General Banter / Des Moines Disc Golf
« on: August 14, 2009, 11:20:30 am »
I am headed up to Des Moines this weekend and have time to play one course.  Any suggestions?

I frequented the park before there was a disc golf course there and the park rangers are really overzealous.  My only speeding ticket came in SMP going 33 in a 25.......down a hill.  I thought I would play the course quite a bit b/c it is fairly close to me, but getting stopped every third or fourth round does not make for a very relaxing afternoon.

Where can you find a Star Whippet?  A Pro Whippet was my first disc and I have had one in my bag ever since.  I don't know what it is, but I love that disc.

Is there any major difference or preference for a Wizard over a KC Aviar?  I always hear people rave about the Wizard, but have never really heard any complaints.  Nor have I heard someone preferring a KC Aviar over a Wizard.

Although, a Wizard, an aviar, a pig, or any other barnyard animal still requires someone to give it a toss into the basket.

It could be the wider rim.  I love my Boss because of it, but I also have fairly large hands.  My buddy doesn't like it either because of grip issues, but he thought it was the rim and not the plastic.

Are they looking for volunteers once construction begins or too early to tell?

Tournaments / Re: D.U.I. "Down Under Invitational" March 22, 2009

This is a fantastic idea.  It's like the minor leagues of disc golf.  You get comfortable competing with people at around your own skill level and get ready for the Big Show.  I have only played in a couple of tournaments, but never all AM.  They were fun, but kind of intimidating at the same time.  If you had a point person to keep track of scores and standings, could a different individual run each event?  If this moves forward, I am in and will help where I can.

Found and Lost / Lost Firebird at Water Works
« on: March 07, 2009, 04:43:00 pm »
So me and a couple of my buddies were playing Water Works today.  On #8, two of us got our discs around the pin and the third guy put his way left (on the left side of #5 actually).  While looking for that disc, we let a foursome of high school or really young college kids play through.  We found the lost disc buried in the woods.  However, when coming back to the pin where the other group was finishing up, we noticed that they picked up my buddy's putter (which we got back after asking them about it) and started to pick up my driver before I said something.  We finished the hole and realized that my buddy's extra drive was also missing from around the pin.  We confronted the guys twice about the extra driver and they denied having it twice.

Knowing they took one disc and tried to take another right in front of us, we suspect they had no problem of snagging the extra drive.  But without bags and us being able to see all the discs they were carrying, they either a) stuffed it down their pants and none of us are going there or b) picked it up and threw it somewhere on the course.

With all that said, if someone finds a red Star Firebird at Water Works, it might be my buddies.  Neither of us remember what the weight nor do I think he wrote his name on it.  Thanks everybody.

General Banter / WSJ Article
« on: February 04, 2009, 09:49:22 am »
In the WSJ this morning, an article was reporting on "Ready to go" city projects around the country, including:

"Austin, Texas, could use $886,000 to build a 36-hole "disc golf" course, for frisbee tossing. It would be "environmentally and financially sustainable."

I have never planned, designed, or built a disc golf course, but over $400,000 for each course seems really expensive.  But I do like my frisbee tossing.

Has anyone played Shawnee Mission lately?  Are the flags still up to mark the tee pads?  It is supposed to touch 50 degrees today, so I might be catching the "flu" this afternoon.  Might be the last decent day for awhile.

Any update on the Shawnee Mission Park course?  There were rumors it might be in the ground at the end of October.

Does anyone know of a course at Blackbob Park?  Any info, reviews?

hey shawnee,

Email me at if you need anymore help.  Also, are the pin positions marked.  Think I might take portables out and try and play it.
