Tournaments / Re: Sunday tournaments
« on: September 05, 2013, 11:16:18 AM »
I'll be in Hamilton, IL this Sunday.  Not sure if you're looking to drive 4 hours though.  One of the two courses at this event is one of my favorite courses to play, Wildcat Springs.

I finally have the new thread up for this year's 4SO:

Thanks for the nudge Jordan!

The Joplin Disc Golf Club, with generous support from the Joplin CVB, Mother’s Brewery, Blackthorn Pizza & Pub, & PILR Technology Services, proudly presents the 8th Annual Four States Open, This year's tournament is the area’s first ever PDGA A-Tier event and will be held from September 27th through September 29th, 2013 in Joplin and Neosho, MO. There will be a minimum of $3,500 added cash to the Pro divisions, split out as $2k to MPO, $1k to FPO, and $500 to all other Pro divisions. We have again partnered with both Mother's Brewery out of Springfield and Blackthorn Pizza and Pub in Joplin to make this year's event the best 4SO to date.

Pre-registration is required and can be completed here: The field is limited to 270 players, 90 in Pool A (All Professional Division), 90 in Pool B (All Advanced Divisions), & 90 in Pool C (All Intermediate, Rec, & Jr Divisions).  Pre-reg list is found here:  We've had several top FPO's verbally commit to being here this year and last year we had a total of 41 pro's at the 4SO.

Entry Fees:
MPO - $100
FPO - $50
All other Pro - $50
All Adv - $40
All Intermediate - $30
All Rec & JR - $25 (Trophy Only w/bonus players pack item)

This year’s schedule has Pool A (All Professional Divisions) playing on Friday and Saturday only, four rounds total, no Final 9. This provides the Pro’s an extra travel day to the USDGC if that is the next stop on their tour. Pools B & C will play on Saturday and Sunday and will also play four rounds total. This year we are adding Morse Park North in Neosho, MO to the tournament to provide an additional challenge and accommodate more players. Each pool will play one round in Neosho. McClelland Park in Joplin will still be home to the 4SO two-course layout.

The Friday Doubles Tournament and Field Events Competitions (Longest Drive, EDGE SkillShot, & Putting Contest) will be open to anyone not playing on Friday in Pool A and take place on September 27th with $500 added to the payouts. The flex start time is from 12-6 PM with unlimited rounds. Entry fees for Friday Doubles is $30 per team for Adv and $20 per team for Intermediate or Rec. Cost for the Field Events is still TBD.

The FREE Player’s Party will be held Saturday night at Blackthorn Pizza & Pub in downtown Joplin with free Blackthorn Pizza for all players. The plans include having the entire city block out front blocked off for our party to include the Putting Contest Finals and a beer garden along with other activities. The party should run sometime around 6-9 PM.

The players pack for all Am players includes a dri-fit shirt, custom stamped Prodigy disc, custom stamped Discraft/Innova disc, and a $30 Tour Towel.  This is a $78 value!  All Rec and Jr divisions are trophy only and will have bonus players pack items.

Spread the word, pre-register, and get ready for the 2013 Four States Open.

General Banter / Re: Disc Golf shoes

I agree with Mike about Keen being a great company that stands behind their shoes.

However, by a far and wide margin, the best disc golf shoes I have ever owned are the Adidas Terrex line, found here:  I picked up a basic Terrex shoe from the Adidas outlet in Osage Beach (for $30) and that shoe has lasted me well over a year+ and the shoe looks nearly the same as it did when I bought it.  Most shoes I have ever worn for DG have lasted 3-6 months max.  The sole is very grippy and lasts forever.  Plus there's good rubber on the toe of the shoe so the sole doesn't tear away from the midsole.

Dick, will you bring two max weight glow roc3's to Smithville this Saturday so I can consider purchasing them?

Does the players meeting start around 9:00?

Anything special a non-local would need to know about how to get to the course or the course in general?  We're first-timers to Smithville and we'll be leaving Joplin around 4:30 AM so any tips for the road-weary would be appreciated.

It's a holiday for several of us in the Joplin club as well so that's why we've started running an event on Good Friday the last couple of years.

Looking for a Friday C-Tier tune-up before the DUI, Emporia, or Tulsa events?  Head down to Neosho and Joplin for a round at each course on March 29th.  Yeah, our flyer is made in Microsoft Word but it's still 45 holes of disc golf and it'll be good practice for the A-Tier Four States at the end of September.  We plan to use the Neosho course this year for the 4SO along with the 36 hole layout at McClelland.

Thanks for the encouraging words KC guys.

When thinking about moving up to an A-Tier tournament, we have always struggled to answer the questions "Why?" and "What are the benefits?"  Can you guys share your thoughts on this?  In my very limited conversations with only a few people from small clubs who have ran A-Tiers, most say it's not worth the hassle, the extra costs, the change in player expectations, etc.

The 2012 Four States Open presented by Mother's Brewery is up to 82 paid pre-registered players so far over 12 divisions.  Pre-register at

We'll have the temp 9 set up to play next Tuesday night for our singles mini which starts at 5:30.  We'll also have the temp 9 set up for practice on Friday during the Friday Doubles event with $500 added cash.  Flex start time from Noon-6:00 PM.

Again, don't forget about the $10 hotel voucher if you stay in a Joplin hotel.  Just bring us your receipt.

Visit for all the details!

Tracy, where at on the west side of town?  I imagine we won't be getting into town until 9:00 or later and it sounds like heading your direction might add 30+ min to our drive so unfortunately WyCo league is out for us.

Anyone have an empty bed or couch to house two Joplinites this Friday night?  I've got a hiking air mattress so I could even survive on the floor.

Is DGCR still pretty accurate for Cliff Drive in terms of holes and layout?

I've played Cliff once and it was probably 3+ years ago so I just want to know if it's even remotely the same course from back then.
