General Banter / Need Portable Baskets for FRI July 29th
« on: July 06, 2011, 09:10:14 AM »
I am setting up a temp course on the campus of Shawnee Mission West for my 30th (yes, 30th) High School reunion weekend.

I could tote a bunch of SkillShot (canvas) targets easy enough if anyone would like to loan theirs, but would like at least one GOOD portable target, but may not have room for more than one in my car.

Anybody like to make a trip out there to help me lay it out  ???

General Banter / 2010 Kidney Walk
« on: September 07, 2010, 09:42:35 PM »
My wife Vivian has advanced Stage 4 Kidney Disease, mostly brought about by the steroids she needed to fight Lupus as a pre-teen. Viv is only 42 years old. If you know anything about it, this is serious stuff. If you don't you should click on If you know anyone using sports-enhancing steroids urge them to STOP!

Please sponsor me or join Viv's Volunteers for the 2010 Kidney Walk on October 9th on the UMKC Campus at 10:00 AM. Our 15-yr old son Ulysses has a Cross Country meet the same day (time TBD) a so we may not make it to the walk ourselves.

I would like to plan a fundraiser tourney sometime in the future, to coincide with the Kidney Walk. Maybe even the Club Championship? Comments are welcome.

Thanks for your support in advance!

General Banter / FREE: Freshwater Cichlid Fish
« on: August 31, 2010, 09:30:20 AM »
A co-worker of mine is moving to the east coast and has three freshwater Cichlids that need a home:

The jewel cichlid is really quite beautiful, and I'm not sure just what the convicts did to earn their name - although cichlids are somewhat aggressive and they already ate the smaller of the jewel cichlids.

Aquarium is not included. PM me if interested.

p.s. They're waaay too small to eat, but could be used as bait  :o

Tournaments / Weekly Events
« on: July 23, 2010, 04:59:58 PM »
As our current calendar program on this forum does not allow us to enter "recurring" events, I have created a new topic. I'm trying to create a list that will stay clean, and have thus locked this topic. Please PM me if I goofed or otherwise missed your local event. ~CD~

What we casually refer to as "League Night" is actually a one-round Mini Tournament. Several divisions are generally honored with a minimum of three players per division, at the TDs discretion. Sign-ups close 10-15 minutes early.

Entry fees vary upon division and location/format, but generally $5 to $7 will get you in, less $1 off for KCFDC members, plus $1 Ace Fund. The KCFDC maintains a separate Ace Fund at most courses, and pays 1/2 of the pot each time an Ace is hit, thus seeding the pot. It is not unheard of for an Ace to be hit week after week at the same course, or for the pot to build for weeks on end.

During CDT (Central Daylight Time) weekday events will normally tee at 6:00pm, but may be up to an hour earlier as we enter CDT and come closer to CST (Central Standard Time).
  • Those items listed in color normally offer a Glow Night^ during CST.
  • Items with a ^ do NOT offer a KCFDC Ace Fund

Weekday Minis $7 Open, $5 All Others
  • Cliff Drive (Central)
  • Prairie Center (South)

  • Old Pike CC^ (May be Doubles) (North)
  • Shawnee Mission (West)
  • Swope (East)

  • Rosedale (Central)
  • Blue Springs--Young (East)

  • Water Works (North)

  • Legacy (May be Doubles) (East)
  • Wyandotte County (West)

Weekend Minis are usually Random-Draw Doubles to speed things along, especially on Saturday so folks may attend both events. Down Under Doubles is $10 per person, with the option for any "cali" player to "pay double to play double". KCFDC Ace Fund may not be in play.
SAT - Winter Hours Only
  • Prairie Center^ (9:00 AM, CST only)
  • Down Under^ (Noon, CST only)

SUN - All year long
  • Pleasant Hill--Lake Shore^ (Noon:30, Year-Round)

General Banter / Course Equipment Add-on
« on: June 04, 2010, 02:50:05 PM »
Having fallen in love with the tee signs (and more importantly the pin placement indicators) at Young Park, I remembered that KC's own long-lost John Heaton is a founding partner of Whirld Sports where they offer a few disc golf amenities like hats and shirts, but their "NexTee Indicators" look awesome! Click on for more info.

The NexTee Indicators would be really useful for any new course, but more importantly - for the new player to whom EVERY course is new!

Due to construction, I believe the best route is from the south. I'm gonna try it about 11:45. Cee ya!

The city is holding a new players intro from 4:00-5:00 PM on Thursday, September 3rd at Cler-Mont Elementary. Two dozen parents/kids have signed up so far. Cler-Mont is located in the Susquehanna area, east of MO-291 off US-24.

Let's get a small crew out there with stacks of plastic to welcome them!

I doubt I can make it as I work until 5 myself. Is anyone available during that timeframe?

General Banter / 30th Anniversary
« on: July 15, 2009, 04:12:21 PM »
July 14th and 15th mark 30 YEARS since my first tournament... woohoo!!

I was a skinny (honest) little (some things never change) 16-year old at the time (1979). A local radio station had advertised the North American Series Frisbee Tournament event, so I showed up and played. There was no qualifying, and I figured I stood a chance as I had been playing catch and fetch with my family since I was eight or nine.

Each entrant received set of Wham-O Frisbees -- 119g, 141g, and 165g -- with a hotstamp of Jo Cahow doing a neat freestyle move. I remember later that summer some kid hanging at the swimming pool saw me doing a nail-delay and decided to show off. I flung the disc his direction and he promptly pulled out a pocket knife to spin the disc on  :'(  oops...

I guess many of the big names of the day, as well as Crazy John and Hal "Baby" Kurz were there, but I didn't get to meet them.

Disc Golf was played using regular Wham-O discs (nothing else existed) and ground baskets -- kinda tough. Oh, and my best distance was about 100 feet :(  The top distance competitors kept their discs in their cooler to keep them rigid for best flight. I attempted MTA (Maximum Time Aloft) but don't even remember if I caught any shots. My dad and step-mom came to watch the freestyle and we couldn't believe it  :o  My step-mom asked "How do the judges know if it's spinning? Maybe they're just balancing the Frisbee." I quickly learned a nail-delay and showed her how it's even harder to just balance the disc.

The original Swope Park Folf Course opened soon after, and the rest as they say, is history  ;D
