Scheduling information will be posted online as well as emailed directly to all pre-registrants quite soon, but first wanted to address the less than robust B-Tier registration.

So yes, I'm kind of surprised that the B-Tier Wide Open for intermediate, recreational, and novice players has not, so far, drawn more players. We hope this will change in the next 48 hours. The shirt order has to be placed by noon on Friday, which means if you think you want to play, let me know your  division and shirt size BEFORE NOON ON FRIDAY!
 
Here are some reasons why lesser-rated players should be part of this historical event:
The cost is only $55 (add $10 more if not PDGA) and here's what you get:

Looking for high-res photos of 2010 open division champion Eric McCabe and women's open champ Jennifer Allen from the event. Awards photos are fine as are any they show faces.

Also, if anyone has historical Wide Open photos from 1983 to 1993, I'm very interested. We'd scan them and get them back to you.

Here's the breakdown of entrants so far. It's picking up. If you are intending to play, it would be great if you registered sooner than later as it helps in our planning. As to the age-based pro divisions, there will be a minimum of $1800 added, which would mean a $3100 purse for the 13 men who have signed up so far.

The Parks Department did all the work. Moving forward, it would good to have some locals interested in partnering with Parks Dept on maintenance and improvement issues. Dannie Stamper is the Parks and Rec Director. He's a nice guy and very good to work with.

Hell yes! Wish I would've known there was a course going in, I definitely would've volunteered some time.

The grand opening of this short and fun nine-hole track, designed by Jack Lowe, will be Saturday, April 28 at 11 am. There will be hot dogs and some giveaways. The City is planning an additional nine holes down the road.

It was kind of nippy in the morning as the first competitors found their way to Swope. But the sun was shining brightly and the course, sporting a fresh mow, looked fantastic. All told, there were 48 teams of avid, high-spirited disc golfers, who enjoyed the 36 holes of disc golf and a taste of the Triple X Games. I want to thank everyone who played and helped.

Hopefully, the baskets will be moved to Corporate Challenge positions, which will lengthen the current layout some. We'll likely use long tees the first round and short tees for the final round.

Swope Spring Renewal Pairs Championships

Saturday, April 21 • Swope Park Disc Golf Course • 2 Rounds of 18 Holes

This is not a PDGA-sanctioned event.

 ••• The tournament can accommodate 54 teams. Please pre-register to guarantee your team’s spot. •••

Divisions and Entry Fees:
Open: $44 per team (cash payback)
100-Year—the combined ages of the partners must be at least 100: $34 per team (cash)
Amateur 1 (advanced): $34 per team (prize payback) • Amateur 2 (intermediate): $24 per team (prizes)
Amateur Women: $24 per team (prizes) • Mixed—one male and one female: $24 (prizes)
Parent-Child (child 14 and under): $24 (prizes) • Junior—must be 18 or under: $30 (prizes)

Minimum of two teams required to open a division. Entry fee includes a $4 per team fee to the KCFDC.
Ace Fund (optional): $4 per team. If no ace, money will got to the top 3 teams in a C-T-P throw-off.

Schedule
On Site Registration: 8:15 am - 9:15 am
Players’ meeting: ~9:50. Tee off to follow.
*2nd Round Tee: To Be Announced (probably 2ish)

*Between rounds, several of the Triple X Games, which will be held in conjunction with the Kansas City Wide Open, will be tried and tested. These games include Accuracy, Miniature Golf, KC Hold'em, Speed-Putting, and Tic-Tac-Thro. The Triple X Games will be open to all. Try them...you might like them! Also being tried and tested will be overnight camping at Camp Lake of the Woods, which is located in Swope a couple of miles from the course and will be used for the Wide Open as well. Camping is free and there will be fun and games there as well. During the tournament and camping, we’ll be signing up Wide Open volunteers. Please stop by.

It's the 21st, it's doubles, entry fees will be low with few frills. Divisions will be open, 100-year, mixed, women, am 1, am 2, parent child (child 14 and under), and high school. During the break between rounds, we'll be introducing and playing some of the Triple X games that will be a part of the Wide Open. There will also be camping at Swope that night, which will also be happening at the Wide Open.

If anyone is interested in cooking lunch between rounds, please let me know.

More information tomorrow.

Wide Open Update: We Want Players and Helpers

Tee off for KC Wide Open XXX is less than two months away. We're planning on hosting around 400 players, and are going to need some help to make this historic event as good as it possibly can be. We need players and we need helpers.

If you are playing, you can register in several ways:

There are many ways you can help out during the event. We need volunteers to form Grounds Crews at each of the five courses we're using: Swope, Rosedale, Blue Valley, Water Works, and Young. Grounds crew members will make sure there is drinking water on the course, the tee pads are kept clean, OB markers are intact, banners and tee signs are in place and taken down, spotting during the rounds, and other related tasks.

While it would be great to find people who are available for all five rounds, we understand that for many people this will not be possible. So, if you can help out for only a round or two, that would be great. Help is needed for the morning rounds from 7:30 to about noon, and then from noon to about 4:30 in the afternoon. These time frames may change slightly after the schedule is set.

Some other tasks (but not all of them!) include helping out with the Triple X Games, plugging scores into a computer, carrying a leader board and scoring the final nine, spotting, post-event course clean-up, helping with player check-in on Thursday and Friday, course preparation (including marking OBs for Swope Gold), painting putting circles for each green, helping with the Youth Clinic and the NT Clinic on Thursday, soliciting sponsors, selling ads for the KC Wide Open Commemorative Program, and on and on.

Volunteering to be a member of a staff that pulls off a great disc golf  tournament is rewarding in and of itself and lots of fun. However, volunteers will receive tournament scwhag. People who can volunteer for all five rounds as a Grounds Crew member will get more benefits, including free entry to the Saturday Night Soiree that will be a party you do not want to miss.
