Title: Help Fix My Computer????
Post by: spnachio on March 05, 2013, 10:40:13 AM
I've got a dell that wont get past start-up/restart screen.  The only reason its not on the curb is the fact that I have a buttload of itunes music on it.

If anyone wants to give a look I throw some cash.

Suggestions on a place to take it would work also?

I know much about computers so maybe one of yall  I.T. guys can help.

It may be a virus, try this, can't hurt.  Turn it off, turn it back on and hold the F8 key down while windows is starting up to get into safe mode (IT guys correct me here if that's the wrong key, been a while since I had to do this).  Then run your anti-virus software and hopefully find and kill that bug.  But please give me a call before you kick it to the curb, I need parts for a linux machine :D

ps: If it works my consulting fee is measured in bottles!

Yep, F8. If that works to get you in but you can't get beyond that at least you can copy all your music and stuff off before reinstalling the OS.

Can you clarify what you mean by 'start up screen'?  If it's not getting past the initial BIOS screen, you're most likely looking at a hardware problem.  If it's stuck at the loading Windows splash screen, using F8 to boot to safe mode and troubleshooting from there is probably going to be your best bet.

Did it just start having these issues?  You can attempt to restore the system to a previous date once in safe mode if so.  If all else fails, you should at least be able to remove the hard drive, throw it into another computer and retrieve the data unless it's severely messed up.

I left it in basement for 2-3 months and when i go to start it I get a black screen with white letters sayin something about restarting and then counts down 30 secs and starts restart message and countdown again.  I'll try f8 or if I decide to go office space on it, its all yours Dan

Where are you located?  I wouldn't mind taking a look at it.  I'm in Westport.

If you're seeing the 30 second timer each time, it likely means it's trying to boot to Windows, but can't startup at all.  Which could be a number of different things.  It might be that the CMOS battery drained completely and reset your CMOS settings so your drive is in ATA mode instead of AHCI.  On some of those Dells, it had to be set to ATA for WinXP, and AHCI for Win7, and wouldn't run otherwise.  The Windows install might be corrupt.  I have some boot discs that can fix it if so.  It doesn't sound like the HD is mechanically dead, so in the worst case you could still hook the drive up to another computer and get your iTunes stuff off.

Let me know if you need some help.

Daniel Howard, my my, what flavour of Linux you gettin into man?

This is great. I didn't know we had so many techies here :)
We WILL get you a solution Spin. just keep answering our questions!

Side note: if any of you would like to volunteer your time to technology and disc golf, bring it on! There is such thing as a Technology Team for the KCFDC. We'd love your thoughts, skills, time or even some .php coding if you've got it.

Tech + Disc Golf = mo'betta. seriously though, has anyone made any bag mods, or found the perfect recipe for taping lights on?

Utz I've got a 6-7 yr old Ubuntu but I'll get a new one, any recommendations?  Got a little free time lately and thought it would be a fun project to put together a second machine for the plotter, it hates Windows!  But I have no real skills, don't expect to see me on anyone's tech team anytime soon.

Nice. for what you're looking for (usability, compatibility, "daily driver") Mint Linux is pretty sweet. There's plenty of desktop options, but I'm a KDE user myself.

more on this later! awesome DH.

Size it using photoshop, http://www.gimp.org/ (http://www.gimp.org/) , or http://pixlr.com/editor/ (http://pixlr.com/editor/) . It may be easier to do the following:

This site  http://imgur.com/ (http://imgur.com/)  is very useful for uploading images which may be over a site cap.

Top right click computer, where it says 'upload images'. Once uploaded you will be provided a link. You can upload anonymously or create an account.
