Can you give a few more details about the tournament?
Cost? How many rounds? Divisions? Is it going to be different than a normal tournament?
It sounds fun, but I am sure it will sound a whole lot more fun if I know what is going on :)

2 rounds...one disc..one throw..if you don't hit basket or ace..u pick up and move the next hole.  Scoring is a points based.  3 points for aces and 1 point for metal.  All holes will be within 180 to 250 feet.   Entry fee will be $25 with a big boy ace fund (prob $10) but not mandatory.

more info can be found at www.discgolfacerace.com

Anyway to get the local calendar, the one on kcfdc.org updated?
Should probably include:
Lion’s Den at Cliff Drive on August 22
Ace Race at Swope on September 12
City of Fountains?
KCFDC Championships ?
Rosedale Amateur Championships

These items should be covered in the next EC meeting.  I just asked about them as well.  Also if there was going to be an Olathe open or Big O this year as well.  We still haven't seen the K-7 Corridor Clash yet either.....or the new pad travels (SM and CD).

Looking for volunteers to run some events as well....so if interested PM me.

Can anyone play? I dont think I have a great chance to win but I would like to compete. Its worth the cash for me to meet some people and get a little competition play.

I am assuming we are required to throw prototype Discraft discs that are offered in a players pack like what was stated on the site.
Definition of metal would be basket on up. Correct?
The players pack looks sweet.
Looks like grand prize is a bag and 10 premiums or a similarity thereof.

So why not Down Under?

Are any of these tournaments PDGA sanctioned? I haven't seen anything on their tournament board. I am just asking because I am wanting to make sure I get my money's worth for Joining up this year. So far I have only played in 1 PDGA tourney.

I would be nice to have a few tournaments in October or even Nov. I don't mind playing in some cold weather. I am willing to help out with getting something rolling.

Anthony, remember that Worlds took priority over everything this year in KC.  There have been several tournaments within 3 hours drive--Columbia, Emporia, Topeka, Miami OK,  Lamoni, Des Moines--so it's really YOUR fault, you bagger.

So why not Down Under?

All the trees in the middle of the fairways will block the ace runs dude.

After running several of these, I've learned... The shorter the holes are, the better.  If they are too long, you won't have any aces.  It's more exciting when mulitple aces are hit.

yes emarsh...this tourney IS DESIGNED to bring out many of the rec players that normally wouldn't play in a tourney due to various factors...EVERYONE IS WELCOME!  Jrs., Srs, Pros, Ams, whoever.  The length of the holes are mandated by Discraft and WILL be between 180 adn 250..probably closer to the 180 to 220.  Eric K and i will be planning a config that will GIVE EVERYONE AN EQUAL opportunity to bang da chains!

Glover...yes must use the Discraft proto discs included in the players packs.  Down under would be good for some of the holes but as keizer stated..some like # 1 are just to tree filled.  AND SWOPE IS SUCH A GOOD VENUE FOR tourney's like this.

they need to be short too, as the ace race disc for this year is a putter (i think).

This event should be held at William Yates Elementary. If ever there was a perfect venue for this type of contest, it's Yates.
Title: Re: KC's FIRST EVER ACE RACE!!!!

Tim may be thinking of the # of people wanting to play and making it easy from players meeting to tee. So in that respect I agree. It sounds like you are planning on putting in temp placements?
I have yet to play Yates but hear that would be a great place too without knowing the ease of which to have a large event there.

Just say no to Yates for this event!  Tournaments need adult beverages, and they're off limits at Yates!

I think a variety is good.  A couple of longer holes is OK.  But I would say you would want them to average around 180, which means several holes under that.  Even shorter if you are playing through trees.

Just an opinion- I'd say if the disc is a putter type, make the holes really short using the Down Under or another course with some trees.  Talking 150' shots or less.  You could mix it up with some alt tees the 2nd round that way every hole is different.

Yeah, forgot about the beer thing. That really sucks we couldn't get a special permit or something, because that course would really be the perfect Ace Race course.
Title: Re: KC's FIRST EVER ACE RACE!!!!
Post by: Timko on August 05, 2009, 02:33:49 PM
Do you plan on flagging shorter tees with the baskets at Swope, or moving the baskets?  I don't know if it would be worthwhile to move all of the baskets, since there isn't a hole out there that would play short enough for the Ace Race.  We could also have 2 baskets on a hole (1 flag, 1 red) which would enable you to play 2 holes in a shorter span of time, and hopefully reducing the amount of walking needed to play 18 holes.

Timko..yeah we planned on flaggin shorter tees when needed.  I do like your idea of two holes per hole..lol.. Eric and i are meeting this week to discuss...thanks for your input.

Temp placements will take ALOT of planning to attaining extra baskets. If there is not a layout plan yet, I suggest getting the word out to get as many baskets as you can and go from there to see what you can do with what you got.
If there is a way to make 2 courses, that would be a way to accomodate more players.
I've got several newbies wanting in on this one.
I foresee this being one of our top draw events in the future.

Hey y'all,
Thanks so much for the input from everyone. Tim and I have talked at length about the who, what, when, where, how and feel pretty good about this event. We will definitely pull from Slim, Timco, and Dan Cashen for their ideas on setting up an Ace Race course. Additionally, there will be field events between the two rounds i.e. Putting comp, Maximum Time Aloft, Longest/most accurate drive, etc. Tim and I want to make this fun, with lots of good ace runs, music, friends, and lots of prizes.

I am stoked to see this much interest in this already. The past Ace race prototype discs have been awesome. Perhaps you throw a Zone? It was proto two years ago. Last year's was killer before I lost it Down Under (I called it Buzz Jr.)For everyone with ideas on how to do this, we appreciate the positive. :) Details to come on Reg. and course layout. Remember, Most Fun Wins!

Keep in mind that Swope has 9 red baskets and a ton of pin placements.  So while it does take some planning, it's not really that hard to set up.

AWESOME. I love MTA. Are you planning on setting up the wooden square with a sheet and shoot from stations. THAT WAS FUN TOO!

Rick, I hope you have a broken in MTA disc. I would gladly pay for using it.

Possibly a mini course???
Might as well have a huge blowout celebrating how great we are!!!
I would be in for donating for a keg.

Me and CD had a great time doing MTA. I was 2nd I think
My wheels aren't as mobile as they used to be but I'll give it a shot.

This years ace race disc is a discraft Wizard... not really what it is called, but it sure feels and looks like one to me.  The pro d ones even feel and smell (yes... smell) like a wizard.  Almost identical mold.  Haven't thrown one but assume they fly similar.  I was told it is a challenger bottom and a magnet top... creating... a WIZARD!  Last years was a smaller diameter buzzz... not as much carry and a little more stable.  They haven't run them production yet... not sure why.  I still have some from last year if anyone wants any.  I would suggest not using the teepads at whichever course you play, just put temp teepads marked with flags between 80 (more technical shots) and 175 (more open).  Wouldn't get too much longer than that since it is a putter, and you want to make sure everyone should be able to reach it.  Just my .02.  Either way, these are a lot of fun for everyone, and fast pace, which will get you finished with plenty of time for extracurricular activities.

Can't wait to throw the Discraft Wiz, and yes that is the same description I have heard about it. Waiting on player packs now. :o

How many players will you allow? I could see groups of five or six being no problem as this should play really quick with one shot per hole, no distractions while putting, and no, err, very few lost discs.

Are the Field Events included in the standard entry fee?
• MTA
• Accuracy/Long Drive
• CTP
• Ring of Fire
• "Big Boy" Ace Fund

CD,

yes Eric and I have discussed alloting 5-6 per hole...capping it at roughly 108.  So that's the number we are shooting for.  All field events EXCEPT the big boy ace fund are included in the entry fee.

The  big boy ace fun will most likely be an additional 10 per person.

Hey guys.
I will most likely be out of commision since I am having my right knee operated on the 14th.
Go ahead and sell my spot but I will still take my players pack please.
I'll probably still be there to drink a few suds.

i had high expectations of getting lucky and hitting an ace during this-then Leo told me at Pleasant Hill league that he hit 4 ACES at the Topeka Ace Race last week, which was good for........2nd Place :o  he stated some guy hit 5 aces, and that Marshall had 3 CONSECUTIVE aces.  if you had 36 throws, then you only needed to hit an ace 14% of the time to win the Topeka Ace Race.....my expectations for victory have plummeted, but the tourney format and extras (ie. beer, beer, and more beer) still have me very excited for this event ;D

That is the most I've ever heard of.  How short were they?  Obviously, the recommended 180-240 won't work well with a putter.

I asked him that as well, and he told me they averaged about 200'...I'm sure he can elaborate if he sees this post.  I remember the last time I hit four 200' shots with a putter in 2 rounds....wait a minute...nevermind.....

This is guerilla marketing at its best.  You HAVE to use a new model Discraft disc?  The genius who thought of this should be enshrined in the advertising hall of fame!

Bob,  yes this is marketing gold..Not a big fan of only using those discs but it's part of the deal.  You will, however, be able to use any disc you want for the MTA and ring of fire contest.

Discraft is making bank on these things but i really like the concept of the ace race and i'm sure it will be a blast.

Tim, Timko, and I laid out the Ace Race course today, and it is flippin fun. There are a couple of holes at 200, most about 140 -110, a few even shorter but all with some challenge. It's a Safari Ace Race for sure. I think we settled on 21 holes, so you get three extra shots at points and/or cash (for those in the optional ace pool). Can't wait, gonna be fun 8)  Oh yeah, the lay out includes some stacked baskets, a hanging basket, and surprises to come ::)

It's when you use a tee pad for a basket that it doesn't belong to.  Like throwing from hole 1's tee pad to 4's basket at Rosedale.

I think we are using 3/4 of the teepads out there.  Most of them will tee from grass.  There will be at least 4 (?) temp baskets used as well.

Even better, try Rosedale #1 (or #2) to #3. Stray from the intended flight path and you'll see where the "safari" part comes in. Come out New Year's Day and you may have the chance to play backwards! Temporary pads basically basket-to-basket backwards. #18 to #17, #17 to #16 (birdie opp). Picture it if you can - there's some tuff shots, and some gimmies you better get!

It's like a Wizard.  The name of the disc is Focus.  It's now PDGA approved.

Pretty much.

The majority of the Ace Race holes are in the 120' range I think.  There's one that will be 230'-240,' and then there are some long approach shots (80').  We tried to create holes that can be reached by an average arm with a putter.  That being said, I don't know if most folks know HOW to throw a putter 200', but I guess we'll find out. :)
Title: Re: KC's FIRST EVER ACE RACE!!!!

Like I said, the vast majority of the shots are under 150'.  So that's the range you need to get good at.
Title: Re: KC's FIRST EVER ACE RACE!!!!

It is a fairly stable putter though so you should be able to get it that far without it getting too squirly.  What was that birdies name dick?  IF it's true, they already started... hope it aint true though.  If so, hope you guys like stable, stabler, and stablest.

Yep. Just like I figured.
My knee is not going to be ready by this weekend to play. I just hope I can get around enough to make it out to pick up my players pack and drink a few suds with you guys.
This one sounded like lots of fun too darn it.
The end result was my maniscus was damaged on both sides plus I had some cartilage damage.
I may be ready to play in a few months.
Like I suggested, go ahead and sell my spot Eric and Tim.

Andy, you can pick up you player's pack starting at 9:00. As far as choice goes, it's one ESP and one D first come, first serve.
Glover, Glad to hear you can make it out even of for just suds and plastic, next time for sure. Get that knee back in shape!
everyone else, I am flippin' stoked about this! I am working on your maps right now. Thanks Dick and Timco. Big thanks to Tim Becks for doing the leg work while I have been working like a dog (the life of adjunct faculty...). Tyrone showing up to spin the wheels o steel too.
So show up, get a group together, and run 'em. Two reminders: we will have a big boy ace fund of ten greenbacks to be split by the number of aces, and while we will provide beverages, (thanks to Gomers and  VitaminWater) we will not have any food (no budget for it), so you might wanna bring a snack  :P

Since you are so interested, James, Ace #5 was last September # 8 Down Under......you are probably safe right behind the longer baskets, but if you want to stand 100' away from me Saturday I could probably at least give you a good scare 8)  Plus I will be drinking, so my lines will probably be way off, meaning that my normally bad lines should be dead on target...PLUS you will be WAY EASIER to hit than those short little baskets

The course is awesome! We played some of it tonight while flagging and marking the holes. I hit chains once and stuck one from about 180 feet out (Timko said something about it being one of the harder shots  ;)). The disc is faster than the Wizard, not as stable, but flies very true. Just took a couple throws to get the feel for it. We overthrew a couple without trying to hard, so I think everyone has a chance at hitting an ace.

My buddy luke henry hit the hanging basket on the very first throw of the 2nd round, we watched timko hit one, andy lewis hit one, i heard jack lowe hit one on the last throw of the tourney.....and there were probably 1-2 more i am missing.....tons of metal hits (except for matt HUMBLE who hit nothin but air all day) :o

Yeah Mike "BEATLE" Bailey won the event with 2 aces...both in the 2nd round...Cashen, Timko, Andy Lewis, Jack, and several others (sorry can't tink of em rite now) hit one ace a piece.

There were 9 aces all together ..2 of which were NOT in the ace fund so the other 7 took home $55 a piece.

Beatle was the big winner of the day taking home 2/7 ths of the ace fund and the grand prize of 10 premium Discraft discs and a bag.

THANKS to all whoe particpated in this event.  W/O the playas it would not have been the success it was.

KC DISC GOLF ROCKS!

BTW I want to say a big thanks to:  SLIM JIM Neal ( a HUGE thanks for taking care of the generator), Rick and Disc Golf World, EMAN for co-TDing, CD for donations, Vita Water for the cases of water, Pete Engleman (as usual..the guy is TOP NOTCH), Tyronne for spinn' the records, Ryan and Jon for running the MTA contest, anyone else i'm forgetting, and all the PLAYAS...

Tim and EMan - great time!!! can't wait for the next one!

Greatest throw catch of the day that got him nothing - Joe E while warming up for the MTA!
The disc had to be airborne for at least 10 seconds, then he lays out for a diving one handed catch in the outfield!
It was crazy!

Dave, Joe did take home an Ultimate Disc for his awesome effort at MTA and retrieving discs during the distance shot.

And the final results on aces Mike Bailey*, Chris Timko*, Andy Lewis*, Jeremy Cranfill, Luke Henry*, Rick Rothstein, Pete Cashen*, Jack Lowe*, Tim Moeller, and yours truly, Eric Kolkmeier all hit aces on Saturday! We rock guys good job.  8) (* indicates Big bOy Ace fund)

A number of players hit metal 3 times, a few four times, and two, Dan Quinn and Crazy John, five times.

Yes, Thanks to all the players who made this awesome. This is just gonna get better, it was KC's first and now KC can make this better. As many of you have noted this doesn't need to be a Discraft event. So this may happen again sooner than you think. In short, everyone was positive, we had rave reviews on the course, and you guys made this so much fun.

A million thanks to everyone again!
Yes, big thanks to Jim Neil for making the generator hassle, less hassle for us. We owe you one, big time.

P.S. The only negative thing was someone, a disc golfer I presume, stole  my blue and white Mach Lite portable basket off the picnic table on hole 19. It conveniently disappeared after the second round was over. If anyone should hear of anything or see any posts on CraigsList, etc. please let me know. I have got the carrying case and the flag and would love to reunite them with the basket. Any info 816 510 0510, I can be as discreet or indiscreet as needed.

How would we do this as a non discraft event? Everybody gets to pick 1 or 2 discs to throw, or just whatever they want to use?

I was thinking that a Glow Ace Race would be a blast.

That sucks about your basket getting stolen. I really hope it wasn't anybody at the event.
