Cliff Drive / Expansion-Interested in helping
« on: October 20, 2014, 11:35:28 am »
Looking to probably expand Cliff in its current configuration to a 24 hole course.  Are you interested in helping?

After many hours of conversation and discussion the realistic footprint is that cliff will remain pretty much the same with expansion to a 24 hole layout.

Will be looking at making current #7 in the short pin vanish.  We will be making the rocks on the right of the fairway OB, and adding more rocks, and trees along that stretch.

#17 will remain as it is, but with more trees, as will #13 and #14.

We will be working on a complete change of the trees coming up with a plan in place.

I have been working diligently at development of a plan that allows the usage of the bike trail and the disc golf course, and I think that all of us agree with the changes that were suggested.  The hope is that this minimizes impact on either of us with the great work that the trails have done in bringing in excitement, and the enjoyment that we have of seeing more people in the park.

Our gem is nice, but to show off the gem is always better.  To know that we have been instrumental in the development and improvements of the park over the past 15 years is also something that we can be proud of.  And finally our ability to engage and work towards a harmonious plan should be cool for us to all enjoy a diverse use of a great green space is wonderful.

Plans look like this:
The 2 new holes-they are partially done, we want to continue to clear it out, plant some dividing trees, and extending them both, initially the first one for the pin, and the pad on the second one.

Beyond hole #4.  Looking to continue around the long placement and wrap around the hillside with a shot about 270-320', then going down the hill a touch and coming back around towards #5 pad.  Initially I have always wanted to have hole #5 pad back further, but in this configuration we will be throwing down the slope of the hill towards it, a tricky placement shot that should be about 250-275' downhill

Beyond #6-going back back back, this hole will gain about 200' going the other direction from current long right placement, with valleys and ravines in place will play very uber technical on the shot.  We will then tee from the woods with a gut line shot about 300' through the woods heading up to the top of the grass to the northside of the road across from the lake.  We will then tee from that part of the land on the northside of the road and go towards current #7 from there.

So we lose short #7, an original hole from the days of past disc golf, we gain a value added partner in continuing to improve and positive activity within the park, and we will see more disc golf holes to play in the park that will create a uniquely interesting challenge to develop a course like very few, and in turn create better disc golfers in KC.

Pay attention as the leaves fall more work will be needed, and I know we can use a lot of help from a lot of people to get this done collectively!

Cliff Drive / Final leaguefor the Northeast Results
« on: September 22, 2014, 09:20:12 am »
Well after the HUGE turnout for league last Monday on Doubles BagTag night, tonight we will decide to play.......whatever the group that shows up to play decides.  We want to be throwing by 5:35, last time on a very similar configuration we were done by 7:08   Please be signed up by 5:25.

I wanted to do a BYOP doubles alternate shot format, but hey I am not sure how many people will do that.  So we will probably play in the "shorter" configuration of the course to have an 18 hole course set up ala "ace friendly" to see if anyone wants to grab a piece of the $561 ace fund out here.  Probably play in this configurations tonight:
1-to original short basket
2-from the road to #1 (ala LDO)
3-new hole in woods
4-other new hole in the woods
5-hole #2
6-Hole #3
7-Hole #4
8-Hole #5
9-Hole #6
10-Hole #7
11-Hole #8 (Hangar)
12-Hole #9
13-from the road by #18 pin to Blue Practice Basket

14-Hole #11 short Red practice basket
15-Hole #12
16-Hole #16
17-Hole #17
18-Hole #10

Please note that this allows us to flow quite nicely from #9 pin to the road, and gives less total walking by making #10 as the "last hole".  Since it is in the "long position" anyway, it will be a tough shot to begin with.

Cliff Drive / Doubles 9/15/14 @ Cliff
« on: September 09, 2014, 03:39:33 pm »
Lets get started no later than 5:35, registration by 5:30.  Random doubles, based on Bag Tags probably, but random this week, and then next week I would like to see us do an alternate shot doubles to finish the year.

Cliff Drive / Final PDGA League NE Monday night results
« on: September 09, 2014, 02:59:14 pm »

Results are in and sent off.  These are the final results for the league.  In order to qualify you must have competed in at least 5 rounds (1/2 the season) and then in stead of basing it off Par, or total strokes, it was based on the finish you had for each night you played.  I averaged the finishing spot and that was the determining factor for the results.  Based on this even though Jose played 1 more week Beckett Averaged a higher finish average, and coincidentally had a lower average.  Which was the case, with the exception of Dick Parker, who averaged higher than Peter Bures on score but finished higher on the average place.

I basically balanced it all out on on the final spreadsheet for Am/Pro, but put myself in Am Master since I typically played in Masters as did a few others, I didn't want to detract from the battle in the field, as Bill Shinoski won the tight battle for the lead on the NE League Night.  Bill played solidly and typically above his rating every week.  He also averaged a stroke better than Ryan and they didn't miss a league this season at all.  So it is a true apples to apples comparison for them.  Bill shot better head to head on only 4 of the nights, but the season was done for Ryan on a couple of nights where the LDO Preview was U-G-L-Y for Ryan as he shot a 70 to Bill's 59.  That clearly was the biggest factor there.

I may do something special for the winners, and I may not.  I don't know.  Really unsure at this point what to do, and playing with the stats was fun for certain, but this is where we ended up.  We also raised a little over $50 for the trees and this weekend the TLC will get that additional money deposited.  You DON'T want to miss the course, it is in FANTASTIC shape right now, and Drew will work hard so that the second round will be very different from the first one.  Come on and sign up, and get out to one of the best courses in the area, and see some great shots, either by yourself, or watch others as you stand in awe!

Cliff Drive / LAST WEEK OF PDGA LEAGUE-NE on MONDAY Sept 8th, 2014 @ Cliff
« on: September 04, 2014, 11:07:36 am »
In preparation of the Tree Love Classic ( ) we will be hosting the LAST PDGA league of the season on the Cliff Drive course.

The reason we are doing this is to ensure that the ratings are calculated in time for the USDGC format.  The last date for submission is 9/9/14, so I am catering to the will of the few in respect to this (you are welcome TD Dick Parker of the Wide Open) as it is important that the players have the correct and most recent rating.  Unfortunately due to the accident, and the time donated to run the Wide Open Dick has been scrambling to make the rounds needed to ensure a recent rating is provided for him.

So after this upcoming week we will go with the following format to finish off the year:
9/15-Random Doubles Best SHOT
9/22-Bag Tag round-players will be grouped by BAG TAGS (Lowest # paired with Highest # on the card, play it through) and then evenly distributed after the round.  If you don't have a KCFDC Bag Tag, will look at what other tag you may have to place you in a card.
9/29-BYOP-Bring Your Own Partner (preferred) or Random Doubles Alternate shot-we will alternate drives on the partners.  Still division based.

All of these formats will be utilizing the "new holes" and will be playing to the Hanger on #8.  We will also be skipping holes #7, and playing from #17 to practice #18 basket.

This should cut down on daylight concerns as well on the Alternate shot should be FASTER PLAYED.

Cliff Drive / 8-25-14 NE League-How will the course be set up?
« on: August 20, 2014, 09:17:31 am »
1-Practice Basket
2-1st new hole in the woods
3-2nd new hole in the woods
4-#2-Long (will move it)
7-#5-Long (will move it)
8-#6 right tunnel
9-#8 Hangar
10-#9 only
11-#10 Middle
13-#12 Only
15-#14 Long
16-#15 short
17-#16 Long
18-From 17 pad to Blue Practice Basket on long #18

This is a longer format, we will want to get going no later than 5:45 to really get done in time.  I hope to be out there by 5:40 so we will be cutting it close, but I know you can make it and you will want to have fun with this layout.  The Ace fund is sitting at $535, some good chances out there to enjoy for certain.

Cliff Drive / 8/18/14 NE League at Cliff Drive-Post LDO set up
« on: August 19, 2014, 09:41:14 am »

No ace was hit, it grows to $535.

We had 9 out on a hot hot night to play a version of the LDO layout that added a little teeth, but nothing to monumental.

Jose Ossa had the "heat on" during the round as he shot the best with a 51.  There was a tie then for second place between Dick Parker and Peter Bures with a 53.  Though Dick did have 6 birdies, he balanced that with a 5 and many a missed putt, as did Peter as well, so at times, yes Peter and Dick were short....HEEYY-OOOO!  It was balanced out though as the rest of the pro playing field all shot a 54 on the course......which speaking of 54's that happened to be the Advanced best in Ryan Westa who knew he shot better than an 825 that he did last week, in fact over 100 points better at a 936, and Bill Shinoski continues to improve week over week at Cliff.  Bill has only played below his rating 2x, and is averaging 19 points over his rating at Cliff.  I only wish I could say the same.

Missed a chance on the easiest layout of the year last night, and want to try it?  Want to get a better round rating on the course?
Wednesday Night Wandering League will be in the same format and with more people playing it will make for different ratings.

Next week we will play a continuation of shorter and "newer" holes as the daylight erodes, we play to have fun, and as football gets closer, we play to mot miss the games, but still get our disc fix on.

See you next week, or I won't that decision is yours.

Cliff Drive / Cliff Drive League Night 8/11/14
« on: August 11, 2014, 10:35:11 am »
We will be playing league at Cliff Drive tonight.

I am hopeful that we will be playing with the new holes and the complete Lion's Den Open version.  I will bring maps, but here it is in a nutshell.
1-playing Hole #1 to the practice basket
2-playing fro the road to the original long #1 basket
3-playing the LONG hole NEW #1 placement, yes LONG not short as we did 2 weeks ago, but LONG, it is pretty darn cool.
4-playing from the short placement of the new #1 last time as the teeing area for the new #2 for the time being to the new #2 pin on the hillside
5-playing original #2 (short)
6-playing original #3 only
7-playing #4 to the right (short)
8-playing #5 (short)
9-playing #6 (long right)
then go to #10 original-yeah sorry about the walk, we can discuss to see if we want to play 20 holes, and add #8 hangar and #9-group decision.....

10-playing #10 to the right shorter (middle placement)
11-tee from road behind first tree on #18 to practice basket (Blue)
12-#11 Short to practice basket
13-play from road behind tree on #11 to #11 long pin (ala Sully placement)
15-#13  Short or middle (I haven't decided yet on this one, leaning towards middle...
16-#15 Under the tree
17-#16 long
18-Tee from #17 pad to long #18 basket

If the new holes are "too muddy" to play we will play as described above using #8 to the hangar and #9 for the round tonight.

I am hoping to swing by and get everything moved before the round (moving #13 to the middle and #18 to the top if you have keys....) and then planting with temp the new pins on #1 and #2.

The short track and lots o'aces can be found and started tonight at Cliff.
