosen by each captain to complete their rosters.

There will be two qualifiers for each side.  These qualifiers will be held at leagues in your region:

For the West team:
- Rosedale league on Aug 8th (3 Open, 1 Masters and 1 Woman)
- Wyco league on Aug 24th. (4 Open, 1 Masters)
For the East team:
- Waterworks on Aug 16th (3 Open, 1 Masters and 1 Woman)
- Swope league on Aug. 28th (4 Open, 1 Masters)

If any of them happen to be rained out, we'll postpone 'til the next league at the same location. 5 spots available at each league.

I wish the choice of Rosey for the singles round would be reconsidered. Wyco is a much nicer setting, and won't be swarming with casuals that will get in the way of the competition. Even though the decsion is not up for debate, I am confident if it was put to a vote by the team members, Wyco would be the favored course.  8)

I would like to buy a sponsor disc for the opportunity to compete.  I guess the bright side about Missouri is that it seems the top players are in Kansas; so, at least we have a better chance to qualify to make the team!  Although, the hypothetical potential match ups seem lopsided in favor of the west side unless we push the boundary a little further west.  Aren't we just one big happy community anyway?   Why let the state line divide us.

Some day, we would like to have a team Old Pike that competes once a month in round robin type league against other course teams.

Executive decision:

Shirts will be given out instead of a disc.  That way I don't run the risk of being stuck with a bunch of custom printed plastic. I'll have the shirts made in two colors. So you'll have a team uniform for the day.  ;D That said, please provide your t-shirt size along with your entry.

I really can't stand having another T-shirt.  I need another T-shirt like I need another hole in my head.  I mean half the time they don't fit me right.  I either risk getting a medium and it being too short or too tight in the shoulders or getting a large and it fitting fine in the shoulders, but it's vanity sized and fitted for someone with a much larger love of beer (if you know what I mean).  If I'm going to get another shirt, I would want it to be dry fit or a polo as that's almost all that I wear anymore when I play.  At least with a disc, I can let my kids have it or give it to a new player.  Not much can be done with a t-shirt you don't want except give it to good will.  I'd rather you just save the money for more trees and not buy the T-shirts.   Or how about a new golf towel.  Mine is looking a little worn.
Title: Re: East vs West Team Championship
Post by: eeastwood on July 19, 2012, 11:19:54 AM
I agree about plastic.  Most including myself don't need more plastic.  And if they're good quality shirts that look cool, then that's a different story.  What do you think about the towel idea?

Not yet.  Plan is to take care of it at Ol' Settlers tomorrow.  However, if Jake isn't going down there... um... this evening?

I plan on playing tomorrow.

Maybe you just don't know the capability of the East players...several of whom you may not even know. Don't think I know you? Not meant as a jab, just an honest statement.

Whoa, easy there. In no way was I attempting to contaminate your vagina with sand. There are many fine names representing the East, and as an eastsider myself, I will be rooting for all of you. But when you see names like Tank, Arturo, Leo, et al on that West team, it's hard not to consider them the favorites.

Deal, so if the East loses by less then 70,000, you will wear a Blackhawks jersey to the league championship.

i'll add to that wager, and even offer your choice of color to wear a BlackHawks jersey, White, Red, Green, or Black?  If need be, I could be persuaded into purchasing a new one from the Wineter Classic that was a few years back when I played CLiff Drive with you barefoot.

Dude, I'm not wearing any of those ugly-ass Whackhawk jerseys, or any other sports jersey that contains racially-stereotypical imagery of Native Americans. I may, however, be open to wearing apparel that is offensive to Italians, if you have anything like that.

Nobody on the west side believes for one second that the east is going to mail this thing in. I think it will be very competitive, but still fun for both sides. I have to believe that they would be a whole lot more nervous if a solid middle of the order guy like myself hadn't relocated this year ;D

I think this is an excellent idea.  Of course I'm fond of the acting first and asking for forgiveness after the fact if busted scenario.  Mike, what about a 10am round at Rosedale, lunch anywhere nearby that has good beer on tap, followed by an enjoyable afternoon drinking more beer and heckling the side of your choice.  Anyone else up for this?  Who knows, it may be the best hecklers that decide the outcome of the match!

Chelios is allowed to be worn in a Hab's jersey, or a Thrasher's Jersey, and of course the preferred jersey of the Mighty Hawk.  Those wearing #24 from a blown out tire team (though winning a cup and bringing it to Chicago where my buddy Pete got to Kiss it.....who isn't even a hockey fan mind you.....not bitter....still not bitter....) from the time of indiscriminate awolness shall not be allowed.

Just for my own clarification on this Tracy......the first round is doubles best shot match play with a 4-some, and the 2nd round will be singles match play with 4-somes, but only to shore up cards.  We will play our own match on the singles font and keep score separately on that front.

For some odd reason I was under the impression that the doubles match play was going to be played out single-style, then added, and I am not sure why or where I got that notion..... ???

I pulled a muscle in my calf on #11, this was the #11 basket...i didn't make the putt, but can barely walk today.....That being said, it ha nothing to do with the win that Loomis got from me during the roun.  I was quite happy to actually push it to #16 before ailing off the course....pride hurt, but victory evident for Team EAST SIDE.  My entire right calf lower part is on fire today....soooo it wasn't a cramp as I had thought, I am hopeful that I will be able to play in the TLC next week.  This was a lot of fun, but trying to putt with that Kansas Plate in between the legs wasn't real easy!!

In Jack's defense... Here is the story of his second round David vs. Goliath trial...

Hole One... He sucked that up pretty bad. I didn't. Jack's down 1 after 1. Jack says, "FUC..!!!"
Hole Two... He parks it but has to settle for the par, and I bogey... Even after 2. Jack says, "COME ON JACK!"
Hole Three... Push... Even after 3. Jack is silent after making a thirty foot putt.
Hole Four... He parks it again, I bogey... JACK IS UP 1 after 4!!! Jack is still silent.
Hole Five... He shanks his drive into the ground directly off the tee pad. It miraculously kicks up into the air and rolls half way to the hole. He misses the putt. Even again after 5. Jack says, "FUC... COME ON JACK!!"
Hole Six... We push. Even after 6. Jack says nothing.
Hole Seven... Jack's wheels come off. He throws one hard right into the trees and it sails down to Middle Earth. I park mine. Mercy killing. Jack down 1 after 7. Jack says nothing.
Hole Eight... Jack goes OB on his second shot. I park it. Jack down 2 after 8. Jack says, "FUUUUUCCC.... COME ON, GOD DAM... IT.."
Hole Nine. Push. Jack down 2 after 9. Jack medicates and says nothing.
Hole Ten. Jack parks his drive. Jack down 1 after 10. Jack says "EAST SIDE!"
Hole Eleven. While attempting to drive, Jack comes up lame. It's his calf. He can't make the drive so he rolls it on purpose. Jack down 2 after 11. Jack says, "FUC... SHI... GOD DAM... IT."
Hole Twelve. I miss my putt and we push. Jack down 2 after 12. Jack says, "Are you two or three up on me?"
Hole Thirteen. Jack salvages a bad drive and we push. Jack down 2 after 13. Jack is silent.
Hole Fourteen. Push. Jack down 2 after 14. Jack medicates.
Hole Fifteen. Jack goes back to Middle Earth, but we push after he makes a huge save. Jack down 2 after 15. Jack says "EAST SIDE" as news of more Missouri victories come in.
Hole Sixteen. Jack overshoots his upshot and misses his putt. He loses 3 and 2. Jack cannot hold it in any longer and he says a lot of bad words... Jack says, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. FUC... SHI... " Gracious, even in death, Jack's team wins despite his loss.

Jack made it very competitive, until some stranger with a lead pipe ran up and hit in the shins while he was on pad 11.

Big congrats to Eastwood, who came back strong against a TOUGH Shanan to go all squared on that match!  I had written you off as a loss, so glad I was wrong!

There were a lot of tough matchups. East side prevailed, but I'm sure West will come back fightin next year. Bring it on!! What an awesome event to get started!!
