Cliff Drive / 8/26/13 League
« on: August 26, 2013, 10:32:49 AM »
Folks,

I am going to be a late starter at league.  I am meeting with some people from the ERTA and Cliff Climbing groups tonight to discuss putting in trails adjacent and in conjunction with the disc golf course.  I will be there at 5:30ish, but will be out walking around the area quite a bit, and unfortunately not able to play.

If I could get some help running league tonight I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Jack

Cliff Drive / Upcoming Workdays for Cliff Drive
« on: August 21, 2013, 12:44:08 PM »
Folks,

As I have indicated there are going to be more and more groups working to make Cliff Drive something very special.  We started a lot of the noticing on the park and though it has ha beauty way before we got there, our work in making progress towards the efforts of helping to reclaim the park are being met with swift action.  As such here are some dates with organizations that are planned to build and work on the park to improve the quality of it all.

All,

Like Jack said earlier - there's plenty to do without having to work through the Disc events....

IMPORTANT - PLEASE send Will or I any dates that you or your group has park stuff planned for.  This is another one of those situations that with everyone on the same page, we'll get a lot more accomplished in the long run.  I applaud everyone's vigor and enthusiasm, but we MUST start coordinating events like this between each other BEFOREHAND - especially in this Phase 1 of park redevelopment, ERTA, KCCC, and KCFDC user groups will all be intermingling very soon on the west side of the park.  Days like these are fantastic, but can be made all the more better if we can include everyone (ie: no prior scheduled tournaments, races, events, etc).  I know Jack would MUCH rather be out cutting and treating honeysuckle versus chucking discs :D

Coordinated work throughout the west end of the park will not only benefit us, but legitimize our redevelopment efforts in the eyes of the naysayers.  A lot more gets noticed by the average person when we have 75 people working under the same goal versus 3 different goals (ie: clean crags, build trail, eradicate honeysuckle - to me, even as an ERTA Trail Steward, these three ACTIONS should support the one overarching GOAL of Park Restoration).

For everyone's reference - below are our planned "Community Work Days" for this season.  Obviously, each group will have their own workdays in addition, but we want these days to rally the community around and get some major work done!!!

KESSLER PARK COMMUNITY WORKDAYS
*ALL SATURDAYS AT 9 AM
September 21 - 9 AM
October 19 - 9 AM
November 23 - 9 AM
December 21 - 9 AM
January 18 - 9 AM
February 22 - 9 AM
March 22 - 9 AM

Cliff Drive / 8/19/13 League
« on: August 19, 2013, 10:56:26 AM »
We will be playing in the Lion's Den Configuration tonight for PDGA league.  1 caveat is that I won't be moving back #8 sleeve again, so we will be playing a short shot at the #8 basket to break up the walk.  It will still be an Ace Run though!

I would like to have us all on the course by 5:50.

Thanks,

Jack

I am going to be walking through the holes in their normal configuration, but we will once again be using the Lion's Den Version of the course, which means that it will be a shorter version.  I haven't yet decided on the entire back side of the course for the shorter version, but suffice it to say it shall be a fun little round of golf.
#1-Clean the hillside of trash and honeysuckle if we can
#2-Mow (move pin short?  What say you folks?)
#3-Clean the green, clean all the rock to expose it better before the green as well as above it
#4-Mow and move to the right placement
#5-Mow? (I got an awful lot done there last night)
#6-Mow?  Unsure it really needs it, maybe continue to line fairway, and possibly lower off the pad greenery
#6-#7 exit ramp, mow/weedwack exit landing area
#7-Clean the side of the first hill and some of the back for the mini course, and the green up on top around both placements
#7-#8 clear the trail all the way to the rocks (I believe that Penny got some of that done already last night)
#8-clean all the way to the stage all the growth along the rocks, remove the downed tree branch (started)
Stage area-Clear all the greenery on the rocks visually distracting, all the area around it cleaned up
#9-Clear out towards the lake view, really open that area back up quite a bit

I need to repaint the Teeing areas from the road, please remember that the LDO version will be using a lot of the road for teeing areas, there is one by the practice basket, and then along the road from basically the tree before #18 pin all the way up so we don't want to park on that side unless further down the road towards #18 pad.  We will NOT be using #17 basket or #18 pad in this configuration, so you can park down along there.  We will be using #10 tee pad though, so you want to stay South of that if you can.  We hope to have the parking area pretty well marked all the way, but please do look for the NO Parking Signs, and once they stop, you should be able to park along the roads accordingly!

I think that we will be out there on Saturday from probably 9-2 or so, we will be working on these items and then also finalizing the 18 hole Mini disc Golf course as well so that we can get it all set up and ready to go for everyone to enjoy during the event as well.

Feel free to visit the website www.lionsdenopen.com for more information about the event coming up!

Water Works / September 21-Work Day
« on: August 06, 2013, 04:48:20 PM »
The Briar Cliff Neighborhood Association is tentatively planning a work day from 9-1, I would love to see a bunch of disc golfer out there to over shadow the folks that they have.

Please plan on this and I will get confirmation from them in the next few days, they were verifying the date at their board meeting tonight.

This group is spearheading a lot of energy in the park, and we want to show them that we are the force there, that we are the stewards of the park, and that we claim the park as one of our most sacred places to play.

Please plan on attending and helping out if you can accordingly.  I believe that this is Shunga Weekend, so I may be out myself, but would ask that if you can help, you do so and bring a friend for the morning as a sign of solidarity towards the betterment of the park!

They plan on removing dead branches, picking up trash, removal of dead limbs, etc.....

Thanks,

Jack

Blue Valley / 8/5/13 league night @ Blue Valley
« on: August 05, 2013, 08:32:05 AM »
I will be there to get it started, but I have a community meeting that I must attend tonight at 6:30 for some matters regarding some recent grants that I wrote in the area.

So league will be on, and I will leave the prize $$ with someone there to payout at the end of the night.

Ace fund moves with this league so it is at $405 heading into tonight.  I unfortunately did NOT have a chance to get out there on the wet turf and move baskets yesterday.

Cliff Drive / League 7/29????
« on: July 31, 2013, 12:27:54 PM »
Since I was in Southern Mississippi instead of Houston I have no way of telling if league happened out there on Monday or not.  The crickets chirping in here made me wonder though.

Next week we will be at Blue Valley playing the last "first Monday" of the season (September Holiday=no league & October=leagues done for me)

I will try to see what is out there to move some of the pins around, but we will be playing from the "long Course" though it will probably be in a few shorter locations....thinking out loud here...#1.....#3......#6......#8......#9(middle).......#18 I will probably move to their shorter placements.

Cliff Drive / Northeast League July 15th 2013
« on: July 16, 2013, 09:17:41 AM »
Someone drove their other car in today to work and left the worksheet in the other vehicle.

I know that Eric Kuitunen from Minnesota came in and shot the hot round of 51, stepping over CD who had a solid 52, Eric's sole blemish was a 5 on the island #17.  Jose came in third with a 57, I shot a 58, as did George Rousis, Beckett a 59, I think that Melrose shot a 61, Kelly Warren shot a 63, Edwin a 68, and Tom Jones a 69 after coming back to disc golf after 10 yrs.  His "newest" plastic in the bag was a couple of Blizzard discs he bought last week, otherwise he had this thing called a Champion Edition Firebird in his bag as his latest disc....Had some trouble over powering the blizzard, but I think that he is going to be around again for awhile now!

Ryan Keck shot a solid 57 in the Adv men and Bill Shinoski wasn't able to beat that on the night, so Ryan took home top honors in that division for the night.

Once I get the information accurately from the element, then I will upload this week and last week's results for the ratings.

It was a good night to be out golfing!  I hope you made it out, the rest of the week looks to be a hot one!

I will update last weeks scores tomorrow after we play again tonight at Cliff Drive.

Thanks Jose for running league.  I should be there by 5:30 and we want to start quickly to play it through.  I will see if I can get back #14 and #16 baskets.

Cliff Drive / League-7/1/13 @ Big Blue Valley

http://www.pdga.com/tournament_results/105302/97720892

You know you want the results in from the league last night.  It was an absolutely wonderful evening to play disc golf.  If you didn't come out to play on the big course, I hope you got out to play somewhere.  It isn't often that you can sit there and think, its July 1, and I am not feeling like I am in a furnace with the heat.  Slight wind out of the N-NW, made for some wonderful breezes to elevate the disc just so slightly.

We only had a couple of handfuls out there but the weather was just beautiful.  The one issue that transpired was that the BEST score of the night came from that Am Field.
Pros-
CD-70=$10 (He shot 39 on the Front 9 and a 31 on the Back, he learned to "step down" on the back nine....)
Lee Killian-71=$2 (he left before he could get the money, and it back to where it came from the Tree Fund)
Scott Mellrose-72=Really, I didn't shoot under 70?  I need to be better at math
Jack Lowe-73-Yep, 70-71-72-73 bottom of the pack in the open field tonight......

Then there were the Am's
Ryan Keck-69=$9KcKash-Can I change my division now that I know what I shot, what do you think the rating will be?
Rhys Kruger-78=$7KcKash-No this isn't for me, Scott beat me clearly, whats that, You didn't play Am, ok then...
Thomas Davis-79=Man this course is LONG, who sent me out here to do this?
Jason Gillow-89=I know, I know, I should be playing better but damnit Jack when are you going to remember my name?

With a few more in the Ace Fund, it goes up to $379 next week.  As I will be in Emporia for the Am Worlds, if someone else wants to step up and run league, I wouldn't be opposed to allowing them to do so.  It should be back at Cliff, and there is a solid mix of short/long right now out there.  Should be good playing!

Thanks for reading!
