Title: Discraft Ace Race - Swope Park - 09-23-12
Post by: Scott A Reek on August 07, 2012, 09:51:25 AM
Hello KC,

We are working on the Discraft Ace Race details and hope to have pre-registration up soon.  Last year we had over 150 players and want to break 200 this year.  Once registrations is up, pre-registration will be helpful so we can accurately order enough packages.  As of now, it looks like September 23rd is going to be the day and it will once again be at Swope.

Keep an eye out for more information really soon!!

This years Ace Race Discs and Package

The 2012 Ace Race prototype disc is officially classified as a long range driver, but it could be more accurately described as a hybrid driver and is superb for running aces! Faster than a Buzzz but slower than a Stalker, the disc offers players controlled fairway shots. At medium to fast speeds this disc will hold the line to finish with a slight hyzer. Give it a rip!

Sweet, thanks DD! I was a little worried we wouldn't have one here this year. This disc seems like it might be much better for running aces than the putters they have given us 2 of the last 3 years.

I know some people are good at driving with putters. I however do not like using putters to drive with. After all they are made for putting. :)

What do you think people drove with back in the day?  That's right, putters.

Consider an era when your distance choices consisted of the Aero, XD and Aviar.

So that explains why some of the old timers are so good with them.  ;D

Were they considered putters back then? Or just discs?

I probably wouldn't complain about the Ace Race using putters if Discraft made decent putters. Their mid ranges are far superior to their putters.

The Eagle, which was quickly re-tooled into the Aero landed in the Spring of 1983 (although the list below indicates an earlier date of approval). At that time, it was just a disc; there were no putters, mids, or drivers. It wasn't too long before this disc, that would someday be called a "putter," set a new distance record in the 500's. The Aviar came after the Aero, and then then the Aviar XD (extra distance). Below I've listed all Innova Discs that have been approved by the PDGA. The first disc that we can now call strictly a driver was the Phenix. It was tooled using the Aero mold, and the Aero went away for several years before its return as a "putter." The Phenix, thrown by Sam Ferrans, set a world record as well. Subsequent "drivers only" were the larger-diameter Barracuda and Scorpion, followed by the even-bigger Jaguar. The Viper with a 21.7 cm diameter was the first driver that was the same size as the existing midranges as the Shark, Stingray, Roc, Cobra. It wasn't until 1992 and the Whippet that a smaller (21.2) diameter driver showed up. Since then, most drivers have been close to this size.  I think it was in the first half of the 90s that companies started designating discs as drivers, midranges, and putters.

Very cool information.  Thanks Rick!

I remember the Phenix.  I couldn't throw it.  It was quite domey if I remember correctly.

I do remember carrying a P-38 Lighting.  That disc used to roll forever.

I was alive in 84, just don't remember it well as I was 3.  ;D

Great history lesson Rick. It is hard for me to imagine that people were throwing those discs 500ft, that is much more impressive than the new world record with a blizzard plastic high speed driver.

One of my old favorites was the Cyclone. I still have an old Cyclone2 that I recovered from Teds Dread 5 years after I threw it in the pond. I also still have an old X-clone.

Today I saw a Coupe, a Wolf, an Ace, a Phenix and one date 1984 plus a hand made bag that was multi-colored. Because of the things he told me I won't say his name. (JB)  He's a guy I work with and still uses the disc' and bag.

Oh and I would like to play the Ace Race, you guys need some one to come in last.  :P

Registration is also starting to roll in for the Ace Race, we have about 20 or so far and we want to break the 160 from last year.  Get registered soon so we can order the packages and make sure we have enough for everyone.  We are working on the details now to make this a super fun and casual day at Swope.

If you register you will get a players package regardless if you can play or not.  We will be doing a flex start throughout the day 9-6 so as long as you get in 36 holes, you can play or if you cant make it, you can enjoy your players package :)

Oh too easy...I know I will be back by 9am, if I am driving. It's a 13.5 hour drive from KCMO to Detroit, so if I leave by 6pm I should be good. 36 holes at swope won't be too bad, should only take 3 hours most.

with the ace race should be able to accomplish in less than 90 minutes, only one throw per basket

And everything is set up really short so less throws and less distance to walk.  It wont take long to play 36 holes.  If it is a crowded course, you might wait longer on the groups in front of you.

I know the name is "Ace Race", so 1 throw at each basket?  So as a newbie, should I come out at anytime, throw at 36 baskets and watch some awesome players? Are adult beverages allowed? And do I need to belong to any clubs?
From the flyer it sounded fun and I would like to watch a tournament and some good players.

Yeah Jack we all realized the Shunga was that weekend, bu with the schedule being so full, this was the best we, DD and KCFDC, could do. I know KC has enough players to fill both local events and have some people at the Shunga.

Its a "kid" weekend for me as well, so I have some gyrations to do to figure what makes sense.  Probably not playing this one though is the shame of it all.  I guess I am boycotting because no QMS team was allowed.

This event is going to be exciting and I should be receiving the packages just in time for the event.

If you want to help with setting up the course, please let me know.  I know i could use the help or if you have a basket we could borrow for the event, please let me know.

Thanks

I've got one of those DisCatcher lights, with only one set of chains. Not the best basket for an event like this (lots of spit-outs) but I've got it if you want it.

Last year we just had everybody bring a basket that could and attach it to another basket in some way....the pyramid was awesome.

I challenge you to create a 3 tier pyramid!!  Just need a grabber to get discs out of the top basket.

Zip ties are great for grouping baskets together, too.

Thanks for the offers on baskets and I am still looking for more.  I will work on the layout on Friday/Saturday.  The layout will be a little different than last year but you can rest assure that we will be creative on the basket situation to include some stacking baskets :)

The Ace Race format is set and i will print these tomorrow for Sunday.  We will be playing two rounds of 20 holes using a Flex Start from 9-6.  The last card must be out by 4 so we can be done by 6 and awards will follow to the winner.

Any metal/fabric hit on the basket or above is one (1) point. Any ace is three (3)points. In the event of a leaner, tweener (stuck in the face mask), or a topper (a disc that rests on the top of the basket), each is worth two (2) points.  A Black Ace is worth (-2) Points

Many baskets will have multiple baskets tied together

Scott, thanks for the fun afternoon.  This was a great Ace Race!

Got my first ever ace today.  Witnessed by Dan Cashen, Dan Howard, Mark Stiles, Thomas (dont know last name), my wife Amy, and my 6 year old Hannah.  Subsequently, on the very next hole, got my second ever ace with the same disc.

Very fun event today.  For the price of the entry fee the two discs and the water bottle are a great deal.  Hope you all do it again next year.

Yesterdays Ace Race was a blast and I think that everyone had fun.  I took a lot of notes on how to improve even more next year and if you have any comments or suggestions, feel free to PM and I will gladly talk to you about them

We had 160 Players come out to play and both Caleb Walker and Van Spratford tied for 1st both throwing two Aces and a total of 9 Points.  Since this was a flex start, either one of them were there at the same time to do a playoff so they are going to split the Discraft Prize Package.

There were also 18 Aces on the daying paying out at $28 for each Ace.

Thanks you to all of the people who stayed after to help, all of the players who brought an extra basket or 2 and thank you to everyone who came out and participated and we are already looking forward to the event next year
