Club Archives / Re: 2008 KC Wide Open
« on: June 09, 2008, 07:40:58 PM »

I can see if someone has been vacillating for a year or so bouncing back and forth not having any success, or very little, as a pro to test the waters by backing off at an event like this. But I don't see that in this situation. This guy hasn't played am in over two years and has had genuine success as a pro just this season. He cashed at an A tier in Saint Louis just a month ago.

I just gave some thought as to who Michael Robinson is and now I recall talking to him on several occasions over the weekend. He's a nice kid with a huge arm, hence his success at BV. I guess he has his reasons for moving down to advanced for the Wide Open but I honestly can't imagine why he did it. What was he trying to prove?

(dumb question - I suppose he proved it now didn't he....)

having spent some time chatting with mike this weekend, i can say that i didn't think that he saw himself as sandbagging...i know that's pretty weak, but he seemed to really think that he was in a funk, and just not playing well enough to play open.

and i do agree with chappy, if the final round would've been played on any course other than BV, i don't think that mike would've won.  heck, mike probably didn't think he would've won either.  i still think he should've played open though, and you can bet he heard me running my mouth about him sandbagging every time i ran into him.

though your comments flatter me timmy, i still have a rating of 875, which actually enables me to play Rec in PDGA tournaments.  I've never come close to winning anything sanctioned and I don't think that I have won anything non-sanctioned for that matter.

in closing, if i'm a sandbagger, then everyone that beats me at every tournament is a worse bagger than i am ;)

I like to throw a thumber on that tee shot.  Takes the wind out of play.  You may not get all the way down the fairway, but I can usually get past the really large tree that hangs over the fairway.  I'd much rather have a 100 foot upshot to secure my 3 than go down that nasty ass hill.

Don't be hating Gunboat!  You could've made that 15 footer to push all those skins!

with the normal headwind on that hole, i'd say a Roadrunner is probably not the disc to throw, unless you aim it at the large tree in 13's fairway.

Roadrunners are VERY flippy brand new.

Not much sandbagging around here really.

If you won a bunch of rec or intermediate tournaments and didn't move up, you'd get harassed pretty much non-stop until you moved up.  Though I will say that once the PDGA revised the ratings brackets, we did see some guys around 910-920 that moved back into intermediate.  no biggie, just more donating for me and my 875 rating!
