Wrapping some colored duct tape around the poles (or perhaps the top-half) in a striped pattern seems like a durable alternative, fwiw.  How about School Bus Yellow or Racing Orange?

As for extreme shots, one I recall hearing about at Rosedale was an ace on #18 long by LaRon Harris. That's the original long, not the one down around the corner to the right we use as a practice basket. Playdg.com calls it 523'. 

I remember that as being the slightly shorter setting...but 448' with a Cyclone II on an anny is  :o !!
