Tournaments / Benefit Disc Golf Day - Sat, March 7th - Lawrence
« on: February 26, 2009, 01:14:48 pm »
With a heavy heart I want to let you all know some sad news about one of our local DG'ing brothers:

Brian Iron Whiteman, of Lawrence, KS, lost his wife of nearly 10 years, Jennifer Iron Whiteman, to an unexpected illness on Feb 11th.  Brian will be raising their 6 kids and we wish him the best.

On Saturday, March 7th there will be a BENEFIT DISC GOLF DAY for Brian Iron Whiteman and his family at Centennial Disc Golf Course/Park in Lawrence.
Random Doubles will Tee Off at 11AM.

The format is casual so that anyone can contribute.  DG'ers can play singles on their own card if they wish, OR, we will have a Random Doubles format (with discs as prizes) teeing off at 11am.  I'll be there by 9am to accept contributions and organize the Random Doubles.

A $10 contribution is requested...but any amount contributed will allow anyone to participate.  Those who would wish to donate discs for prizes will be much appreciated.

For those who don't know Brian, he is a super nice guy with a heart of gold.  He is an avid DG'er and tournament pool player.

Respectfully submitted,
Steve doc Norby

PS  I'm reposting this news here and fully realize there are 2 league events this day.  My reasoning for choosing this date is to allow the KDGA'ers who know Brian to be able to participate as they may already be in town for the Kan~U~WyCo Tournament.

Our Kan~U~WyCo tournament is on Sunday, March 8th...the day we Spring forward into Daylight Saving Time at 2am.  So, Spring forward or you'll be late for tee off!

Then on Monday, March 9th league's begin...though start times will be earlier than the usual 6pm due to the sunset being at ~7:17pm with twilight at ~7:45pm.  Am guessing those running leagues will announce their intended start times as we near Daylight Saving Time.

By the end of March sunset's will be at ~7:40pm with twilight at ~8:07.

#134 - come get some!  HA!

I played a lot of Frisbee in the 70's - then around '80 a high school friend and I DISCovered a city-built playground area with a large above-the-ground horizontal culvert that was ~approx 5' in diameter and around 30-35' long.  We played a lot of catch through that...which I'll now officially attribute to my lack of a decent putt but reliable upshot - thank you very much.  :P

Then in college some of my frat bro's and I created a VERY cool 18 hole object course on West Campus at KU.  I was hooked.  We played more than every day for nearly 2 years.  During this time (around '83) we hit Swope for one round of DISC GOLF...officially.  Throwing a lid into a Mach I just didn't jive with us.

FF to '97...have been hooked EVER since.  Though the last 2-3 years my play~frequency dropped from  4-8 rounds/week to maybe 1/wk.

Ed Headrick is da Man.  Long live DG!

And many, many thanks to Kevin Montgomery, Tom Butler, Rick Rothstein & Lance Plummer (Phoenix, AZ), Brian Kelly (Denver, CO) & AJ Boyle (Austin, TX).
