General Banter / Re: Cleaning out pole holes.
« on: November 21, 2014, 04:38:41 PM »
I've had some success with banging the basket down into the hole over and over until it pushed the stuff further down far enough to lock it. However, this didn't work when sticks and stones had intentionally been put into the anchor. This is not very subtle, but the baskets are sturdy.

Ideally, we will have enough staff members, so that all who want to play some golf, get to.

Wasn't Cinderblock involved last time with beer? They're legit. We might also try KC Bier Co as they're newer. Big Rip was involved with an event at Thornfield earlier in the year as well.

I'd be happy to help out with registration, merchandise, raffle, or whatever. Do I still get to play at some point?

The date for the main KC Ice Bowl is January 24-25 at Rosedale. We're shooting to raise a cool $10K this year, a mere $800 more than last's year all-time record. Readers of this form will probably know that Jack Lowe has initiated discussion about holding satellite fund-raising events at other courses in towns farther away from KC. Regardless of how this pans out (and I'm hoping that it does), we will still need volunteers at Rosedale, especially on Sunday, January for the traditional Ice Bowl celebration.

If you can help on Sunday, we need assistance for setting things up, player registration and check-in, chili contest registration, merch sales, ancillary events help, raffle/ctp ticket sales, scorecard checking, next round confirmation checking, controlling trash, deploying the final round, and so on and so on.

Give me a call, text, or email if you can help out or you have any questions.

Anyone interested in helping with sponsorship (not just money, but things like a big generator, soft drinks, food, beer, etc) or hitting up friends, family, and co-workers to support the cause by giving pledges, here are links to:

It's officially not happening this year. Hoping to bring it back next year with a slightly revamped format. Thanks for the interest.

Bag Tags / Re: Bag Tag Rules
« on: July 10, 2014, 04:55:52 PM »
You have to be an active member of the KCFDC to buy a bag tag. Memberships can be purchased at Disc Golf World and Dynamic Discs. You can also sign up online: http://kcfdc.org/membership/join/

It's essentially a rating system. Tag #1 means you're really good. Tag #328 (my tag) means you just bought one a couple weeks ago, haven't played anyone for it, or I suck. All three are true. Does anyone have a tag number higher than mine? I'll play them for it. If I can't be first, I may as well be last.

You can buy them for $5 from Disc Golf World in KC. They have a bottle opener on them, so they're versatile.

Any time you play a round with someone else with a bag tag you're supposed to "wager" them. Low score on the round takes the lowest bag tag, highest the highest bag tag, and everyone else in between.  The rules are likely on page 1.

H2 Open will not be held in July.  It might be rescheduled for later in the year. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

I'm all for a Master's division.   ;D  They stand a far better chance of getting my Am Grandmaster jokes.   :P

Attention Kansas City area disc golfers: Mark your calendars for the 10th Annual Kansas City Disc Golf Day on Saturday, May 31 at Swope Park from 10am to 3pm. Disc Golf Day is about celebrating disc golf in Kansas City with new and old friends by enjoying food and drink and playing golf and other games. Once again, DGD will be a fundraiser for the Kansas City Wide Open. Disc Golf Day is also a wonderful opportunity to introduce new people to the joys of disc golf.

For $20, players receive a commemorative disc and tee shirt, lunch, and a chance to win an Innova Sport Model DISCatcher or other prizes. The Kansas City Flying Disc Club will be providing the barbecue, some sides, and beverages. Everyone is invited to bring other sides, chips, and desserts to share.

The main prizes—the  Sport Model and an Innova Mini Target—will be given away in a drawing at the end of the day. To be eligible for prizes, a player must be a Disc Golf Day participant and play a round of disc golf at Swope that day. In addition to golfing and eating and celebrating, there will be Mini Golf, KC Hole 'Em, and a disc dog demo for further entertainment.

The Schedule
All Day: Pick up your individual scorecard, form your group, and play a round. Turn in your scorecard by 2:55 pm for a chance to win an Innova Traveler and other prizes.
Noon–2pm: BBQ Lunch. Feel free to bring sides, chips, desserts, etc. Beverages provided by the KCFDC.
1pm-3pm: KC Hold ‘Em, Mini Golf
2:15 pm: Frisbee Dog Demo with Joe Hesting and Tony Burnett
3pm: Drawing for Prizes.

Here's a link to download a entry form: http://kcfdc.org/docs/dgd14.pdf. You can pre-register at either Dynamic Discs or Disc Golf World…or just show up the day of the event.

Fifty-one teams officially renewed Spring at Swope Park on Saturday when light breezes and a sunny temperature nudging 80° made it a beautiful day for tossing frisbees at Kansas City's oldest course. None threw better than the winning Open Division team of Jose Ossa and Arturo Villarreal whose opening round of 37 (all deuces and a 3 on #13) powered them to a 4-throw win over Thomas Davis and Ken "Tank" Franks, who shot 81. Veterans Mike Thomas and Danny Knox, utiilizing over 50 years of playing experience shot 87 for a 6-throw win in the 100-Year Division over another seasoned veteran group of Jay Rivard and David Zentz.

The Am 1 field of 12 was the tournament's largest where Matt Dixon and Anthony Martella, powered in part by Matt's second-round ace, were six better that Scott Oswalt and Ian Ray. In the Am 2 Division, Brian Egan and Alex Wegman prevailed in the second round to take the two-throw over the fatther-son team of Mike and Connor Allison.

Everyone was stoked that there were a total of 10 mixed teams of men and woman on Saturday. In the Mixed 1, Slim Belcher and April Jenkins overcame a second-round, late-arrival penalty to prevail for the win over Brian Swezy and Chris Bonhanon in a playoff.  Alexandre Viveros partnerd with Rodney Beagle to win the Mixed 2 Division by one throw over Sarah and Joe Hammontree. And last, but for from least, was the Parent-Child Division, where Ben and Steve Dresser successfully defended their title, besting the teams of Carly and Cecil Cameron and Dylan and Jerry Patterson.

There were a total of three aces that split the ace pool of $225. Josh Lawson first throw of the day found the bottom of hole #8's basket. Billy Nelson got the same hole about 45 minutes later. Matt Dixon's ace came on #5 from the short pad, the course's shortest hole, measuring under 150 feet.

A big thanks to the Kansas City Flying Disc Club's Swope Disc Golf Course Coordinator Patrick Smith for ensuring that the baskets were moved, and to Gary Birge, who works with Patrick, and was a great assistant all day long. Gary also took these photos: https://plus.google.com/photos/115815771383701422575/albums/6009345734365606449?gpinv=AMIXal_AFiTX312qJdeV2z29kl-3WmoQeBlC1YUU_xIUK42Cwgi3JDvWWB9a7spfLQ-rmdn8AMB_JrN61dBCFiBoYlG2ow5raJXbOI22f0_VT5w_FMeXqSM&cfem=1&authkey=CK-HoY-HxtPHuAE

Thanks to all the players for their particiation, sportmanship, and good cheer. Because there were at least three or four teams of either brothers or father-sons, we might add a family division next year.

Tournaments / Re: 2014 Swope Spring Renewal Pairs Championships
« on: April 12, 2014, 02:41:22 PM »
I was fully aware of the conflict with the GBO, but remain optimistic that we can draw a sizable field anyway. Many of the players who have played in the previous SSR Pairs Championships do not play PDGA events regularly. I agree that it's a shame when players have to choose between two desirable events, but there are only some many weekends available.

Below are the results from the previous five SSRs.
