Shawnee Mission / Day in the Park this Sat. June 5th
« on: June 02, 2010, 01:41:28 PM »

I invite anyone out to Shawnee Mission disc golf course this Saturday June 5th from 10-4 for Day in the Park.

This will be a great way for new players to come out and try the sport. Free Disc usage for disc golf will be available to check-out for the day

I'll be on site to give basic instruction and guidelines for playing disc golf. If you can come out and pitch in, all help is welcome.

Hope to see you there,

Shawnee Mission / big ol tree fell on 2
« on: April 05, 2010, 03:21:55 PM »
I have made the parks department aware of the huge tree that fell on hole 2 covering the main fairway.
We'll get it cleaned up. Lucky the basket was in long spot or it may have been mangled.

Until then, this is forcing shots into a narrower gap on the left, so the hole is still playable and makes it kind of interesting IMHO.

Shawnee Mission / New Pin Locations
« on: November 01, 2009, 06:05:33 PM »
Now that daylight savings has kicked off the Pins have been moved to new longer placements on holes 1,2 and 18. Hole 3, sorry not 4, has been moved to the short placement. 4 long is waiting to be set.

We are working with the parks department to get other locations set as well.

Shawnee Mission / Tee Pads coming
« on: February 05, 2009, 10:12:02 AM »
KCFDC just met with the JoCo Parks & Rec at SMP this morning. Several new items are in the planning stages for the park. Tee Pads are being planned for installation in the Spring. The Measurements will be 5' x 16' concrete. Tee signs will be installed on each hole as well.  We are very pleased the parks dept has made such generous contributions to our sport. They will be providing the bulk of the labor and materials for the project. We also expect an information Kiosk to be installed at hole 1 around this time.

Several other items such as new pin placements and waste baskets are also in the works, we will see as few as 4 new B pin placements this year with a potential for 18 new placements, 1 for each hole.

A few tweaks to the course layout will be made in final preparation for tee pad install. Most affected will be holes 5 and 6, which will be extended and altered through the wooded area. 8, 9, 11, and 14 will also see some changes too tee pad location to better accomodate multiple pin placements. In effect, the current pins will be the defacto short placements as we move Tee in closer on a few holes, and longer B settings are placed.

I will keep the course map updated on our site as changes are made, however I'd expect the parks to alter their maps less frequently until the final changes are set in concrete so to speak.

General Banter / Workday Equipment - Call to Arms
« on: November 13, 2008, 10:45:14 AM »
Several courses are planning workdays, and we have a scattered array of equipment around town, some accounted for, some not.

If you have any saws, cutters, ect.. or know of anyone who does have club equipment please speak up and let us know here.

All equipment needs to be returned to club storage at Disc Golf World

as soon as possible so we can assess if any more repairs that need to be made and we can continue using the equipment on several courses that are in serious need of care before The Worlds.  This is typically the best time of year to get work done since the brush and bugs are down and the weather is cool.

Here is what we know of so far:

Jack has sent the Polesaw to the shop to repair the extension tube. He also has a stihl brush trimmer and the mongo push weed whacker.

Tom Butler has the smaller Brush Trimmer and is going to get the fuel line repaired next week.

I'm not sure where the Chainsaw is but heard it was last seen at Rosedale workday...?

I'd like to schedule the first of several workdays at SMP but want to make sure we have the tools needed to get the job done, as I assume other CCs are considering as well.

Thanks for helping make our courses beautiful!

Shawnee Mission / Course Improvements
« on: May 05, 2008, 04:51:59 PM »
Among the many ongoing improvements at Shawnee Mission you will now find that a new location for hole 6 will soon been placed.

Old Hole 4 has been completely removed to alleviate walking across the road 2 times to play one hole. This also tightens up the walk between holes, all around improvement, everybody wins.

The new hole 4 is the previous hole 5. In other words after hole 3 proceed directly north across the road bypassing old 4.

The new hole 6 Tee is located just to the north side of the path after hole 5 basket, and is shooting towards the basket by the administration building.  You will notice a path not far behind hole 6, this path is O.B.

The hole 7 tee is now located just north of 6 pin towards the parking lot.

Everything else stays the same. We are going to be putting in tee box markers and working up signs here in the next few weeks.

I will update the map online shortly.

Shawnee Mission / Course installation update
« on: September 25, 2007, 01:32:31 PM »
This past week we received contract approval to operate as a club at Shawnee Mission Park, we are pleased. I made an appearance at the monthly board meeting to thank them for their generous donation of the land and offer an invitation to come out and play once the course is installed.

So the question is, when is the course going to be installed?

Believe me, no one wants this course in place sooner than I do. I have been pressing  the park staff to schedule a date to set the basket foundations. A final walkthrough with the installation staff is happening next week. DGA Mach IIIs are being stored. We will then establish a date to auger the holes and pour the concrete for the pins. I will keep everyone posted here.  I REALLY hope this is done before the end of October, but we are at the will of the park dept.

As soon as we have got the exact locations set I will post a map in the KC Disc Golf Course Directory.

General Banter / Shawnee Mission Park info
« on: July 13, 2007, 11:42:10 AM »
This is a pointer thread regarding an important topic in the Shawnee Mission Park forum. Didn't want non scrollers to miss it.

Please add any feedback to that forum.

Shawnee Mission Park Disc Golf Course is well on its way to becoming a reality. We have received final board approval to begin installation effective immediately. This is a very exciting time for everyone who has had the vision of playing disc golf at SMP, as it was the location of the inaugural Kansas City Wide Open 25 years ago.

The course will be implemented in a phased approach. The first phase is installation of the baskets, which is where we are at right now. The  JoCo parks department has agreed upon purchase of Mach III baskets, which we are very pleased with. The parks dept. will help auger the holes where we need them. The KCFDC has agreed to be the primary resource in getting the concrete poured for basket bases. We will need help from club members getting this accomplished. At that point in time we will have a concrete date for setting the baskets and announce the opening of the course.

The second phase will not be approached until at the earliest next year, when tee pad and bench installation will proceed. At this point we need to battle test the design and flow of the course.

So there are still a few outstanding issues before we get to that point. First is course preparation which is currently underway. I will be out at the park on weekend mornings trimming and shaping the fairways until the course is in shape. If you would like to help me out I’ve got a few of the clubs power tools to get things done. If you’re interested in helping leave me your contact information though a message here or call me at 816.678.4468. Under NO circumstances should anyone do any "maintenance" on their own, as I have explicit instructions from the park manager on what is able to be done.

Secondly there will be an Ad Hoc event at the park on Sunday July 22nd at 10am. I want to give everyone a chance to play the course before we set the pins so that any feedback can be considered. We have already had a number of experienced players go through the course and given recommendations which have helped shape the course already, so I think we will have a lot of fun getting a glimpse of what is to come.

The plan is to get people to bring out individual baskets and set up a temp course, so if you can bring a basket (especially metal ones) come out between 9 and 9:30am and we will set up your basket on the course. We will run as many holes as we have baskets for and then move the baskets to the remainder of holes complete the round. This is not a league, it does not cost anything, just a chance to show your support for the new course.

See you at the park!

Club Archives / Google Maps and Course Directory
« on: April 05, 2007, 03:04:24 PM »,-94.684982&spn=0.316297,0.477219&t=h&msid=108060702362863002836.00000111c2ec0e7dea08b&msa=0

Google Maps just released a cool feature that may be very useful to folk attending the KCWO and as a general KCFDC Course Directory.

I have made a KC Golf Course Directory and labeled the holes for Rosedale. The other courses and hole distances can be filled in later if we want to use this.

See if you can easily find directions from the host hotel to Rosedale.

Club Archives / KCWO7 ARTWORK needed!!
« on: March 20, 2007, 04:46:06 PM »
ARTISTS! Help the cause!

We need to get a kick butt design for WO.

Basic theme should incorporate:

25th Kansas City Wide Open- June 22-24 2007

with an emphasis on the 25th year of the event.

We are offering at least $100 for a killer design we use, the only gotcha is that we will only be using one or two so there is no gaurantee yours will be picked. the design of the disc flyig over bartle hall kind of set the satandard of what we think is good work.

We need these done ASAP so we can get on with promoting the event. So if you or any of your friends have the skills please help us out. We need these by early April!

Contact me at 816-678-4468 or Dan Cashen to submit materials, or give us a shout here.

Format can be digital or scanable at 300dpi - disc sized.
