Tom and I spent the day out at SMP spraying herbicide on the poison ivy about the course and got a good handle on eradication. We will check back in several weeks and see how its dying off and hit it again.

I highly doubt we got all of it and it will take persistence to mostly eradicate it.

Holes 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, 18 are fairly heavy and where we did the most work. Big thanks to Tom who had obviously done this before. Having people like step up and help goes a long ways in making this course better faster.

I have asked the parks dept for herbicide so that the club  volunteers can clear out the ivy for the public use of the park.

I will be very grateful for any help getting this done, thanks for offering help, as I am very allergic to the stuff. Anyone else out their not terribly allergic able to come and help??

Holes its really bad on are 8, 12, 13, 14, 18, so keep aware.

We have the Tee markers ready to place this weekend.

the problem is a lot of people could try to take the lefty route out into #6's fairway.

Its a tribute to Swope.

Dick has volunteered to clear out the tunnel fairway that will be another placement on 6, that will eliminate any crossed discs, but I think there is plenty O room regardless. Placement of 7 tee is not set in concrete yet, so to speak, so try variations on a theme.

The baskets have been moved to their new homes and I believe they will settle here for quite some time.

I will be placing tee markers in the next week or two.


My biggest concern is the fact that we are not getting adequate support for mowing, but I will address that in a separate thread. This thread should  be about what the club has control of and what we can do to improve the course.

There is no official time line, but we are continuing to upgrade from our basic basket installation all the time.  We now have a couple of permanent trashcans in strategic spots.  We will be installing Tee Markers (Not pads) in the next few weeks. Course map and info signage is also in the works and should be ready soon. I'll post most of these updates in the course improvements thread.

Also, Notice hole 4 has been removed and been replaced by a new hole 6. Map at top of this thread

Among the many ongoing improvements at Shawnee Mission you will now find that a new location for hole 6 will soon been placed.

Old Hole 4 has been completely removed to alleviate walking across the road 2 times to play one hole. This also tightens up the walk between holes, all around improvement, everybody wins.

The new hole 4 is the previous hole 5. In other words after hole 3 proceed directly north across the road bypassing old 4.

The new hole 6 Tee is located just to the north side of the path after hole 5 basket, and is shooting towards the basket by the administration building.  You will notice a path not far behind hole 6, this path is O.B. 

The hole 7 tee is now located just north of 6 pin towards the parking lot.

Everything else stays the same. We are going to be putting in tee box markers and working up signs here in the next few weeks.

I will update the map online shortly.

Yes, my priorities lie with continuing to develop the course. tee pads, signage, fairways to clear, trash bins, ongoing park staff items, ect...

However we do have the opportunity to run a league, so  if someone wants to commit for the season speak up.  I think Tuesday is the earmarked day thats been discussed for SMP,  In order not to step on any other KS leagues (Prairie, Rosie, Wyco).

Id like to see grass.  Sounds kind of broad I know, but it is what it is.I mean its no mystery that the course is in a shambles compared to what it was a few years ago.

Playing on it during rain and sloppy conditions is just a bad idea if we want it to look nice. without the work of Theiss and Buckles crew dumping a few tons of mulch the day before the Ice Bowl it would have been an even greater destruction. Those guys did the course a huge favor, and it was great to see some proactive movement in the club. the big change needs to come from the EC and CCs though. A plan needs to be put into place and some budget spent to get this course back into shape, if we want Rosedale to present well.

some of the steps necessary are obvious, Several pole holes need to be moved from their short placements for an indefinete period, until grass takes hold. that means using longer locations or making new short hole placements (which is another issue). If we coul dget temporary fly 18 pads to replace teeing areas for hole 1, 4,5, 6, 10, 14, 15. rope off the areas - lots of yellow tape,  and try to get some grass seed to take hold over the next year and a half.

Its  a huge task and would require the concerted effort.  I am making an effort not to play there if it is wet or a crowded time. We are getting enough new courses to divert some traffic which should help but...

Maybe its inevitable that Rosie will continue to turn into a bigger mud pit.

I have put in a request with the park manager to get at least 4 industrial  trash cans at strategic points on the course until we get the benchs in. Until then please do your part to pick up after yourself, and if your a star citizen like the folks in this thread, please help the community and clean up after the inconsiderate!
