Title: FREE: Freshwater Cichlid Fish
Post by: CD on August 31, 2010, 09:30:20 AM
A co-worker of mine is moving to the east coast and has three freshwater Cichlids that need a home:

The jewel cichlid is really quite beautiful, and I'm not sure just what the convicts did to earn their name - although cichlids are somewhat aggressive and they already ate the smaller of the jewel cichlids.

Aquarium is not included. PM me if interested.

p.s. They're waaay too small to eat, but could be used as bait  :o

CD, I hope you don't mind some additional info.  I'm a bit of an aquarium hobbyist.

FYI... these are both pretty aggressive species of fish.  Especially the males.  But the larger the tank, the better off they'll do with other fish.  If you put them in a tank < 55 gal. or so with other fish, they'll fight relentlessly.  If the other fish are smaller, they'll be dead, or at the least their fins will be shredded before long.

But both are pretty neat fish to have on their own.  They'd be fine with others in a big enough tank.  The jewel cichlid can get really beautiful with good tank conditions.  Convicts get their name because of the black stripes on their sides.  Convicts are diggers too, they'll rearrange your tank if they don't like the layout.  If the Convicts have paired though, then look out, they can be real monsters.  They're twice as mean once they've paired up, and will constantly fight anything else in the tank.

They're both pretty easy to care for.  And they'll eat just about any type of fish food.  Both are pretty hardy.

Well, with a nickname like "Fish" I tend to trust your judgment  :)

The Convicts are both female, and the Jewel is unknown.

I've also got a couple fish I'd give away too if there's interest...

I've got 1 orange parrot fish (http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/cichlid/blparrot.php), about 3"+, that could use a good home.  Pic (http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/2481/bloodparrotwfciamacf152.jpg)

Also 1 albino African cichlid, about 2.5".  Pic (http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/262/kribalbino002web6050614.jpg)

The parrot fish is kind of a goofball fish.  Sort of clumsy and curious.  Very social.  Parrot fish aren't really aggressive unless they're with other male parrot fish in a small space.  It's hilarious to watch them eat too.

The albino cichlid won't get very big.  He's starting to develop some orange/red color in the tail, and like most fish, it will get more color as it ages.  Bright red eyes.  It's a mildly aggressive species, but I've never seen him fight with any other fish.  Quite an appetite.

Both are in an aquarium that's getting crowded, and I have some special order fish on the way I need to make room for.

Feel free to PM me as well.

Ironically, my user name comes from my last name... Fishback.  The aquarium hobby is just a coincidence..
