William Yates Elementary / Re: Frustrated with last outing

My frustration probably stemmed from my inexperience and the fact that everything was exactly as I expected it to be the last time I played but not so this time.

I'll go with the flow and expect some small bumps in the road and know that no matter what, we had a great time playing.

Now If I could just throw with more accuracy on my drives I'd be happier.  :-)

Took my 10-year old daughter to WYE the other night because the one in Blue Springs is just too tough for her and we were hoping for an easier time on an easier course.

I've done this course before, once with my wife and once with my son, so I was familiar with it.

Imagine our surprise when many of the holes had moved with no real indication of where they were now.  The pictures no longer matched and some had no picture at all, though one was replaced with a hand-drawn taco.  From a few of the tees you can even see 3 baskets, so which one should we use?

In the end we would just pick a basket and use it, even though it may not have been the correct one.  We made sure our fun overshadowed our frustration.

Is there any map anywhere that shows the correct current layout so as to prevent this frustration and confusion?

Also, what is the correct protocol for handling rule breakers like the 2 dorks we were following that were toting their 6-pack of buds?

Here's an interesting story...

My son (16) , youngest daughter (9) , and I went out to Young Park to try our hand at the new course this past Saturday. (Holy cow is it hard for us newbies!!)

As we were standing on the tee pad at hole one, another car pulled up and out piled a group of guys.  Since they each had a bag of discs, we knew they'd be better than us, so we kind of hung back so as to allow them to go first rather than hold them up.

2 of them got to the tee, and we said they could go first, but they said it was ok, we could.  As my daughter got ready to throw, one of them asked to see her disc.  We obliged, and he said something about recognizing what was on the disc's back.  He motioned to his friend and showed it to him asking him if it wasn't his.  He said it was.

Knowing that we'd found it, we were happy to return it, though not really knowing for sure that it was his or not.

He offered to trade it for one of his from his bag.  We tried to decline, but he insisted.  He handed my daughter a red disc, thanked us, and went to start at a different hole.  She turned it over, and the exact same thing that was written on the other disc was written on this one.

What a small world!

The guy seemed happy to have his disc back (must have been a good one for him) but was dismayed at one thing...Seems it was sun faded.  What used to be a nice purple was now a baby blue.

William Yates Elementary / First outing ever!

My wife and I went to William Yates last night to try our hand at our first ever round of Disc Golf.

It's incredibly obvious that neither of us have done this before based on our extremely short throws (despite our belief that we were throwing for great distance) and WILDLY off-base accuracy (curving to the left with a right-hand throw).

Hopefully with time both will improve. 

We had a blast, even though the dark overtook us and we only got 8 holes in.  We are definitely looking forward to trying again and, hopefully, getting our kids involved as well.

What a fun sport!

Beginners / Re: Total, total newbie....Where to start

Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions.

I have 4 kids (8, 10, 15 & 16) and am not sure they all will like this sport.  Since I don't have a ton of free money, I went out and only bought 2 discs, http://www.innovadiscs.com/discs/wolf.html, that can at least give me some idea of 1) how well I like this and 2) if they are even interested.  If they are, we can get more, but if they aren't, then I saved some money!

I had hoped to be able to get out tonight or this weekend to try William Yeates, but not sure the weather will cooperate or that my schedule has not already been filled by my wife.

Regardless, I'm looking forward to giving this a go and hopefully meeting some other players on the course (and hopefully they will at least hide their laughter when they see me playing!)

Beginners / Total, total newbie....Where to start

I played "Frisbee Golf" in a gym class in elementary school about 23+ years ago...but nothing since.

I'd like to try playing again, with the hopes that it would give my kids and I something to do together that we'd enjoy.

However, I don't even know where to start.  I have a frisbee (perhaps not the ideal tool, but it's a start) but don't know what else to do.

William Yeates is the closest course to my house, but do I just go there and play? Is it like a golf course where I need a reservation? How do I know what Par is?

Forgive my ignorance, but like I said, I'm a total newbie...
