phlltttt, who cares, its your own ego that makes you play where you should, the whole ratings thing in my mind is silly anyway, but then thats why I shoot over a 300 point spread in the whole scheme of them.

So you're saying the reason you play anywhere in a 300 point range when you play is simply because you think the ratings are silly? Interesting...

What does the casual, and I mean true casual, player need that the PDGA even needs to offer them? More courses? Those are being taken care of already. Stricter rules about equipment? No... I was just trying to think of anything else they would want from the PDGA. The growth of the sport, I'll admit, rests largely on the increased awareness among casual players, but that can't be without the success of the professional tour. In order for the sport to be seen as a legitimate sport there needs to be a way for the professionals to still be professional.

I know a large part of what the PDGA does is for the amateur. I'm sure there is more the PDGA can do for the amateurs but I'm also of the opinion that that happens on the coattails of the pros. Hopefully by these pros helping themselves, which is a very pessimistic way to look at what they will be doing, will help the ams just as much.

Doug, I don't think you can blame it on Cale or Avery that Jack didn't get elected. I voted for all three (I'm pretty sure we got three votes, right?).

And sometimes resumes are more than words on a page. Heck, if anybody could either read what someone did or watch their passion for what they do, which do you think they would choose and would be the best way decide who is more qualified? These guys have dedicated A LOT of their time to the sport. It could be argued that they have the most to gain from growing our sport and likely they will aim to do just that. And before I get the argument "they won't know how to do that even if they tried"... simple answer is that I'm sure that they do, not only from their experiences travelling and being ambassadors for the sport but they will also have the benefit of meeting a variety of people with a variety of ideas about just what is the best way to grow the sport. I say we shouldn't take our disappointment about Jack not getting elected on Cale and Avery. Just because our guy lost doesn't mean we can't be excited about the future of our sport and it doesn't mean we need to immediately start belittling OUR world champion, Avery Jenkins. He won it here, he should hold a special place in our hearts because of that.

Cliff Drive / Re: Sunday Drive at Cliff Drive - August 1st

football draft on 9/5 for me, so I am out on that week.  Having the ability to throw over 450' is a HUGE advantage at Blue Valley.  See last year's worlds, Avery shoots 53, second place Thuggy shoots 63.....who throws farther?  I'll agree that there are some good holes at BV, but there are also just some long shots that reward throwing far.  Which is OK.  But the balance is not where I would like to a see a course all the time.

I hope to help out the entire park and create a new design or two with the idea of keeping that layout as we have, and creating some obstacles as the designers had in mind, and allowing everyone to enjoy the park for disc golf, which it currently does not.

If you think it does, you are not going there enough.  THe disc golf course is neglected within the park to the tune of if we are lucky 50/wk.  I'd personally put the number closer to 21/wk.  Cliff Drive is now seeing close to 150/wk in traffic.  Its a longer course, with challenges for all levels.  Its a destination course, its not the only one close by, and you want to play disc golf if you are there.  That is what Blue Valley should be, a destination, right now its a thought.  The baskets and timelines are identical, but the outcome is vastly different.  I hope that we can create enough interest in the next year or two as I create more courses out there that it becomes that way.

Looking forward to it, and even though I say these things, I'll be out at Blue Valley to play doubles, I wouldn't let it scare me because its at Blue Valley.

1. Anthon doesn't throw that much shorter than Avery. Sure Avery is one of the bombers out there but 50' doesn't get you much but an easier up shot.
2. Yes, throwing further is an advantage... as it should be. But, and I can't stress this enough about out there, even though it is an advantage it doesn't eliminate the ability of someone who can throw 300-350 to be successful. They may have to be more precise in their approaches, but that is usually the case at any course.

It is the most boring hole on the course. Needs some trees, not in the fairway, but lining the side of the fairway for definition purposes. That hole as it sits has perhaps the most room for an errant drive of any hole in town.

The vast majority of holes at WYCO would beg to differ.  :)

I was thinking Rosey my self...

I am a master now, but let me say that I am totally against this. I hate the trend. It gives a guy that happens to be 40 the chance to win more $$$ than the person with the best score, should he happen to be under 40. If the Japan Open and European Open would offer a sidebet that was open to only players that were UNDER 40 (as well as the other existing sidebets), I'd have less of a problem with it.

Personally, I think you should have to choose your division and live the decision.

So just to clarify Chappy, you, a masters age player, are in favor of the more sidebet style of doing masters or am I just misreading your post.

Just as a point of clarification I think that Chris has been positing that some of the "old guys" are as good as the other open players. His main point, though, is that masters doesn't do anything to create an equitable playing field in the groups of players as some play far better than others. Some play that division to win, some to get better, some to socialize, just like every other division. When I brought up the idea of dumping masters it wasn't out of any disrespect to the masters players. I love getting to play with CD, Pete, Jamie Danger, and every other one of the masters players because all of them show one thing to the players that they play with, that distance doesn't win, accuracy does. Maybe initially it would be a problem for the masters players playing with the partying/disrespectful/whatever else Ams and Pros but it would be naive at best to assume that the influence of those elder-statesmen would have no effect on those other players.
And also to clarify, I'm not saying we should absolutely get rid of masters, I'm just stirring the pot. The only way we grow is to be challenged by new ideas and new thoughts that might initially seem so radical that they could never happen but eventually gain traction and prove to be useful in the grand scheme of things. Sometimes it isn't best to leave sleeping dogs lie.

Now we're stirring the pot.

Here's another question to help:  What's the purpose of KCFDC leagues?

I always felt it was to put people of similar skill in compeitition against each other.  After calculating ratings for over 2000 rounds earlier this year, I will say that age is not the best grouper.

And now for my first witness I'd like to call the expert Chris Timko. Chris, in your professional opinion, is the age group 40 and over accomplishing the goal of grouping players with similar skill levels together? Why or why not? And what would make a better split if indeed that split isn't the most conducive to good competition.

And now out of that mode...
Masters players out there... why do you choose to play masters? Is is purely camaraderie? Is it skillset? I think in order to understand the mindset of this division we're going to have to understand some of the purposes of the players who choose to play it. If it is mainly for camaraderie or something else like that then perhaps it isn't best to tinker, that is a goal outside of golf that our leagues are facilitating and probably shouldn't be tinkered with, but I don't think we'll know that till we hear from some more masters players.

Or we could just get rid of masters... allow those who are eligible to play in grandmasters and let the masters divide themselves b/t Open and Am as they see fit. They do that at some events too.
thats just plain stupid, just keep it as is

Why is it that DG allows players to begin playing in age protected divisions like pro masters and adv masters at age 40 when ball golf, who've we've taken so many queues from in other areas, doesn't allow that until age 50? I'm all for the age protected divisions I just think they could be better split. I'd bet we'd create a need and desire for grandmasters with this kind of move and allow players who weren't there yet to decide b/t Am and Open. Some undoubtedly would move into Open and start vying for cash easily, and others would play Am and start doing very well in those divisions. On top of that, what could be better than the aged veteran whooping some young guy in a round and teaching them what real golf is about. I think a move like this would strengthen the competition in KC considerably.
