KC Juniors Open-Oct 1st at Fox Hill

Here is an old post from last year.  Price is $10 for Singles and $15 for Doubles.

For those folks that are new to disc golf, this event is not geared for just the competitive golfer.  I had someone ask me what this event is all about and I wanted folks to know that we are providing an opportunity for kids to play tournament golf  that is geared exclusively for juniors, but any skill level is encouraged to play.  You have to start somewhere and this is the event for your kids.  With 5 different age divisions and the top 3 in each division prizing out, your chances to prize out are promising.  Plus all players will win something disc golf related from the raffle.  So  here is the scoop. Where else can you play in an event that you receive a tourney disc, a lunch, raffle ticket,  ROF (in the past we hooked it up here as well), CTP, and a chance to prize out all for the price a $10 entry fee?  Sounds crazy, but with the help of many great sponsors we are able to pull off an exceptional players pack for a super low price.  We want to thank our sponsors Dynamic Discs, KCFDC and Innova for making this event be so special.  Our goal is to keep the price affordable  in order to attract juniors that might have only played in PE at school or occasionally with dad.

Most importantly, a majority of the event proceeds are donated to United Way.  Bill Lentz, the Fox Hill pe teacher and tourney co-director's goal every year is to raise $300 for United Way.  Fox Hill has hosted a Frisbee tournament and disc golf event in KC for numerous years and we hope to continue  growing this event and raising money for United Way. The flyer states that is  the 3rd annual KC Juniors Open, but this event started as a frisbee  and hula hoop event fundraiser for United Way is one of the longest frisbee events in KC's rich history going steady for 25 years.

 25 years later ...

Here is a little history of Fox Hill disc golf and the doubles event.  Fox Hill's first PE teacher was Coach Duane Hall.  He started up a disc golf double tournament 22 years, back in 1991.  Coach Hall brought the event to Fox Hill from his former school, so the exact number of years is not known at this point.  Every year the event has raised funds for United Way.  The event has always cost $10 with all proceeds going to United Way.  It is believed that this event has raised between $5,000-$8,000 dollars over the last 22 years.  Coach Hall used the resources that he had available in supply closet, like so many PE teachers.  He made targets using cones, hula hoops, and homemade PVC flagsticks.

Enter Coach Bill Lentz in  1995.  Bill picked up the tradition and continued to promote disc sports, disc golf, and ran the doubles event.  Folks have attended this event over the years to spend quality family time together, get some exercise, and raise funds for United Way.  Players did not complain about the types of baskets, the players pack, or the course set up.  They were simply out to have fun and huck some plastic.

Bill and I have been friends since we met at the Missouri Cupstacking Championship 11 years ago and he contacted me several years back about getting a disc golf course.  When we walked the land for the first time, I did not want to tell him how expensive it was going to be to clear all that land, grade it, seed it, spray it etc, but he remained optimistic.  Several years later, much to my amazement, Bill made Fox Hill a reality.  With thousand of dollars donated, thousands in machinery hours donated, thousand in time given by Messengers lawn care workers, Eagle Scout projects planned and finished, KCFDC work days,  Steve Dresser  running his skid, we now have  a real course to continue the legacy of Coach Duane Hall's doubles event.

Fox Hill Doubles will now be held for the 25th year and Kansas City will be getting a quality Juniors event that will coincide with the longest running doubles event in Kansas City.  Don't miss out....... come out and join us for a fun filled family day of disc sports at the Kansas City Juniors Open...

I sent several folks a text message who expressed interest in a work day.  I know that week days might seem weird to have a work day but a couple folks already agreed to this night and 3 of us is a good start.  I hope to push back fairways, raise ceilings, and maybe some spraying. It really needs some love and it would be nice to get it looking good for the rest of the summer.

Cold drinks provided by the club.

PM if you have any questions.  We could likely move some baskets for Joe as well.

I moved....

I really hope to get out there once school gets out and push back the fairways, raise the ceilings,  and spray for ivy/honeysuckle/russian olive/multiflora rosa.

Please let me know if you are interested in helping.  Wilbur looks very shaggy and needs some serious love.  I do not have the time like i used to give and the course is clearly showing it. I need help please and thanks.

I was not sure i was reading this correctly.  This came from All things disc golf web page interviewing Chris Kilgus i believe.  What is the open space referring the article is referring to?

There is a list of technical standards on your website that vary slightly from the PDGA’s standards. What are the changes and why the differences?

“The differences were based on talks with players, ADGT officials as well as ESPN. The main changes include changes in the the rim width allowing slightly larger rim discs as well as allowing discs to now have a open space in the middle of the disc. For live disc golf events to be attractive to new viewers and players we have to have some disc flights that are easily caught by camera. Making the specs more generous can potentially increase the flight time of a disc on open drives, invariably making discs fly father and easily tracked on camera.”

If you recognize this basket or know the owner, please private message me.

Thanks to the many disc golfers on this forum that have served our country in the armed forces and risked their lives in combat.  I thank you for your service  and sacrifices so we can live our lives freely and argue over such simple things like disc golf.

Tournaments / 2015 Kansas City Juniors Open- Oct 10th
« on: September 04, 2015, 12:41:27 PM »
The 3rd annual Kansas City Juniors Open is October 10th at Fox Hill Elementary.   We have a bigger and better players pack this year with an event shirt and disc for a ridiculously low entry price.   We have some major sponsorship this year from Dynamic Disc.

We need some help distributing flyers at various courses to help spread the word. If you have access to the kiosk please contact me. Our goal is continue to grow the event and provide a fun day of disc golf.

There is a Easter Egg Hunt on Sat, March 28th at Stocksdale park.  I was told to post this from the park workers that the course will still be open and that there should not be much interference with the course.  However, each year there are around 500+ cars and easily over 1000 folks in the park.  Parking ends up backing all the way up to the radio station if coming from the north near William Jewel.

Liberty, MO - Stocksdale Park / list of areas/things that need work
« on: March 08, 2015, 08:19:41 PM »
I am making a list to send over to the parks department tomorrow morning.  I would like to get a list of things that folks see that need to be worked on.  I know folks want benches and more trash cans... but i am thinking items for workdays ie  cleaning up brush here or there, pushing back woods in this area etc.

What do you  want to see improved?

The parks would like a punch list and I have several things, but i want to know what others are seeing that i might be missing.

Liberty parks and rec, ERTA and  myself are communicating/working on rerouting the trail near basket #17 basket in the woods  at BRC.  It will be staying in the left pin unfortunately until the trail  gets rerouted further down into the woods.  There was some confusion on the trail usage and it was believed to be a closed trail.  There has been ongoing discussions for rerouting with myself and Clay Lozer, who is the trail steward and member of ERTA.  We hope to get the trail rerouted soon and their is a scheduled work day in near future.  I will post the date when i am notified.

There are several trails crossings out there, but hole #17 pin in the woods does not give riders or golfers enough sight lines.  Thanks for being patient.  The course is still only a few months old and we are working out some kinks.

Anyone is welcome to come out and stop by our booth, KCFDC or not.  Thanks for  supporting disc golf and the KCFDC.
