Title: Pin Placements
Post by: jack on March 28, 2012, 09:59:43 AM
Updated October 3 2016--Mighty MO set UP (2016)

1-original
2-Short
3-Only
4-Rocks
5-Long
6-Long--ALTERNATE UBER LONG is also in place, but tough and probably not ready for Prime time.
7-Top of Key Hole
8-Trees
9-Only
10-Middle by tree line
11-SHORT
12-Only
13-LONG
14-Short
15-Under Tree
16-Short Strangler
17-Short
18-Long by road

(Someone stole the Orange one...noticed on 7/8/12....thieves suck)

At any time, feel free to alter your own configuration by playing to the following:
1-Practice Basket Black
8-Hangar
11-Practice Basket Maroon (Short placement)
16-Practice Basket Orange (18-Left, uphill, close to original) This is for you UBER long throwers, and now with the reservoir trees all knocked down, try to clear the gates baby!
18-Practice Basket Orange Blue Practice Basket is there now
HATE THIEVES!!!
Blue practice basket is in the long #18 between road and #11 pad.

You can make a fun alternate course without the need to work for it, just agree before you tee!

Thanks to Drew for the additional baskets out there to make this type of activity happen.

There are also the 2 new alternate holes in the woods to the north of the practice basket.  There are fly pads currently.  By using those two holes, you can opt to skip 13 & 14 and walk over to 15 if you want 18, or play 20, heck play 24 using all the alternates out there!

actually, i believe the orange pin on 16 is shorter than the white pin.  as the crow flies, really sure.  i measured the orange and white pins from the red pin last year before the wide open but i can't find where i wrote the orange one down.  orange possibly only on the wide open players' guide.

If I may be so bold...the fence w/o any trees is FUUUUGLY, especially the big ones.  Takes some doing to get a tree to survive, much more to get big.  Hopefully there's an awesome plan for the reservoir, cuz taking out ALL the trees damn sure didn't make the golfing better. :P
Title: Re: Pin Placements
Post by: jack on March 29, 2012, 11:59:44 AM
WTF.....really, those trees missing is a thing of beauty.  That is all concrete, and no place for trees.  The wrought iron fencing is a thing of beauty and the exposure of the fencing is about one of the coolest things to happen to the park since the disc golf course.

most of those "trees" were locust, and evasive plants that really harm the environment more than help it in terms of actual benefit to the ecosystem locally as well.

I think that you will find that you are in the minority on this idea that it was better to let them grow.

There have been ideas over the past 12 years for the reservoir, and I for one encourage more positive activity in the park, so anything that comes in should be viewed as a positive.  I will gladly re-design the course to live along side with other positive activities within the park.  In fact, I relish the chance to lose quite a few holes out there and come up with a new plan!

:-)

Don't take o-Fence   ::) on this, but this is something that has been needed very badly.  Drew did a lot of damage out there over the past few years, and his leaving made us feel that we had to continue to finish it.....but instead a local neighborhood action group took it upon themselves to move forward, and I feel it looks FREAKING FANTASTIC!
 ;D

My main point is; as a disc golfer, (the main purpose of this forum) the tree removal doesn't improve the CD experience for me.
If, in fact, they were/are locust, locust trees are a legume which means it is a nitrogen fixing species (pretty good for the soil), but certainly not good for the concrete and iron environment.
As I stated, if there is a plan for the reservoir, that's good and I would support it, move some holes, whatever.  And my minority opinion is still that partially cut stumps sticking out here and there is FUUUUUGLY  ;D ;D

now the option exists though to throw over the reservoir if you choose to....giving a different option that didn't exist.....

Hard to say what will go in.....

Is an idea that has been floated, to have races in there, and create a unique race oppt...

The fact that you care enough to complain/warrant discussion is good in my book.......
Now don't get real mad but some more trees came down today around hole #8 long placement......

Thanks  tree removal elves......if only I could find those stairs building elves for #6-#7...... ???

Get your elves to work on the honeysuckle; theres non-minority opinion.  And BTW, if they don't get rid of the stumps, those trees/shrubs are going to come back with a vengance.

I am going to move some of the pins this week, any thoughts out there from the folks?  Probably moving 2 long until the Lion's Den.....then possible ideas on my brain as follows....
1-short
2-long
4-long
7-middle

Those are what I am thinking, since it has only been on the Island for a little over a month, I figured I would keep it there for awhile...

Will do, but if people b%tch about #6 being short, I'm telling them it's all your fault. ;D

I've just never played it in that position. So thats my fault for being new the game I guess...just never played it. Any chance of putting a pin behind the fallen tree? Jack, is that hole being moved?

Nah, people just prefer the original, that's why it doesn't go short very often. I will move it so folks have a chance to try it out. And #6 isn't being moved, but do look for a super long pin placement in the near future.
Title: Re: Pin Placements
Post by: jack on December 06, 2012, 04:46:12 PM
There's a short placement on #6? Really? ???

The SUPER long on #6 is a go regardless of the design changes out there.  In fact it may go even longer than I had initially thought of, and will be set up hopefully with optional shot selections to get to it that will make it more challenging to even spot with people on your card! ;D
Title: Re: Pin Placements
Post by: Mike Hyzer on December 08, 2012, 01:55:42 PM
Well, sh1t. Not even Mother Nature likes #6 to be moved, as the lock shackle and pin are in a bind. But I did get #14 moved across the street. Had some cyclist ride by flipping his middle finger at me, then he goes "Get a helmet you disc golf b%tch!" :o

What's the status on the new holes going in at Cliff?
Title: Re: Pin Placements
Post by: jack on February 13, 2013, 09:06:17 AM
I am going to "try" to get out there on Saturday or Sunday this week to mark the first 2 new ones.

I am really having a hard time with the hole #6 extension and egress point more so than I really thought that I would when I was looking at it more and more this weekend.

The new "cliff" hole is going to take some serious work with the partnerships of P&R is my guess, unless we get another workday out there that is CRAZY people helping out to remove all the honeysuckle and trash.  I would imagine in all honesty that new hole is about a total of 20-30 hours of work needed to get it to a point to start to sculpt it.  So if we had 6 people it would still be a day's work.

The initial holes are probably about 20 hours each, and the #6 extension I really can't figure out how much time, and more importantly how to remove the cuttings once we get there.....it is much more difficult than I had thought, but I know once it is done, it will be one of the cooler holes available.

Hey Jack, let me know when you need some help. My friends & I were all talking about how all we do is play the courses around here but never help with up keep, trash, etc & we want to get more involved with helping out. If I had a weeks notice I could prob round up at least 2-3 people to help with whatever is needed.

When I cut the first portion out, I simply drove my truck up P&R's makeshift gravel access ramp, and backed in just past the basket. If we actually have some help other than the usual suspects, it won't be a problem at all. The important thing is to have help dragging off the cut material so the guys doing the actual cutting don't have to stop and do it themselves.
Title: Re: Pin Placements
Post by: jack on February 14, 2013, 01:57:35 PM
The other thing though is all the tires that are in there for the alternate route.  I want your placement to be a "cheater" shot if someone wants to get crazy and attempt a 3 or a 4.  The line will be to go to the original placement then throw a RHBH hyzer and then lay up for a 4 on top level golf.  This assumes that the first RHBH Anny is close to the original pin.

By going towards the right placement, if, "IF" you make it past that pin location there may be a shot to get an anny up on the next level, albeit through some thick schule, and be able to get a 3, but the risk is going to be there, tight to get to the pin placement, and tight to get onto the green from that location, plus there are quite a few elevation changes, and hitting some of them will severely worsen your chance at a 7 let alone safety to the green....
Title: Re: Pin Placements
Post by: Mike Hyzer on February 14, 2013, 02:04:44 PM
I never even thought about a cheater route. That's going to be 3 or 4 times the work if we do that. I'd rather just stick with one route straight past the main placement, but that's just me. *shrug*

Post by: jack on February 14, 2013, 03:01:12 PM
I really like the "cheater" routes in the heavy wooded holes.  I wanted to look at doing one on the final few holes, but I am not going to be using that area now, and I am glad.  I think that they are going to be working on that area as a dog park.  Glad I am not going to be battling that option!

Well gosh diggety darn it, let's put one along the extreme left side of #4 for the long placement! Yes, oh yes, that would be SWEET! ;D

If we can muster up a point to get down on Chouteau from it, I am not opposed.

I have been thinking about this since they ripped open the guts of the area....

The other option, and I am serious, would be to walk down the back side of #3, then come around to #4, and then "up the stairs" and go down along the "new" opening from last year, and throw out #5

gun talk is lame.
i've got a crocodile <in my basement> for home defense, no background check was needed. it is estimated that there's 150 homes with crocodiles in the u.s. and only 14 children were injured or killed by crocodiles in the home. one kid thought it was ok to take his parents crocodile to school <for show and tell>, and it accidentaly bit another student, but the parents were not jailed or fined. kids think crocodiles are cool, and even some rowdy teens think it's cool to let their crocodile loose evey now and then, i think they are punks. every american, even felons believe they have the right to own a crocodile, and i am surprised that churches and public venues do not allow decent law abiding sane folks to disguise their crocodiles as seeing eye dogs for their own protection in these places. cops should have crocodiles to remind the public that we live in a crocodile society, and there will be no funny business. sometimes i sleep with my crocodile under my pillow, it makes me feel safer. the national crocodile association thinks that if more people had their crocodiles with them at all times, there would be less crocodile incidents, do you agree?

When I was around 8, my parents went on a business trip/vacation to New Orleans, leaving me and my sis with relatives. When  they returned, they came in carrying a shoebox with a small aligator inside. Back in the 60's it must have been semi legal to buy alligators in Louisiana and bring them to Kansas. We kept the alligator in a wash tub for almost a year. I dunno about crocdiles, but I can attest to the fact that aligators are not very people friendly. It would sit on it's brick in the wash tub all day, eating the minnows we put in the water, and whenever I went to play with it, or show it some affection, it would hissssssss. It had really big, sharp teeth. It grew to about 14 inches long before it caught a cold and died. We burried it in the back yard.  ???

We can move it around a touch. Here is what I was thinking....
1-original
2-Long
3-SHORT
4-Rocks
5-Short
6-Left
7-Middle
8-Trees
9-Long
10-Middle
11-Long
12-Short
13-Long
14-Short
15-Tree
16-Waterfountain
17-Peninsula
18-Tree

That should be a good mix of long/short and still leave some of the long for the daylight we have available for folks, but makes it more human as well. Heard some good things from those that did bother to play it as well as many a compliment from local on the "uber long" layout. Thanks all.

Heads up!   Hole 6 has been moved to the short location.  For those souls that are glutton for punishment, a basket now sits in the long placement but some additional work still needs done for it to be realistically playable.

Everything should be in the longest setting right now, it will probably stay that way until the week before the Lion's Den.

What are the current pin positions?  Have they changed on the last few months?  Trying to decide what to do for Safari Saturday this Saturday at Cliff Drive.

Unless Jack or Derek have moved them I would imagine that they are still in Might Mo settings.
