Tournaments / Big "O" Is On: Saturday, August 11, 8:30 a.m.
« on: August 08, 2007, 11:12:11 AM »
Due to time flashing by at an unusually high-rate of speed, we're belatedly announcing that the annual BIG O tournament is happening this Saturday at Prairie Center in less than 72 hours.

Hopefully, there are enough dedicated disc golfers who'll find the time to play another fun frisbee tournament here in Kansas City...even with very short notice.

Bee there!

Rick

Thanks to everyone...and I truly mean every one of the 66 entrants for making the 4th H2Open a very fun event to play in and to run. Many people helped out here and there with moving baskets and scoring and cleaning up, there was absolutely no negativity or whining (didn't hear any, anyway), and of course, we got to hang out at one of the most beautiful disc golf courses on the planet.

We played a longer course the first round before enjoying a very short course the final round. Dave Hemmeline aced #3 in the short placement during the second round. CD Steiner defended his open division championship (he's won 3 of them now). The full results are below.

Unless we run the 5th H2Open as a doubles tournament this fall, the 5th or 6th will be held July 19, 2008. It will again be semi-invitational with this year's players having first shot at the 72 spots. If you want to play, let me know.

A few special thanks are in order. First to Kelly Warren, Paul Eklund, and Ben "Hippy T" Taylor for the barbecue and Becky Stebbins for the salad. Thanks also to Duffy Carduff of Eagle Products for the cool design on the commemorative shirts and the great price. (There are a few of these left in XL or XXL.).

Thanks again for a great time.

Rick Rothstein

The Missouri State Coordinator's pick to qualify to play in the 2007 United States Disc Golf Championship will go to the person who shoots the best qualifying round at the Back Course of Albert-Oakland Park on July 13 in Columbia, Missouri.

John Chapman (816-547-6148 or john@discgolfworld.com) will be running this event, and all questions should be directed to him. All Missouri PDGA members are eligible to compete by paying a $25 entry fee. A person may pay and play as many rounds as he/she chooses. In addition, those PDGA members living near the state border, in such places like suburban Kansas City or St. Louis, Pittsburg, KS, Miami, OK, or Quincy, IL, are also eligible to compete and qualify for this USDGC spot. Any subsequent rounds will cost $15 each. Also, the player may quit a round that is not to his/her liking, pay for another, and go for it again. The first $225 that is collected will be used to secure the entry fee. Any other money collected will go to the winner once he has established that he will, in fact, be attending the Championship.

The first time frame for qualifying will be from 8:00AM to about 11:30 AM. (You must start your round by 11:30 AM.) The afternoon session will start around 3:30 (after the Mid-America Open doubles competition is finished using the back course), and you must start your round by 6PM.

Good luck to all competitors.

Rick Rothstein
PDGA State Coordinator for Missouri

« on: May 21, 2007, 12:26:23 PM »
Hey Everyone,

Thanks to everyone who came out to play beautiful Swope Park on a perfect Sunday yesteray. All told, there were 49 players who sampled an assortment of holes through the use of both sets of baskets and teepads. The first round was on a much longer (probably greater than 1,000 feet) course. The courses featured mandatories on holes #1 and #10, and there was no OB except for going into the street (and not getting across the street on #13 in the first round). We mixed divisions for the first round before playing within divisions on the second round. Thanks to Jim Neal for making sure the course got mowed, and moving some baskets for us to get ready. Thanks to Becky Stebbins, Kevin Montgomery, and Bill Neenan for the assistance in scoring. Thanks to Dan Cashen for constructing the deck and pro shop, which is the best place to run a tournament from...especially if you're playing the event you're running. If you have never enjoyed the "19th hole" on that deck, you really should. All and alli, it was a fine day of golf and camaraderie. The scores are below.

The next Disc Golf World event might be at the disc golf course at Wakarusa. We'll be vending the tournament discs there this year, and hope to get something going. Stay tuned.

Rick

swope spring renewal back on for Sunday, May the 20th....

heard from Rick Rothstein, at KC Disc Golf day

It's true. The Swope Spring Renewal has been rescheduled for Sunday, May 20. Here's a link to an entry form (that still has the orginal date):

http://www.kcfdc.org/docs/07swoperenew.pdf

If you choose to pre-register using a bank card, we're waiving the fee, and you get a mini.

The long-range weather forecast looks great, so if you not traveling to play in the various PDGA events in the region, please come out to beautiful Swope Park for some low-key, friendly competition.

Tournaments / Re: 2007 Redbud Open
« on: April 15, 2007, 01:44:21 PM »
The Redbud Open Was A Good One

The weather forecasts all looked dismal, even the ones issued eight hours before the 2007 Redbud Open was to tee off. Instead, when 10:30 rolled around on Saturday morning, the rain had stopped three hours earlier, the snow and sleet never materialized, and lo and behold, the skies cleared allowing some sun to warm things up. Thus, during the first round, the record number of 59 players had to shed some layers as the temps pushed into the 40s by mid-round. Even the wind cooperated, staying in the 8-10 MPH range.

Kevin Babbit, the defending open champion, had the best score during the first round, a 56, on this very challenging layout where every hole is called a par 3, but in reality there are four holes—#1, #3, #14, and #15—that are actually par 4s. He matched that score on the second round to edge Arturo Villarreal by four throws. Arturo fashioned a pair of 58s. The only other under-60 scores were posted by Mark Martin (57), Pete Cashen, Bryan Guthrie, and Michael Schoenhopper (59), and Brad Fortman (58). Brad, from St Louis, and playing the course for the first time in the morning, improved by 12 throws to catapult from a 5th place tie to nab the am masters championship.

All and all in was a great day, although the traditional camping party on Friday night was killed because of the cold rain that fell all day. Ted’s barbecue was tasty and both kegs of Boulevard did not survive until the end of the round.

Because of the softness in the real estate market, the developers who were set to buy the property on which Ted’s Dread sits never closed the deal. Until the land sells, it’s likely that the baskets will stay put, and there might well be the Third Annual Last Redbud Open.

A big thank you goes out to Ted Kubicki for inviting on to us property and allowing me to direct this event. Ted, aided mightily by Tom Sprinkle, had the course in good shape. Thanks to Sean Gibson, Kevin Montgomery, and Kevin Corbett for their help in scoring.

General Banter / Re: Who's Playing the Redbud

If the weather is horrible will the redbud be rescheduled?????????????

The tourney is on. Ted is planning to put of some tarps for sign-in and eating. Also he gathering wood for a big bonfire for those brave enough to camp.

Think warm. Think dry. Dress in layers and keep your feet dry!

Tournaments / Re: 2007 Redbud Open
« on: April 09, 2007, 01:16:53 PM »
I appreciate everyone who has pre-registered and paid for the Redbud Open. The full list of the 49 players—pre-registrants and expect-to-play people is listed below.

If you are planning on playing and haven't gotten on the list yet, please give me a call at 816.471.3472 or email at rick@discgolfworld.com. It appears unlikely that we will have a sold-out tournament before Saturday. Therefore, late registration and check in opens at 8:15 a.m. Registration closes at 9:30. We want to tee off at 10 a.m. Second round will begin after lunch.

Think warm,

Rick

Tournaments / Re: Ice Bowl Summary Including Results (long post!)

Supported the Event with Package Purchase, but not in attendance
204   Nick   Arbeitman
207   Ted   Keith

For the record. I carried on conversations with both of these guys on Sunday. Nick was watching the CTP for a bit and Ted bought his package and hung out for a bit before heading to a prior engagement. So, not total wimps.....   ;D

Ah, I missed seeing Nick. Actually, Ted is listed twice (173) because he bought two packages...presumably the second was for someone!   R
