CD, sounds pretty cool!  Spring is around the corner, so that must mean a tournament every weekend!

I'm glad you're more excited about it than my wife! Though I need the practice for The Memorial, and I hate to miss the DUI...

Who has the scoreport? and blank scorecards?

I thought the memorial was the same weekend as wyco?

Oh, and also added you to the calender.

General Banter / Re: Kansas City Bushwhacker's League Test
« on: February 25, 2008, 02:22:09 pm »
You only play against the people in your group for tags that week.  Tags will work just like they do in our leagues now; the person with the lowest score gets the lowest tag, and so on.  However, those scores will be handicapped based on your league handicap, which gives everyone in the group a chance to move up or down.

Handicaps theoretically knock down those 1000 rated players to the point that they've got to shoot 7-10 strokes better than the person they're playing.  Adam Olson (1010 I think) was a sub in the original league, and he gave up 5 strokes on a night he was playing a good opponent, but probably gave up 8 strokes to the median player.

We could theoretically cut the people into an A pool and a B pool, and pair members from each, but how do you decide who is in each pool?  There will be people on the cusp that could be in either, and there will surely be a wide range of skills in each pool.  As a result, a 1000 rated player could end up with a very talented am.  Also, some of the lower rated players in the A pool won't have a higher rated player as a partner, which could turn some people off.  Random doubles seems like the way to go to allow for the least complaining.  Plus, the handicaps have worked well for this league for 5+ years now (I think they're on 7 or 8 actually), and have anywhere from 800 rated females to 1000+ touring players playing against each other.

Subs pay for themselves.  I think we'll have to raise the price from what the original Bushwacker league in the IC/CR area does (they pay $2 a week) because I think it would be nice to actually have a decent payout.

As for holding the league on other league nights:  I think your potential to cash if you don't play all 6 weeks is virtually impossible; we won't pay anything out until the end.  Hence the reason for finding people that will commit for the entire 6 weeks.

This league is actually a traveling league between 3 courses in Cedar Rapids and 3 in Iowa City.  I think Des Moines has a similar league now as well.  Down the road, I'd like to have it move from course to course, but for this trial run, I think 1 or 2 courses would be best.

General Banter / Kansas City Bushwhacker's League Test
« on: February 23, 2008, 10:18:44 am »
I mentioned running some sort of actual league (in leu of the mini's that we currently run).  As a test league, I would like to run this thing for 6 weeks, from the middle of march until the end of April.

The league is a random draw handicapped doubles league.  This means that the partner you draw at the beginning is your partner for the entire 6 weeks.  Handicaps get added at the end of the 2nd week.

Each week, you compete against one team.  The top rated player on team 1 plays the top rated player on team 2.  The lower rated players on team 1 plays the same on team 2.  The winner of each "match" based on a handicapped adjusted score gets a point.  The lowest cumulative team score with a handicap adjustment gets a point.  So you can win a total of 3 points each week.

The league I'm basing this on has subs and a sunday makeup league, but that won't be implemented for this test.  If you miss a week, you're team will most likely lose 2 points (one for your match, and 1 for the culm point).  I need people to commit for the full 6 weeks to see how much people like this format.

For the test, we'll pay out all the money at the end of the week.  Ace fund will be extra, and optional.

The ideal will be to make this a moving league from course to course, but for now, I think we'll pick between 1 or 2 courses.  Since this league will most likely coincide with another weekday league, we'll obviously not consider that course in the rotation.

So I'd like to hear what people have to say about this format.  I'm more than happy to run something like this, provided I can get some golfers to commit.

Rosedale / Re: Rosedale Workday March 1st 2008

I think Jay is in charge of that course.  He discussed some plans last night at the EC, but I'm not sure if he's got anything scheduled.  I think there's traditionally been a work day before/after the DUI, which is coming next month.

Bag Tags / Re: 2008- What number ya got?

While I would be in favor of something like that occasionally, that really takes out the match play element out of the round.  For example, I watched two of KC's better players battle for tag 3 last year.  Now lets say that in my group, tags 2, 21, 35, and 70 were in play.  The two previously mentioned players may take some more risk, knowing that they're only playing each other for tag 2, and the loser would end up with 21 (or even 35 if they blew too many strokes by being aggressive).  However, if all tags are in play, then 3, 5, 9, 13, and 20 are also in play, so you'll be more conservative, maybe end up with 3 or 5, but probably with a tag better than 21.

I think it would be cool if one league a month was an "all in" league for a reshuffle.  This would be an unannounced thing, of course, therefore not allowing the good tags to sit at home 1 week a month.

Tournaments / Tournament Sponsor
« on: February 15, 2008, 09:36:07 pm »
I just found out that Gorilla Boy Disc Sports will be offering up 10 tournament sponsorships this year.  Gorilla Boy is a company (actully, it's one guy named Chris) that makes some pretty nice disc golf bags.  I've been carrying one now for two years, and am quite impressed.  He's a really stand up guy who has a bit of a cult following on some of the discussion boards around the web.  So if you've got a small event going on this year, and are looking for some merchandise sponsorship, you should give him a shout.

his website is http://www.gorilla-boy.com/, and his email address is grlaboy@yahoo.com.

General Banter / Re: Any new ideas for Monday night league?
« on: February 12, 2008, 10:17:25 am »
I'm trying to get all the details, but there's a league that I was a sub in in the IC/CR area when I lived in Iowa City.   One of the things about a league for any other team sport (softball, pool, bowling, etc) is that you've got to show up for consecutive weeks to compete for consecutive weeks.  So this is how the Bushwhacker's league works.

    • The league begins by doing a random draw to assign partners.  This is your partner for the entire duration of the league.
    • The league rotates between courses.  I think Bushwhackers played 6 different ones (Thomas, Jones, Shaver in CR and Turkey, Sugar, and Peninsula in IC)
    • You get assigned a handicap.  This handicap is figured on a scratch score of 50.
    • Each week, you "play" another team.  The two opposing players with the highest handicap play each other, and the two players with the lower handicaps play each other.  The handicaps determine the amount of strokes you give to the opposing player.
    • For each "match" your team wins, you get a point.  There's a 3rd point awarded for lowest cumulative scores after handicap.
    • If your teammate cannot show up, you have to have a sub.  Subs can get a handicap like any other player by playing at least 2 rounds.  If you don't have a sub there that day, there's a makeup round on the same course on Sunday (they called it Church).  I think it would be easier if that person just forfeited their point that week.
    • At the end of the year, you add up the points, and there's your ranking.
    • There's a fee to join the league ($14), then a weekly fee ($2) plus an optional ace fund ($1).  There's also normally a side game going on for $5 that pays out that night. They play 18 weeks, which comes to a total of $50.  They give out tee shirts and mini markers for the league fee, and have CFR fund raiser discs for sale each year.

Anyways, it's something to consider.  I would be more than happy to run a league like this if it sounds like something people would be interested in.
