Liquid soap doesn't work. Ticks can go several hours or more without oxygen, so suffocating them isn't a good method. Use either tweezers, or special tick removing tools to remove them.

The best thing for tick prevention is a Permethrin based clothing spray. Deet isn't very effective for ticks. But Permethrin works very well. Ticks will literally die just by coming in contact with clothing sprayed with Permethrin.
