WYCO / Kansas City Wide Open - Thanks
« on: June 13, 2005, 05:13:34 PM »
A huge thanks to all the pros that came to town and played at WyCo during the KC Wide Open. I hope you all had a great time. We have been putting a lot of effort into WyCo over the last year in anticipation of the pros being out there and are really proud of how it has turned out. More improvements are in store for the WyCo course so look for more tourneys there in the fuure.

It was awesome to see the most famous faces in disc golf play on the course I call home and shread it. Ken Climo making the jump from the forth card to the lead card with a 7 stroke improvement on his second round was truly impressive. And seeing Chris Sprague shoot an incredible 50 and lock himself in the lead spot for the rest of the tourney was outstanding. I can't imagine shooting a 50 on the 8400'+ course with rope narrowed fairways. Great shooting Chris and congratulations on winning the 23rd annual Kansas City Wide Open.

Whether you're a local player or just passing through town don't forget to get a round or two in at WyCo. We run league there every Friday evening with a 6:00pm tee off. Simply show up to play. It's an informal league run by the KCFDC and you're welcome to come and play.

I am keeping hole by hole stats all season starting with the KCWO layout. The layout is going to be changing this week though. It's been where it is for six weeks and it's time for a change. Look for #1 to go to long right at the request of Cecil Cameron and #14 will be going across the pond. I plan to move almost every pin that can move so look for a very different course by this Friday.

Finally, a very special thanks to Pat, Mike, Paul and all the guys on the mowers and trimmers of The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City Kansas Parks Department for all of their help in getting the course looking so nice. It played much better with all that rain thanks to their hard work and support. And no tournament would be possible without the people on the spot doing the important stuff. Major thanks to Tammie Morrison for handling the board and helping me keep my cool when things got weird, Sean Elliot did a great job of keeping things moving on #4 and to Dalton Morrison for spotting on #13 with my good friend Ed Gonzales. Thanks Ed! Also, having Jack out there as the PDGA Marshall with his handy little computer-like device made monitoring the weather a snap. Last but certainly not least, thanks to Master BBQ Chef Paul Eklund for the great eats!!

See you all at WyCo!!

I'm sure most folks thought league would be rained out this evening but not so. Three hardy souls braved the threat of severe storms and got 18 holes in in very little rain. It was raining when we started but stopped after two to three hoels and the evening turned out beautiful. Third time that's happened this season. Starts out nasty ends up nice. Work day on Saturday 6/4.

Open
Cecil Cameron 55
Rick Molenkamp 65

WYCO / WyCo Workday 6/4 - 9:30am
« on: June 01, 2005, 11:02:16 AM »
There will be a workday at WyCo this Saturday morning. I will be in the parking lot by #1 by 9:30 to get things going. Weed eating, trimming of a few trees and more poison ivy spraying are a few of the things planned. Also, we hope to have tee information to afix to the current tee signs. If you have any other projects you would like to do at WyCo just let me know.

Once again the threat of rain kept the throngs away. However, once again the evening turned out beautiful and those that stayed away made a big mistake. The clouds and threat of rain gave way to blue skies and a gentle breeze. A great evening at WyCo for the six folks that showed up. Three open and three masters:

General Banter / Montgomery Farm Ace - Jeff Campbell
« on: May 16, 2005, 11:09:26 AM »
We set up a nine-hole course down on the farm this past weekend. It's a course layout I have used several times in the past. We played the course three times and on the third time through Jeff Campbell - aka Soup, hit hole #3. It was about 260-280 up hill and blind, behind a barn. the basket was one of the "octopus" baskets donated to the farm by the Army Major, Matt Ambrose, that had the course on Fort Leavenworth with them.

Anyway, that's the first ace hit at the farm. The throw was a big hyzer and looked great all the way. The disc dropped behind the barn and Jeff said "I think I heard bungee". The "chains" on these baskets are rubber rope. I don't think he hit the rope. I think the disc just dropped into the tire and stopped. The scene was awesone. The basket hangs from a big sycamore tree and has a beat up 1960 Ford 1-ton truck as an obstacle to the left of the basket. Several of us had to throw from the bed of the truck after our discs went under.

There is some great land at the farm for disc golf. The next time we have a disc golf weekend down there I hope more people can make it.

Way to go Soup!!  I hope you enjoyed the hamburger in lieu of the $5 spot.

No league this week. Mark Morales, Mike Penny and I showed up but decided to go play Ted's Dread in preparation for the Redbud instead. It was awfully windy, must have scared the regulars away.....

General Banter / Mike Needs Our Help - Course Being Pulled in Florida
« on: April 20, 2005, 02:48:01 PM »
For those that may not know Mike Wesley he is one of the primary designers and a driving force behind the WyCo disc golf course. He is also a long time member of the Kansas City Flying Disc Club. If you've ever seen his underhanded left-hand throw you'll remember him.

Here's the problem....  Mike just found out that they are closing the Rockledge course and pulling the baskets on May 1st. Someone is buying the land and building a business there.

Mike moved to Rockledge Florida two years ago and has been happily working, living and playing disc golf there ever since. This is a private disc golf course that is one of the oldest permanent courses in the country. It was established in 1978. I was there last week and played it and it is a fun, tight, technical course. He has played it almost daily since moving there.

The City of Rockledge has a park nearby that they suggested they may move the baskets to and put the course in as a public course but they are balking on it now. Mike needs advice on how to convince the city that a disc golf course is a good thing for the park. It is in a nice area so keeping out the riff-raff isn't valid, they don't have a problem with "cruising" so that isn't valid. I have suggested that it will increase foot traffic in a seldom used area of the park. Can anyone think of other arguments Mike can present to the city to convince them to move the course from the private land into the public park? Are there resources anyone knows of that he can use to help build his argument?

You are free to share you thoughts here or call him directly. His number is 321-302-0431. Thanks.
