32nd Annual Kansas City Wide Open - June 20-22, 2014

Once again, we are part of the PDGA National Tour Elite Series. We will be seeing some of the best players in our game, shredding OUR courses that we know like the back of our hands. BUT, in order to do that, we need all the help and support we can get. This can be done two different way.

VOLUNTEER
I need YOU... to do something. I'll have a way for you to sign up soon at kcfdc.org (http://kcfdc.org). At that point you can let me know what days you are available and what times you can work when I need you to. What you can do for now is help me get as much sponsorship money as we can so we can give the best and most professional event possible.

Which leads to...

SPONSORSHIP
Download the Tri-Fold Sponsorship Form here. (http://kcfdc.org/docs/KCWO2014_SponsorForm.pdf) You can also pick a nicely printed version from me at Disc Golf World. I will try to get a more web-friendly version up soon.

I know everyone wants more details about the event and I will get to that soon. First things, first. Sponsors. Help me, help Kansas City.

Thank you!

Confirm?

And the really good news is those are all short courses, so people like me that can't throw very far will have a good chance. 8)

You quit picking on my buddy Tank. Hey Tank, I do need a lesson. If people on the east side won't be nice you should move back to Kansas.  ;D

Well, if it's in a magazine it must be true...

Actually that is true. The NT/A-Tier will be playing those three very short courses. And the B-Tier will not be. The set up is the same as last year in that regard. Everyone will play 3 rounds. And there will be a final 9 on Sunday at Swope again. There is just a few details, like Tee Times vs. Shotgun to decide. It comes down to letting the B-Tier have one of those 3 courses or not in their event.

Now, about that Sponsorship money we need to make things happen.

Throwing Accurately 20' > Throwing Accurately 200' > Throwing Accurately 500'

I don't know Chris, if you can't throw accurately from 500', you end up throwing more than '200, which inevitably puts you farther out than '20.  But enough of this discussion.  My apologies for the sidetrack.  Let's bring this thread back to where Dick intended it to go.  I'll do my best to come up with some sponsors.

The list of people in this town who can throw accurately 500' (even 450') can probably be counted on 1 hand. Being able to throw accurately 200' and really accurately 20' are shots needed a lot more, and are actually attainable by 90% of golfers. People who aren't blessed with natural talent like yours spend too much time striving for things they probably won't be able to do.

Anyway, yay long courses!  Swope Golf will probably get tweaked again. I'm still not happy with some of those holes.

When are we going to be seeing some workdays planned for the monument event?

How are you coming along with raising awareness, and more importantly sponsorship $$$ for the event.  Can you help by finding a couple of people to put in $50 business card ads in the program?  Tee sign sponsor, what can you do to help?  This is FAST approaching lets see some of what you want to do to help make KC ready for it's largest and longest running event!!

I am happy to announce that we are partnering with the Ramada Inn once again as our host hotel. If you know of people coming in to KC looking for a hotel at a good rate, you can let them know about the $69, double queen room they can get at the host hotel. Just tell them to ask for the KC Wide Open rate. Details are below.

Ramada Inn
1601 Universal Avenue
Kansas City, MO 64120
816-245-5500

$69 per night, Double Queen Room. Ask for the "KC Wide Open" rate.

For those who wish to sign up the old fashion way, we have a downloadable form you can print out (http://kcfdc.org/docs/2014KCWOregistration.pdf) and bring in to either DD or Disc Golf World.

You may also notice that the form mentions a flex start doubles at Water Works on Thursday from 8 am - 3 pm. Cash payouts for Open players and Prize payouts for Amateurs. $40 Pros - $30 Ams. Any division can be opened as long as we have 2 teams participating.

http://kcfdc.org/kcwo-volunteers-needed/ (http://kcfdc.org/kcwo-volunteers-needed/)

We need as many people at Blue Valley Saturday and Sunday as possible due to the tall grass on the sides of some of the fairways and also because of the nature of the long holes. Please help if you can. We want to give everyone the best experience as possible while playing and this is a great way to do it.

Off topic, but is DGA donating any Mach X baskets for the Wide Open?  They've provided them at the Memorial and at Steady Ed (not sure about Texas States).  How sweet would that be to have them?!  If we had to pick a course other than WW since it isn't being used this year, I'd say Swope!!!

Swope baskets were new as of 2009.  WW is in need of new baskets though and I did write a grant requesting those as well.  Swope needs a redesign and tee pads in that ORDER more than it needs to have new baskets.  That is a whole other story.  I do believe that there will be some baskets for the Wide Open....but those details will be given soon I am sure!

For the last few years, we have not had a "Flymart" night. We have always had the sponsoring vendors at Swope Park all day on Sunday lined up along hole 4. If you want to talk to me about getting in on that, you would need to contact me and we can work something out.

kcwideopen.com has a full schedule up.

As far as the B-Tier check in. You can either check in Thursday where you will be able to pick up your players pack and see the opening ceremonies or you can check in at Rosedale EARLY before your round and get your caddy book. You will need to attend the party Saturday night to get the rest of your players pack. Or on Sunday during the finals at Swope.

The "Full Schedule" indicates B Pool tees Friday at Swope at 9 AM, but the "B Pool (A Tier)" in blue  shows Friday SWOPE - 8 AM SHOTGUN.

I know it never hurts to be early, but I surely don't wanna 'bee late! Which is correct? ...and does anyone have a shotgun I can borrow  ???

Thanks for all YOU do!

9 am at swope.

Is this correct?

For Tuesday, 6/17 Swope League - the pins will be set for the KCWO but the OB lines may not be totally completed yet?

For Wednesday, 6/18 PDGA League - WyCo will be fully prepped as it is 48 hours before it is used for Round 1 on 6/20?

Save the date!
6-19-14, from 5 pm - 6 pm, when the PDGA hosts its NT Clinic at Swope Park. The best part? It's FREE!

Featuring:
•  2X World Champion Paige Pierce
•  3x SoCal Tour Series Champion Philo Brathwaite
•  13X Florida Tour Points Leader JohnE McCray

Immediately after that, head on over to the Swope Pavilion for the 7 pm Opening Ceremonies.

We are also still looking for great people in our community to help out as a volunteer. Let myself or Eric Kolkmeier know so we can get you out to a course to help out.

If I am not mistaken, Rosedale is currently set in these locations, as is Waterworks.  Can someone else confirm this?

Water works is for sure in those settings, and I believe Bob Ward was going to have them all set by last weekend as well. So my guess is yes they are all there and ready for practice.

Intermediate Division is currently FULL. We still have 2 spots left in Rec, and 1 spot left in Int Women. Also 3 spots available in Juniors Under 8. I would really like to see these spots filled by locals. If you know a women who wants to play, please tell her to sign up or contact me. Also, I would like at least 1 more Junior so if you have a kid who would like to play I would love to have them get signed up!

Curiosity question more than anything here.....Does this Ramada allow pets?  (I know, nothing a phone call can't cure)  Just curious, as I/we are figuring out our options.  8)

The NT MPO division is down to 3 spots. We will go to a wait list after that. Hopefully, we can add 8 more ladies to fill that pool.

After going through past statistics of Wide Opens through the years, I found that this is the largest MPO division we have had since 2003, in which there were 75. The following year was the first year of the National Tour. So that makes this the largest MPO turn out in KC Wide Open National Tour history.

Pretty cool.

Since we split the Pro Divisions up between the NT and the A Tier there has been a steady decline. I don't understand why to tell you the truth. We actually are able to pay out more money to Age based Pros by doing it this way, but I assume people want the accolades.

Looking at the caddy book right now...

Is the A Pool at WyCo Shotgun or Tee Times? Says two different things between the pools schedule page and the WyCo Map page-

EDIT: Found a couple more small things as well, par discrepancies and such.

Nice.  There will be an insert in all the caddy books with corrections.

A Pool will be on shotgun at WYCO and TEE TIMES AT BV.

I have a question about #9 at Wyco.  Caddy book shows the OB on left and right goes all the way to the road (straight ahead).  I just played there and it's painted OB short of the road.  It cuts in front of the the pin that is  straight ahead.  So is the caddy book wrong?  I get the OB on the left and right.  I don't understand it straight ahead when you have the road there.

SHAMELESS PLUG...

Want to know where those OB lines actually are at Wyco?
Come out to PDGA League Wednesday 6/18.  Sign up at 5:45, tee off as soon as cards are ready.

$5 + $1 non-club members + $1 optional ace fund (currently at $188, pays out 50%).  Our last paid ace was at Wyco.

I threw an absolute fantastic shot that was parked on other pin and was out of bounds.  I thought as long as I throw a straight shot I will be fine.  Guess not.   Stupid artificial ob.  Makes courses look gimmiky when it's unnecesary.  Wyco is a fantastic course and plenty difficult without it.

I played at Rosie today and the grass is getting out of control. It's above the ankles everywhere. Do you know if the city will be out to mow before this weekend? I had to look for a while for several discs that were out in the open so it will definitely slow the play down if it's not mowed.

If it's there, we are playing it.  It should all be there.  NT tournaments are to have the courses 'set' 48 hours in advance to when the course is used.

I'm more than just a little excited to play it with the OB.  Admittedly, on average, I play worse than the field, but I like the challenge.

Well the lines are painted right now but I don't know that the ropes will be up by then (Tracy?).

It's just a bit hard to see the paint far down the fairways. Would be tough for anyone that hasn't played it already.

When Kevin Zane and I were leaving, a park staff asked about the tournament.  He said they would be mowing all week trying to get caught up.  One of their main mowing tractors went down which put them behind especially at Rosie I'm sure.

Can anyone clarify the schedule for Pool C Advanced men? I am confused to where we are playing on Saturday, the KC Wide Open website says Blue Valley, but the caddy book says Wyco for Saturday and Sunday. Also, what is this business about groups? Sorry if this info is in plain sight somewhere, but I haven't been able to find it myself. Thanks!

Yes. The website is correct. The caddy book has some oversight, and there will be an amendment added to clear up any confusion.

Group 1 and 2 are on Tee Times at Blue Valley. Group 1 starts their rolling start at 8:00 am. Group 2 (C POOL) is off directly after the A Pool. You will need to check on line at kcwideopen.com or pdga.com to see what time you are scheduled to tee off. Hopefully that helps clear it up.

Can I get some Wyco clarrification on these:

7: Far beyond OB is the same line as 9 left side OB?

That should be correct.  The OB line doesn't change, and once a line is OB it is OB for the entire field.

9: There is OB beyond (inbetween basket and road) making it tighter than the road itself?

I believe that this was answered with this posting by the wonderful T-Dub
I have a question about #9 at Wyco.  Caddy book shows the OB on left and right goes all the way to the road (straight ahead).  I just played there and it's painted OB short of the road.  It cuts in front of the the pin that is  straight ahead.  So is the caddy book wrong?  I get the OB on the left and right.  I don't understand it straight ahead when you have the road there.

The caddy book shows the way I described to Dick several weeks ago how I would lay it out.  However, I forgot what I told him and laid it out in the slightly less forgiving formation as is painted. Dick has told me to fix it to match the caddy book.  It shall be done.

12: Does the OB line for left side of 13 come into play?

Yes once an OB line it OB the entire area for each existing and touching point.  Same as the early statement.  OB line's aren't OB for just one hole, they are for the entire course and other fairways come into play because of this, then they are OB.

17: Does the OB line for right side of 9 come into play for right side of 17?

Thanks.

Same answer on many of the questions.  Any OB line is OB for the course in this configuration.  Having the line be OB one part of the course and not the other is counter intuitive and will cause issues with everyone playing.  The goal on "defined OB" is to strengthen the toughness of the course and require better placement by the advance level playing field.  Thus "requiring" or FORCING a better shot selection and also increasing the risk/reward component.

I hope that this helps.

I assume it's the same case with the OB lines at Swope? Like one hole's line is also an OB line for another hole?

Example-

Swope Gold #9 (Normal #6) plays up towards the clubhouse, and the OB line for #10 (Normal #7)  is on the left side. I assume that line plays OB for #9 as well?

There are more examples.

All subsequent fairways lined with O.B. are also O.B. for you. So if you are in another persons fairway, you are o.b.

They don't.  There is an initial ratings and that is unofficial.  Once the event becomes official then the rating typically do drop a few points.  Each round played is the ratings, not the course.  It based entirely on the field playing that course during those times.  The ONLY time that it may be reviewed is when there are tee times and weather is a factor.  This is another reason that Tee-Times aren't the best for disc golf events.
