Beginners / Re: How to make an etiquette call?
« on: July 06, 2015, 11:02:17 am »
I'd say the real best way to combat this is to move up divisions. Yes it may still happen in higher divisions but hopefully less frequently and there is a better knowledge of etiquette. Recreational is a division where unfortunately that behavior is not seen as bad most of the time. However if you stay in Rec then I think what Jack suggested is spot on.

Thanks to everyone who came out today! I thought it was a lot of fun. We had 20 teams which is awesome for a first time event like this. Next year we'll try and make it bigger and better. Hope everyone who played had fun. I know I did!

Thanks Eric,
I have taken that sheet and reformatted it to reflect the doubles and $20, $10 team amounts. Thanks!

Upon further reflection about payout, I think we have decided to use more of a league payout schedule rather than just top 3. That way there is a more fair way of paying people out depending on the turnout. With this said, is there someone who can send me a payout structure that is used to determine how many get paid out and how much depending on the number of people/teams? I thought maybe the people who have ran doubles leagues might have this available? you can email it to me at gapuryear@gmail.com or just post a link on here. Thanks in advance! I'm excited for this event!

Yes, #6 will be moved short. Everything will hopefully be as short as possible.

And yes Brett, as is noted above a Hole in one gets your 3 points i.e. birdies.

Also, because I did not clarify before, this is a BRING YOUR OWN PARTNER DOUBLES EVENT.

My original post was deleted for some reason. So here it is again with some different terminology. Some friends and I are organizing a little event/cash round on Sunday afternoon.

BIRDIE BLOWOUT JULY 5th. Prairie Center Park. 12:30pm

Prairie Center Disc Course (Olathe) - 36 holes - most birdies wins - doubles best shot - BRING YOUR OWN PARTNER

Registration Fee:  $10 for A-flight players(Open) $5 for B-flight players(Ams)

Payouts for each flight > Depends on turn out.
[Tie breaker will be "closest to the pin" throw-off on hole #1]

Hole #18 Prize Drawing - $25 Dick's card [Every birdie on #18 earns a ticket for the drawing (both players) - 3 tickets per person possible]

Playing holes 1-10, 17, 18 a total of three times = 36 holes

Scoring:  Only tracking your birdies - miss the birdie put, pick up and go to the next hole.  Most birdies wins!
[Note:  Hole in One is scored as 3 birdies]

Simple enough. No need to sign up ahead of time. Just be there with your partner and sign up. Men women children it doesn't matter. Just come have fun.

Derek, again I want to reiterate that I appreciate your volunteering. I'm sorry that I have upset you. I'm sorry that people at the final 9 did not respect you. I did not post this to shame or put you down.

What did you like, what didn't you like about this year's event that you would want to see, not see next year?

Maybe I am wrong, but it seemed like the point of this thread was to discuss the things we felt could be improved on. I am sorry for using the term "bad apples on a power trip." That was not constructive and I understand why it would cause someone to be offended. My apologies. And you are right on a lot of things; That is not an easy job. You deal with a lot of people who do not know what proper etiquette is. I watched Mike Petrin work his a$$ off during that final nine. Nothing but respect for that guy and what he does for this event and for the club in general. I truly appreciate you guys stepping up and doing that. All I am trying to do is suggest ways we can improve. No one is perfect and there is always room for improvement. I really hope that my suggestions or tone does not cause you guys to stop volunteering.

If it is heeded in time, danger may be averted; if it is suppressed, a fatal distemper may develop."[New Statesman interview, 7 January 1939]” ― Winston S. Churchill

Aaron,
You seem to enjoy taking people's constructive criticism and making it a personal attack. I noticed you did the same thing with Nova in a different post. Perhaps you missed my appreciation for the volunteers. I actually am friends with several of the guys on the rope squad. I think it's an important job. It makes the event look professional. I actually was planning to volunteer but was unsure that I would be able to stay for the entire time and didn't want to sign up then have to bail. I'm trying to suggest things that can be improved. Not attack anyone. I'm sorry if you were one of the guys on the ropes that people gave dirty looks to or said rude comments to. That's not cool. Which is why it's even more not cool if the rudeness is coming from volunteers. Like I said, sometimes people need to be told a couple times and I understand that can be frustrating. It doesn't mean it gives anyone the right to be rude when talking to people who are out trying to support the sport. Professionalism has to carry over to all aspects of the event. I can take it if someone yells at me if I'm standing in a bad place. I'm still gonna come back to the Wide Open. I'll still keep playing disc golf. But if new people are coming to the event to see what the sport and the kcfdc is all about and they are treated rudely then we potentially turn someone away from the sport rather than towards it. That's why I think this is something important to address.

I had a great weekend although my play was probably the worst thing of the weekend. I echo the comments about lunch being served. Lee Kilian makes a mean wrap! There are so many great things to say about the event but I want to highlight a couple things I feel like could use some improvement. The final 9 is always fun. I invited several friends and family members to come watch. I'm always proud of showcasing the sport this way. With that said, I have to say I had several instances where I was very disappointed by the tone and demeanor of the guys working the rope and crowd control. I know that's not the easiest job, and I appreciate their volunteering to help. But there were several times when they barked orders at the crowd and came across very rude and unfriendly. i heard several negative comments from the crowd regarding how they were spoken to. Granted some people need to be told a couple times especially if they are at risk of interfering or being injured. But when people are already standing 25 ft away from the rope and paying close attention, they don't need to be yelled at and talked down to. Again I appreciate their help, I just think in the future it would be beneficial to clarify the expectations of the crowd so a couple bad apples on a power trip don't cast a bad shadow on the event. Or maybe people just need to learn how to be nice. :)
I would also say that it would be fun to change up the final 9 a bit in the future. But that's a minor thing. There are so many great holes out there it's hard to choose just 9 to show off.
Thanks again to Dick and everyone who volunteered in any capacity. I really do appreciate all the little things that went into this event.

I can't seem to find much info about the flex start doubles on Thursday. How much does it cost? Who's running it? Does it pay cash or merch credit and to where? Is 4pm the latest you can tee off? Do we form our own groups? Just wondering. Any info is helpful.

Hey Scott I thought of something else that would be sweet to have at this event and possibly even keep up at the DD store. I would love it if you guys had a net and radar gun to see the speed guys can throw. With Simon Lizotte posting his MPH it makes me want to know what my mortal arm can accomplish. I think it would be something most guys would think was cool. You could even do something like at an amusement park where guys pay a few bucks and if they can guess their exact speed on their third throw they win a voucher or disc or something. I think it would be popular. Just throwing it out there!

General Banter / Cicadas
« on: June 07, 2015, 02:56:44 pm »
Me and some buddies played both Olathe courses yesterday and the afternoon round at lakeside was like nothing I've ever experienced. The Cicadas we're so loud the whole round that our ears were ringing in the car afterward. We had to be standing next to each other to hear. That wasn't even the bad part. The entire round we were basically being attacked by them! I had to carry a disc in my hand the whole time to slap them away. There were times we ran down the fairway trying to get away from swarms that came out of the trees. It was just crazy. I'm curious if it's like this at the other area courses too?
It's hard to throw a disc when you have these big ole bugs flying into your face while you reach back. What a crazy round.

I have my old Prodiscus backpack for sale. It's still in good shape. It's definitely seen a lot of use but has a lot of life left in it. It's royal blue. Holds 30+ discs and tons of stuff. It's a great bag. Looking for $110 local. I'll send pics upon request. Feel free to text me with questions. 913-953-2171

Found and Lost / Lost in Olathe
« on: June 03, 2015, 12:46:19 am »
I normally don't post lost discs on here but I've lost a few in the last week that I'm really hurting from. Last Monday may 25 I believe,  right before league at Lakeside I lost a dark red c-line PD2. Stamp is mostly worn off. I was on hole 9. It went right and either ended in the tall grass or in the little swamp. It was my favorite disc in my bag so I'd love to get it back.
A couple weeks before that I stupidly left two Kings laying on hole 18 at PC. These are probably a lost cause but it would be great to get them back. A pink misprint and a yellow one with AP dyed on the top.
Ill buy whoever finds any of these a beer. Or give you a different disc from my stash. Thanks!
