I would like to have a local artist come up with a unique logo for the event, submit your logo to me via a PM.  I will pay for the one chosen.....

More information to come, but initially I am going to be the TD for NT side and Rick may do the Am Side of the event.  The NT side will include all PRO divisions this year (not have a separate "A" Tier for Masters et al) and will probably include only 4 rounds of golf this year for them.  Looking at "Big" Blue Valley Day 1, WW & Cliff Day 2, and Swope Gold Day 3 initially for these divisions.  More information to follow but I thought with the elections and the meeting tomorrow night, if you have any ideas questions, or ways to make the event better than this past year, please be prepared to bring them forward.

It takes our entire community to make this event work, and we need your help.  Just because my name is listed as the TD, it doesn't mean that I can do it all.  I want/need your input, and would love to have it.

Please let me know how you can help make this the best NT in 2013.

Thanks,

Jack

I was told that they have plenty of spots left, and they need disc golfers to join.  There are plenty of sponsors, so this may be a chance to play at Thornfield again, just need to get some players.

Cliff Drive / Would you play a PDGA League at Cliff in 2013?
« on: September 27, 2012, 04:17:09 PM »
I am thinking of making the Monday Cliff League a PDGA league, where you get points, etc for playing.  I would charge the extra $1 to be included, and if you don't want to be included it wouldn't be a requirement, unless you made the 3rd person that has a rating to keep the ratings alive.  This would be a way to track the ratings for the course, and a chance for you to get points to help with invitations to Worlds.  I think that it may help in some areas, but am curious what those in cyberland think before I request this denomination of the BoD.

The PDGA leagues allow for slightly lax from their rules, and enforcement accordingly, so though we would want to be a little more stringent on the rules, I wouldn't say that this is a tournament setting, but we would ask that while playing under the PDGA rules, you follow the appropriate guidelines.

If overwhelming support may drive more traffic to the course on Monday's, I am looking into it.  If this is a case where anarchists rue the day then I will take that into consideration as well.

I am uncertain if we can have part of the field pay for the PDGA part, and part not, because I think that we need to keep scores for all, but I will be looking into it, if so, it may be worth the extra $1 to get points all the time out here.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Jack

I will work on getting there by 5:00, but be ready to go promptly at 5:15.  I can't play still, but it looks to be a lovely night to enjoy the park.

If there isn't 4 of us to run league, thanks to everyone that played this year, and soon we will be posting in here about the workdays to upgrade the course.

Thanks,

Jack

Cliff Drive / Changes coming-2012/2013
« on: September 11, 2012, 10:12:10 AM »
Folks,

I am dead set on expanding Cliff Drive to a 24 hole course.  Although I may be silly for thinking this, but I feel that the right timing is now with all the activity that is being put forth on the park.  http://goo.gl/maps/NlTVf is the first idea of expansion.  Those push pins are locations that will see new pin locations.  Pink is where I want to put in new pads, and purple will be pin locations.   I am not entirely sold on location #C yet, and may alter instead to add an additional hole by #D-#F instead, as there is area over there to use.

I will start planning some workday accordingly, and will be needing your support and help!

Thanks,

Jack

Cliff Drive / tee by 5:30 League rest of the year-3weeks as of 9/10/12
« on: September 10, 2012, 12:47:46 PM »
We need to be off and running by 5:30 and playing in 3-somes to get done in daylight tonight and the rest of the year.  Only three weeks left.  I am uncertain if I will be playing tonight, but I will get things started out for people and will try to be there by 5:15.

Look forward to it.  I will also try to get #4 moved so that all pins are in the round one TLC configuration.

Thanks,

Jack

Interesting read....

By Jenny Cook — For Rattling Chains

A disc’s life starts off in a manufacturing plant somewhere in America, and for the ones that end up in our disc golf bag, each has a story as to how it got there.

Was it purchased at a local disc golf store, won at a tournament, given to you by a friend, or found on a disc golf course? Over time, some of these lucky discs become our go-to discs — our absolute favorites to throw.

So if that disc you simply can’t live without ends up in a murky pond, how long would you spend searching for it? The majority of the disc golf population probably wouldn’t hesitate to grab a rake and start scraping bottom, searching until the sun went down — or came up. I’ve even seen lost-disc flyers
posted at courses with “reward if found” written in big, bold letters.

Facebook and the social forums on dgcourseview.com also allow us to reach out to the locals with pleas, like, “I lost my disc on hole No. 4, in
the rough somewhere. Keep your eyes open for my Valkyrie please! Call if found. Reward!”

We love the plastic that’s in our bag and would do almost anything for it.

There can be risks involved in fighting to get our loved ones back. My husband once found himself in the position of raking the bottom of a pond in search of his putter — his favorite putter.

As he crossed a slick fallen-down log acting as a bridge, he slipped and landed on a branch — X-rays later that night showed he had two broken ribs and a punctured lung. Two weeks later, including three chest tubes and a
thoracotomy, he was released from the hospital. A full recovery has been made since then and up until this last July, his putter stayed in that unforgettable stench of a murky pond in Joliet, Illinois.

The blue Champion Rhyno was recently found among hundreds of other discs and, after a phone call, it made its way back into his hands. His favorite Rhyno now hangs on the wall. Two years later, the story is now complete because of that phone call.

There are other lost disc stories out there that, thankfully, do not involve losing our go-to disc.

Take an amusing thread at dgcoursereview.com. The story tells of a guy who received an e-mail from a girl with the subject “I have your Frisbee!” The e-mail included a photo of the disc being used as a plate for a sandwich.

“This is your mid-range driver in a Colorado parking lot!” the e-mail read.

Cornfields are not fun places to lose a disc.

At the time, she was on a post-grad rock-climbing cross-country trip and continued to send more e-mails with photos of his disc in different situations, such as in the car, on the beach or on an airplane.

After the second e-mail from her, the guy simply wished her well on her trip and asked for more photos. Two months later, the story continues and it is one of the more entertaining threads in the DG Course Review forums.

It sounds like he’ll get his disc back some day and hopefully he’ll post a photo of his reunion for all to see. The disc owner appears pretty laid back about losing this particular disc. Some plastic we’re OK parting with — temporarily or permanently.

Sometimes, you just have to say goodbye.

Many years ago, I was doing some driving practice at a friend’s farm in Grinnell, Iowa. This was before I knew what an anhyzer shot does in a head wind. I turned one over and watched it carry deep into the cornfield. I searched for hours for that disc. It was my first and, at that time my only, ace disc.

I later decided to call the search off and informally offer it up as a donation to the farm, knowing one day a brush hog would be by and would chop my little Pro Leopard into pieces. The friend I was visiting that weekend has since unexpectedly passed away, so in a sentimental way, I’m glad I never found that disc.

Sometimes, losing a disc is a conscious decision. A donation, so to speak. If you live in a state as nondescript as Illinois, any mountain top or canyon you find yourself near, say on a road trip, creates a great opportunity to really watch a disc fly.

Far.

If you’ve never done it, throwing a disc off a mountain top is a truly exhilarating sight and feeling. That’s why I always have a few DX discs in my hatch. Just in case.

I’ve held onto found discs of friends whom I have lost touch with over the years. I refuse to throw them or sell them, so they stay in storage. I may run into him or her again and be given the opportunity to return their plastic and maybe even rekindle a relationship.

Even new relationships or acquaintances can be born out of the return of a lost disc.

Throwing off a mountain can be quite fun to watch.

I once found a disc at a local course in Illinois. After a phone call, I found out the owner lives in California and had never been in my state. He lost the disc in Nevada.

How it ended up here is a mystery. For my minimal efforts to mail his disc back to him in California, he offered my husband and I a personal tour of Yosemite National Park, where he works as a park ranger. An unexpected but fantastic trade off! We hope to one day take him up on that offer.

You never know what can become of dialing the phone number on the back of a Destroyer you pulled out of the woods. At the same time you may never get a phone call on ones you’ve lost – or you may just hold onto hope that one day you will.

It’s completely out of our control.

Remember, too, no disc is worth a life. As innocent as your search for a lost disc seems to be going, always use caution and remember, at the end of the day, it’s only plastic. Even if it is a 10x Roc. Some stories will have happy endings, and others will not. But for the ones that do, isn’t it great to have been a part of it?

General Banter / -Non Disc Golf-NFL Suicide Pool
« on: September 04, 2012, 10:58:19 AM »
I am running a Suicide pool that we will be starting in week 2.

Cost is $100

Rules-pick one team to win their game each week.  You may only pick a team once all regular season.  As long as you win you remain active.  One loss, you are out.  If we go into the playoffs with more than one person left, all teams are open again, but again you may only pick a team once.  In other words, last year, if you picked the Giant's to win against Green Bay, and the Patriots against Baltimore, you would have been sunk at the Super Bowl....its very tricky in playoffs if people make it there.

We hope to have 20-30 people playing.  Which means the payout will be between $2000-$3000.

If you want in, please let me know and I will send you the information.  PM me at jlowekc@att.net

Cliff Drive / Continual improvements-always use a helping hand
« on: August 24, 2012, 08:52:30 AM »
Ok,

So Mr. Keizer has already started to expose the next new hole area as some may see on the pad area of current #18.  The plan is to make a hole through the woods after you finish current #17, the pad will be somewhere between the short pin and the corner where it makes sense initially, and possibly moving it to a deeper teeing area as we progress, more than likely having an alternate pad on this location.

If you have time and can help we will be needing it.  We will be removing a lot of the trash and honeysuckle out of this area and.....

To the North of the current BLACK practice basket we will be doing the same, but we will be working on 2 additional holes in this location.  I will go through probably next week and mark the trees that will be defining the fairway's on these two holes as well as the new one by #17.  Initially probably going to look at making this a 21 hole course for a little while, and we can evaluate where we go next.  I may look at a couple of other additions, and try to add 3 more to make this a 24 hole course, unless funding is approved for the additional course across Chestnut (which it very well may have some private funding that I am working on)

I do have a good idea of where to add an additional 3 holes, but the three discussed up here initially is probably where we shall start.

Please work with myself or Keizer on any removal of trees, removal of trash or honeysuckle though can be done at any time.

Thanks,

Jack
