Title: weak sauce....
Post by: jack on June 25, 2012, 06:09:53 PM
So I sit at Cliff Drive from 5:37 until 6:02 and not one shows up....looked like 2 casuals came in as I was elaving, but this is seriously weak sauce folks.

Next week is supposed to be Blue Valley.......I will probably be out of town.....at least that is a real reason to miss league.

I guess that I won the CTP tix to English beat for tonight as well, by simply bothering to show up!

Off to Knuckleheads........

Man weak people, weak.....

FWIW, I tried to get out of work early to play league, but we were shorthanded. That really sucks, the course is mowed and playing real nice right now, too.

You're killing me...  I need to change my schedule and come in on Mondays I guess....  I threw a solo 18 holes at Clover Dell last night and had a great time wading through the thistle and poison ivy but American Pickers and Pawn Stars afterward I would have gladly replaced with English Beat at Knucklehead's.

It's very rough for me to make any leagues on the weekdays unless they are close. I am stationed on Fort Leavenworth and I usually don't get off work until 5pm, sometimes a little bit later. They have been doing construction on the only bridge going into Missouri for the past couple months, so that delays me 10-15 mins every evening. I am going to try to make a few leagues. I want to get out more playing disc golf, I just started playing the sport last week.

Fridays at WyCo are a good bet for you. If you get away from the fort right around 5pm you should make it to WyCo in plenty of time. Just jump on 7 Hwy and head south to Bonner Springs. It's one of the funnest leagues in town and a great way to wind down from the work week.

I will defintely have to look into this one!! I will be at the Leavenworth one tonight, I brought a pair of shorts and a T-Shirt to change into after work. Hopefully I don't make myself to look like a fool throwing the disc!!! See you tonight!

My wrist was in a lot of pain throughout the day and it didn't get well enough to come out.  I was icing it all day at work in hopes to get out there, but I made an executive decision to stay home instead.  It'a game time decision whether or not I go to Old Pike tonight.

I figured the finding Sunday morning was a sign that maybe it was a good Monday to visit PC. Bad decision all around. Played like garbage and returned to Missouri with the #291 bag tag.

OUCH Vince. Maybe you should take that tag to Shawnee Mission tonight and try to pawn it off to another Kansan.

Funny, Old Pike league had 35 people come out last night. It wasnt too hot for us I guess.. Maybe its your stupid, difficult, dead-body having course Jack!  ;D

Dead bodies yes, stupid and difficult no. Challenging is a better word and quite possibly one of the top three courses in the city.

It really is. I usually play the front 10 twice instead of the full 18. It's not hard, just not very fun personally.

11 don't you hate climbing that hill? I do.
12 is okay, kind of a neat shot with OB.
13 Lame
14 still pretty lame
15 zzzz oh wait, there's one giant tree there. that helps.
16 getting better, hey, whats that giant open pit of sh!t? oh..it just ate my disc
17 yeah, pretty cool on the island, and decent earth undulation.
18 cool because you're done and close to the car...

11 if you don't want to get some exercise play ball golf and take a cart
12 great hole, especially in the wind
13 BV "esq" and it feels good to crush every now and then
14 lost a guardian tree on short placement and long right isn't exactly easy
15 i would be willing to bet you hit that tree 7 times out of 10
16 clearly a wide hyzer is the safe bet, but it's risk reward for the long left placement
17 both long pins are incredibly tough threes with several tee options
18 if you wanted a short course with an easy finish you should go elsewhere

If this where any other city in America, cliff would be the best course in that city. You guys don't understand how spoiled and lucky we are!  I for one am extremely grateful for all the beautiful options we have and the countless hours of hard work of a very small percentage of our disc golf community.   We have a ton of players and very very few volunteers to make these courses incredible.  I know some of the trash talk is just for fun and it's fine, but move to almost anywhere else in the country for a year and then come back and tell me cliff is boring

good perspective Westa. I agree brotha. the trash talk is all fun n games for sure. I love Cliff. I just wish it would stop kickin my ass somtimes. and You're right, go mostly anywhere else in the country and that city will not have a family like we have here in KC.

I'm one thankful dude.

Is this one of those things where folks try to sound interesting and cool by referring to obscure bands nobody's ever heard of as "classics", as if they are actually famous? (I mean, they're playing at Knuckleheads, so they can't be too famous.) Seriously, never heard of any of those bands. What kind of music do they play? Just curious, is all...

I don't find the back 8 hard at all, I just think find it boring and unnecessary long. This is how it went the last time I was there.

11 - drive short of the tree up the middle, lay up to the basket.
12 - throw a straight drive and skip off the road at the basket.
13 - throw as far as you can, lay up with a putter.
14 - throw a flex anny over the road and land by the basket.
15 - throw straight up the gut for an ace run (denied by the tree mostly in the short pin).
16 - As a lefty, I think this is the worst hole ever. I could write an essay over how miserable this hole is.
17 - Throw a big shot towards the trees over the road and let it come back. Easy 3 no matter where the pin is.
18 - Throw a big drive up the gut, lay up with a putter.

Disc golf is so boring. Here's how I Play 90% of the holes on any course. Throw my first shot and lay up with a putter or putt at it.

to be fair, those bands aren't really all that obscure.  they each had multiple hits (in the 80s).

Ah the 80's.  A great time to grow up.  Knuckleheads has a knack for bringing in bands that were quite popular in the '80's.  The lead singer from The Stranglers was there awhile back.  The Stranglers are a little more obscure than The Romantics or The English Beat but very influential to that period of of New Wave/punk.

But then again, I'm just trying to sound "cool".   8)

Hugh Cornwall ROCKED THE F'n HOUSE!

Now then.....quite the thread drift, but nice discussion here in Cliff Drive....back to disc golf....

12 - throw a straight drive and skip off the road at the basket.
16 - As a lefty, I think this is the worst hole ever. I could write an essay over how miserable this hole is.

As a Righty, #12 grabs you by the balls, and scares you to death from fear of the cliff nastiness, to the dangit OB.  So you are blessed to be a lefty......
#16 is the exact opposite configuration, in that it is easier for a hyzer from a righty, (but why do mine seem to go OB on an anny route then?) but I am curious why you this is the "worst hole ever"  I love how it comes like an hour glass with ob on both sides, and if the wind is in play it makes it tough on all approaches.

So let me know why you think that this hole is the worst one on the planet.......

Now I don't want to get into an argument over the front 9 versus the back 9, but the initial intent for those of you that may not know is that Cliff was designed with a 6-6-6 format to showacase many of the challenges of typical disc golf in KC.  We have 6 tight technical holes, we have 6 holes with defined boarders, and 6 pretty much wide open holes to air it out.  There is a piece of every game and aspect to be used on the course.

Now that being said.....I need help to make it more aligned with what people may "enjoy", and the knowledge that we have lost about 20 trees at CRUCIAL junctions out there make a change needed.  So starting this fall, if you want to help with the reconfiguration of the course, I would welcome your efforts.  Essentially holes 13, 14, 15 will vanish.  You will walk from #12 to #16 (like that is going anywhere, I mean having the "worst hole ever", that is some great notoriety!) and 3 holes will be added in 2 different locations.  I also want to extend #6.

Alas it is always a work in progress, but the fact that you play the front 9 is more than people were doing here 10 years ago, and that is progress.

 ;D

I don't think #16 is the worst hole ever, but as a lefty, it is definitely one of the most challenging as far as placing a drive for a good second shot. Drive too long, it usually goes OB. Drive too short, you end up with a long, blind, turnover approach shot. That hole usually kicks my ass, but whenever I do manage to get a 3 on it, it makes me feel like I kicked its ass, and then I go to #17 with a full head of steam and a nice boost of confidence.

It's interesting that a 920 rated intermediate player claims to be able to shoot 3 or 4 down on the back like it's child's play (show me), but whines about one of the best designed holes on the course just because it doesn't fit his eye.

And 17 is an easy 3 no matter where the pin is. Don't you forget it!:D

Jack, I enjoy the 6-6-6 design of Cliff.   Even #13 has a place in the scheme of things.   If it goes away, I look forward to seeing what to create elsewhere.

Intermediate? INTERMEDIATE?!?! I took 12th in Advanced at the Wide Open!  /s

Don't remember saying I shoot -4, just that it's there (if I don't %$#@ up). I'll always play a round at Cliff with you if you want. Just hit me up!

Maybe It's been too windy the past few times I've played there, but the roller never looks like an option. I'll try it next time I'm there.

hole 10 and 16 are both lefty roller holes once the grass starts drying out.  the problem is they play in opposite winds.  tailwind makes you put the roller down earlier.  so usually only one of the two is playing as a roller hole.

the loss of a few key trees has made the back side a repeat of shots.  the three pines used to protect the right side of 13.  it made the righties start their drive on an anhyzer to get to a shorter upshot.  hyzer drive left 350+ upshot.  anhyzer increased the risk of ob with south wind.  now, you can start your drive on nearly any angle you choose.

hole 14 had the one huge tree that made that hole.  it was a hyzer between two flip shot holes.  again, now you can start your disc on any angle you choose.

hole 15 is a skilled two in the long position and favors the lefties.  the short location was put in for lions den and leagues early/late in the year where daylight is a concern.  is stays short too much but the short location breaks up some of the monotony caused by 14s change.

hole 16 is designed like a ball golf hole.  it pinches down with double ob where most players land their drive.  the headwind provides the major challenge here.  is can be a little boring without it.  this hole can screw up your round if you take it for granted.

hole 17 needs it tree as well though it is still a tough hole without the tree.  again like fairway bunkers in ball golf, the fairway pinches with double ob where some players land their drive.  wind provides more teeth but this is a tough hole either way.

hole 18 is not a good hole.  the drive on this hole is usually not meaningful.  500+ throwers can have a chance at 2 by bringing the ob in play.  there used to be a lower branch to contend with on the upshot to the short, but its still usually a star par for advanced/pros.  the long location makes you use your head a little more, but can bring the cars into play.

swope has had the same problems, and waterworks to some extent.  can u imagine losing some of the key trees that make holes at waterworks?  either the left or right tree on 1,7,8,10?  remember 11 when it had the lower ceiling?  it was a much better hole.  how will hole 13 or 16 be if they loose their one tree?

instead of calling any hole the worst hole ever, how about bringing some extra water or mulch for the smaller trees at your favorite course?  be thankful for some of the trees we still have and . . . play the Tree Love Classic on September 15th where we will be joining together to raise the awareness of this exact issue.  i know, shameless plug  :D

Drew, I guess I never saw the course when it was fresh since I only recently started playing. It sounds like it would play a lot better with those trees in place on some of the open holes so you can't air it out there so easily. Risk/reward is what makes this game so addicting.
