Title: Kansas City Flying Disc Club Championships - Oct. 15-16, 2011
Post by: dickthediscparker on September 24, 2011, 05:40:31 PM
I just wanted to remind everyone that we will be playing, once again, to find out who is  the bestest of the bestest in Kansas City.  I will have a flyer up soon with more details.   Just remember... You MUST be a current KCFDC Member to play in ANY PART of this event.  You may sign up with your local League Director, or at Disc Golf World, OR the day of the event.

Thanks,

Dick

Are you going to have the OB  set-up on WYCO?
If so will 13 be split up like last year?

Some people only play one day or however many rounds they decide to play.

That is the same weekend as Yonder Mountain String Band's Harvest Festival in Arkansas.  I think I'll play the little 9 hole course at Mulberry Mountain.  :-)

How are the courses to be used decided?

I'd like to see only two corses used. One on Saturday and one on Sunday. Maybe Wyco (short w/ no painted OB's ) Saturday and Swope (medium length) on  Sunday, or WW, or PC, or SMP, or Rosey, or BV, or Wibur Young, or P-hill....

More importantly, will there be beer?

No need to discuss courses. That has basically been decided.  I am just finalizing a flyer.  I will have the info up soon and you can cry and whimper then. :)

How was it decided? At the board meeting?

If we don't like the setup, we won't cry, we will make our own flyer and have our own club championships.  :P

I know what you are thinking... East VS West?  Is this a competition between Kansas and Missouri?  NO.  It just made for a cool flyer and I am using two East courses and two West Courses.  Sorry for the confusion.

And we all know that (your state here) is the best anyway :).

So to recap in case of error on the flyer.

Round 1 - Young Park 10am
Round 2 - Cliff Drive TBA

Round 3 - WYCO 10am
Round 4 - Rosedale TBA

Remember, you can play any round you want, but if you want to get the best bag tag possible or a chance to win a trophy, you must play all 4 rounds.

do you need to be a paid 2012 member to get a 2012 tag?

You will need to be current to prepay for your tag. Though you should re-up your membership through 2012 if you intend to buy a tag.   Though you bring up a good loophole in which now I will need to close.  Everyone thank Jamie.

Its a 2 dayer, really????

Club championships have always been two days here, and for good reason. It determines the champion of the club, so it should be more rigorous.

Usually, we've played one round at each course. For this event, I think that's good. I'm normally a proponent of getting a second chance at playing a course, but in this tournament everyone should know the courses fairly well. I think the course selection sounds good. I was going to recommend that Young be one of the courses, if anyone asked. Otherwise, I think the choices are ok. Only one of the big 3 is used (Rosey, not WW or Swope), and Wyco is a good call also, as who knows how long that course will still be around.  3 newer courses with 1 of the old standbys, and a good mix of tighter and more open.

Painted ob = weak

There are many reasons that isn't true, not the least of which is that we don't have the money to reshape our land entirely like ball golf designers do. How is a painted line any different than the road or sidewalk which we all intuitively believe is O.B.?

The painted lines are different because a sidewalk or road is pretty much a permanent feature. The sidewalks and roads aren't payed for with $ from the club treasury, and don't require club volunteer time that could perhaps be used doing something more significant to improve the course, such as poison ivy erradication or landscaping.

That being said, I do think the funny little lines painted on the ground do add some interest to somewhat boring holes.

Well said Tom.  Painted lines are like Mando's.  They show poor course design and emphasize how weak a course really is.  I think Wyco and PC are good courses without the lines and don't need them to be interesting.  I also think they make the sport look gimmicky like a putt putt green at a pga event.  And here's Phil Mickelson with a 20 footer for the win.  He only has to miss the blades of the windmill and squeeze between those two rocks.  If he ricochets it off the back wall, I think he can make it.  Hard to take a sport like that seriously.

Well, I don't agree and at least 2 of the 72 holes you will play will have them.  The other 70 holes will have windmills, roller ramps, and at least one peace sign.

I hope everyone comes out to play.   There may just be a best costume contest too.

Ok, ok, ok, the ob may have made those holes a little more interesting.

BUT, Felt like the split fairway was super weak. Island green was fun even though i've never hit it, just seemed like the split fairway took away an opportunity for someone to be aggresive, since the second one wasn't reachable. Stiff headwinds i think at the time. Just one sandbaggers opinion. It won't matter, when the round starts i'm just gonna go ahead and draw 2 circles over my box on the scorecard for 13. Last 3 rounds on that hole with painted ob, 6 circles = super weak.

Do what you want Dick! And thank you for stepping up! Paint it all up...and I'll do my best to make a decent shot and not whine but if I do, it will be because I didn't execute, not because you made the course challenging. ;D

I'm in...Coop, if Dick is too busy, you and me will get something going on Saturday morning for all who want in.  We could do $5 per round, and an additional $20 for all four. That way players that aren't playing all weekend could get in on individual rounds.

And additional "birdies for best poker hand" will be going down on my card    8)

I was shocked that I appeared to land head over heels on dirt free of debris.....I checked it out pretty good.....why  I fell was my shoestring got stuck in a tree branch, and my momentum took me forward and I couldn't stop.

I thought to myself, this is how I am going to die.  I am going to fall off the cliff at Cliff Drive......and its because of these silly shoes.....

Pete had said he wasn't a fan of the shoes, when asked why, he said he didn't care for the laces........that was on hole #3..... ???

if it will save your life don't be ashamed to go with a velcro retention system for your shoes jack.

Thanks for saving my disc on the hillside.  I am glad your fall was not caused by stepping and slipping on my disc.  Death by disc slippage at Cliff would be a terrible way to go.  Especially when  you are retieving discs from all the chuckers who threw down the hill.

Lucked out on the weather, pretty sweet all weekend.

Thanks for all the work everyone put in on this, everything went really well.

Felt the ob lines at wyco were completely fair. That opinion is in no way influenced by my spotless record on them sunday.

I guess i kind of earned and lost a nickname in the same weekend. Rest in Peace old buddy Ziploc. Time to move on up to the big time. Yep folks Lee is making his big move to the bottom card of the open division. Hung with some pretty good players this weekend, how much harder can it be with lots of cash on the line ::) Only a few years til masters eligibility rolls around anyway ;D.

Was a crapload of fun for a free tourney. Lots of freebies and ctps were given out too. I got a sweet dynamic discs buzz for winning the last ctp throw off. I was towards the end and watched someone hit the basket a few throws before me on a similar line i like. I had just got done slamming 2 beers and was feelin real good. I won the ace pot throw off last week at the RAC on a total lay up. I told myself I'm not &^*%ing layin up here. May have only won a disc on that shot, but just the moment itself was pretty freakin sweet.

And the record was set for biggest turnout
Good Show KCFDC

It was a great time. And for the record. I did worse at WYCO... a 65. And better at Rosie... a 51. Just in case I have to live those scores down in the future.

Congrats to Tank.

Good call Lee! You'll be whippin' on them boys. I heard the Ziploc thing and about fell out. If we can't use it on you we'll find someone worthy. That's just too good not to use.

Thanks Dick and all others involved. A great weekend and event.

If you ask me, Shaggy and Ziploc can almost be used interchangeably. Why shed older nicknames when you can add a nickname?

Jack, blaming Pete for his mishap. Or perhaps failing to heed Pete's advice.
