Post by: Scott A Reek on August 05, 2014, 12:57:37 PM
The Discraft Ace Race will once again happen in Kansas City at Swope Park on September 14th, 2014.  You will play two rounds of this Ace Race friendly course and it is a flex start from 9 until 4 (your second round has to be started no later than 4pm).  The cost is $25 (optional $5 Ace Pool) and you get two prototype discs and some swag from the picture below.  There will be some other side games taking place, including a chance to win a Discraft Chainstar.

More Information to come.  You can register at Dynamic Discs Kansas or Disc Golf World

The Discraft Ace Race is one month away and we want to break the 300 mark this year.  Last year we had the largest ace race in the country and this year we want to set a record.  This year the KCFDC is going to step it up and we are going to make this event even bigger, more fun and more prizes.  Help us out by pre registering so you dont miss out and we can make sure we order enough players packs for all to play.

What's the group allowable limit? Not asking about alcohol.

I am going to ask to keep groups to no more than 6.

There is no online registration as of now.  You can call 913-403-0710 and we can process over the phone if needed.

Scott, I've got a metal Costco basket you can use for the race. I just don't know if I can play...

In case anyone is wondering, it has been reinforced by welding the seams, and it has a second set of chains added to make it catch like a chainstar.

Who else has baskets?

I have to order the players packs for the Ace Race by Sept 2nd.  I will order extra but the only way to guarantee your spot and package is to pre register.  Pre registration also helps us figure out how many package we need to order.

How beginner friendly is this event?

Is it basically just take one shot then move on to the next hole?

Yes, one shot. If you hit metal or an ace, you get points. No putting, no approaches. Really fun.

And holes will be set super short.

Define "super short"

It's on my birthday and I might try to get my wife to come along too.  We're both beginners and I'm sure I can probably get the distance (if not the accuracy) but she's still working on distance.

Think about Swope. Cut the holes in half and add 9 more holes.

Another feature is that there are multiple baskets on many holes.  So you may have a pyramid of 3 or more baskets to throw at on one hole.

We've never played Swope.  When I said beginners, I meant it.  The only two courses we've played so far are the short Lenexa DGC at Sar Ko Par and Kanza Park down in Ottawa.

If either of us even hit a single basket during the Ace Race, we'd consider it a huge win for us.  But if she doesn't have the distance to even bother throwing, it's not much fun for her.

Thanks for the quick answers!

Very beginner friendly.  Especially with the new discs that they are giving out.  Should be easy for beginners.

It is also a very laid back tournament.  Mostly about having fun.  It was the first tournament I ever played.  It was also the first disc I ever owned.

The Discraft Ace Race is just a few days away.  This is going to be a bigger and badder Ace Race than we have seen in the past.  We will have prizes, a raffle for a Discraft Chainstar and many other prizes, Drinks, DJ Twiggy will be on site to provide us some music.

Players packs have been ordered but your pre registration will still secure your spot.  Whether you are going or not, help us spread the word about this event and lets get to the 300 mark!!

Mitch, I haven't played the Ace Race here, but I took my son to play the one in Lawrence last month. I was told that one was set fairly long relative to most Ace Races, and a lot of the holes were uphill, making the distance even more challenging.  As a result, there were really only 3 holes out of the 18 (6 throws total since we played the course twice) where he had enough distance to actually reach the basket.  That was a disappointment, but the truth is he still had a great time. He got one metal hit and was stoked about it.  Plus he got to take home two discs and a bunch of other goodies.

I've been told the Swope Ace Race is set short enough that "anyone" has a realistic chance to get some hits.  I'm taking him in the hopes that it's true.  Hope we'll see you all there!

If you have a basket that we can use for the Ace Race, you can bring it to DDKC or if you bring on the day of the event, I will need to have by 8am so i can get out on the course.  If you have a basket we can use for the event, please send me a PM, so I can get a count.

Thanks for the help in advance

I suggest putting your name on the bag, your basket and stand so everything goes back the way it came if bringing baskets.

Also, I noticed the start is 9am.  Do we have to start that early with the flex start? I have something in the morning to do beforehand and not sure when I'd get done.

Sweet!  I'm on that list!  Pick up at DDKC as well?

My brother-in-law came along and played with me.  We had a great time.  It was his first time throwing a disc golf disc and it very quickly humbled him.  But he's ready to learn how to play better now.
