Shawnee Mission / Re: Next pin change-up?
« on: August 01, 2011, 10:22:17 AM »
I installed 14 new pins in mostly shorter locations about 9-10 weeks ago. To confirm, yes they are set short on purpose. This being determined after discussion with the Superintendent about what type of patronage they wanted to cater to.  SMP being what it is, a place where more families and younger players may find the course is  configured to be beginner friendly. When we want to tilt the course, it has the capacity to change several thousand feet, but that's not today.

The club EC hasn't communicated a word to me since the fall election last year. So its not a surprise some resources are not immediately available. This hasn't stopped the continuing progress on the course. New pins are good, and more improvements are planned.

Moving the baskets back to the tweener spots they were in for years before we got the new placements is an option though. I'll get with Jack to produce another key, after confirming this is fine with the park.

http://jcprd.com/special_events/dayinthepark.cfm

I invite anyone out to Shawnee Mission disc golf course this Saturday June 5th from 10-4 for Day in the Park.

This will be a great way for new players to come out and try the sport. Free Disc usage for disc golf will be available to check-out for the day

I'll be on site to give basic instruction and guidelines for playing disc golf. If you can come out and pitch in, all help is welcome.

Hope to see you there,
Dirk

Shawnee Mission / big ol tree fell on 2
« on: April 05, 2010, 03:21:55 PM »
I have made the parks department aware of the huge tree that fell on hole 2 covering the main fairway.
We'll get it cleaned up. Lucky the basket was in long spot or it may have been mangled.

Until then, this is forcing shots into a narrower gap on the left, so the hole is still playable and makes it kind of interesting IMHO.

The backfill of tee pads came up in my discussion with the Parks last week. They plan to address the back fill issue when the weather gets warmer. We're aware of the necessity, and thanks for your concern.

Shawnee Mission / New Pin Locations
« on: November 01, 2009, 06:05:33 PM »
Now that daylight savings has kicked off the Pins have been moved to new longer placements on holes 1,2 and 18. Hole 3, sorry not 4, has been moved to the short placement. 4 long is waiting to be set.

We are working with the parks department to get other locations set as well.

I'm all for keeping the good vibe of the worlds flowing as it was a great success, but critical reflection is also beneficial. KC is rich in courses and relationships enabling the growth of disc golf as a result of bringing the World Championships here. We are  flourishing as a result of local work and volunteering. I appreciate the family of PDGA volunteers that travel from event to event and have helped coordinate the growth of the sport, likely long before I even knew what disc golf was, but..

It seems the PDGA feeds on its own players to supply pro purses instead of major sponsors. What actions are happening with a National strategy to grow the sponsorships of this sport? Leaning on local hosts who repeat disjointed but similar patterns in different cities without any central strategic plan to grow purses and Media coverage is not effective.

So if the "The main mission of the PDGA is promotion and growth of the sport around the world." What did they do to support their primary objective this year?  Next year is it just up to the next town and club to figure out how to run the worlds media and sponsorship in their own way, like it was this year?

5 full time employees should have be able to get some major media coverage for the biggest PDGA World Championship in history. Sponsors like media coverage. Sponsors bring money to the purse, instead of feeding off dues that yield poor salaries for the sports best players.

From the Director of the PDGA

"The main mission of the PDGA is promotion and growth of the sport around the world."

http://www.pdga.com/discussion/showthread.php?t=30591&page=35

Yet the PDGA called Jack and Chap inquiring about press write ups for the World Championships?? Excuse me ? The PDGA is relying on local TDs to promote National coverage of the largest Disc Golf event in History?!! If the PDGA had done absolutly NOTHING to promote the Worlds, what are they doing with their time and our dues?

The only major media coverage of the entire event came from an article in the KC STAR from after being contacted by the local TDs.

I'd say the PDGA Administration has failed miserably at promoting this support in the press to increase awareness and sponsorship money. And now the pros are unhappy on the PDGA discussion board because their payouts dont even cover there costs to travel to the Championship... I don't blame them, the PDGA administration is ineffectual and is not doing the job.

Thankfully the logistics of the tourney were well handled by the local TDs and KCFDC to ensure that everyone from around the world had a great experience playing.

KCFDC and all volunteers did an outstanding job, we provided an environment for players to compete, flourish, communicate, party and realize the value of our sport and contributions.

My only critique is how the PDGA has not handled the task of promoting the PR of the sport. A few peeps from local newspapers that the local TDs contacted was all the coverage the World's received?? Really. The PDGA MUST do better at promoting this sport. This may have been the sports grandest moment, but only those who were there can truly appreciate what happened.

If ESPN or FOX Network 6 can cover bass fishing and bowling, surely the PR at PDGA could muster some viable coverage for the PDGA World Championships... beyond some DVD released months later in quite distribution when the excitement and dust has settled. Maybe they are just overwhelmed preparing for the next USDGC.

The locals in KC prepared the courses, established scheduling, lodging , entertainment in good measure. But in the grand picture the PDGA needs to be the ones promoting the sport nationwide. You can't rely on local clubs, trying to prepare for competition to establish a PR blitz in each different tournament.

Media coverage of our sport needs to be a much higher priority for the PDGA before this sport grows in sponsorships and recognition of the entire nation - dare I say the WORLD . my.02

Yes 1-9 are in. There are some issues with the texture on holes 1-4, apparently they cured too fast in the heat before they got brushed. We will be discussing ways to correct these surfaces in the near future. We hope to get 10-18 in next week.
