Title: Earn your Green Frees.
Post by: showmeDoug on December 04, 2013, 07:52:43 PM
Hey everybody, I am having a Help Beautify Your Course round this Saturday 12/7 @ 11:00. We will play a normal round of golf, but as we play we will pick up the trash on the course. If a few people play it shouldn't take us hardly any extra time. I will provide one ice-cold 12 pack of Boulevard IPA for the crew. More workdays will follow as the weather turns warm again, but I want to get started getting this course to be as nice as any in town. Please reply so I know who to expect.  Bag Tags will be in play. Come out and enjoy your course with some fellow do-gooders.

I wanted to post that I will be going up there @ 12:00 if anybody is interested.

Hey guys I wanted to post a progress report. The parking lot at #1 is now trash free. After playing a round at Little Blue
I went over to Baby Blue and picked up all the trash from it, the pond, the shelter, and the playground. More work days to come. Beer & Brats for all volunteers. Have you ever felt guilty for having so much fun for free, well then come to the next work day and earn your green frees.

You. Are. Awesome!    8)

Thanks for taking the initiative to make things nice. Hopefully with better weather you can get more volunteers.

I also met with Ben C. out there yesterday to make a plan  for this course. By the time the Wide Open tourney plays BV this summer, this course will showcase what KC Disc golf is all about. The next workday will focus on trimming all of the tree shoots at the base of the trees (a big job), and honeysuckle eradication.
P.S. I've got a plan to make L11 (S13) the nicest hole at the park.

The next work day @ BV will be Saturday 1/11/14 @11:00 a.m. If you can show up with a handsaw and/or a set of loppers, and help trim some tree shoots/cut out some honeysuckle - you will be a benefit to the park and the club. I will only ask for two hours of your time.

I know that it is cold, but if dressed warmly it really isn't all that bad -as long as we stay moving.
If the weather conditions are really bad I will postpone this , but it is January, so it's cold out.

We had a productive afternoon today. We walked L5 and cleaned up the trees while looking for the long pin placement (never found it), We cleared honeysuckle/trimmed the tree shoots/vines from the fairway trees on L9. We opened up the tree barrier and cleared a lot of honeysuckle at S13. Thanks to Ben, Adam, and his, out of town, friend Bobby for all the work today. 8 man hours total.

FYI, #5's other placement is in that thick stuff on the right side when you're looking down the fairway from the tee. Probably farther down the fairway than you might think. I don't remember ever seeing that area cleared so that the long pin could be used.

Post by: asjzn6 on January 13, 2014, 01:08:43 PM
Yeah there is  one of the telephone bridges across the way the made sense heading to a large area that could be a green but with snow and probably 12" of grass no chance of finding the placement

It is a tough find.  I am not certain but when #5 was hit, we may have moved the long pin...it may be hidden there still.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the work out there, it all helps!

I started work on L10 this evening. I was only out there for 1 hour, but I cleaned up 5 trees. The next official workday will be Sat. February 1st, and the first Saturday of every month there after. That makes for five official workdays before BV hosts the KCWO. Come on out and earn your Green Free.

On the side of the road wherever you are. P&R should pick up.

Don't forget this weekend to come out and help clean up around the park.  This time of the year is the best for getting to places that aren't covered in that green stuff that gives us air.  Makes for a much easier time to clean accordingly!
Title: Re: Earn your Green Frees.

Plan of Attack - We will be cutting tree shoots and honeysuckle off of the fairway trees and adding said brush to the large brush pile that are scattered throughout the course. P&R is going to remove the piles once we are done (also remove dead trees/stumps). I would ask anybody who planned on coming out to bring a hand saw, I only have two extra. As an added incentive to the volunteers - we will be hitting Hi-Boys (best burger in town) for lunch afterwards. We will get started @ 11, I will be out there @ 10:30. Hope to see ya'll out there.

Man, the weather didn't cooperate today. Still put in 4 hours total. Cleared fairway trees on the back nine, and picked up all of the trash from hole #10. The March workday will be big a big one. We are going to have a bonfire on hole #11 to clear brush from the course. Food and beverages will be provided.

In addition to the clearing we want to get accomplished, on March 1st, if the ground is thawed, we will be replacing the long sleeve on long 16/ little 18 and the left pin on #6.  I hope this is plenty of advanced notice to get people out to help.

NICE!

I would ask Kreeger to see if we can move that long #16 up the hill and to the right behind the tree line though instead of the current placement in all honesty.

Just a reminder. March 1

The weather is changing, somewhat.  We all want to get out and play.  Come out and give us a hand cleaning up so it's not five people working all day and everyone else playing.

There is a big workday scheduled for this Saturday March 1st. If you can come out for a couple of hours it would be much appreciated. I will be out there @ 10, but the workday hours are from 11-1. I am organizing a disc golf Party on April 20th to be held @ BV. We will play 20 holes (Short BV + Long 17 & 18) To be invited all you have to do is volunteer out there for a few hours on the March or April workdays (or both). I hope to see you out there!

Thanks for pointing that out, I didn't look at the calendar before I posted. Maybe Sat. April 12th would work better, it would give everybody a peek at the course before the City of Fountains tourney the following weekend Sat April 19th. I will ask the people that show up this weekend what they want to do. I will still go up there and play a 20 hole rd. on April 20th though.

Maybe postponing an official workday for two weeks wouldn't be a bad idea, but I will be out there cutting tree shoots and taking out some honeysuckle bushes - there is soo much to do. If people want to come out, I will be there.

Cold doesn't bother me, I personally enjoy working in it this time of year.  Rain/Drizzle/Sleet/wet snow does.  If the weather is alright I will try to get out there, if it isn't, then I am going to be working indoors I am certain.  Today would be a great day in my mind to get out there.  If it is like this I will work on getting there!

Title: Re: Earn your Green Frees.
Post by: showmeDoug on March 10, 2014, 02:12:59 PM
Now that Blue Valley has officially been announced as a Wide Open course I am doubly motivated to it's beautification. I would like to put a few hours in this Sunday from 11-1. I could really use some help clearing honeysuckle from the fairways and removal of dead branches. If you have a truck and a hand saw you could really be a benefit to this course.

There is a workday at Blue Valley Saturday April 5th from 9-11. We will clear some more honeysuckle and tree shoots from the fairway trees. For all of those that come help and "Earn their Green Free" there will be adult beverages/hotdogs, and some disc golf on Friday April 11th. (To be held in conjunction with FTL) Remember the City of Fountains tourney is Sat. April 19th, this will be a good opportunity to come get a rd. in before the tourney.

Please come out and put in a couple of hours tomorrow Saturday April 5th 9:00 - 11:00. We will put the majority of our effort on cleaning the fairways of brush and tree shoots. If you plan on playing the City of Fountains tournament or the Wide Open do yourself a favor and come out to get reacquainted with the course. Coffee and donuts will be there, will you? Oh BTW, I think the FTL plans on playing out here the day before the COF - Friday April 18th.
Title: Re: Earn your Green Frees.

FTL will be playing/picking up trash/downed limbs this Friday at BIG BV. For those familiar with FTL you would know that they are a two round group. The morning rd. is when we will do the cleaning so if your interested come on out. Beer and dogs will be served in between rounds.  COF is the next day and it would be a great opportunity to give some karma to the course - give on Friday and receive on Saturday.

It did look great.  The only really noticeable section would be the start of the woods on #4.  It looked pretty fresh out there, but the rest of the course looked just wonderful.

Some tree trimming is needed on #9 (Need a gap through the trees) and then on #10, is there a way to tie those trees together to give a gap?  #18 may need a cleansing of the tree wall as well.

The rest of it looked fantastic out there though.  Overall, A+ for certain.  I loved it!

I agree Jack, and there is more that I would add to the list. With a few more workdays/volunteers Blue Valley will be all that it can be for the Wide Open. It would be nice to do a walk through with you and give/get some ideas. I am working with P&R to get the rest of the brush piles and tree stumps removed. Super long 7 needs to be cleared for the WO, and I have some great ideas for new pin placements for L11, S13, L15, and L16.
I see 4 par 5's out there - for tournament play (3, 7, 9, 18)

Will #5 long right ever be in play again?  I've heard tell of a pin over there and see the trees to walk across, but haven't ever seen the pin over there.
Title: Re: Earn your Green Frees.
Post by: jack on April 21, 2014, 01:33:33 PM
#3 par 5 is always arguable.  I think our entire card got 5's on it, and we were all around it with a shot at 4....

Hopefully I can get out there soon, but I know my next few weekends are shot with Masters and GBO, so it will have to wait until May, but I promise to find some time.  Maybe we can play Big Blue on Cinco De Mayo during league together?

Putting a pin placement back (is it still there?) for L5 would be a big project and hard to maintain. My main focus is making the inner course more of a go to course and beautifing  BIG Blue for the big arms and Tournaments. Jack, I will be there for the May 5th league night.

L5 is a tough one for certain.  The maintenance of it was always a subject that until it connects with the field opening across the west would be tough.

I love the energy and ideas you got flowing through!

Is the pin still there, Jack?  After seeing the work that has been done on the rest of the course, I would doubt that cleaning up L5 for the Wide Open would be all that tough considering the work that's been done on 11 (LOOKS FANTASTIC DOWN THERE).  If the pin placement is still there and it is an accessible pin for one weekend, I don't see why we couldn't clean it up even if it is the only weekend that the placement is used all year.  In the three years I've been playing disc golf in KC I've always wondered about that long placement.  Granted, I like having short 5 as a deuce opportunity more often than not.  But, why not stretch it for the weekend that the big boys are here?  90% of them will deuce that short placement and it becomes somewhat of a dull hole for them as it is just an easy hyzer.  I haven't been able to attend the work days thus far out there, but if the pin is still there and I get the go ahead, I'm sure I can round up some east siders with weed eaters to clean the area for the Wide Open.

I will ask P&R if they can mow L5. S5 would be a good placement for the short course.

Yes!  By all means, leave it in the short for the normal short course.  I'm just speaking towards the KCWO and having another hole that the pros probably haven't played in awhile (in addition to L7 which it sounds like we'll be using).  I don't want to step on toes if the holes have already been established for the KCWO, just a thought.

P&R says that they all ready have a signed contract for mowing the park and the field for L5 is not on the list, so maybe next year.
Title: Re: Earn your Green Frees.
Post by: jhinck2 on April 22, 2014, 12:48:30 PM
What if volunteers did it?  Does it have to be something the contracted mowers do?
Title: Re: Earn your Green Frees.
Post by: jack on April 22, 2014, 01:40:06 PM
the problem is that if we mow it, it won't get kept.  Then it goes to the wayside.  Spending that much time on one hole to have it vanish doesn't make much sense when there is more to be done.

Getting the long #7 that hasn't been used in quite some time is a much more plausible effort of energy for certain.  That will require more effort for sure.
Title: Re: Earn your Green Frees.
Post by: jhinck2 on April 22, 2014, 01:48:30 PM
I may have not just spent enough time looking back there to understand how much work is needed to make that placement playable.  I was only looking to use it for the weekend of the wide open.  I understand that it will take a lot of effort to be kept up and I wasn't asking for that.  I just wanted to know if the pin was still in the ground and if it was plausible for us to use that placement for one weekend.
Title: Re: Earn your Green Frees.
Post by: jack on April 22, 2014, 01:56:36 PM
it doesn't make that much sense unfortunately to work on a hole that can't be maintained.  Once we get the rest of the course aligned and in good shape, then moving to the extra areas make sense.
Title: Re: Earn your Green Frees.
Post by: showmeDoug on April 22, 2014, 03:31:14 PM
It really would need to be mowed, it is way overgrown, and would take forever to do with a weedeater. I will talk with some higherups about putting this on the list to get mowed again (starting next year). Like Jack said, L7 would be a much better use of time - and really pretty easy to do.
I want to put a basket in the other end of L11's valley to be used as Short 13's pin placement, as it is all cleared out and ready to go. I think that valley, with all of the rock ledges, is the coolest of the whole park.

Post by: jhinck2 on April 22, 2014, 03:33:20 PM
Agreed, it's a really a good spot.  No worries on L5, was just something I've always wondered about and is something I'd like to see playable again.  In the meantime, I'll take the deuce opportunity!   :o

Between the GBO and Swope Spring renewal everybody was busy golfing. I did pick up some trash and check out how the park is being mowed. I decided to put Long 7 on the maybe next year list - as it is not being mowed under the current contract.

Wide Open Work Day - First Saturday of June 7 and also the following weekend June 14. OB lines need to be painted, inner course baskets need to be pulled, circles need to be painted around the baskets, and all the other normal stuff such as picking up trash/ branches from the fairways. P&R is going to come through and get most of the remaining brush piles removed and possibly remove the downed tree from #5. I've been replacing flowers, etc. in the planters at #1's parking lot. BV is going to look sweet for the WO - come out and help.

I wanted to put out a reminder to all east side do-gooders there will be a Wide Open Workday next Saturday and then again the following  Saturday. These days will be the last chance to help Blue Valley look its best for the WO. Saturday June 7th - nine to noon - be there or be square!

Tomorrow, come on out and give some back.  As an added bonus you can heckle the other team during the Team Challenge.  Not too much though, both rosters are filled with people that have put in lots of hours volunteering on our courses. Coincidence?

Tomorrow is going to be a wet one!  I am in a wedding tomorrow, but will do my best to come out and work next Saturday.  I presume Blue Valley will need more volunteers than Swope.  After playing Swope on Tuesday, I can tell that it is already in magnificent shape and I heard it has had a fresh mow.  I'm hopeful that all courses being used in the Wide Open will have had a fresh mow prior to Wide Open.

What will be done next Saturday at Blue Valley.  I've got a pretty good trimmer that I can bring along, but want to make sure I bring what is needed.  Please provide the rundown on what yet needs to be done.  Thanks!

I would say a trimmer and a lopper would be essential tools. I would like to walk the fairways and continue to clean the fairway trees of saplings, empty trash bins, pick up trash and remove downed branches. See ya out there.

What time are we looking at for Saturday?  Weather looks like it should cooperate.  I'd like to get a round in either before or after the workday so trying to plan ahead.  What is the rundown of what's left to do?  Just the items you mentioned in the last post?

I'd like to play a round and pick up any trash as we play. As far as what I would like to do at this workday- we need to remove the remaining inner course baskets, empty trash bins, weed eat fairway trees, trim any low hanging branches - generally just  course beautification. If we worked from say 9 - 11 or 12 that should leave time to play a rd. + there is non workday stuff that needs to be done like painting the OB lines on the streets/sidewalk, painting the 3 meter lines around the baskets, hanging the mando sign, and cleaning up the water park/parking lot. Plenty of stuff to do if anybody wants to come help - please do! Come help and the club will buy your lunch.

You may want to paint 10 meter lines around the baskets  ::)

I'll likely be there early to get a round of out the way and then do the workday.  I can pick up trash on the course as I go and get a feel for what holes need most work as far as weedeating is concerned.  I'll also bring a few handsaws for the low hanging branches.

Yes, I will be out there at 7:30 or a little before. If we picked up trash as we played - it would sure help the course a lot (the course is a little trashy as of late) I would also like to do some minor tree manicuring as we play, so bring a set of loppers.

I will be having a workday on July 12th at 9:00 a.m. We will be resetting short #6 and short #17, and also (possibly) be installing a new setting in the other end of  #11's valley. Some of the short baskets will be reinstalled at this time also. Oh yeah, I think #1 has a bent setting that needs to be dug out if we have the time/man power. Please plan on coming to help as these modifications will allow me to shorten the course and make it more playable/enjoyable during these hot summer months.

Frustration has started to set in. Nobody showed up to help, again. Here goes a little rant. We are all playing a game for free - in comparison our ball golf friends are paying at least $40 per outing to play the same game. If every one of our club members put in two hours a month at a workday our courses would be perfect.
I am a little POed right now. Some POS stole all of the plants and prairie grass that I planted in the planters at the parking lot last month.
O.K. rant over.
I dug up the bent setting on #1 and #17, and dug up and straightened short #6. Short #17 needs to be reset and I would like to put a new placement in the valley of #13. Can anybody help me?

Doug,

I am on full force at Cliff Right now, I will try to help after next month or so.  Is there anything that I can try to do in the evening to help out?

I am trying to move earth and holes and extreme trash removal at Cliff for the next holes, so I may be limited, but want to help where I can.

Don't get too frustrated, we had 8 of us at Cliff so that may have stolen from the work efforts you are doing as well.

Also....FWIW, everyone that showed up to help at Cliff Drive was a direct result of my text messages to them on Friday.  Not one person came because of the forum.......maybe some came because of the FB postings as well, but over saturation of the event is needed to attract folks.

I get it and understand way to much where you are coming from.

Hey Jack, something you possibly could help with is getting a new #13 for the top of 13's tee sign and new maps for ALL of the signs.
BTW, the majority of my frustration was due to the thievery of the plants, it really bothered me.
Title: Re: Earn your Green Frees.
Post by: jack on July 16, 2014, 02:27:16 PM
I get that.  I would hit up Dan on that as well for the signage as well as updated information.  I mentioned this to him as well.

For future reference.....planting the plants in late october has been a much better plan, this unfortunately isn't the first time that plants were stolen out of there, who would have thought....I mean really....

I haven't given up on those planters - at least they looked good for the Wide Open. Jack, do you know the deal with the pin placement for #10 that is kind of in #1's fairway? It looks like a worthless placement and I would like to dig it up.

I don't know about that.  I know we used it in an old location when we teed from the shelter house back to it for events, it was one of the first pins.  I would say it is probably ok to yank, but I would ask Jim to be certain.....

Can we meet on Friday night to do this that you speak of?  I can probably come help...  Or even on Thursday if that works.

BTW, the course looked great last night, I didn't realize that some of the pins were shorter now, it made me alter the layout for the league, but I am hopeful that people had fun on it.  really can make some fun designs out there, the joy of the land is a certain added benefit.

I just talked to Ben C. - Thursday doesn't work for him and Friday doesn't work for me. I will cancel the BV workday and bring all of the NE manpower to Cliff Dr. on Sat. We can get those pins set whenever - they aren't going anywhere. P.S. I did have the course set short to try and get more people to come out and play, BV can really be intimidating esp. during these hot summer months.

I had to alter league, but I think that they had fun.

Throwing after #9 on the short from the "diamond" on the water over to #3 short has always been a favorite of mine with little risk, it is just fun to play.  I heard Zeke put it by the pin on that one.

If we can do it on Wednesday I can still help as well.

Actually let me change that....

I was just out at BV and boy is it trashy. I cleaned the parking lot /water park of all trash, trimmed the prairie grass in the planters, cleaned out the valley of 10 and 11. I picked up 10 small bags of trash and barely made a dent. If anybody is interested in going out there for a complete walk through/trash pickup, it would be appreciated and will earn you a payed for lunch and a pat on the back. I would like to get the park de-trashed so we can install some new pin placements out there. This "workday" will only take a few hours and will most likely be on a Saturday morning. The weather is hard to judge this time of year, so I can't plan too far in advance - but I will try to give a few days notice. Please consider coming out and helping make this THE BEST course in town. Thank you! Oh yeah, there was a Kreiger sighting as well.

I am having a "workday" this Saturday at 10 a.m. I will mostly be picking up trash in a few of the more trashy spots and also scouting for some new pin placements. I will be out there for a few hours working then I would be up for playing a rd.

Thanks Jack! Jim and I were hard at it again today. We set a short placement on #2, then we set a short placement for #5 only to realize that now we wanted to move "long" 5 up and to the right to make a more difficult green. Jim Kreeger and I set or leveled 7 placements in the last week or so and trimmed a bunch of trees. I am excited to see what people think of the new placements and the overall park. I also wanted to say thank you again to MikeK, Liz, NateZ, Jack, BenW, RobM, and my family for coming out to help with the Blue River Rescue last Saturday. With their help and about 20 other non DG'ers we put about 100 man hours cleaning the East side of the Blue Valley Disc Golf park.

Hey guys/gals, I am going to have a workday at Blue Valley next Saturday May 2nd from 9-11. I would like to work the area in between short
#7 and #3 tee pad. The reason for the work is because I set #7 in the long position (hasn't been there in several years) and it has gotten over grown. If you have a leaf blower, weed eater, chain saw, some loppers (or even just helping hands) please come out and help. This is one of the prettier parts of the park and will be an awesome par 5 - it totally deserves to be cleaned up.

Blue Valley is basically unplayable right now, there are whole trees down all over the course. P&R got after the initial damage, from the storm a few weeks ago, but all of the rain that we've been having made the ground too wet for some of the larger trees. P&R have been notified and will get to it ASAP. I will report back when the cleanup is finished - Thanks for your patience and understanding.

That is most unfortunate, but part of nature.

Does anyone know if these fallen tress both here and Waterworks, can be taken for firewood? It's city property so I'm not sure.  I called and left voice mail several times too.  Jack, any idea? Thank you.

I was out there playing Saturday morning. I played Big Blue 1-16.  There are some limbs down, but I wouldn't call it unplayable.  The teepad/sign on #6 were covered by a downed tree and the green on #11 was pretty swampy.  Other than that, it wasn't too bad.

Regarding the firewood, I have no idea if it is actually legal to take or not (doubt it), but I did see someone cutting up limbs and loading them up in their truck.  They didn't seem to have any affiliation with the club or the parks department.  I'd say go for it.  There's plenty to choose from.

UPDATE: Blue Valley has still not been cleared of downed trees - from the storms in June. What's taking so long is that P&R had some guys on vacation and the person that I work with at P&R has been promoted and it took me a minute to get ahold of their replacement. So after talking with "the new guy" I have been told that the cleanup of BV will begin this coming week.

Every hole at Blue Valley now has a long and a short setting. 4, 10, and 15 were set today and will be playable on Friday. There are some really cool places to put additional settings, a par 4 on hole 3 - way up on the hill that overlooks the lake. Maybe shorter settings for both 17 and 18? I would like to put a few more pin placements out there - maybe 5 total, and then get some new maps/signs made. Does anybody have any ideas?

I wanted to say thanks to Jim Kreeger. He does more (volunteer) work on a disc golf course than probably anyone in town and maybe as much as anyone in the world. If you see him, out at BV working by his turquoise truck, you should say hi (he loves to talk about DG). We put in another 4 placements this morning, which makes a total of 9 over the last week or so. The new settings are at 1 (par 4), 11 (par 3), 17 (par 3), and 18 (par 4). Also, Jim cleaned out a ton of honeysuckle last week - so that the new placement on 3 will be even more enjoyable to play.

Most people will never know how much work Jim has put into the courses.  Jim has been standing beside the role of Blue Valley YEARS before I invited him to a meeting back in 2001 to talk about putting a course in there.  He came equipped with a map already at that meeting, but sat back and listened to everyone.

We are a fortunate community to have Jim and people like Doug that make our city great.  There are many others, but when Doug calls him out and many of you are aware of what Doug does/has done, remember Jim has been out there over the past decade making it better for us all.

Kudos to you Doug and of course Jim will never read this, but Thanks to you r Kreeger as well!

We put some new pin placements out this week. We started out with a par 5 on #4, then put a tough par 4 on #7, a short par 3 on #8, and also a par 4 on #11. I think we are done with the new pin placements so now we can get some new maps made. Also Dan Cashen wrangled up six really nice benches for Blue Valley and even brought them out and helped install them. The park looks great -come on out!

I could sure use some help tomorrow. I cleared a new route for the short pad on #3 and need some help cleaning up a bit. I would like to clear a little honeysuckle and move the downed trees to a nearby brushpile - it should only take an hour total (less if a couple people show up). After that is done I am going to play a rd. and try to determine the layout for the upcoming tourney - The Battle @ Blue Valley. Tacos will be provided after the rd. I will get started at 9 (or so) and will park over by the teepad for #3.
