Title: Kansas City Ice Bowl 2012- 25th Annual
Post by: Rick Rothstein on December 14, 2011, 04:17:09 PM
Registration for Kansas City's 25th Annual Ice Bowl is now open at Disc Golf World. You can download an entry form and a pledge sheet here: http://kcfdc.org/docs/kcib12reg-pledge.pdf. Pre-registering is always a good thing and most appreciated.

The Pledge Sheet is something new for this year. Hopefully, many Ice Bowl participants will ask their friends and family to help out by pledging money for each hole they play at Ice Bowl. In addition to supporting our long-time charity, Bishop Sullivan Center, we are also raising funds for Harvesters—the Community Food Network. Our goal for 2012 is $4000, which is about $1000 more from 2011.

As always, Ice Bowl is more about fun and charity than competition. However, the overall winner gets to keep the Ice Bowl traveling trophy for one year. Our current Ice Bowl champ is Leo DaPrato. Also for those who play the final nine, the winner of each card with the best 27-hole score will win a DX disc.

Similar to the way it was run last year, we'll have two shotgun starts on Saturday, January 28—at 10 am and 1:30 pm on the top course. We'll run a maximum of 108 (18 groups of 6) each round. We'll strive to accommodate all "I-want-to-play-with-someone-specific" requests. This year you can purchase and use mulligans on Saturday as well as Sunday. If there are fewer than 108 players for the afternoon round, people who played in the morning may play a second round for a $5 donation and use the better score for final-nine placement.

Sunday, January 29 will be the traditional Ice Bowl Celebration featuring pick-your-time-with-your-own-group rounds on either course teeing off from 8-10. The closest-to-the-hole contest will conclude around 2 pm. Lunch, which is provided by players bringing chili for the Chili Contest and other munchables to share begins at noon. The final nine hole round tees off around 2:30. To play the final round for a prize, you must have played one round on Saturday or Sunday morning.

We're looking for a person or a team of people who will work with me but will take responsibility for the lunch and the chili contest. This includes finding a generator or generators to power 30-40 crocks of chili, securing bowls and utensils, securing soft drinks, and suggesting or securing a cool prize for the Chili Contest winner. The KCFDC is producing this event and will pay for the what needs to be paid for.

Please consider donating a prize for the Closest-To-The-Pin Contest. This might be a gift certificate from your favorite restaurant or watering hole or some other business; disc golf goodies; movie or sporting event tickets; etc. It's a great place to re-gift those less-than-satisfying Christmas gifts!

If you want to help staff the event on either or both days, donate a prize, bring some chili or other food, please give me a call at 816.471.3472 or 816.914.0094 or shoot an email to rick@discgolfworld.com. Look for updates out here.

One more thing: here is link to a full-color KC Ice Bowl flier: http://kcfdc.org/docs/kcib12poster.pdf. Please post this wherever disc golfers or potential disc golfers gather.

As the first to register, I can at least guarantee I'll be first at something this year.

We are two weeks away from the 25th KC Ice Bowl, and we have a generator thanks to Glover. We have bowls, utensils, and napkins thanks to Hal. The club is taking care of drinks and the miscellaneous. Yours truly is going to head up the food portion of the event, but we still need somethings. First, crocks of chili! In the past years I have tasted quite the variety of chili from smoked everything to a green curry chicken chili. Bring out your chili, and we will have the rest. I am also looking for some judges with discerning palates  :D ;D Send me a message if you would like to volunteer your taste buds and subjectivity to chili and a good cause.

Which do you need more....chili or judges?  I can do either.  Was planning on bringing chili, but if you need a judge more, I'll help out with that instead.

In all fairness a judge should never be in the contest.

I won't be attending this year, but will do what I can to help us reach our charitable goal. Is there an Ice Bowl Buzzz this year, Rick? If so, please set one aside for me and I'll swing the store by this week.

Kelly,
I missed your post earlier, but to answer the club provides cheese, crackers, and usually Fritos as well. However, any food items you would like to contribute are always welcome. Our IceBowl doesn't collect food for a pantry, but instead gives cash to pantries. However, we do collect food to feed hungry disc golfers on what may be a cold day after all. Who knows around here though.

CHILI! CHILI! CHILI! CHILE! CHILLY! CHILI!

Prizes for the CTP contest, so far, include a two-tone PDGA bag, a wooden rocking horse, some gift cards for Mongolian Grill, a starter bag and some discs. Looking for more prizes, as we want more winners.

I am working on a Hockey Package of tickets for the Tuesday February 7th game against Rapid City.  There will be at a minimum probably 16 tickets that we will be giving away to the Missouri Mavericks, hopefully closer to 20.  I am also working on having about 4-6 of us go on the ice during Warm-ups and sit on the bench and watch them warm up.  Its a pretty good time folks, and if we have a big enough group of us to go will be an aabsolute blast!

I also got 2 Car Washes from VIP that I will be bringing to the event!

So I am starting to plan the Chili that I am making and winning again this year is my goal.  Who else is bringing their special Chili, now that we have a good generator (Thanks Glover!!) who else is doing that?  I mean I know that I am great on the Chili cook, but the masses of people need to be fed, and not everyone will be able to handle my chili, well ok everyone could, but then other people couldn't brag about how they got beat by me so closely.......so I guess I understand if you are not going to be out there on Sunday to lose your family recipie to my as yet to be named chili will clearly be the winnner! ;D

I am in on bringing chili and trying to place again. Last year my chili tied for second or third.  The funny thing was that i forgot about making it and realized that late Saturday night after going out.  I had to grab random items from the cabinet ie, chicken in a can, two pork tenderloins in the freezer, black beans due to not having mexican chili beans, corn, etc and etc.  My wife stood there laughing and making fun of me that night but i ended up with the last laugh by placing.  Sometimes you get lucky by not having a family recipe.

Bring on that last minute chili folks, I dare ya!

I double dog dare ya!

I was an awesome judge, but I'll be at Columbia's 26th Annual Ice Bowl instead (and it's the only 26th annual Ice Bowl out there). Same day.

Good chili needs good color, some zing, and excellent flavor. And from past years, although there were some excellent chicken/white chilis at the contest, I don't ever remember one of those placing very well. Just a hint. Good luck.

In Texas, they say "If you know beans about chili, you know chili ain't got no beans."

I don't necessarily agree with that, but I do think chili should be restricted to a foundation of tomato-based sauce, red meat, and chili spices. Anything else that is added would be purely for flavor variety and artistic flair.

It really wouldn't hurt to insert some rules and guidelines into the Ice Bowl chili contest. Some of the crazy concoctions I've seen would be akin to cooking with a microwave at a BBQ contest, or entering a cat in a dog show, or allowing men to enter the Miss America pageant.

Originally, there were no beans in chili either.  ???  Just pork.  :D

MR. FREAKIN RULE BOOK.....GAAAHHHH...JUST GET A SPOON IN YOUR MOUTH SO YOU SHUT THE "F" UP!  ;D ;D ;D

DON'T FORGET THE HERSHEY CHOCOLATE BAR IN YOUR CHILI!  THAT IS THE ONLY SECRET I WILL REVEAL RIGHT NOW.

I'm sure the Hershey Highway is one you travel down quite often. If there's anything chocolate in my chili, it will be Mexican hot cocoa wafers. But you won't have to worry about any of that, as I'll be at work that day, talking sh1t on the message board instead.

Allow me to interrupt this oh-so-brilliant discussion about Texan beans, to report that preregistration has reached a record smashing 197 players. There are 68 in the morning round and 66 in the afternoon round.

If anyone has a Scorepointe or knows where the Club's are, we need them for Sunday.

If you have something to say, say it. If not, the truth-in-jest is getting old.

Sure is a lot of concern you have over meaningless internet banter. From now on, I'll expect you to withhold your opinion when it comes to hockey, Jack, ya know, since you don't actually play.;)

197 pre-registered? That's awesome.

It wouldn't hurt to make sure we have enough. There are several already bringing them but if it's there and not needed it's better than needed and not there.

Not totally sure how many people played today, but 200 is pretty close. We had 240 pre-registrations going in to today and signed up close to another 90 to 100 today. Right now, we have 150 people indicating they will be playing the final round. We might be on our way to setting a new Ice Bowl attendance record...we count 407 in 2010.

Here's what happens tomorrow.

You can sign up from 8 to 10. If you've prepaid, check in and get your scorecard and purchase mulligans. Find a group of no more than 5 people and play either the top course or Down Under. If you start your round no later than 10 am, you should be done in time for lunch and the CTP Contest. We'll start eating around 11:30 and the CTP contest will begin around then also. We've got some nice prices lined up for CTP winners: a Traveler Basket, a 100 gift certificate at Carmen's Restaurant, a Scepter from Whirled Disc Sports, a Deluxe two-tone PDGA Bag, some Maverick Tickers, a $35 gift certificate from DGW, and some other stuff. Feel free to bring something to donate.

Time to call it a day.

See everyone tomorrow.

Thanks to Disc Golf World for putting on an excellent event!  I had a blast hanging out and playing a couple of rounds on a beautiful January day.  I think there was great organization, and support thru the entire event.

Your CTP attempts were astonishingly good under the circumstances. Lots of fun out there yesterday, some had more of it that others it seems.   8)

I couldn't believe you did so much drinking in so little time.  I'm really happy that you came out okay, and got to finish the 9 holes.  Hope the tylenol and orange juice helped a little bit w/your hangover today.

Still sorting through the paperwork, but it looks like we're tracking 441 people supporting KC's 25h IB. There were 346 people who posted a score. Will have a ball park figure on the donation, some scores, and acknowledgements tomorrow.

This was the most incredible Ice Bowl I've ever been part of. The KC disc golf community is awesome. Thanks to everyone who took part.

Had a great time, everyone that worked to make the event did a great job! Couldn't have asked for a nicer day, either.

Not really an Ice Bowl, though. More of a mild-temperature bowl.

Rick,

I don't know if everyone realizes that the guy working/running the KC Ice Bowl is also the guy responsible for the hundreds (or is it thousands?) of Ice Bowls that happen every year, all over the world. There are many people that will ask themselves someday, "did I do anything that made the world a better place?".  You will most assuredly be able to answer "yes I did".

Three cheers for Rick Rothstein, Ice Bowl Instigator. Hip Hip hurrah, hip hip hurrah, hip hip hurrah!

Not official yet, but it looks like we're going to have no less that a $7,000 donation, to be split equally between Harvesters and the Bishop Sullivan Center. Below are the people who made this donation possible. Here's the key to these numbers:

97: Non playing staff
98: People who I know were at the event. Some of them played rounds but didn't turn in scores. Others were hanging out.
99: I don't know if these people, all of whom preregistered, attended or not.

Empty stomach... Heart medication... Uncountable beer... Equals. Drunk Steve but a fun time...

Your CTP attempts were astonishingly good under the circumstances. Lots of fun out there yesterday, some had more of it that others it seems.   8)
I have pics of Steve throughout the day and a video of his CTP attempts.
I took alot of great pics. I'm just not smart enough to know how to share.
I had a Hell of a great time. Thanks to anybody that brought any type of cord for the generator. Especially the power strips. I would have looked dumb without the help since I only had 2 cords.
BTW I think 21 chili and 10 should have been the tie for first. Lee I want your recipe!!

I believe that 21 and 16 were the tying chili's, which was Lee's, and the winner Nick Davis in an official test tasting, where it was determined, that "the flavor, and the aftertaste have that of a thouroughbread Champ, it's your winner, it has a Champion's breed taste."

I believe that the names of the people that supplied the chili will be posted soon.  Remember folks it takes all of the great people in our community to take the time out of their life to make it more enjoyable for us to play.  Seeing 97 non-playing helpers, awesome.  Seeing the people helping, and really supporting the event, and following directions for the chili wait, even better.

My personal favorite though was #18 "Bar Chili" !!  One of the best stories of the Chili contest in Ice Bowl history if I had to say so myself.  Beats any of the concoctions that I have created.......what a hoot!

Had a great time throwing discs with everyone. I just really started playing last year with a bunch of other first timers. This was our first Tourney, if you don't count Lion's Den. We all had a blast and can't wait until Ram'N'Salmon!! Definately a disc golf addict!!

Here is a list of everyone who brought Chili. We thank you all. You can tell form the points is was a tight competition. As noted the tie was broken between 16 and 21.

I found it hilarious that Kevin and Tammy Montgomery's chili's had different scores. I gave them 2 different numbers due to them having more than one crockpot. The funny thing is they both had the same chili in them.
Now in the case of Jonathan Causey's 2 different numbers. The 2 containers of chili were not the same.
Just some info I thought I'd share.

Actually, even though they were both the same chili I think one crockpot got more liquid in it making it a bit soupier. Other than that, yes, same chili....  I thought that was kind of interesting too.

What were the final numbers for food/lbs and cash from KC?  St Louis had $4,000 and 1190# of food.

Sounds like I missed a great time, again.

$8000 and lots of chili, chips, and other goodies, including the best rum balls to date.  We're donating the money, but ate the food.
