General Banter / Re: Colorado Courses
« on: April 09, 2014, 09:28:36 AM »
I stayed in Colo. Springs for a week last summer and played Cottonwood Creek every day. It's a challenging course with a mix of long and short holes all packed in a small area in a very busy park (Walkers, Joggers and Bikers.)

I couldn't believe how dangerous it was. The RHBH line on a couple holes is right over the walking path, to hyzer back in bounds again. There are so many walkers and bikers, I had to wait a minute or two on a few occasions.  The week I was there, course gossip was about how someone hit a baby carriage being pushed along the walking path.

Also, hole 4 is a wide open shot that has a good chance of landing next to hole 1 where there may be people putting. I remember there being other areas where you're throwing toward other golfers as well.

It's fun, but be careful.

I'll be there around 5:00.  Looks like a good time.

Found and Lost / Re: Lost Saint Hole 2 at Rosedale Up Top

This was finally returned to me.  Lost on hole 2, someone found it on hole 15.  How does that happen?

I think I spotted one of Kansas City's own in the background, surrounded by some of the top ladies in the sport; looks like the best seat on hole 16.

Found and Lost / Lost Saint Hole 2 at Rosedale Up Top
« on: February 27, 2014, 11:39:44 AM »
I flipped a Saint into the woods on hole two up top at Rosedale.  I scoured that whole hillside and the DU fairway below and couldn't find it.  It looks like the picture below but perhaps a more brownish red (which makes it hard to see in dead leaf litter.)

The disc also has my name and number on the back.

I am imagining an interesting concept for the artwork.  It could be an overhead 3/4 view of Kansas City except all the famous landmarks and buildings are falling over or on fire because of a severe earthquake caused by two giant hands reaching down and tearing a huge gash in the ground right in the middle of the city!

Out of the flaming sinkhole emerges a huge disc golf basket, and in the foreground of the image a giant flying disc is spinning through the sky right at it.

I wouldn't call myself an artist, but here's a rough sketch:

I like the idea of having bigger score boards to work with, or a cheap projector to display it up on a large surface.  Seemed to me that there was a lot of congestion under the pavilion due to players simply trying to figure out what hole they were starting on.
The future is here....  Most people attending the tournament have a smart phone; even Tibetan monks have smart phones.  The idea that we all have to come within visual range of a physical marker board (Score Point) to figure out what hole we must report to is Neanderthal.  The next evolution of our local club should be to make important information, like this, more easily available through mass communication like email and smart phone apps; this way, nobody would have to jockey for position in a crowded pavilion to see instructions, we would just gather around the nearest smart phone and could report to our holes with more efficiency and confidence.

The amount of time needed to update the Score Point sliding paper cards into slots is enormous.   In the 21'st Century, there are better ways to handle the spread of information.  For starters, most of us are familiar with how to use bulletin board systems like this  for gathering information about leagues and tournaments.  The time spent for the mundane task of volunteers sliding physical paper cards into slots on a physical marker board  could be better spent updating records online  for the benefit of all tournament participants.

Our sport is growing exponentially and the technology that serves as its backbone should grow accordingly.  There is no excuse for an lack of information in the Information Age.  Let's stop relying on Score Points so much and grow our sport through apps and BBS system information spreading.  What do you think?

If there was no beer, how many fewer people would have registered?  We can't just look at the donation cup to tell us how much the donated beer was worth.  Example:
Quote
Hey, want to register for ice bowl?
Nah, I'm doing something else.
But Cinder Block is donating beer!
You should have said so earlier, count me in!

Was the problem with the PA system location or tone?  I remember thinking it seemed like the bass was turned up too high for just voice, which made every announcement sound muddled.  If the PA system had equalizer adjustments, perhaps turning the bass down might have helped?

Bathrooms not a big deal for guys.  Ladies need to check out the Magic Cone Female Urination Device.
It's a disposable funnel shaped, waterproof cardboard device which allows women to urinate in a standing position without any hassle.

Not a bad idea for TDs to include in player's packs for women's divisions this year.  It should even be possible to get a batch with custom logo or tournament artwork printed on the side.

I just checked PDGA and my performance in this tournament isn't reflected in my rating.  It's not even listed as a tournament I've played.  What gives?

I had a great time.  It was my first time playing the lake course and second time at PC.

Here are some things I noticed as a first timer at the lake course:

  • The rolling terrain, mature trees and lake in the background made it a beautiful place to spend the morning.
  • It's a lot of land to keep groomed and everything looked well kept.
  • I love that disc golf permanently took over land that club-swingers failed to manage effectively.
  • I found it challenging that many tee pads were tucked back in a shady nook which eliminated angles I would have preferred to use for my drive
  • It seemed like the tee pads were smaller than I'm used to practicing on at Rosedale?

Edit:

And congratulations to Andy for winning Intermediate.  We were on the same card first round at the lake and he was frustrated after missing a few putts.  Way to shrug it off and kill at PC!

Found and Lost / Lost: Cliff Drive #4 Pink Katana
« on: August 18, 2013, 03:23:41 PM »
My buddy Wayne lost his pink Katana somewhere on the cliff side to the left on Cliff Drive #4 during the Lions Den event.  Please reply if found.

Thanks,

David

Rosedale / Re: 16's fairway
« on: June 28, 2013, 01:38:50 PM »
Could some club money be used to purchase a hot air balloon?  Charging people for rides would generate cashflow, and when the balloon is not in use, It could be kept on the fairway of 16.
