General Banter / Chris Arey, KCFDC #195...RIP
« on: July 13, 2008, 02:11:03 PM »
It's with great sadness that I report the death of Chris Arey, KCFDC #195, from a motorcycle accident.

While not nearly as avid a disc golfer as he was some 10 or so years ago, Chris still played occasionally, and when I last saw him about a year ago or so at Water Works, was quite interested in what was happening with the game in KC and how DGW was doing. Chris was an easy going guy who laughed easily and often, and of course, will be missed by all who knew him.

Found and Lost / Bring Lost Discs to Disc Golf World
« on: July 08, 2008, 12:53:05 PM »
We've been doing this for a while, but decided to announce it out here. Please feel free to bring found discs with names and or contact information on them to Disc Golf World at 509 E 18th ST in KC (or give them to John Chapman, Ted Keith, or Rick Rothstein). You can also drop in the 509 mail slot when the store is closed.

We will contact the owner of the disc, who can pick it up here at their leisure. I think it's great that so many people are keeping the community spirit alive by trying to get lost discs back to their owners. However, the problem is often the logistics of meeting up. Having DGW has a central repository should help resolve that problem to some extent. Unclaimed lost discs will become property of the KCFDC to advance its outreach programs.

Water Works / 7/3/08 Water Works League
« on: July 05, 2008, 10:39:20 AM »
It was an absolutely gorgeous evening at Water Works with light breezes, temperature around 80°, NO rain, and a recently mowed course. The only bad news was the large tree that guarded the left placement at #9 fell during Wednesday night's storm. The good news was that if fell on the right placement but the basket was on the left.

With #2, #6, #8, #12, #14, and #15 in their longest positions, it was a moderately tough layout. Playing masters, Mike Thomas shot a 47, 5 better than Arturo Villarreal and Leo Deprato, who won the open with 52s. All told, we had 26 players.

General Banter / Disc Golf Article in the July 2008 Urban Times
« on: July 03, 2008, 01:15:05 PM »
It was a few weeks ago that Rachel Murphy showed up at Rosedale on Wednesday night to research an article she was writing for Urban Times, a free glossy monthly that can be found from the River Market to the Plaza, and perhaps, in suburban locations as well. She did an excellent job. She got most of her information when she walked the whole round with Tavish, Pete C, Mike Thomas, and me. There are three photos taken by Aaron Lindberg without captions including Justin Starks, Chris Timko, and me. I'll quote the lead article and the pull quotes. Pick up an issue when you can. I think you'll be pleased.

Lead sentence: If Gatorade were the official sponsor of high-pressure sports such as soccer, football, and basketball, then Boulevard would be the sponsor of disc golf. At first glance, this motley assembly of people would not be sized up as fierce competitors. Even after a 2-hour walk around the disc golf course at Rosedale Park, fierce is not the adjective that I would choose, but they are competitors. Better descriptions would be environmentally and socially conscious, community involved, and skill competitors.

Pull quote 1: "Disc golf  is the only time that some people get outside. It's a lot more stimulation than the video games that kids spend so much time on these days," says Pete Cashen, an industrial pipe worker and disc golf enthusiast. "Plus it's good exercise."

Pull quote 2: While the name disc golf conjures up unlikely images of jauntily dressed businessmen throwing Frisbees, the truth is not too far off.

Again, this was a very flattering and  factually correct article. The only error was attributing Justin Starks 2nd place advanced finish in the Wide Open as "second place over all." Kudos to Rachel.

Several people will be meeting at Water Works on Saturday morning starting at 8 p.m. to bring the course into readiness for the Wide Open. One of the main tasks is to get rid of as much of the deadwood that is peppering the course. Some chipping might need to be done as well. If you have some time, please lend a hand. If you have time before Saturday, please start removing the dead wood. Either pile it in the lower parking lot, or start making piles that we can pick up on Saturday. The city is supposed to be out there today removing the large down trees.

I'll see what the Club has in terms of shovels, rakes, clippers, etc, but if you have your own tools that you can bring, that would be great.

Lunch and beverages will be provided.

Let me know if you can attend, or just show up! Thanks.

Rosedale / Rosedale League 4-30: Doubles!
« on: April 30, 2008, 11:03:40 AM »

John Chapman has been carefully tracking all local scores this year, and by using the PDGA ratings formula has created local ratings for all who have played in leagues or tournaments. We will be using these numbers to determine pools from which partners for best-shot doubles will be drawn. Two divisions are offered: Open and Am. Open will play for cash, while ams will play for KC Kash. Both divisions will be seeded by local ratings to form two groups, from which teams will be made.

REGISTRATION CLOSES AT 5:45. You may call 816.914.0094 or 816.547.6148 if you are running late, but you must be there by 5:55 to draw partners. As we are not allowing any single (California) teams, we are reserving the right to disallow any late registrants (after 5:45) to play.

Rosedale / 2008 Rosedale League--Everyone is Welcome!
« on: March 10, 2008, 09:49:03 PM »
John Chapman and I are running league at Rosedale this year. It looks like Wednesday is the pick weather day of the week. Come on out and say goodbye to winter.

We are teeing off promptly at 5:30. Please register by 5:15 or give me a call at 816.914.0094 if you want on a  card. Amateurs—be they advanced, intermediate, rec, or novice—are encouraged to play. We intend to be very liberal in creating divisions. Three players are preferred, but we're flexible. KC Kash will be given as prizes, and there will be discs there to redeem any winnings. Cash divisions this week are open and masters (40 or turn 40 in 2008) and/or grandmasters (50 or turn 50 in 2008).

Entry fee: $5.00 (KCFDC members get a $1 discount). Ace Pool is $1 and optional. The current ace pool is around $400.

More will be posted later here, but we're going to try some new formats this year at Rosedale. Stay tuned.

For anyone not "blowing glass" that weekend.

A downloadable entry form will be available soon.

The Missouri State Coordinator's pick to qualify to play in the 2007 United States Disc Golf Championship will go to the person who shoots the best qualifying round at the Back Course of Albert-Oakland Park on July 13 in Columbia, Missouri.

John Chapman (816-547-6148 or will be running this event, and all questions should be directed to him. All Missouri PDGA members are eligible to compete by paying a $25 entry fee. A person may pay and play as many rounds as he/she chooses. In addition, those PDGA members living near the state border, in such places like suburban Kansas City or St. Louis, Pittsburg, KS, Miami, OK, or Quincy, IL, are also eligible to compete and qualify for this USDGC spot. Any subsequent rounds will cost $15 each. Also, the player may quit a round that is not to his/her liking, pay for another, and go for it again. The first $225 that is collected will be used to secure the entry fee. Any other money collected will go to the winner once he has established that he will, in fact, be attending the Championship.

The first time frame for qualifying will be from 8:00AM to about 11:30 AM. (You must start your round by 11:30 AM.) The afternoon session will start around 3:30 (after the Mid-America Open doubles competition is finished using the back course), and you must start your round by 6PM.

Good luck to all competitors.
