General Banter / Be Thankful For What You've Got
« on: October 14, 2013, 09:05:38 AM »
Though you may not drive a great big Cadillac (gangsta whitewalls, TV antenna in the back, etc.)... You may not have a car at all... But, remember, brothers and sisters, you can still stand tall. Just be thankful for what you've got. ;D

I wanted to share a few pics from my recent vacation to my hometown of beautiful, sunny, Detroit, Michigan. While the Detroit metro area does have its share of quality disc golf courses (Firefighters Park, Oakland University, Stoney Creek, Toboggan, etc), the two courses located in Detroit city limits, proper, are totally f*#%ed.

This is the one basket at Detroit's Laskey Park that hadn't yet been stolen. Yes, the other seventeen baskets are gone. The basket had been broken from the inner sleeve, right at the welds. Eric Minton said I should have taken it, and I think he is probably right, but I left it for the scrappers instead since it's just a Discatcher!

What really sucked was that I had taken my best friend's younger brother up there to show him how to play, and then the thieves and vandals (once again) ruin it for everyone. This is the kind of thing Detroiters have to put up with on a regular basis-- I got to come back here to KC after it was all said and done, but Perry and his buddies have to live through this kind of crap every day --it's just sad to think about.

The next day, I went down to Belle Isle, a Detroit city park, which is a big island on the Detroit River and probably the closest thing to our Swope Park in terms of being a place where folks can hang out on the weekends, have picnics, barbecues, and recreate. In the midst of Detroit's bankruptcy proceedings, Belle Isle was recently handed over to the State of Michigan and will become a state park for at least the next 30 years. Eventually, this handover should provide Belle Isle with the money and care it needs to be restored to the gem it once was, but it remains a shell of its former self for now. Once again, I had hoped to geta round of disc golf in, but it was not meant to be.

The Belle Isle Disc Golf Course is an ongoing endeavor at the moment, or so I'm told. It sits on what used to be the Belle Isle (ball) Golf Course.

They have a pro shop, even, but it was closed and in disrepair. I thought the modified "Detroit D" logo on the door was pretty cool.

Check out the grand entryway leading onto the course!

The course actually had a few baskets; Chainstars, I believe, as well as benches. But the entire course looked like this:

So anyway, the message here is to be thankful for having such a great parks system here in KC, and great disc golf courses too. I know, we already knew that, but this drives the point home even more, at least for me. Take care of your courses! 8)

Guys I'll bring the baskets back once my putting game improves. ;D

Just got back from moving the front 9 baskets. It is NOT MUDDY like you might think! Just damp is all! Looks like a very cool setup out there for this tourney, and with the flex start, there's still time for you to make this event a part of your weekend. The course is set short so should be a smooth and laid-back time for all. 8)

Elmwood has a north side? I thought Elmwood ran north/south. Gosh, now how am I supposed to avoid these break-ins with such fuzzy info? ;D

Maybe do TreeLoveClassic at swope next year?

Nope, it's gonna be at Cliff next year too. Once the initial trees are planted at Cliff (next year being a target for that as well), I believe the plan is then to expand the Tree Love Classic to other courses, or at least to benefit other courses.

Good news: I have a coworker with a spade and auger, and he has offered to assist us with the labor part of the tree plantings.  8)

Cliff Drive / Re: Hey Jack - Cliff Drive needs to try this.

Yeah right. They'd be stolen, cooked, and eaten within a couple days. Goat meat is a favorite of both the African and Mexican folks in the surrounding neighborhoods.

Yep, you can play big BV, or BV Lite, or shrink it down even more by playing BV #1, then the Junior 9, then BV #3-#10 back to the parking lot. 8)

Water Works / Re: Waterworks League 09-12 TEE @ 5:30
« on: September 22, 2013, 10:46:35 AM »
The results are always posted, go to WW on thursday around 5:15, play a round of golf, and then check with Utz. You can write 'em down yourself. No Facebook/Google/I-phone/pad required.  :D

Yeah, because that's the way it ought to work. Just saying, it's nice being able to regularly check league scores on here, kinda like checking scores in the sports section of the paper every day.

I agree, Ryan. Sure would be nice if league scores were posted regularly again on here and not on Facebook or Google or whatever.

Tank, you sure he only had 8? ;D :D

i love the food truck idea as someone who is pretty much stuck there thru lunch.  i thought keizer had a food truck lined up to come by last yr or the yr before, but i never saw one.

Yep, tried to get La Carreta out there but they never showed. Honestly, it was a last minute thing and I'm not sure they took me seriously since I didn't have any literature or anything to give them.

Great weather and good times, although I was unable to overcome the disappointment I felt upon realizing that #13 would be in the long long long long long long long long long long long setting for both rounds... >:( :-[ :'( >:(

As much as I love this sport, I'd like it better if tournament play wasn't at such a slow and grueling pace. The first round started sometime after 9am, and I left after 4pm with half the second round still to play. Just seems like the sh1t wears on for far too long for only 36 holes of disc golf. I don't know how you all can stand it to be so slow! ;D

Anyway, enough whining and b%tching out of me for now. Sure seemed like this was the most successful TLC yet and it appears to only be getting better. Thanks to Drew for spearheading this and to DD for their flawless logistical execution, once again. And also thank God for the lovely weather and for the trees we still have left on the back 9. 8)
